Blitz Package - Week 8

I would like to know any comments or suggestions you have about my column. I want to take advantage of the fast response time the internet has (over, say, magazines), so that I can bring you a quality, useful column. Based on the time I have available this year, I may not immediately act upon it, but I would like to hear it. My email is available below. Thanks!

If you have a tie between your #2 and #3 LB or #2 LB and #2 DB, I highly recommend that you go and read our Rushing and Passing matchups. When in doubt, start your LBs/SSs/DBs that are playing against RBs we say that have good or great matchups, and DBs that are playing against WRs that have good or great matchups. They will be on the field a long time, increasing your odds for high tackle/PD/INT numbers. Questions? Email [email protected]

Rookie Watch

NT/DL Ty Warren NE
Warren had a huge week last Sunday, notching 4-3-1. I will keep an eye on him, and assume from me that no news = bad news for Warren.

Fantasy Tip - DBs

I have decided to stop calling this "Rookie Tips" because I don't want it to get confused with my Rookie Watch. Anyway, for leagues where you get 1 pt/assist and can start 4 or more IDPs, DBs may be a way for you to bolster your defensive squad. In most of the leagues I play in, DBs get overlooked in favor of the more flashy LBs, yet often there are DBs available on the waivers that perform like LBs. Guys like Rodney Harrison, Antoine Winfield and Greg Wesley get LB-like numbers, and are available simply because less experienced owners concentrate on the LBs.

Some of you have asked what scoring system I use for my rankings. Here it is: Every Tackle/Assist/FF/PD = 1; sacks = 2; FR/safety/INT = +2; any TD = +6.

TOP watch Cards -4, Seattle -3; Ravens -3, Jags -3

Blitz Packages

Bye Teams: Falcons, Packers, Raiders, Redskins

Defensive Lineman

Vonnie Holiday/Eric Hicks/Chiefs DL
It's time for Holliday to make a one week splash. This week the Chiefs draw the Bills and their turnstile OL. They have an excellent chance to have a multiple sack day.

Leonard Little/Grant Wistrom/Ram DL
As with the Chiefs, the Rams have Tommy Maddox in their sights. They have done precious little this year, but have a cheese matchup this week.

Shaun Ellis/John Abraham/Jets DL
On paper the Jets have a great chance to get sacks against the porous Eagle OL. However, this could be a week when they may not. The Jets have been getting pressure in spurts, and if McNabb decides to run more than he has lately that may not happen. However, the chances favor a big day for the Jet DL, so play them expecting their normal results and be happy with whatever gifts they give you above that.

DT Cletidius Hunt GB
Hunt has posted some solid tackle numbers the past few weeks. He has 10-3-1 1FF. As long as the Packers continue to struggle, Hunt is a nice spot play and may be under the radar in your league.

Linebackers

MLB Ron McKinnon ARI
The TOP again favors the Cards for high tackles this week. I am going to play him in one league and I expect #2 numbers out of him - 7-10 tackles.

SLB Gerald Hayes ARI
The team is making noise about starting their 3rd round pick from this year. This will become a reality in the next few weeks as the season becomes another experiment to see what they have in their young players since the playoffs are out of reach.

OLB Rocky Boiman TEN
It was a great run, but Boiman is back on the bench behind Sirmon.

MLB Nate Webster TB
Webster is a guy I have liked since he was a rookie, and drafted him (but didn't keep him) in a couple of different dynasty leagues. He is starting finally (the reason I cut him was lack of PT), and with opposing teams figuring out they can run straight at the Bucs, he and Derrick Brooks will continue to get more tackles. Webster makes a nice #3-2 LB, but only in leagues that award for assists.

MLB Andra Davis CLE
He started out the year on a tear, but has reduced himself to a situational starter. He is ranked at #45 over the last three weeks. In the league where I own him, I am going to try and move him based on his high yearly rank.

Defensive Backs

FS Brian Russell/CB Brian Williams/Viking DBs
The Vikings draw QB Collins who is throwing a lot of picks this week. The Viking DL has been doing a great job bringing pressure, and should have another great week against the young Giant OL. That should turn into 2-3 picks this week.

CB Ahmed Plummer/CB Mike Rumph/49er DBs
The 49ers have a slight advantage this week in the INT department against Jeff Blake. Blake should throw 1-2 picks.

FS Mike Brown/CB R.W. McQuarters/Bears DBs
You should start your DBs each week that face the Lions (or as my buddy Mark Voisin likes to call them, the LiDowns). This week the secondary that draws Harrington happens to be the Bears.

CB Fred Thomas NO
This has turned into "the year of the stud CB", since Nick Harper, among other CBs, has been producing well. Thomas is a guy who has been getting some sweet, LB-like numbers. He has 18-2-1 1 INT 6 PDs the last three weeks.

SS Sammy Knight MIA
Knight is producing like his teammate Zach Thomas. Knight has 11-10-0 1 PD 1 FF the past three weeks.

FS Matt Bowen WAS
They are on bye this week, but Bowen has been a solid #2 DB who is in sniffing distance of #1 territory. He has 18-2-0 1 PD the past three weeks. In leagues that rank players on performance (Like Yahoo) Bowen may not only be available, but in stealth mode, due to his likely low ranking, which will only drift lower this week thanks to the bye.

Good Luck!
