WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Philadelphia Eagles

Quarterback Donovan McNabb followed up his best performance of the season last week with a spectacular fourth quarter effort this week that resulted in another comeback victory. McNabb had over 200 yards of total offense and scored both rushing and passing.

With running back Brian Westbrook still hobbled with an ankle injury, Duce Staley had nearly 100 yards of total offense and may be back in favor with Head Coach Andy Reid.

Wide receiver Todd Pinkston caught the go-ahead touchdown pass with :27 seconds left in the game. James Thrash provided yardage on kick returns and some excitement with a 51 yard reception in the fourth quarter that setup the Eagles first touchdown.

Green Bay Packers

With only 109 yards passing Brett Favre had a miserable games that included one lost fumble and an interception. Wet weather and a slippery soft cast on his broken thumb proved to be too much to overcome.

In a losing effort, running back Ahman Green made a play for the horse trailer. Green set two Packers team records with 192 yards rushing, 32 yards receiving, and 2 touchdowns. However, he also now leads the league in fumbles with 7 on the season.

In the third quarter, the Packers chewed up the clock on a drive that resulted in Kicker Ryan Longwell's missed 45 yard field goal, his first miss of the season.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Philadelphia Eagles

QB: Despite the weather conditions favoring the ground game, QB Donovan McNabb (15-31-198, 1 TD passing, 5-26, 1 TD rushing) finished with good stats and another fourth quarter come from behind win. Only connecting on 3 passes in the first half, McNabb was flustered early as his receivers were well covered. The Eagles last four possessions of the first half were all three-and-outs. However, the fourth quarter was all McNabb and the Eagles netted 143 yards in the final period, just under half their total yardage for the game. McNabb's rushing touchdown from one yard out was delivered with pure power. As McNabb was hit by two Green Bay defenders he appeared to bend backwards just slightly from the blow, the ball barely broke the plane of the goal line with his twisting move as he went down.

RB: ABC's John Madden mentioned that he believed Eagles RB Duce Staley (10-53 rushing, 2-45 receiving, 3 targets) would soon begin to reclaim his top spot in the running-back-by-committee pecking order and become a more integral piece of a playoff run. Staley was utilized mostly in the second half of the game and Staley fantasy owners can take it for what it's worth, but that is when the Eagles finally looked like a cohesive offensive unit. Staley finished with nearly 100 yards combined and looked like the ball in a pinball machine on his longest run from scrimmage of 34 yards.

Last weeks go-to-guy, RB Correll Buckhalter (9-23 rushing) had 8 carries in the first half and only a single touch in the second, which cost him a yard as he was thrown down for a loss.

RB Brian Westbrook (5-1 rushing) played sparingly on a still feeble ankle.

FB Jon Ritchie (0-0 rushing, 2-11 receiving, 2 targets) grabbed a pair of swing passes when downfield coverage forced McNabb to go to his outlet.

Rookie RB Reno Mahe (0-0 rushing, 1-5 receiving, 1 target) got in a catch as the outlet receiver also.

WR: James Thrash (2-55 receiving, 9 targets) was McNabb's primary target in the game but was well covered, had one drop, and gained most of his yardage on a single play in the fourth quarter that went for 51 yards to the Green Bay 3 yard line. Three plays later McNabb scored his rushing touchdown. In the second quarter the Eagles attempted a double-reverse that was designed for Thrash, however, WR Todd Pinkston bobbled the handoff from McNabb and wisely did not attempt to make the handoff to Thrash. Thrash also contributed 96 yards on kick returns, including one for 45 yards in the fourth.

WR Todd Pinkston (3-26, 1 TD receiving, 1-[-11] rushing, 5 targets) caught 3 passes, all in the second half, and had the game winning touchdown reception with :27 seconds remaining on the clock.

WR Freddie Mitchell (3-23 receiving, 3 targets) caught all three passes thrown his way.

TE: Tight ends were McNabb's second favorite target in the game but Chad Lewis (2-33 receiving, 6 targets) was only able to catch two of six passes.

TE L.J. Smith (0-0 receiving, 3 targets) didn't fare any better.

K: David Akers (1-2 FG, 2-2 XP) hit a short field goal from 21 yards out that was the difference in the game. He also missed wide right from 47 yards in the second quarter.

Pass Defense: Green Bay did not utilize their passing game extensively and when they did, the Eagles pass defense was sound. The Eagles only allowed 109 yards in the air, sacking QB Brett Favre once and intercepting him once. A Packer last season, Nate Wayne made a leaping, one arm grab to intercept his former teammate.

Rush Defense: The Eagles rush defense was well short of spectacular allowing Green Bay 241 yards on the ground and a new single game, team rushing record to RB Ahman Green.

Green Bay Packers

QB: Playing for the second game with a broken thumb on his throwing hand, Brett Favre (14-22-109, 1 TD passing, 1 INT, 2-8 rushing, 3 fumbles - 1 lost) had a dismal game, fumbling the football three times. His third and final fumble was crushing. Favre lost the ball on an attempted pass to an open receiver who was running to the sideline around the Eagles 35 yard line… with :01 second remaining in the game. The obvious cause of Favre's three fumbles was the soft cast treatment applied to the thumb of his throwing hand. Apparently in the wet weather it is as slippery as a banana peel. The ball popped out of Favre's hand at exactly the same point in each instance, right as he cocked the ball back to make the throw.

RB: The Packers led for most of the game primarily due to the efforts of RB Ahman Green (29-192, 1 TD rushing, 3-32, 1 TD receiving, 4 targets, 2 fumbles - 1 lost). Overcoming his own troubles fumbling (also possibly due to wet, slick equipment), Green set the Packers single game rushing record with his performance and scored both of the Packers touchdowns. The first touchdown of the game was on a perfectly executed screen pass to Green from 24 yards out with less than a minute left to play in the first half. The defensive end bit perfectly while the weak side linebacker was caught on a blitz, add a few good moves by Green and another downfield block to make it look like an easy score. Green is the first RB in Packers history to score a receiving touchdown in each of four consecutive games. Green's rushing touchdown, to regain the lead in the fourth quarter, was on a 4th and 1 play from 45 yards out, once he broke through the line there was no one around to stop him.

RB Najeh Davenport (4-24 rushing, 0-0 receiving, 1 target, 1 fumble) was called upon as Green's backup only after 2 or 3 successive carries by Green, and never in the red zone. Davenport fumbled once as he held the football away from his body while coming through the defensive line, leaving it hanging out to be knocked away.

Getting some work in relief of the workhorse Green, RB Tony Fisher (2-17 rushing) was a bit player.

FB William Henderson (0-0 rushing, 1-0 receiving, 1 target) caught one outlet pass late in the game.

WR: No Packers receiver had thrilling stats but WR Donald Driver (2-18 receiving, 6 targets) was targeted more than the others. Driver provided a little drama as his full speed attempt to run under one Favre pass ended up rolling off his fingertips, and he was the target on Favre's only deep throw of the game as well.

WR Robert Ferguson (2-16 receiving, 2 targets) had one catch in the first quarter and a great diving grab in the fourth quarter on 3rd down that was just shy of the marker. The next play was Green's 45 yard touchdown run.

WR Javon Walker (2-9 receiving, 4 targets) had 1 catch for 7 yards erased by a holding penalty in the first quarter.

WR Antonio Freeman (1-15 receiving, 3 targets) was open on the Favre pass that was thrown for an interception and had room to run if the ball had been a little higher.

TE: Bubba Franks (1-4 receiving, 1 target) received little attention in the Packers' run dominated game plan.

TE Wesley Walls (2-15 receiving, 2 targets) had one important 14 yard catch in the fourth quarter as the Packers attempted to mount comeback.

K: The weather surely had something to do with it as Ryan Longwell (0-1 FG, 2-2 XP) missed his first kick of the season from 45 yards out. His kick was perfectly straight, down the center of the uprights, but just short. Longwell was 5 for 5 from 40-49 yards coming into tonight's game.

Pass Defense: The Packers pass defense was solid in the first half providing excellent coverage downfield, getting one sack and only allowing 28 yards. However, they let QB Donovan McNabb have his way with them in the second half.

Rush Defense: Overall, the Packers held all Philadelphia rushers to 92 yards. New addition Grady Jackson, acquired this past week from New Orleans, contributed a half sack. In goal line situations, even opposing teams with big fullbacks don't run up the middle as the Packers stack nearly 700 pounds at the defensive tackle positions.
