SATURDAY UPDATES

Quarterbacks

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Michael Vick (Atl) is expected to take some snaps this weekend, and (barring a setback) he will start next weekend against Carolina.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Matt Hasselbeck (Sea) was hit by the flu on Wednesday but has improved and will start this weekend.  Also, he was able to work his injured shoulder in the weight room on Friday.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Steve McNair (Ten) threw a few passes Saturday and tested his strained calf by moving around a little. He was optimistic but doesn't want to set himself up for a letdown. "I'm just going to keep an open mind right now to where I can improve even more in the next two days," said McNair, who watched most of practice with his calf on ice. "I'm just staying positive that I am going to play." It's honestly very tough to say whether he'll play or not. You don't pay us money to straddle the fence so if you made me put a number on it, I'd say the odds of him starting Monday are 70%. Look at your roster and make your best call.

Running Backs

*** SATURDAY UPDATE (from Bob Harris) *** RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) has been ruled out for tomorrow's game against the Cardinals after contracting a case of viral pneumonia. Looks like Brock Forsey will get the start and likely carry the load. Remember that Brock Forsey started his first career game and rushed for 56 yards on 19 carries in an Oct. 26 win over Detroit -- the last time Thomas missed a game. He also scored his first NFL touchdown on an 8-yard run that day. Forsey could be a nice pickup if you're in need of a RB this week.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Corey Dillon (Cin) will start this weekend over Rudi Johnson.  Dillon is expected to receive about two-thirds of the carries.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB William Green (Cle) is unlikely to be released this off-season.  Cleveland officials seem inclined to hold on the Green at least through the 2004 season.

Wide Receivers

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Darnerien McCants (Was) hasn’t practiced all week and will likely sit this weekend.  Patrick Johnson will be the team’s #3 WR.

Tight Ends

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** TE Robert Johnson (Chi) has been lost for the season after being placed on the injured reserve list with a broken foot.  TE Gabe Reid was signed off the Titans practice squad to take Johnson’s roster spot.

Offensive Linemen

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** C Jeff Hartings (Pit) says he expects to start this weekend.

Defensive Backs

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** Ss Nnamdi Asomugha & Anthony Dorsett (Oak) are expected to start this weekend.

ALL OF THE NEWS

Quarterbacks

QB Jeff Blake (Ari) is expected to start as normal this weekend despite his injured knee.

QB Doug Johnson (Atl) will start again for the team as Michael Vick is still hobbled and Kurt Kittner is still horrible.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Michael Vick (Atl) practiced on Wednesday and said he “felt really good.”  (Barring a setback) he will be the team’s #2 QB this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Michael Vick (Atl) practiced on Thursday and Friday and will be the team’s #2 QB this weekend.  He could finally see action this season.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Michael Vick (Atl) is expected to take some snaps this weekend, and (barring a setback) he will start next weekend against Carolina.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Kyle Boller (Bal) is still out with his injured quadriceps.

QB Anthony Wright (Bal) impressed the Ravens so much last Sunday that he could remain as the team's starting QB even when Kyle Boller returns from injury.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Anthony Wright (Bal) was added to the injury report (shoulder) but he practiced partially on Friday and will start this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Drew Bledsoe (Buf) experienced headaches and nausea due to a mild concussion.  He seems to be improving and practiced on Friday (although he admitted to being a bit “fuzzy”.  He should start this weekend.

QB Chris Chandler (Chi) underwent an MRI on his injured shoulder which revealed a sprain.  He is currently listed as day-to-day and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.  HC Dick Jauron says that Chandler would continue as the team's starting QB if healthy.   If Chandler is not healthy, Kordell Stewart would step in as the starter.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Chris Chandler (Chi) did not practice on Wednesday and will likely sit out the Thursday session as well.  However, the team still hopes he’ll be able to start this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Chris Chandler (Chi) is not ready to play and will be the team’s #3 QB this weekend.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) took all of the 1st team snaps in Wednesday’s practice and will start if Chandler can not go.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) will start for the team this weekend.  Rex Grossman will be the backup.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Jake Plummer (Den) practiced on Friday and should start this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Tony Banks (Hou) will start for the team this weekend.

QB David Carr (Hou) is recovering and could return this weekend after missing last Sunday's game with his sprained throwing shoulder.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB David Carr (Hou) said that on Tuesday he “couldn’t actually play catch with (his) son.”  Even though his shoulder is improving, Carr will sit again.  That means Tony Banks will get his second straight start.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB David Carr (Hou) will not start this weekend.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Peyton Manning (Ind) felt a “twinge” in his throwing elbow during Wednesday’s practice and will undergo an MRI.  HC Tony Dungy does not believe the injury is serious and expects Manning to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Peyton Manning (Ind) threw without pain on Friday and (barring a setback) will start this weekend.  The MRI on his elbow was negative. It was mainly a precautionary type move and he should be good to go for the game this week. The team is saying it was a minor issue.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Mark Brunell (Jac) says he would like to be reunited with former HC Tom Coughlin if Coughlin lands another head coaching position for the 2004 season.

QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) could see the bench soon.  HC Jack Del Rio says he is considering sitting his struggling rookie in favor of David Garrard.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Bryon Leftwich (Jac) will continue as the team’s starting QB.

QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) has regained his role as the team's starting QB and will start on Thanksgiving Day against the Cowboys.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced on Friday and will start this weekend.

QB Rohan Davey (NE) has moved past Damon Huard and is now the team's backup QB.

QB Aaron Brooks (NO) is expected to start as normal this weekend despite re-aggravating his injured knee.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Aaron Brooks (NO) has a sprained MCL in his left knee, but he practiced on Wednesday and is expected to start this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Aaron Brooks (NO) did not practice on Thursday, but he did go on Friday and should start this weekend.

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) hopes to return to the starting lineup this weekend. According to HC Dennis Erickson, he will do so if he can "move around normally".  It looks like the Wednesday practice is the key.  If Garcia looks "normal" on Wednesday, he'll likely get the start.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) looked “normal” on Wednesday and has been named the team’s starting QB for this weekend’s game.

QB Matt Hasselbeck (Sea) is expected to start as normal this weekend despite his injured shoulder.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Matt Hasselbeck (Sea) was hit by the flu on Wednesday but has improved and will start this weekend.  Also, he was able to work his injured shoulder in the weight room on Friday.

QB Marc Bulger (StL) is still the team's starting QB despite struggling the past few weeks. Head coach Mike Martz was comically adamant in his press conference that Bulger is the guy.

QB Steve McNair (Ten) has not been ruled out of action this weekend, but he should miss practice all week.  He will rest and treat his calf all week and looks like a game-time decision.  It doesn't look good, but this is Steve McNair that we're talking about.  If McNair can't play, Billy Volek (who looked good in relief last Sunday) will get the start.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Steve McNair (Ten) did not practice on Wednesday but has not been ruled out of Monday night’s game.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Steve McNair (Ten) did not practice on Thursday or Friday and is a game-time decision. The worry, of course, is that McNair could further injure his calf. He will not play unless he can move about in the pocket to protect himself and do so without pain. He's a tough one to predict as he has a track record of looking bad all week missing practice and then being ready to play on Sunday. Monday night makes it even harder to guess. If we had to put a number on it, we'd say it's 50-50 that he plays Monday night.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Gibran Hamdan (Was) has been signed from the practice squad.  He will serve as Tim Hasselbeck’s backup this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Tim Hasselbeck (Was) will start for the team this weekend.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) is still not healthy and could miss another week.  Tim Hasselbeck played well last week so the team will not rush Ramsey back.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) will continue as the team’s starting QB if healthy.  He doesn’t look healthy yet (his right foot is in a cast) and should sit this weekend.  Tim Hasselbeck should get the start.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) is not healthy enough to play this weekend.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** RB Emmitt Smith (Ari) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend.

RB Warrick Dunn (Atl) has been lost for the season after being placed on the injured reserve list with ligament tear in his left foot. Obviously, this gives T.J. Duckett a huge boost in value.  FB Justin Griffith should also get some looks in the running game.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** RB George Layne (Atl) has been signed by the team.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Chester Taylor (Bal) practiced on Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) did not suffer a setback while playing last Sunday and looks like he will continue to start as normal.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** RB Clinton Portis (Den) practiced on Wednesday and should start this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Clinton Portis (Den) practiced on Thursday and Friday and should start this weekend.

RB Artose Pinner (Det) has been added to the 53-man roster.  He might play on Thanksgiving Day, but he likely will wait until December 7th to make his pro debut.  Given the current state of the Lions running game, Pinner will likely at least be given a shot to produce when completely healthy.  However, he is still not completely healthy.  His leg still tires after long practices.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** RB Artose Pinner (Det) has been ruled out of the Thanksgiving Day game.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Artose Pinner (Det) now looks like he will debut in week 15.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** RB Doug Chapman (Min) was released by the team in order to make a claim on TE Richard Angulo (just released by the Rams).  By adding Angulo, the Vikings would have access to the St. Louis audible terminology.

RB Onterrio Smith (Min) is nothing more than a kick returner now that Michael Bennett has returned from injury.

RB Moe Williams (Min) is no longer the team's primary RB, but he will still receive some touches.

RB Ki-Jana Carter (NO) could miss some time with his injured toe.  With Carter out, James Fenderson is the team's backup RB.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** RB Ki-Jana Carter (NO) will undergo surgery on his toe and will be lost for the remainder of the season. Lamar Smith was signed by the team and (when he learns the offense) should replace Carter as the team’s primary backup RB.  Until Smith is up to speed, James Fenderson will be the #2 back.

*** WEDNESDAY UPDATE *** RB James Fenderson (NO) practiced on Wednesday and should be able to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB James Fenderson (NO) practiced on Thursday and Friday and should play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB LaMont Jordan (NYJ) has practiced all week and will wear a smaller cast this weekend which will allow him to handle a few carries.
