Players in the News (Thursday's Edition)

Quarterbacks

QB Michael Vick (Atl) is improving a great deal, but he is still out with his broken leg.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Michael Vick “is progressing well” according to head coach Dan Reeves.  Vick has done some throwing and is wearing shoes again.  Vick isn’t ready for a full practice but says he’ll be ready in two weeks.   Reeves isn’t so sure about that.

Note that all Baltimore QBs have a bye this week.

QB Tim Couch (Cle) will in fact get another start this weekend as Kelly Holcomb is still not healthy enough to start.

QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) may be healthy enough to be able to serve as the team's #2 QB this weekend.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) practiced on Wednesday with his sore knee and will play this weekend.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) may or may not have a sore shoulder.  TE Mikhael Ricks spoke of the injury this week, but Harrington denies having anything more than normal bumps and bruises in his throwing shoulder.

Note that all Houston QBs have a bye this week.

QB Mark Brunell (Jac) did not take any snaps with the offense on Wednesday, but he did throw on the sidelines.  He has been cleared for 'careful' practicing.  Brunell says he expects to play this weekend.

QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) took the first-team snaps in Wednesday's practice.  No starter has been named for this weekend but we're leaning towards Leftwich right now. It's still early though.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) has been named as the team’s starting QB for this weekend.

QB Brian Griese (Mia) was able to practice on Wednesday and is expected to serve as the team's #2 QB this weekend.

QB Daunte Culpepper (Min) was not able to practice on Wednesday and could very well miss this weekend's game.  This seems like a easy move for the team to make as the Falcons defense has been torched with regularity.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE ***QB Daunte Culpepper (Min) will sit another week.  Combined with the team’s week six bye, Culpepper will have plenty of time to rest his back.

QB Gus Frerotte (Min) will start again this week according to the Star Tribune as Daunte Culpepper missed Wednesday's practice.  Keep in mind though that no official word has been given.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Gus Frerotte (Min) will in fact start again for the Vikings this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Tom Brady (NE) practiced on Thursday and will start this weekend despite his ever-present elbow injury.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Aaron Brooks (NO) may be on the proverbial hot seat as the Saints offense has struggled to produce quality numbers.  There are whispers that the team could soon turn to Todd Bouman.  Brooks definitely struggled, but we’re trying to figure out how he gave up 55 points to the Colts last Sunday.

Note that all NY Jets QBs have a bye this week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) was able to participate in some of the light workouts in Thursday’s practice.

QB Vinny Testaverde (NYJ) could see the bench very soon if the team does not begin winning.  The team would like to see Brooks Bollinger in game conditions. He has incentives built into his contact that are based upon playing time.  Some have questioned why should the team spend extra money to an old QB when they are simply losing?

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) is still bothered by his sore groin, but he is expected to play this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) practiced fully on Wednesday and will play this weekend.

Note that all St. Louis QBs have a bye this week.

Running backs

Note that all Baltimore RBs have a bye this week.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) was able to practice on Wednesday.  The team really needs Henry back as Joe Burns was very ineffective last Sunday.

RB Sammy Morris (Buf) is still out while recovering from hernia surgery.

RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) is expected to play this weekend despite suffering a bruised shoulder last Monday night.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) is officially listed as questionable with his groin injury, but all signs point to him sitting this week in an effort to be 100% after the team's week six bye.  Look for Rudi Johnson to get the lion's share of the carries for the team this weekend.

RB Rudi Johnson (Cin) is expected to start this weekend for Corey Dillon.

RB Kenny Watson (Cin) was signed by the team and should be part of the active roster this weekend.

RB Clinton Portis (Den) is still unknown with regards to his playing status for this weekend.  He was able to take part in Wednesday's non-contact session.  Obviously, more will be known as we monitor his participation in Thursday's contact sessions.  However, with the opponent being the also-undefeated Chiefs, we believe every effort will be made to get Portis on the field.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Clinton Portis (Den) practiced again on Thursday.  Head coach Mike Shanahan said he fared well.  Portis says he “feels well” and that “the pain is gone and right now (he is) having no setbacks”.  We believe it would be a shock if Portis did not play this weekend.

FB Najeh Davenport (GB) may miss more time this weekend with his injured hamstring.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Najeh Davenport (GB) was able to practice on Wednesday and could see action this weekend.  Remember, as was reported a couple of weeks ago, Tony Fisher is the team’s #2 RB.  If Davenport can go, that will allow the Packers to sit Luchey with his thumb injury.

FB Nicolas Luchey (GB) may miss another week with his thumb injury.

Note that all Houston RBs have a bye this week.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) says he is in no hurry to come back to action. Said James, "We've got three backs who are good and I don't want to do what I did last year. That's one thing I said in the off-season, that I wasn't going to play if I'm not right. I guess I'm being tested early. You can't rush an injury." James said he has talked with coach Tony Dungy and president Bill Polian regarding playing when he isn't 100 percent, or reasonably close. "We don't want to do what we did last year," James said. "We're winning games. We've got a defense. We've got other backs out there."

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) was able to practice on Thursday and (barring a setback) will be able to play on Monday night.

RB Priest Holmes (KC) is still a little bothered by his hip flexor, but he will start this weekend against the Broncos.

RB Larry Johnson (KC) suffered a hamstring injury in Wednesday's practice and may miss this weekend's game.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Fred McCrary (NE) wasn’t able to practice on Thursday and isn’t expected to play this weekend.

RB Ron Dayne (NYG) started for the Dolphins in Wednesday's practice. Actually, he was simulating Ricky Williams for the Giants' defense.  We had no idea Williams was that slow.

Note that all NY Jets RBs have a bye this week.

RB LaMont Jordan (NYJ) will receive more touches when the team returns from its bye week.  Head coach Herman Edwards says Jordan will replace Curtis Martin more often.  It looks like the changing of the guard is at hand.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) has a sore calf but nothing more.  He is expected to play this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) was limited in Wednesday’s practice.  This seems to be a near-weekly occurrence as the team definitely does not want to overwork him.

Note that all St. Louis RBs have a bye this week.

RB Lamar Gordon (StL) merely has a sprained wrist.  He is expected to be able to start after the team's bye week.
