Players in the News (Thursday's Edition)

THURSDAY UPDATES

Quarterbacks

*** THURSDAY OPINION (GRAY) *** QB Michael Vick (Atl) is still only walking and is in too much pain to run or throw vigorously.  The team says they are still targeting Vick’s return in on November 2nd, but we believe it might not happen.  If the Falcons keep losing, there will be little reason to hurry him back so obviously Vick will not return until he is 100%.  It’s hard to imagine him going from a slow walk to 100% in three weeks.  If he’s not fully healthy until December then there would be little point in him playing at all this season.  If you are holding him on your roster, you may want to consider moving him.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) will likely be out until the November 9th game.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jake Plummer (Den) did not practice on Wednesday and only partially participated (only throwing short passes) in Thursday’s session due to his injured shoulder.  His status for this weekend’s game is in doubt.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) is still bothered by his bruised leg, but he will play this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) did not practice on Thursday due to his bruised arm.  The team expects him to play this weekend.

Running backs

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) will be rested often this weekend as the team will play at Arizona.  Head coach Brian Billick says he expects to give Chester Taylor 8-10 carries in order to keep Lewis fresh in the high heat.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Stephen Davis (Car) is on pace to rush 420 times this season.  The team (rightfully so) believes that will be far too many and says that DeShaun Foster will be worked into the rotation more often.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) jogged on Thursday and is expected to return to practice on Monday.  The team is targeting the November 2nd game for his possible return.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Mike Cloud (NE) should be more up to speed on the Patriots offense this weekend and will have a bigger role than he did last week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi) practiced on Wednesday and will play this weekend despite his injured knee.

Wide Receivers

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Peerless Price (Atl) did not practice on Thursday and was downgraded to doubtful on the injury report.  The fact that the Falcons don’t play until Monday night could help Price recover and get on the field.

Tight Ends

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** TE John Davis (Chi) will be eligible to return from the PUP list on October 13th.  The team will be allowed three weeks to determine if he will make the active roster.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** P Chris Hanson (Jac) will be out at least 4-6 weeks after chopping his non-kicking leg with an axe while in the Jaguars team locker room.  Yeah, that’s right.  Hanson (the same guy that burned himself last summer while making fondue with his wife) needed surgery to close up a gash on his leg Thursday after he mis-chopped while using an axe to hack at the massive tree stump that head coach Jack Del Rio placed in the locker room a few weeks ago.  Former Dolphin Mark Royals will take Hanson’s spot.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** KR Michael Lewis (NO) did not practice on Thursday and has been downgraded to doubtful for this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** LB T.J. Slaughter (Jac) was added to the injury report as probable with his bad hamstring.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** LB Junior Seau (Mia) partially practiced on Thursday and will try to go again on Friday.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** S Kenoy Kennedy (Den) re-aggravated his ankle during Thursday’s practice.  However, he was able to return to finish practice.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** CB Deltha O’Neal (Den) may be suffering from a confidence problem after his horrible performance last week against the Chiefs.  There is even talk of Kelly Herndon starting in his place this weekend.  It will be interesting to see how O’Neal responds.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** S Tebucky Jones (NO) was able to practice again on Thursday.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** S Brian Dawkins (Phi) is not on crutches anymore as reported yesterday.  Instead, he uses a cane to assist his walking.  Needless to say, he’s not playing this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** CB Bobby Taylor (Phi) has been ruled out of this weekend’s game.  Lito Sheppard will get the start.

ALL OF THE NEWS

Quarterbacks

QB Michael Vick (Atl) is still out with his broken leg.  He is still on target to play the first game in November.

Note that all Cincinnati QBs have a bye this week.

QB Tim Couch (Cle) will continue to start for the team

QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) is still hobbling around and most likely will not be able to play this weekend. ` QB Jake Plummer (Den) reaggravated his (throwing) shoulder injury last Sunday and did not practice on Wednesday.  He plans to test it Thursday and try to go on Friday.  His playing status for this weekend is in doubt.

Note that all Detroit QBs have a bye this week.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) finally admitted that his throwing shoulder is bruised, but he says it is not affecting his play.  He did not practice on Tuesday.

QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) has been named the team's starting QB for the remainder of the season.  This has to be the most underwhelming announcement in Jaguars history.  Head coach Jack Del Rio has wanted to make this move for some time, but he seemed hesitant to bench the veteran Mark Brunell.  The injury to Brunell gave the team the perfect situation.  If Leftwich bombed, Brunell would return.  Since Leftwich performed well, he remains the starting QB.

Note that all Minnesota QBs have a bye this week.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) is actually listed as doubtful this week. Don't get too excited though, he's not ready to play yet.  However, he took part in practice on Monday and threw a good number of passes.  He could return to game action as soon as October 26th.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) is still bothered by his bruised leg, but he will play this weekend.

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) has to work through a confidence problem according to head coach Bill Cowher.  The bigger problem is that it also appears that Cowher has a little problem with his confidence in Maddox.  One thing is certain: Tommy Maddox needs to play better.

Note that all San Diego QBs have a bye this week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) did not practice on Thursday due to his bruised arm.  The team expects him to play this weekend.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) is still having trouble with a sprain in his non-throwing shoulder.  However, he practiced fine on Wednesday and will start this weekend is usual.

Running Backs

RB Marcel Shipp (Ari) is now the team's starting RB with the injury to Emmitt Smith.

RB Emmitt Smith (Ari) will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken scapula.  Head coach Dave McGinnis said that Smith will be the starter again when he is healthy.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) will be rested often this weekend as the team will play at Arizona.  Head coach Brian Billick says he expects to give Chester Taylor 8-10 carries in order to keep Lewis fresh in the high heat.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) is still suffering from his rib injury, but he is expected to start this weekend.

RB Willis McGahee (Buf) has passed his physical and could begin practicing with the team next week.

RB Sammy Morris (Buf) is still out recovering from hernia surgery.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Stephen Davis (Car) is on pace to rush 420 times this season.  The team (rightfully so) believes that will be far too many and says that DeShaun Foster will be worked into the rotation more often.

RB Rabih Abdullah (Chi) was charged with a DUI after being involved in a car accident in which he suffered a concussion.  He will not play this weekend.

Note that all Cincinnati RBs have a bye this week.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) was held out of last weekend's game with the intent of him being fully healthy after the team's bye week.  Although he did not practice on Wednesday, the October 19th game is still Dillon's targeted return.

Note that all Detroit RBs have a bye this week.

FB Nicolas Luchey (GB) may be able to play this weekend despite his broken thumb.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) is recovering from his back injury.  He doesn't seem to be 100%, and the team is winning without him.  The Colts have a bye after this Sunday's game, and they believe two more solid weeks of rest will get James completely healthy.  He did practice "sparingly" on Wednesday and has already been declared a game-time decision. Stay tuned.

RB James Mungro (Ind) sat out Wednesday's practice with an injured knee.

RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) did not practice on Wednesday but should return for Thursday's session.

RB Ricky Williams (Ind) will start if Edgerrin James doesn't play this weekend.

Note that all Minnesota RBs have a bye this week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) jogged on Thursday and is expected to return to practice on Monday.  The team is targeting the November 2nd game for his possible return.

RB Mike Cloud (NE) burst upon the scene for the Patriots in spectacular fashion.  He is likely the healthiest RB on the squad, but there is some doubt about how many plays he can handle this quickly.  Still, with Faulk and Smith hobbled, Cloud will see action this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Mike Cloud (NE) should be more up to speed on the Patriots offense this weekend and will have a bigger role than he did last week.

RB Antowain Smith (NE) has a shoulder injury but could be able to play this weekend.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) is still out with his injured hand.

RB Mike Alstott (TB) has been lost for this season after being placed on the injured reserve list with a neck injury.  One player will not replace him as he was the team's RB-of-all-trades.  However, look for an increased role for starting RB Michael Pittman as he will be expected to handle the goal line work.  Jameel Cook will now start at FB.  Aaron Stecker (has been upgraded to probable) should see a little more action as well.  Thomas Jones could even be pulled away from the Gatorade for a play or two.

RB Eddie George (Ten) describes his performance this season as "disgusting".  Eddies a big guy and we're not going to argue with him.

WR Ron Johnson (Bal) is out with a knee injury.
