Players in the News (Saturday's Edition)

SATURDAY UPDATES

Quarterbacks

*** SATURDAY OPINION (GRAY & BRYANT) *** QB Jake Plummer (Den) Trying to dissect Mike Shanahan's comments is never an easy task, but here goes. When has Shanahan been forthcoming in the media when concerning the injury status of his players? Plummer was not asked to throw more than 20 yards at any time this week. Will he suddenly be able to throw deep by Sunday afternoon? Even though Shanahan says Plummer looks like he will be ready to go on Sunday, we believe Steve Beuerlein let the cat out of the bag on Friday when he told the media he was preparing to start this weekend's game. Shanahan simply wants to keep the Steelers in the dark regarding the Broncos' QB situation. But then again, maybe Beuerlein's in on the game too… The trouble with this call is that the Bronco's game is a 4 pm ET game so this likely won't be decided until well after the 1 pm kickoffs. If you made us make a call here (and that's what you pay us for), we'd say it's about a 65% chance that Beuerlein starts.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Mark Brunell (Jac) is still the team's 3rd string QB.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) will start this weekend.

Running Backs

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Jamel White (Cle) is not pleased about losing his backup RB job to James Jackson while White was injured in the preseason. White said, "I didn't know you could lose your job due to an injury." Evidently, you can in Cleveland. What does that mean for Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb?

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** FB Nicolas Luchey (GB) may not play this week, but is expected on the set of Newlyweds this week with wife Jessica Simpson.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Stacey Mack (Hou) says the Titans defense "really didn't look too good" defending the Patriots rushing attack last Sunday. When Titans LB Keith Bulluck was apprised of those comments, he replied to Mack saying: "He's a good running back, but they're not going to run the ball. I don't care if it's Stacey Mack, Alvin Mack, whoever Mack, Big Mac. It don't matter. They're not going to run it." Bulluck continued by adding, "The last team that came up here and talked like that was the Pittsburgh Steelers, and their quarterback didn't finish the game (last season when Tommy Maddox left the game on a stretcher), you know what I'm saying. They just had a long trip back to Pittsburgh. They're a good team but .... Any team that I'm on, no team is going to try and disrespect us like that." Now, that's good stuff right there.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) is still suffering from flu symptoms. And there is still some worry about how good his back feels. One thing to consider is that the Colts have their bye next week so that might factor into whether James plays or not. Looks like it will still be a game time decision.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Brian Westbrook (Phi) will likely play less on special teams and more in the regular offense in the coming weeks. He is obviously the most productive RB on the roster at the moment.

Wide Receivers

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Brian Finneran (Atl) will wear a protective brace on his hand this weekend. He will play.

Tight Ends

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** TE James Whalen (Dal) has been limited all week and might sit this weekend.

Place Kickers & Special Teamers

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** KR Reggie Swinton (Det) was claimed by the Lions after being waived this week by the Packers.

Offensive Linemen

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** T Willie Roaf (KC) is still listed as questionable but seems to be making improvement.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** T Chris Terry (Sea) has officially been placed on the active roster after serving his NFL suspension. CB Doug Evans was released to make room for Terry.

Defensive Linemen

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** DE Jerome McDougle (Phi) will not play this weekend due to his injured ankle.

Linebackers

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** LB Robert Thomas (StL) believes he'll be able to play this weekend but no official words has been given.

Defensive Backs

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** S Jason Sehorn (StL) has experienced a setback in his recovery from a broken foot. He is now not even running or putting extra weight on the foot.

ALL OF THE NEWS

Quarterbacks

QB Michael Vick (Atl) is still out with his broken leg. He is still on target to play the first game in November.

*** THURSDAY OPINION (GRAY) *** QB Michael Vick (Atl) is still only walking and is in too much pain to run or throw vigorously. The team says they are still targeting Vick's return in on November 2nd, but we believe it might not happen. If the Falcons keep losing, there will be little reason to hurry him back so obviously Vick will not return until he is 100%. It's hard to imagine him going from a slow walk to 100% in three weeks.

Note that all Cincinnati QBs have a bye this week.

QB Tim Couch (Cle) will continue to start for the team

QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) is still hobbling around and most likely will not be able to play this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) will likely be out until the November 9th game.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) seems to be improving. It's possible he would be available before November if Couch struggled badly or was injured.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) reaggravated his (throwing) shoulder injury last Sunday and did not practice on Wednesday. He plans to test it Thursday and try to go on Friday. His playing status for this weekend is in doubt.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jake Plummer (Den) did not practice on Wednesday and only partially participated (only throwing short passes) in Thursday's session due to his injured shoulder. His status for this weekend's game is in doubt.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Jake Plummer (Den) is still iffy for this weekend. John Clayton said this evening on ESPN that it looks like Plummer will start this weekend. However, back-up QB Steve Beuerlein said on Friday that he (Beuerlein) is prepared to start for the Broncos after taking the majority of the snaps with the first team on Thursday and Friday. When asked if he expected to be the starter, Beuerlein said, "I expect that to be the case right now, yeah. With the reps I took (Friday) and the general feeling that I get, yeah. I've seen more surprising things happen in my life, but I would expect that to be the case. To have this opportunity right now to help out and contribute and help keep this team on track, that's what I came back for." Finally, head coach Mike Shanahan said Friday, "Jake is feeling a lot better, so that's a good sign. "Unless there's a setback, he'll be ready to go." Plummer did not attempt a pass over 20 yards on Thursday and Friday though while Steve Beuerlein took the majority of the first team snaps. What makes this situation very tough for fantasy players is it is a good matchup for either Denver QB, but the game is an afternoon game so information could be sketchy before submitting your lineup. We advise people to be very cautious here and will continue to send updates up until Sunday morning advising of the situation. We can see this going either way at the moment.

If you made us make a call here (and that's what you pay us for), we'd say it's about a 65% chance that Beuerlein starts.

Note that all Detroit QBs have a bye this week.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) finally admitted that his throwing shoulder is bruised, but he says it is not affecting his play. He did not practice on Tuesday.

QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) has been named the team's starting QB for the remainder of the season. This has to be the most underwhelming announcement in Jaguars history. Head coach Jack Del Rio has wanted to make this move for some time, but he seemed hesitant to bench the veteran Mark Brunell. The injury to Brunell gave the team the perfect situation. If Leftwich bombed, Brunell would return. Since Leftwich performed well, he remains the starting QB.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Mark Brunell (Jac) is still the team's 3rd string QB.

Note that all Minnesota QBs have a bye this week.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Daunte Culpepper (Min) practiced fully on Friday and will be ready to start when the team returns from their bye.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) is actually listed as doubtful this week. Don't get too excited though, he's not ready to play yet. However, he took part in practice on Monday and threw a good number of passes. He could return to game action as soon as October 26th.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) practiced on Wednesday and Thursday and even took some practice snaps with the scout team on Friday. The team expects him to participate in the team sessions beginning next week. Barring any setbacks, there is a decent chance that he could get some action in the week seven contest against the Texans. He might be able to actually start in week eight.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) is still bothered by his bruised leg, but he will play this weekend.

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) has to work through a confidence problem according to head coach Bill Cowher. The bigger problem is that it also appears that Cowher has a little problem with his confidence in Maddox. One thing is certain: Tommy Maddox needs to play better.

Note that all San Diego QBs have a bye this week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) did not practice on Thursday due to his bruised arm. The team expects him to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) returned to practice on Friday and should start this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) will start this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Steve McNair (Ten) lost 31 yards passing last Sunday. The Elias Sports Bureau has reduced Steve McNair's passing yardage in New England from 391 to 360. McNair was credited with 39 yards when he passed to Erron Kinney in the fourth quarter. Kinney tried a lateral to Robert Holcombe, but the ball hit the ground before Holcombe picked it up. Elias ruled since the ball hit the ground before Holcombe picked it up McNair should have only been credited with eight yards.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) is still having trouble with a sprain in his non-throwing shoulder. However, he practiced fine on Wednesday and will start this weekend is usual.

Running Backs

RB Marcel Shipp (Ari) is now the team's starting RB with the injury to Emmitt Smith.

RB Emmitt Smith (Ari) will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken scapula. Head coach Dave McGinnis said that Smith will be the starter again when he is healthy.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) will be rested often this weekend as the team will play at Arizona. Head coach Brian Billick says he expects to give Chester Taylor 8-10 carries in order to keep Lewis fresh in the high heat.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Lee Suggs (Bal) will be eligible to come off the reserve/non-football injury list and is eager to begin practicing with the team.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) is still suffering from his rib injury, but he is expected to start this weekend.

RB Willis McGahee (Buf) has passed his physical and could begin practicing with the team next week.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Willis McGahee (Buf) will begin practicing with the team on October 15th.

RB Sammy Morris (Buf) is still out recovering from hernia surgery.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Stephen Davis (Car) is on pace to rush 420 times this season. The team (rightfully so) believes that will be far too many and says that DeShaun Foster will be worked into the rotation more often.

RB Rabih Abdullah (Chi) was charged with a DUI after being involved in a car accident in which he suffered a concussion. He will not play this weekend.

Note that all Cincinnati RBs have a bye this week.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) was held out of last weekend's game with the intent of him being fully healthy after the team's bye week. Although he did not practice on Wednesday, the October 19th game is still Dillon's targeted return.

Note that all Detroit RBs have a bye this week.

FB Nicolas Luchey (GB) may be able to play this weekend despite his broken thumb.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** FB Nicolas Luchey (GB) practiced on Friday but likely will sit this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** FB Nicolas Luchey (GB) may not play this week, but is expected on the set of Newlyweds this week with wife Jessica Simpson.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Stacey Mack (Hou) is very bothered by his turf toe. He will play this weekend, but Domanick Davis will get a great deal of carries as well. Tony Hollings will also be active and available if Mack's injuries limit him further. Needless to say, Mack is not a very good play this weekend.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) is recovering from his back injury. He doesn't seem to be 100%, and the team is winning without him. The Colts have a bye after this Sunday's game, and they believe two more solid weeks of rest will get James completely healthy. He did practice "sparingly" on Wednesday and has already been declared a game-time decision. Stay tuned.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) practiced Wednesday and Thursday and is looking better but it's still going to be a game time decision for him. Says head coach Tony Dungy: "It was a good sign coming back on the second day -- I'm optimistic about his chances this week. It will be [a] game-time [decision], but if he goes three practices in a row without any problems, he should be fine."

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) missed practice on Friday due to the flu. He is still a game-time decision. "Edge today just wasn't feeling well," head coach Tony Dungy said. "Back-wise, everything was fine, but he's got some flu-like symptoms. We've had that with a couple of guys, so we kind of let him stay away from everybody. But I think, soreness-wise, he was OK."

RB James Mungro (Ind) sat out Wednesday's practice with an injured knee.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB James Mungro (Ind) was able to practice on Friday.

RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) did not practice on Wednesday but should return for Thursday's session.

RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) was able to practice Thursday and Friday.

RB Ricky Williams (Ind) will start if Edgerrin James doesn't play this weekend.

Note that all Minnesota RBs have a bye this week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) jogged on Thursday and is expected to return to practice on Monday. The team is targeting the November 2nd game for his possible return.

RB Mike Cloud (NE) burst upon the scene for the Patriots in spectacular fashion. He is likely the healthiest RB on the squad, but there is some doubt about how many plays he can handle this quickly. Still, with Faulk and Smith hobbled, Cloud will see action this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Mike Cloud (NE) should be more up to speed on the Patriots offense this weekend and will have a bigger role than he did last week.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Mike Cloud (NE) is expected to start for the team this weekend.

RB Kevin Faulk (NE) was close to being able to play some last Sunday, but he was held out with his injured leg. He did not practice on Wednesday but might be able to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Kevin Faulk (NE) was able to practice on Friday and should be able to play this weekend.

FB Fred McCrary (NE) has been re-signed by the team after being released last week.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** FB Fred McCrary (NE) was able to practice on Thursday and Friday.

RB Antowain Smith (NE) has a shoulder injury but could be able to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Antowain Smith (NE) sat out of Friday's practice and will likely sit this weekend with his injured shoulder.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi) practiced again on Friday.

Note that all San Diego RBs have a bye this week.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Lamar Gordon (StL) practiced on Friday and is expected to start this weekend. He will be backed up by Arlen Harris.

RB Mike Alstott (TB) has been lost for this season after being placed on the injured reserve list with a neck injury. One player will not replace him as he was the team's RB-of-all-trades. However, look for an increased role for starting RB Michael Pittman as he will be expected to handle the goal line work. Jameel Cook will now start at FB. Aaron Stecker (has been upgraded to probable) should see a little more action as well. Thomas Jones could even be pulled away from the Gatorade for a play or two.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Aaron Stecker (TB) was able to practice on Friday despite his knee injury.

RB Eddie George (Ten) describes his performance this season as "disgusting". Eddies a big guy and we're not going to argue with him.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Brian Finneran (Atl) will wear a protective brace on his hand this weekend. He will play.

WR Peerless Price (Atl) should be able to play this weekend despite his foot injury (the same one he played "fairly" well on last Sunday.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Peerless Price (Atl) did not practice on Thursday and was downgraded to doubtful on the injury report. The fact that the Falcons don't play until Monday night could help Price recover and get on the field.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Peerless Price (Atl) was upgraded to questionable and practiced on Friday. He should play this weekend.

WR Ron Johnson (Bal) is out with a knee injury.

WR Eric Moulds (Buf) has a groin injury that was suffered while leading his team to victory in overtime last Sunday. He did not practice on Wednesday and could miss this weekend's game If Moulds does sit, look for Bobby Shaw to start with Josh Reed.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Eric Moulds (Buf) was unable to practice Friday but head coach Gregg Williams would not officially rule him out for Sunday's game against the New York Jets. "We will work him out Sunday morning," said Williams. "He's a remarkable athlete on what he's been able to do. Would I play him if he could go? Yes." We're not optimistic here about his chances but as Williams said, it will come down to Sunday morning for a decision.

WR Marty Booker (Chi) practiced on Wednesday despite his injured ribs and is expected to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Marty Booker (Chi) has been practicing and will start this weekend.

Note that all Minnesota WRs have a bye this week.

Hanson (the same guy that burned himself last summer while making fondue with his wife) needed surgery to close up a gash on his leg Thursday after he mis-chopped while using an axe to hack at the massive tree stump that head coach Jack Del Rio placed in the locker room a few weeks ago. Former Dolphin Mark Royals will take Hanson's spot.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** P Chris Hanson (Jac) has been placed on the reserve/non-football injury list. Mark Royals has been signed to handle the punting.

Note that all Minnesota PKs have a bye this week.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** T Willie Roaf (KC) did not practice on Friday and will be a game-time decision for this weekend's game.
