Quarterbacks
Note that
all Arizona QBs have a bye this week.
QB Kurt Kittner (Atl) has been named the team’s starting QB for this weekend. There is nothing physically wrong with Doug
Johnson. This is simply a desperation
move by the Falcons.
QB Michael Vick (Atl) threw the ball with a little more force on Monday
and still hopes to be able to play on November 2nd. However, he still is not doing anything more
than light jogging. Listening to Vick speak about his return is a bit troubling: "The only thing I can do to help this team win is get
healthy," Vick said after his backup, Doug Johnson,
threw his NFL-leading 10th interception. "There's nothing else I can do. I
have control over nothing right now. I don't even prepare myself to play
because I'm not going to play. What's the use?" Further, Vick reiterated in the Falcons'
locker room Monday night that he doesn't know when his foot will stop hurting
and he'll be able to push off his toes.
That doesn’t sound like a man raring to get back in the lineup to us.
QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) has been benched in order for Chris Chandler to
start for the team this weekend. Stewart has received public support from head
coach Dick Jauron all season. However,
at Monday’s press conference, Jauron said that “every position is on the
table”. To top it off, Stewart is listed
as questionable with a leg injury. This was
a logical time for the Bears to make a move, and they did.
QB Tim Couch (Cle) will continue as the team’s starting QB at least until Kelly Holcomb is
completely healthy. Holcomb is still not
completely healthy and don’t be surprised to see Couch remain the starter if he
keeps playing well.
QB Jake Plummer (Den) will miss the next 4-5 weeks with a broken bone in
his left foot. Steve Beuerlein will continue
as the team’s starting QB.
QB Joey Harrington (Det) was held out of a few practices last week while
the team had their bye in order to rest a bit.
He returned to action on Monday and will start this weekend.
Note that
all Indianapolis QBs have a bye this week.
Note that
all Jacksonville QBs have a bye this week.
QB Mark Brunell (Jac) underwent surgery on his elbow to reduce swelling
in the joint. He will be out for 2-3
weeks. When he returns, it will not be
as the starting QB. That role belongs
to Byron Leftwich for the remainder of the season. In other news, sources report that Brunell
has told people that he would like to be the starting QB in Miami next season. Failing becoming a Dolphin, he wouldn’t mind
playing for any of the team’s in California.
Obviously, staying in Jacksonville is not high on Brunell’s list of
things-to-do.
QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) received a vote of confidence from head coach Dave
Wannstedt. However, Wannstedt also said
that the passing game must and will improve.
According to Wannstedt, that improvement will occur with Fiedler as the
team’s starting QB. He also said WR
Derrius Thompson will not be benched.
QB Daunte Culpepper (Min) will resume the starting QB duties this week as he is
recovered from his back fractures.
QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) has begun participating in team drills and will
be the Jets #3 QB this weekend. At the moment,
there is a 50/50 shot that Pennington will start on October 26th.
QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) has a sprained thumb (in his throwing hand) but
will continue to be the team’s starting QB.
This is horrible news for a QB because it affects the grip on the
ball. McNabb did practice on Wednesday.
Note that
all Pittsburgh QBs have a bye this week.

Running Backs
Note that
all Arizona RBs have a bye this week.
RB Jamal
Lewis (Bal) has a sore shoulder. He will be limited in practice this week but
is expected to start this weekend as normal.
RB Musa
Smith (Bal) has yet to see game action this season,
but he is finally healthy. The team
hopes he’ll be able to help give Jamal Lewis some rest as the season wears on.
RB Travis
Henry (Buf) still has soreness in his ribs, but he is expected to start this
weekend.
RB Willis
McGahee (Buf) has been cleared by team doctors to practice. After practicing on Wednesday, McGahee said,
“everything’s good”.
He could see game action in 2-3 weeks.
RB Sammy
Morris (Buf) is improving from his hernia surgery, but he will likely sit
another week.
RB Stephen
Davis (Car) suffered a bruised arm last Sunday.
He was able to practice on Wednesday and should play this weekend. He will likely lose a few carries to DeShaun
Foster as the team wants to keep Davis healthy for the entire season. Davis will likely not approach 25-30
carries per game from here on out. That
is simply too much work for him.
RB Anthony
Thomas (Chi) has a sprained foot that could very well keep him on the sidelines
this weekend. If Thomas can’t go, Adrian
Peterson will get the start for the team.
RB Corey
Dillon (Cin) returned to the practice field on Monday and expects to start this
weekend. However, the team will wait to
see how he responds to a week of practice before making an official
announcement.
RB Artose
Pinner (Det) is eligible to come off the PUP list. The team will have three weeks to decide if
they want to activate him or shelve him for the entire season.
RB Tony
Fisher (GB) suffered a groin injury last Sunday and might miss this weekend’s
game.
RB Domanick
Davis (Hou) “impressed” head coach Dom Capers with his play last Sunday. Capers said, "As a guy produces, you're
going to try and get him on the field as much as you possibly can." It looks like Davis is making a move to become the
team’s primary RB.
Note that
all Indianapolis RBs have a bye this week.
RB Edgerrin
James (Ind) has now admitted to having
suffered damage to his transverse process (lower back) when the helmet of a Jacksonville player slammed into his back in a
Sept. 21 game. The transverse process is
a small lateral projection off the right and left sides of each vertebra, and
functions as an attachment site for muscles and ligaments of the spine. James has one broken bone along with a
hairline fracture of another. "All
you can do is let it rest," said James, who has missed three games. Since James was injured, the Colts have
described James' predicament as a sore back. Team officials have declined to be
specific. He's been listed as "questionable" on the NFL's injury
report, even though he has practiced twice in each of the past two weeks. "The doctors have told me when he's
pain-free and he can't do any more damage to his back, he'll play," said
head coach Tony Dungy. James practiced on Wednesday and says he
expects to play after the team’s bye week.
RB Ricky
Williams (Ind) suffered an ankle sprain last Sunday. The team hopes he will get healthy over the
bye week, but he might miss the week eight game.
Note that
all Jacksonville RBs have a bye this week.
RB Chris
Fuamatu-Ma’afala (Jac) has moved past LaBrandon Toefield as the team’s #2
RB. Fuamatu-Ma’afala is expected to be
given more looks in short yardage packages.
FB Rob
Konrad (Mia) will likely not play this weekend with his knee injury. Obafemi Ayanbadejo will start in Konrad’s place.
RB Michael
Bennett (Min) has been running and doing agility drills and should begin
practicing with the team next week. The
hope is that he can return to game action by week nine. Rumors had the Vikings shopping Doug Chapman
before the trading deadline passed. If
true, that speaks well towards their feelings that Bennett will be able to come
back this season.
FB Larry
Centers (NE) has a knee injury and will likely sit this weekend.
RB Antowain
Smith (NE) is still bothered by his injured shoulder. His status for this weekend is not fully
known.
FB Jon
Ritchie (Phi) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend despite his
hamstring injury.
RB Brian
Westbrook (Phi) has a hip pointer. He
was able to practice Wednesday and should be able to play this weekend.
Note that
all Pittsburgh RBs have a bye this week.
RB Kevan
Barlow (SF) was the apparent target of the Dallas Cowboys in a trade
attempt. General manager Terry Donahue
said he told the Cowboys that the team did not want to trade Barlow. There’s no truth to the rumor that Donahue
added, “we like the way he sits on our bench”.
FB Fred
Beasley (SF) suffered a rib strain and sat out of Wednesday’s practice. He should be able to play this weekend.
RB Shaun
Alexander (Sea) is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. It doesn’t seem
to be too serious but keep an eye on it this week..
RB Mack
Strong (Sea) suffered a hamstring injury last Sunday but hopes to be able to
play this weekend.
RB Marshall
Faulk (StL) may be able to return from his broken hand as early as October 26th. Faulk is recovering from a broken left hand
and surgery on his right knee. He underwent a scan on Tuesday to check on his
progress, and everything sounded positive. "I didn't know they had already
taken a scan and from what the doctor told me this morning the scan was better
than what they anticipated, so he was very hopeful about the possibility here
in another week or so," head coach Mike Martz said.
RB Lamar
Gordon (StL) lightly sprained an ankle and re-aggravated his injured wrist last
Sunday but is expected to start again this weekend.
FB Cecil
Martin (TB) was signed by the team.
RB Michael
Pittman (TB) will not go to court during the NFL season. His probation revocation hearing has been
moved from November 17th to January 12th.
RB Travis
Stephens (TB) has been released from the team’s practice squad.
RB Chris
Brown (Ten) has a bad hamstring. His
status for this weekend is not fully known.
RB Ladell
Betts (Was) will get the bulk of the load this weekend of Trung Canidate can
not play. However, Sultan McCullough should
get some carries as well.
RB Trung
Canidate (Was) suffered a high ankle sprain last Sunday. He did not practice on Wednesday and probably
will not play this weekend. Official
word has not been given, but with a bye coming next week, conventional wisdom
says Canidate will sit out this Sunday.

to play after the team’s bye week.

known.

WR Eric Moulds (Buf) did not practice on

own. He will still miss 4-8 weeks. Bill Schroeder and Az-Zahir Hakim will start
for the team while Rogers is out.

Note that
all Indianapolis WRs have a bye this week.
Note that all
Jacksonville WRs have a bye this week.

Hatchette to the bench). Thanks for the
newsflash. Edwards has been outplaying
Hatchette all three weeks he’s been in Jacksonville.
WR J.J.
Stokes (Jac) was inactive last week and will likely continue in his role as the
team’s unneeded WR.

Bates (Min) was not able to fully run on Monday and may not be able to play
this weekend.
WR Nate
Burleson (Min) will continue as the team’s #2 WR.

to a week’s worth of practice. However,
it is likely that he will not play until next week.
WR Todd
Pinkston (Phi) has a bruised knee and did not practice on Wednesday, but he hopes
to be able to play this weekend.
Note that
all Pittsburgh WRs have a bye this week.
WR Reche
Caldwell (SD) is still out with his dislocated wrist.
WR Eric Parker (SD) has an injured
shoulder. He was able to practice on
Wednesday, but his status for this weekend is not fully known.

his thigh injury.

injured leg. He might be able to return
next week.

Furrey (StL) is out with an injury that is classified on the injury report as
“other”. He underwent an emergency
appendectomy Tuesday night. Shaun
McDonald will be the team’s #4 WR.

Jurevicius (TB) will likely miss another week as he continues to recover from
his knee sprain.
WR Darrell
Hill (Ten) is still bothered by his back injury. His status for this weekend is not fully
known.
WR
Laveranues Coles (Was) has caught at least five passes in 19 straight
games. That hasn’t happened since the
NFL and AFL merged in 1970.
