Players in the News (Saturday Edition)

SATURDAY UPDATES

Quarterbacks

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Tim Couch (Cle) looks like a slight favorite to start for the team this weekend, but the official announcement will not be made until game-time.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) did not practice on Friday or Saturday. He likely will not be healthy enough to play this weekend. Of course it doesn't hurt that the opponent is the woeful Chargers. The team feels they can rest Fiedler and 'get by' with Griese at the helm.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Brian Griese (Mia) could very well be the team's starting QB on Monday as it appears that Jay Fiedler's knee is simply not healthy enough for him to play. Note that Griese is still not 100% recovered from his pre-season toe injury and will likely wear a protective shoe.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Danny Wuerffel (FA) is no closer to becoming a Redskin as negotiations between his agent and the team have stalled.

Running Backs

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Brock Forsey (Chi) could be the main RB on 1st and 2nd downs if Anthony Thomas and Adrian Peterson both sit. RB Rabih Abdullah (Chi) has been mentioned as the team's 3rd down back this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB William Green (Cle) did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday (and was limited on Friday) is officially a game-time decision with his injured shoulder. He should play (he's listed as probable on the injury report) but will be limited at best. If Green can't go, James Jackson will get the start.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Antowain Smith (NE) practiced again on Friday and has a decent chance to play this weekend (although he is still questionable).

Wide Receivers

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) has been downgraded to doubtful and will likely sit this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Deion Branch (NE) practiced all week and should play this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR David Patten (NE) is still battling his injured knee, but he practiced all week and should play this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Wayne Chrebet (NYJ) is officially a game-time decision, but it looks like he should play this weekend. However, Curtis Conway will be the starter opposite Santana Moss.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) practiced on Friday and should play this weekend.

Tight Ends

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** TE Daniel Graham (NE) is still battling his injured shoulder, but he practiced all week and should play this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** S Je'Rod Cherry (NE) did not practice on Friday and should sit this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** CB Ty Law (NE) practiced on Friday and looks like a game-time decision.

ALL OF THE NEWS

Quarterbacks

Note that all Atlanta QBs have a bye this week.

QB Michael Vick (Atl) is finally jogging and says he feels better. However, he will not return until he is 100%, and that date has not been set.

QB Kyle Boller (Bal) suffered a sprain in his non-throwing shoulder last Sunday.  He practiced on Wednesday and should be able to play this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Kyle Boller (Bal) has been upgraded to probable on the injury report and (barring a setback) will start this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Kyle Boller (Bal) has practiced all week and should start this weekend.

QB Randy Fasani (Buf) has been signed to the team's practice squad.

QB Chris Chandler (Chi) will again start for the injured Kordell Stewart.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Chris Chandler (Chi) is starting due to Kordell Stewart's ineffectiveness.  Of course everyone 'knew' that already, but the team has actually admitted this.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Rex Grossman (Chi) may soon be playing in Chicago.  Grossman said he is “a lot closer today that (he) was two weeks ago.  It’s been subtle hints.  They just said, ‘Be ready.  You could be playing soon.’”  Basically, if/when the Bears are getting blown-out, Grossman will likely see action.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) practiced on Wednesday but is out of the starting lineup.

QB Carson Palmer (Cin) is now the team's #2 QB as he has passed Shane Matthews for the role.

QB Tim Couch (Cle) lightly sprained his ankle and should be able to play this weekend.  He will likely start only if Kelly Holcomb is not physically able.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Tim Couch (Cle) looks like a slight favorite to start for the team this weekend, but the official announcement will not be made until game-time.

QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) is not 100%, but he practiced on Wednesday and could be on the field this weekend.  No announcement has been made on which QB will start (could be a game-time announcement), but it looks like Holcomb will if he is healthy enough.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) has admitted that in addition to the break in his leg, he also tore ligaments in his ankle. It is believed the torn ligaments are the reason his return is taking longer than expected.  In Thursday's practice, both Holcomb and Tim Couch took snaps with the first team offense.

QB Steve Beuerlein (Den) has been lost for this season after being placed on the injured reserve list with his broken finger.  The team re-signed Jarious Jackson to take Beuerlein's roster spot (and be the team's #2 QB until Jake Plummer returns).  Denver also worked out Jeff George, Todd Husak, Brandon Doman, and Mike Quinn but did not offer any of them a contract.

QB Danny Kanell (Den) will be the team's starting QB this weekend and both Jake Plummer and Steve Beuerlein are out with injuries.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Danny Kanell (Den) did not practice on Friday due to the flu.  He was given fluids through an IV and may not be available to play Sunday.  That leaves newly re-signed Jarious Jackson as the team’s only QB.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) is still out with his broken foot.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jake Plummer (Den) is healing on schedule and is no longer wearing a boot on his injured foot.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) was horrible last Sunday against Dallas, and there were rumblings that he could be benched this weekend in favor of Mike McMahon (who wasn't much better).  However, Harrington will continue as the team's starter.

Note that all Green Bay QBs have a bye this week.

QB Brett Favre (GB) has a hairline fracture his thumb (suffered in last Sunday's game) but the injury was downplayed by coach Mike Sherman who said he should be able to play after the team's bye week.

QB Mark Brunell (Jac) is still out with his elbow injury.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Trent Green (KC) did not practice on Thursday but should play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Trent Green (KC) returned to practice on Friday and should start this weekend.

QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) has a sprained MCL in his left knee.  His playing status will be determined on Sunday (the Dolphins play on Monday night), however he has told family members that he will play.  If Fiedler can't go, look for Brian Griese to get his first start of the season.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) partially participated in Wednesday's practice.  A decision on which QB will start will not be made until Sunday.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) worked with the first team on Thursday (as did Brian Griese), but he did not practice on Friday and has officially been named a game-time decision.  That means the starter will be named Monday rather than Sunday (as was originally thought).  For what it’s worth, Fiedler says he expects to start.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Brian Griese (Mia) took a good number of first team snaps in Wednesday's practice and looks ready to play if Jay Fiedler can not go on Monday.

QB Jamie Martin (NYJ) was released by the team.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) will not start this weekend, but he will be the team's #2 QB and should see action.  The team says he will start on November 2nd.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) described his feeling about the prospect of being able to play again: "I'm like a volcano, ready to erupt."  Indeed.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) will not start this weekend.  However, he will replace Vinny Testaverde at some point in the first half.

Note that all Oakland QBs have a bye this week.

QB Rich Gannon (Oak) has an extremely sore throwing shoulder.  The team says he likely would not be able to play if they had a game this weekend, and his status for November 2nd is in question.  If Gannon can't go, Marques Tuiasosopo will get the start, but it looks like if he's healthy, that Gannon will remain the team's starting QB.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Rich Gannon (Oak) could miss two weeks with his injured shoulder.  If so, Marques Tuiasosopo will start for the team after their bye week.  The most disconcerting part of this situation is that no one is divulging the exact nature of Gannon's injury.

QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) was horrible last Sunday but will likely continue as the team's starting QB as long as he doesn't suffer a setback with his bruised thumb.  He practiced on Wednesday without a protective wrap and hopes to play without it this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) practiced again without the protective wrapping on his finger.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) practiced all week without the wrapping on his finger.  He will also play without it this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Jeff Garcia (SF) partially participated in Wednesday's practice but should play this weekend.

QB Steve McNair (Ten) will have his day in court as his case on DUI and weapons charges has been sent to a grand jury.

Note that all Washington QBs have a bye this week.

QB Rob Johnson (Was) was released by the team to make room for Tim Hasselbeck to sign on.  Note that Hasselbeck instantly becomes the team's #2 QB.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) will most likely use the bye week to get over his nagging injuries.  He was able to practice on Wednesday.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Danny Wuerffel (FA) may be re-signed by the Redskins this season.  Of course that’s assuming that no other team snatches up this hot prospect.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Danny Wuerffel (FA) is no closer to becoming a Redskin as negotiations between his agent and the team have stalled.

Running Backs

RB Emmitt Smith (Ari) is still out with his broken shoulder.

Note that all Atlanta RBs have a bye this week.

RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) re-aggravated his injured shoulder last Sunday and likely will not be at 100% for the remainder of the season.  He will be limited in practice this week (as he was on Wednesday) but is expected to be able to play this weekend. He's calling it a "hurt not an injury".

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) has been upgraded to probable on the injury report.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) practiced on Friday and should start this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Willis McGahee (Buf) will not play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Willis McGahee (Buf) could see his first professional action on November 9th.

RB Sammy Morris (Buf) practiced on Monday and could return to action this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Sammy Morris (Buf) practiced on Wednesday.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB DeShaun Foster (Car) practiced on Thursday and should play this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Nick Goings (Car) did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday and might miss this weekend's game.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Rabih Abdullah (Chi) will start for the team this weekend if Anthony Thomas and Adrian Peterson can not play.  Brock Forsey should also see action.

RB Adrian Peterson (Chi) suffered an ankle sprain last Sunday.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Adrian Peterson (Chi) did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday.  He likely will sit this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Adrian Peterson (Chi) did not practice on Friday and should sit this weekend.

RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) missed last Sunday's game with his injured foot and did not practice on Wednesday, but the team hopes he will be able to take part in Friday's session.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) missed practice again on Thursday.  It now looks like he likely will not play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) did not practice on Friday and was downgraded to doubtful on the injury report.  He should sit this weekend.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) is once again tired of being a Bengal.  Dillon turned the spotlight on himself when he walked into the locker room Wednesday afternoon while reporters were talking to his teammates about the upcoming game.  "I want out," Dillon said aloud. "Trade me to Dallas."  Dillon later said he was joking about Dallas -- the trading deadline was Oct. 14 -- but not about his desire for change. He has two years left on his contract.  "I'm telling you, ain't nothing permanent, ain't nothing concrete," Dillon said. "You sign a contract with your wife -- you can get rid of her, can't you? And that's a lifetime contract. What I'm basically trying to say is, ain't nothing permanent, ain't nothing sketched in stone. There's ways out of anything."  During his seven-year career, Dillon has repeatedly groused that he doesn't get the ball enough. Dillon is one of only four players in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first six seasons.  In other news, Dillon did not practice on Wednesday and still isn't 100%.  The team says they did not plan on him practicing Wednesday, but he will probably play again this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Corey Dillon (Cin) did not practice on Thursday.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Corey Dillon (Cin) practiced on Friday and should play this weekend.

RB William Green (Cle) has an injured shoulder (and had his arm in a sling Monday), but he practiced Wednesday (on a limited basis) and should be able to play this weekend.  Note that James Jackson subbed for Green last Sunday and is the team's #2 RB.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB William Green (Cle) should play this weekend, but he likely will be at less than 100%.  That means James Jackson will likely have a bigger role in the offense this weekend.

RB Troy Hambrick (Dal) suffered a broken finger last Sunday but is expected to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Artose Pinner (Det) is still not healthy enough to return to practice and will remain on the PUP list for at least another week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB James Stewart (Det) says he will fully recover from his preseason shoulder injury and will play next season. If you're in a dynasty league (and he happens to be available in free agency), he would be a solid pickup.

Note that all Green Bay RBs have a bye this week.

RB Ahman Green (GB) practiced on Monday despite suffering an ankle injury last Sunday.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) has missed a few weeks with his broken back, but he says he will start this weekend.  To quote James: "I am playing."

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) practiced on Wednesday and (barring a setback) will play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) is ready and will return to the starting lineup this weekend.  However, Dominic Rhodes and Brian Allen will get some snaps in order to keep James from fatiguing.  Head coach Tony Dungy did say that James will be in the game in all of the “crucial situations.”

RB James Mungro (Ind) will miss this weekend's game after is knee surgery.

RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) will likely be the team's #2 RB this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) practiced on Wednesday and Thursday and will be the team's #2 RB this weekend.

RB Ricky Williams (Ind) will miss this weekend's game with his injured ankle.

FB Rob Konrad (Mia) did not play last week due to his knee injury but should be able to go this Monday.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Rob Konrad (Mia) partially participated in Wednesday's practice and (barring a setback) should play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** FB Rob Konrad (Mia) practiced on Thursday and Friday and should play this weekend.

RB Michael Bennett (Min) practiced with the team on Wednesday but will likely now wait until November 9th to return to the field.  It seems the team is concerned about his conditioning and doesn't want to rush him back into game action.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) was clocked in the 40-yard dash at a blistering 4.29 on Wednesday.  Of course, times clocked on the practice field are rarely completely accurate, but it does show that Bennett is capable of running at full speed.  That's awesome news.  Also, there is again a decent chance that Bennett will be able to play in the November 2nd game.

RB Larry Centers (NE) suffered a knee injury in week six and has been released by the team.  When he heals, Centers will likely re-sign with the Patriots.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Antowain Smith (NE) practiced on Wednesday.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Antowain Smith (NE) practiced again on Thursday.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Antowain Smith (NE) practiced again on Friday and has a decent chance to play this weekend (although he is still questionable).

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Deuce McAllister (NO) has rushed for 100+ yards in each of his last seven October games.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Tiki Barber (NYG) suffered a calf bruise in practice on Thursday and was added to the injury report as probable, but he practiced on Friday and should be at full speed this weekend.

RB Dorsey Levens (NYG) finally got some action last Sunday (16 carries for 64 yards) and will likely be a part of the offense for the remainder of the season. He replaced Tiki Barber to give Barber a breather. But Levens was effective and head coach Jim Fassel allowed him to stay in the game while Barber watched from the sidelines.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Dorsey Levens (NYG) is getting some first-team snaps in practice this week and will eat into Tiki Barber’s load for the rest of the season.  The combo of Levens and Barber may be the 2nd coming of Thunder and Lightning.  For his part, Levens is thrilled to finally have a role on the team.  “Before, I felt like I was just a practice squad guy,” he said. “It's fun to come to work, as opposed to just waking up going, ‘It’s time to make the doughnuts.’”  That’s good stuff there.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB LaMont Jordan (NYJ) did not practice on Wednesday, but he did go on Thursday and should play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB LaMont Jordan (NYJ) has been removed from the injury report and will play this weekend.

Note that all Oakland RBs have a bye this week.

RB Jerome Bettis (Pit) is now officially the team's starting RB.

RB Amos Zereoue (Pit) has lost his starting position but will be the team's 3rd down back.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Amos Zereoue (Pit) is not happy about losing his starting job, but he says he is now relieved.  He no longer has to worry about being pulled for making a mistake.  This move could make him a better player.  At least that's the spin he's putting on it.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) will likely practice a bit this week but shouldn't play until the November 2nd game as the team doesn't want to rush him back before he is at full strength.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Marshall Faulk (StL) practiced on Wednesday and Thursday.  He will likely serve as an emergency RB this weekend, but the team wants to hold him out of game action for another week.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Marshall Faulk (StL) will likely dress out this weekend but be available only in an emergency situation.

RB Lamar Gordon (StL) has a high ankle sprain and might miss this weekend's game.  He says his ankle "is really bothering (him) right now." For what it's worth, there's a good bit of talk that Gordon needs to toughen up.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Lamar Gordon (StL) did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday but did a little jogging on the sidelines Thursday.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Lamar Gordon (StL) again only ran on the sidelines during Friday’s practice.  He looks like a long shot to play this weekend.

RB Arlen Harris (StL) will be the team's starting RB for this weekend's game.

RB Chris Brown (Ten) will probably miss this weekend's game with his bad hamstring.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Brown (Ten) did not practice all week and will be a game-time decision at best.

RB Eddie George (Ten) had 18 carries last Sunday but was out gained by Robert Holcombe (who had 16 carries).  Holcombe plays in 3-WR sets. With the number of WRs on the roster, the team will likely play more 3-WR sets.  That means more time for Holcombe and less for George.

Note that all Washington RBs have a bye this week.

RB Ladell Betts (Was) will miss 1-3 weeks with his broken forearm.

RB Trung Canidate (Was) did not practice Wednesday but hopes to play in the November 2nd game after missing last Sunday with his injured ankle.

RB Sultan McCullough (Was) will get the start on November 2nd if neither Ladell Betts nor Trung Canidate is healthy enough to play.

Wide Receivers

WR Jason McAddley (Ari) is still out with his injured hamstring.

WR Bryan Gilmore (Ari) was able to practice Monday and Wednesday despite his injured ankle.  He should play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Muhsin Muhammad (Car) partially participated in Friday’s practice and will be a game-time decision for this weekend.

WR Marty Booker (Chi) did not play last Sunday with his injured ankle and did not practice on Wednesday, but he could return to action this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WRs Justin Gage & Bobby Wade (Chi) will rotate in the #3 WR spot this weekend.  Note that Chris Chandler worked a ton with these guys when he was the team’s #2 QB.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** Ahmad Merritt (Chi) will not play this weekend.

WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Cin) is still out his hamstring injury.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Kevin Johnson (Cle) is not seeing eye-to-eye with head coach Butch Davis.  Johnson admits to playing poorly last week.  When asked about Johnson's repeated use of the word stupid in a critique of his performance, Davis said, "Good observation."  If Johnson has another bad game, he could lose his starting position.

WR Chris Cole (Den) did not practice on Wednesday and will likely sit this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Chris Cole (Den) did not practice on Thursday but was able to jog.  He looks like a long shot to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Chris Cole (Den) did not practice on Friday and should sit this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Adrian Madise (Den) did not practice on Friday.

WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) is still bothered by his injured leg, but he practiced Wednesday and will likely play this weekend.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) missed Thursday's practice and now will like not play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) did not practice on Friday and should sit this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) has been downgraded to doubtful and will likely sit this weekend.

WR Charles Rogers (Det) is still out with his broken collarbone, and the team sure did miss him last Sunday.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** The Detroit coaching staff has said that their reserve WRs (Scotty Anderson and Shawn Jefferson) will get a little more work in the coming weeks.  That obviously means the starting WRs (Az-Zahir Hakim and Bill Schroeder) will get less work.  Actually, it really means they’ll play all four and go with the hot hand.  Or in their case, the lukewarm hand.

Note that all Green Bay WRs have a bye this week.

WR Javon Walker (GB) suffered a shoulder injury in Tuesday's practice but should be able to play when the team comes off their bye.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Javon Walker (GB) returned to practiced on Wednesday and is expected to be fine to play when the team returns from their bye.

Note that all Oakland WRs have a bye this week.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Greg Lewis (Phi) is being mentioned by head coach Andy Reid as a player that could jump start the Eagles offense. We shall see, but if the QB play doesn't improve the people catching the throws won't make a difference.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) has been limited in practice with his injured knee but should play this weekend.

*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) practiced on Friday and should play this weekend.

WR Reche Caldwell (SD) is getting better but will miss another 2-3 weeks with his injured wrist.
