Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Brett Favre (GB) - What broken thumb? He even won in the Metrodome. And for leagues that reward bonus points for crushing blocks, no one is better.

QB Marc Bulger (StL) - Make no mistake about it. He is the best fantasy QB in the league. He consistently throws for over 300 yards and the team has confidence in him.

QB Brad Johnson (TB) - Yes they lost, but Johnson and the passing game went over 300 yards and tossed a pair of TDs. He simply continues to produce quality stats.

QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) - Of course the opponent was the lowly Falcons, but sometimes a player just needs one good outing to get cranked up. If McNabb is going to salvage this season, yesterday's game will be the beginning.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) - He's back. With him in the lineup, the team is able to move the ball very well. He's as good as Peyton Manning at play-action fakes and that is saying something. The Jets are going to surprise some teams that expect a soft opponent based on their record.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Chris Chandler (Chi) - He is quietly playing some good football. He did not score a TD yesterday, but did connect on 21 of 30 pass attempts for 224 yards. When your receivers are Desmond Clark, Dez White, Justin Gage, Bobby Wade and Ahmad Merritt that is saying a lot.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Quincy Carter (Dal) - After looking horrible in week 8 and starting poorly in week 9, Quincy rebounded with solid play to finish out the game. He is still available in many leagues and is playing pretty solid football. Most importantly, the Cowboys are 6-2 and he believes he can play well.

*** Waiver Wire *** Tim Rattay (SF) - He has instantly created a controversy in SF after throwing for 3 TDs against rival St. Louis. We believe he is likely to get another start (Jeff Garcia has a high ankle sprain and could use the rest).

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Doug Flutie (SD) - Drew Brees has been awful and was benched in favor of Flutie this week. Doug completed 8 of 11 passes for 70 yards and also scrambled for 19 yards on 2 carries. He might be named the starter this week.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Rick Mirer (Oak) - Yes he is terrible, but will start in week 10. If you play in a 32 team league, he could be your answer.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) - Bennett was given eleven touches yesterday (8 carries for 43 yards and 3 receptions for 15 yards). It's only a matter of time before he is the team's workhorse again. He is among the fastest people in the NFL and showed that speed on multiple plays yesterday. He is all the way back.

RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) - He is running very strong for an old guy. He quietly had 108 rushing yards on 28 carries. Lamont Jordan was again a non-factor (6 carries for just 12 yards). It should be noted that Martin started slowly last season too and came on strong.

RB Ahman Green (GB) - Green had 189 total yards and a TD yesterday. That is just sick. He gives the Packers a lot of options and makes everyone on their offense better.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Rudi Johnson (Cin) - Corey Dillon can't seem to finish a game any more (sometimes he doesn't even start them) so Johnson will get some action each week.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Stacey Mack (Hou) - If Domanick Davis is unable to play, Mack will resume the starting RB job and turn out about 30 yards and a 1-yard TD. Even if Davis plays, Mack has produced more fantasy points since losing the starting job than he did as the starter.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Cory Schlesinger (Det) - While he's a non-factor carrying the ball, Schlesinger may be Detroit's best healthy receiver. If you're league awards points for receptions, Schlesinger will be a decent pickup. He caught 4 passes for 53 yards and a TD this week.

RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi) - He did not score the rushing TD, but did manage 92 rushing yards on 23 carries. Duce Staley had just 3 carries (one was the TD).

RB Marcel Shipp (Ari) - He totaled 165 yards from scrimmage against a decent Bengals defense. Why the Cardinals don't go ahead and name him their franchise RB is beyond reason. Expect Emmitt's injury to nag on for as long as Marcel continues to produce.

RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) - Thomas is once again playing well. After missing the last two games, Thomas returned to his role as a power running workhorse. He finished the game with 31 carries for 111 yards and 2 TDs. More amazing is that all of the other Chicago RBs combined had just 1 carry for 3 yards on Sunday.

WR Antonio Bryant (Dal) - Bryant looked much more involved in the offense yesterday. He finished with 5 catches for 52 yards.

WR Torry Holt (StL) - Another 200 yards makes Holt as appealing a WR as any in the league. The Rams offense is blistering right now.

WR Santana Moss (NYJ) - If he's on your roster, you simply must start him every week. We took criticism for ranking him at #7 this past week. We were wrong. He was the #1 WR this week. Pennington can get the ball much deeper and Moss is the recipient of those passes much like Coles was last season.

WR Steve Smith (Car) - We've said it before, but Smith is a WR stud. He caught almost half of the team's receiving yardage yesterday and scored their only TD.

WR Joe Horn (NO) - When people talk about toughness, why don't they ever mention Joe Horn? Forget the injury report. Yes his name will be on it as questionable, but don't discount him. He will be there on Sunday. Over the last three weeks, he has caught 18 passes for 246 yards and 3 TDs despite not being able to practice but a few times.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Joe Jurevicius (TB) - He will return this week and should be used near the goal line.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Javon Walker (GB) - Walker is quietly leading the Packers in receiving yardage, yards per reception, and TD catches.

TE Randy McMichael (Mia) - If the Dolphins offense could get a little more consistent, McMichael could be the #1 fantasy TE. As it is, he is a solid every-week starter.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE L.J. Smith (Phi) - He had six catches and neared 100 receiving yards. Smith has obviously surpassed Chad Lewis as the team's primary TE. If the Eagles offense is jump-started with this game, Smith could be an excellent fantasy option going forward.

TE Billy Miller (Hou) - He is playing well again after a slow start this season. He finished the game with 58 yards on 4 catches and scored a TD.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE Anthony Becht (NYJ) - Chad Pennington's ability to play action makes Becht a very good option. He could have a lot more productive games. He posted 44 yards on 4 catches and scored a TD.

Aberrations

WR Keyshawn Johnson (TB) - Johnson had a great day, but he'll likely follow it up with a stinker next week. Johnson is like that. And of course, there was no TD.

Downgrades

The entire Raiders offense - They are now down to Rick Mirer at QB. What's worse is they struggled against the Lions (although the WRs did catch a lot of balls). Also, the team (Rod Woodson in particular) has turned on head coach Bill Callahan.

QB Kurt Warner - His only chance to play would require a Marc Bulger injury. Warner's stock has never been lower.

QB Patrick Ramsey and the Fun-N-Gun - Despite a huge investment for an improved offensive line, the Redskins are not giving Ramsey enough time to throw the ball downfield. Some of that blame clearly falls on an offensive strategy that takes too long for the receivers to get open (longer routes). Regardless as to the why, Ramsey is getting crushed on every throw. Dallas blized often against the Fun-N-Gun with huge success. Look for every team playing the Redskins to do the same. Patrick Ramsey's value is rising only in the office dead pool.

QB Drew Brees (SD) - He's playing horribly right now and struggled mightily against the woeful Bears. Doug Flutie came in and gave the team a spark, but it was too little too late. We think a change could be in the works. How bad has Drew Brees been? He has thrown for just 313 yards over the last three games. Marc Bulger is averaging more than that per game in his last three starts.

QB Marques Tuiasosopo (Oak) - A sprained MCL will keep Tuiasosopo out for a little while, but his pre-injury performance was less than stellar any way.

RB Onterrio Smith (Min) - He looks to be the big loser in this RBBC. Michael Bennett will be the starter soon and we expect Moe Williams to back him up. The self proclaimed Steal of the Draft (SOD) might want to learn how to pick up the blitz better so he gets a few carries each week.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) - Who knows what is going on with this guy each week. There always seems to be something wrong with Dillon on Sunday. 7 carries for just 5 yards isn't going to warm many hearts. He looks like a complete bust to us.

RB Ricky Williams (Mia) - The TD is usually there, but he simply isn't producing enough total yards. He had just 36 yards on 13 carries this week. In the last three games, he has 199 yards on 63 carries (less than 3.2 ypc).

RB Jerome Bettis (Pit) - The bus needs new tires and a better engine. He had just 17 carries for 50 yards this week. He was easily outplayed by Amos Zereoue (7 carries for 32 yards and 3 catches for 18 yards). With the team out of playoff contention, we think they will switch to the future and bench the bus again.

WR Joey Galloway (Dal) - Terry Glenn and Antonio Bryant combined for 11 catches while Galloway hauled in a single reception. Galloway has been surpassed and is now option number three in the passing game.

WR Troy Brown (NE) - He was downgraded to doubtful with an undisclosed leg injury on Saturday after not even showing up on Friday's injury report. Something does not sound right here. He is downgraded until we know what is up.

WR Robert Ferguson (GB) - 0 catches this week. 1 catch for 25 yards last week. Javon Walker has outplayed him and we expect that to continue.

TE Doug Jolley (Oak) - He lost his starting job to rookie Teyo Johnson and now has Rick Mirer throwing him the ball. He did not catch a pass on Sunday. Only Rush Limbaugh has had worse news in a week.
