Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Daunte Culpepper (Min) - He may be losing, but 370 yards and four TDs are as good as it gets. The Minnesota defense is allowing over 450 yards a game over the last 3 contests forcing Daunte to throw often. Over the last three weeks, He has thrown for 813 yards (8 TDs) and ran for another 106 yards (1 TD).

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Jake Delhomme (Car) - There were a couple of times that Delhomme made the incorrect decision, but he is becoming a good QB. The game-winning drive was excellent. His schedule the last four weeks of the season is absolutely enticing.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Doug Flutie (Den) - We made light of his promotion in the Players in the News, but he was studly yesterday. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 248 yards and 2 TDs (with no interceptions). He also gained 18 yards and 2 TDs on 6 runs. Doug might be 41, but he is significantly more mobile than Drew Brees. Of course you probably missed his best game of the year, but we won't see Drew Brees anytime soon.

QB Trent Green (KC) - The Browns have been good against QBs this season, but Green looked excellent yesterday with 368 yards and three TDs. As teams pile up 8 in the box to stop/slow Priest Holmes, Green is making team's pay for single covering Morton and Kennison. He's an every week starter.

QB Brad Johnson (TB) - He wasn't bad yesterday, but his remaining schedule looks very nice. He also has all of his receivers back.

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) - The Steelers offense is beginning to show some life. Maddox will be even better if Plaxico Burress' play improves.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) - He's on his way back in week eleven. It may be preposterous to most of you, but there are some leagues where he could be sitting in free agency.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) - He had another very efficient day throwing for 269 yards and 2 TDs with no interceptions. His ability to play action allows him to connect on deeper pass routes. He is becoming a must start each week.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Rick Mirer (Oak) - Yes he is still real bad, but he goes against the Vikings in week 11. In larger leagues, that is enough to catapult him for a week into near Pro-Bowl status.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Rudi Johnson (Cin) - He was phenomenal yesterday. The wild-card here is Corey Dillon. Most elite players would be motivated to return if their back-up turned in 182 yards and a pair of TDs. However, Johnson was given 43 carries (which is a Bengals record). Dillon is the type that could be personally offended over Johnson being given so many rushes and wonder why the team never gave him the ball that often. Dillon may sulk for weeks over this "slight".

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) - All he needs is for the passing game to be at least a bit of threat. With Doug Flutie at the helm, he gets that. LaDainian can break a big run on any given play. He is as good as they get at RB.

RB Moe Williams (Min) - Michael Bennett was supposed to get a bigger role yesterday, but Williams totaled 171 yards and a pair of TDs (with 11 receptions). The big loser in all of this is Onterrio Smith who has been relegated to special teams play for the last two weeks.

RB Fred Taylor (Jac) - Not only he has did rack up 158 yards yesterday, but he remained as the primary back in short yardage chances near the goal line. The result was 2 TDs. He has been extremely durable as of late playing all 9 games this season and all 16 last year.

RB Warrick Dunn (Atl) - Gaining 178 yards on 25 carries is very impressive indeed. He also scored a TD with one long run. He gets the upgrade because the Atlanta passing game is plain awful. Until Vick returns, this team is going to attempt to run the ball often.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Tyrone Wheatley (Oak) - He gained 75 yards on 23 carries and added another 39 yards on 3 receptions in relief of the injured Charlie Garner.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Rock Cartwright (Was) - He gained 81 yards on 13 carries outperforming Trung Candidate by a wide margin. He could see more time in the coming weeks in this RBBC.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Adrian Murrell (Dal) - He managed 76 yards on 16 carries including the game clinching run at the end of the game for a key first down. Troy Hambrick is regressing and gained only 33 yards on 13 carries yesterday. Murrell, at worst will be part of the RBBC. At best he could supplant Hambrick as the starter.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Chris Brown (Ten) - He is officially in the RBBC mix in Tennessee. He had 46 yards on 12 carries. Eddie George is still the primary runner and will likely score the TDs, but Chris Brown will see action every week.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Larry Johnson (KC) - He officially backs up Priest Holmes now. He has passed Derrick Blaylock on the depth charts.

WR Anquan Boldin (Ari) - He's not going to match his opening day numbers, but Boldin continues to post solid stats almost every game. He is clearly the number receiving option in Arizona.

WR Keenan McCardell (TB) - His TD catch yesterday was a thing of beauty. He has become a clutch target of Brad Johnson. Tampa Bay's schedule is very enticing going forward too.

WR Santana Moss (NYJ) - He just looks good every week. Chad Pennington has a strong arm and Moss is the guy that can get deep.

WR Steve Smith (Car) - He has clearly emerged as the #1 WR in Carolina. He has a connection with QB Delhomme that should not be under-estimated. It seems virtually every big passing play, he is the primary receiver.

WR David Boston (SD) - He gets the upgrade because Flutie is able to scramble around and make things happen in this offense. Watching some of this game yesterday, we are convinced that no one can jam him at the line of scrimmage. He is open on a lot of the plays intended for him with his combination of speed and strength.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Scotty Anderson (Det) - He is emerging as the #1 WR while Charles Rogers is out. He caught 5 passes for 77 yards yesterday.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE Antonia Gates (SD) - He had his break-through game with 3 catches for 55 yards and a score. He just looks like a tight end to us while punishing tacklers after the catch. With the team's record, he could see a lot more playing time towards the end of the season.

TE Jim Kleinsasser (Min) - The Vikings promised that he would be more involved in the offense and that prognostication held true. He had 5 catches for 61 yards.

Aberrations

WR Rod Gardner (Was) - After a few weeks of being almost non-existent, Gardner threw and caught a TD yesterday as Washington's offense found its groove. It should be noted that they did this against a Seahawks team that has a terrible pass rush. Every team that can will blitz Washington a lot and this will effect Gardner's play going forward.

WR Ricky Proehl (Car) - He was huge yesterday as the Panthers took to the air to defeat the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay was focused against DeShaun Foster and the running game. However, this is still a running team, and there is not room for three WRs to excel. Actually, there probably isn't room for two quality WRs (and Steve Smith is easily the top pass-catcher here).

WR Chris Doering (Pit) - He had 62 yards and a score on two receptions. He is option number 4 at best in the passing game.

WR Isaac Bruce (Stl) - He managed just 13 yards on two catches as the Ravens defense completely shut down the Rams. Do not look for many other teams to be able to copy this strategy as Baltimore has a very good defense.

WR Peter Warrick (Cin) - He only had two catches yesterday while the Bengals fed Rudi Johnson 43 times. Warrick will be back.

TE Donald Lee (Mia) - He had 27 yards and a TD. Don't expect the trend to continue.

Downgrades

QB Kyle Boller (Bal) - He did not play the second half after suffering a sprained knee. His status is not fully known, but we're sure he'll return as the starter when healthy as Chris Redman was about as awful as possible.

QB Drew Brees (SD) - Take a seat son. Doug Flutie is 41 and is not the long-term answer, but neither is Drew Brees. Look for the Chargers to look to the draft or the free agent market for a QB this offseason.

QB Kerry Collins (NYG) - Yesterday was supposed to be the easiest game left on his schedule. The team looks to be in complete disarray and is making a lot of mental errors. Losing Jeremy Shockey for the rest of the season will not help this passing attack.

QB Kurt Kittner (Atl) - He completed 9 of 23 pass attempts for 65 yards for less than 3 yards per attempt. So if he completed all 3 of those attempts in a series, the team would still have to punt. It does not get worse than this.

QB Brian Griese (Mia) - What a horrible performance yesterday. It is becoming apparent that Jay Fiedler will return when healthy. After a great first game, Griese has put up two stinkers in a row. Plus the Dolphins are losing with Griese.

QB Peyton Manning (Ind) - This is more of a caution than a downgrade. With Marvin Harrison out for three quarters, Manning passed for plenty of yards but had no TDs in the second half. If Harrison misses a game or two, Manning could struggle mightily. Another downside is the schedule isn't too sweet over the next few weeks.

QB Chris Redman (Bal) - It's not common for a back-up QB to be downgraded when the starter is injured, but Redman was horrid yesterday. In limited time he had 2 interceptions, a fumble and was sacked 4 times.

RB Tiki Barber (NYG) - He continues to run well, but has hurt his team plenty with costly fumbles. He had two more fumbles yesterday. He leads all running backs over the last two years in fumbling the ball. This can not be a good thing.

RB Eddie George (Ten) - He is officially in a RBBC now with Chris Brown playing well.

RB DeShaun Foster (Car) - He certainly has the break-away speed, but he will return to the background when Stephen Davis returns. He squandered his first start with just 56 rushing yards on 22 carries.

RB Troy Hambrick (Dal) - If Adrian Murrell continues to grab about half of the carries, Hambrick will be practically worthless here.

RBs Shawn Bryson & Olandis Gary - This not-so-dynamic duo was out-gained by Reggie Swinton (who had nine yards on one carry). Ouch.

RB Charlie Garner (Oak) - He left yesterday's game with a strained back.

RB Trung Canidate (Was) - He was not completely healthy, but was easily outplayed by FB Rock Cartwright. That cannot bode well for his future role on the team.

RB Ricky Williams (Mia) - Teams are loading up with people in the box and it has been effective at stopping Ricky Williams. Until the Dolphins can beat some people with the pass, Ricky will not have any lanes to run in.

FB Tony Richardson (KC) - He broke his hand yesterday and will miss 1-4 weeks. At the very least, Richardson's ability to catch passes will certainly be effected with a cast on his hand.

WR Plaxico Burress (Pit) - One catch for six yards is horrid. He is not involved in the offense at all.

WR Kevin Johnson (Cle) - The Browns use three receivers often, but that does not help when you are receiver number 4. This is where Kevin Johnson now sits on the depth chart. He had 1 catch for just 3 yards this week.

WR Joe Jurevicious (TB) - He did not get involved in the offense at all this week.

WR Marvin Harrison (Ind) - His status is not fully known, but Harrison left yesterday's game with a strained hamstring.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) - He will miss 6-8 weeks with a sprained knee which means he is effectively lost for the season. The Giants will likely place him on IR to free up a roster spot.

Def Minnesota Vikings - If your league penalizes for yards and points allowed, you need to get away from this defense as quickly as possible. They have allowed 1,359 yards and 101 points over the last three weeks. That is worse than the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys combined over the same period. Mike Tice commented in the press conference that there would be no personnel changes to the defense and that he thought the unit was close to putting it all together.
