Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Jake Delhomme (Car) - Delhomme is playing with a lot of confidence right now and is producing quality numbers. Even better….Delhomme has an excellent schedule down the stretch.

QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) - He had his breakout game on Sunday throwing for 392 yards and 3 TDs. He threw no interceptions and did not fumble. Tim Couch's value has never been lower. It is doubtful that Holcomb will be this hot again, but the team seemed energized after they cut Kevin Johnson.

QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) - He is quietly gaining confidence as the team continues to win. He had no rushing yards yesterday, but did throw for 314 yards and 2 TDs. He is starting to find his groove again in this offense.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) - In his last three games, he has 9 TDs against just 2 INTs for a QB rating of 118.8.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) looked good in his return with 253 passing yards and 3 TDs. He also ran for 14 yards on 2 attempts.

RB Deuce McAllister (NO) - He combined for 237 yards and 2 TDs on 37 touches. The rushing yardage is expected. His 9 receptions were a huge bonus. He defines the term workhorse.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Richie Anderson (Dal) - If you receive points for receptions, Anderson is likely the top RB in Dallas. He caught 8 passes for 85 yards yesterday.

RB Najeh Davenport (GB) - If Ahman Green is hobbled with the ankle sprain, Davenport would immediately be an excellent fantasy RB.

RB Warrick Dunn (Atl) - With two straight huge rushing days, Dunn looks entrenched as the team's RB.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) - The 160 total yards and three TDs were great, but there was something even more promising about yesterday's game. Backup RBs Dominic Rhodes and Ricky Williams combined for one touch of the football while James had 36 carries and 6 receptions. If he continues to get all of the looks, James will be huge over the remainder of the season.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Thomas Jones (TB) - Jones should likely be listed under the 'Aberrations' section, but the Buccaneers are really struggling right now so a change could be made at RB.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Sammy Morris (Buf) - With Travis Henry likely out for the season, Morris becomes an instant starter. This late in the year, a starting RB on the waiver wire is gold.

RB Brian Westbrook (Phi) - He had three TDs yesterday and is heavily involved in the passing game. In a very crowded backfield, only Westbrook has the potential to post awesome numbers. The Eagles will likely give him more touches each week as Duce Staley does not figure to be part of the puzzle in 2004.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Tyrone Wheatley (Oak) - Wheatley was supposed to get a 'few' more carries than Zack Crockett and Justin Fargas. Thirty-two carries later and Wheatley looks like a workhorse. Of course, when Charlie Garner returns the carries will be split a bit more, but Wheatley has shown he deserves a good deal of looks in this offense.

RB Moe Williams (Min) - The team continues to say Michael Bennett is the starter, but the stats tell a different story. He had 10 rushes and 8 receptions yesterday. Michael Bennett had 5 rushes and 2 receptions.

RB Rudi Johnson (Cin) - He outperformed Dillon again. He also had 22 carries to Dillon's 6. The Bengals have an improving offensive line and the Bengals will likely unload Dillon in the off-season as he requested earlier this year.

RB James Jackson (Cle) - William Green has two more games to miss due to his drug suspension. Jackson only managed 45 rushing yards, but did score twice.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) - He had 20 carries and caught 3 passes. Arlen Harris and Lamar Gordon combined for 2 carries for 10 yards.

WR Kevin Johnson (Jac) - He is with a team that seems to be excited about having him. That alone is worth a great deal.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR David Tyree (NYG) - Who? Exactly. But he had 5 catches for 106 yards yesterday. He could have a larger role with Shockey out for at least a few more games.

WR Peter Warrick (Cin) - Team's are forced to cover Chad Johnson deep which gives Warrick lots of room to maneuver. He is having an excellent season.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Az-Zahir Hakim (Det) - Someone has to catch the ball. WR Scotty Anderson is lost for the season with a broken ankle.

TE Dallas Clark (Ind) - Clark hung a hundred yesterday with Pollard on the bench. Remember that Pollard will miss at least another game.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE Boo Williams (NO) - Williams is a good receiver and has an opportunity to excel with Ernie Conwell hobbled.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE Jim Kleinsasser (Min) - He caught another 7 passes for 67 yards. He will not likely be on the waiver wire much longer.

TE Shannon Sharpe (Den) - He caught three TDs yesterday to become the NFL's all-time TD scorer at TE. He definitely is glad he has Plummer back.

Aberrations

QB Marc Bulger (StL) - Bulger has struggled in recent weeks, but there is a surprise supporter in his corner. Kurt Warner absolutely believes Bulger is the team's best option at QB. In the first half yesterday, head coach Mike Martz asked Warner if he was ready to go in. Warner said he was but thought Bulger should stay in the game. Bulger then threw a pair of second half TDs.

The entire Cleveland passing game - Kelly Holcomb, Andre Davis, and Quincy Morgan tore up the Cardinals yesterday, but that was just a case of everything coming together for a team. Although Davis and Morgan should have more opportunities with Kevin Johnson gone, the passing game will come back to Earth next week when Pittsburgh comes to town.

WR Muhsin Muhammad (Car) - After weeks of very little production, Muhammad grabbed nine balls for 189 yards yesterday. It is not likely to continue. Steve Smith is still the top WR on the team.

Starting WRs Joe Horn and Donte Stallworth (NO) combined for 26 yards on 4 receptions yesterday. Stallworth reinjured his hamstring. Horn was not used as McAllister was having a career day.

Downgrades

QB Doug Flutie (SD) - After an awesome debut, Flutie flaked out with a mere 70 passing yards against the Broncos. He completed just 9 of 25 pass attempts with 1 TD and 1 INT.

QB Kurt Kittner (Atl) - Why is he starting? We don't remember Doug Johnson being this bad. Over his last three games, he has a QB rating of 36.6.

QB Drew Bledsoe (Buf) - In his last two games he has combined for 288 yards and 0 TDs. During these two games he is averaging just 4.8 yards per attempt. He was awful against one of the worst pass defenses this year (Houston) this week.

QB Brett Favre (GB) - He had just 92 passing yards yesterday. His thumb is still bothering him and it looks obvious that the team will try and run as much as possible to help it heal.

QB Anthony Wright (Bal) - One game in and we clearly see that he is not the answer to the hurt Kyle Boller. He completed 14 of 25 for 112 yards and 2 interceptions.

RB Chris Brown (Ten) - There is been much speculation that Brown would soon take over for Eddie George. In a close game yesterday, Brown had three carries compared to George's 20. Even though he can't seem to break the 4 ypc average, this is still Eddie George's backfield.

RB T.J. Duckett (Atl) - Dunn is exploding and Duckett looks like an afterthought.

RB Ahman Green (GB) - He had yet another 100-yard game, but he also tweaked an ankle. Sprained ankles can sometimes drag down a RB so this injury is definitely something that needs to be watched closely.

RB Arlen Harris (StL) - With Lamar Gordon back, Harris is no longer the backup RB.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) - Henry played the second half with a broken fibula. It is doubtful that he'll continue to play with such an injury.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) - His stock could not be much lower. He is being outplayed badly by Rudi Johnson. The coaches are saying RBBC, but I am not sure we see it that way. The team is going to want to see if they can let Dillon go in the offseason.

RB Kevin Faulk (NE) - 8 carries for 11 yards. Ouch. Antowain Smith played much better and this now looks like a RBBC again.

RB Trung Canidate (Was) - With just 18 yards on 10 carries, he is not the answer.

RB Michael Pittman (TB) - Tampa Bay has been terrible lately, and Pittman was drastically outplayed by Thomas Jones. At best, Pittman will share time. At worst, Jones will be the new starter.

WR Scotty Anderson (Det) - He was placed on IR with an injured ankle.

WR Donald Driver (GB) - Deep passes are not in the Green Bay gameplan with Favre's hand. Donald Driver's stats are taking the hit.

TE Ernie Conwell (NO) - Conwell injured his ankle and could be lost for the season.
