Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Jake Delhomme (Car) - After a horrendous start with Rodney Peete under center, the Panthers turned to Delhomme. He directed a 17-point comeback win (the largest in Carolina history) and will start this week against the Buccaneers. Hint: That means you might want to pick him up but NOT start him just yet.

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) - Against what was suppose to be a tough Baltimore defense, Tommy Maddox had what seemed like all day to throw the ball. Completng 21 of 29 passes for 260 yards and 3 TDs (without any interceptions), Tommy jumped way up the QB rankings. Look for the Steelers to throw a lot in their next two contests against Kansas City and Cincinnati.

*** Waiver Wire - QB Jeff Blake (Ari) - Against a pourous Detroit secondary, Jeff Blake had a huge day putting up 363 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. He likely won't face this bad of a defense every week, but the Cradinals could easily be playing from behind in virtually all contests. This makes Blake a great value at quarterback.

*** Waiver Wire - QB Mark Brunell (Jac) - Left for dead before the season started as the Jaguars look to rebuild, Mark played a near-perfect game. He finished the game 23 for 27 for 272 yards and 2 TDs and likely put talks of getting Leftwich in on the back burner. Unfortunately, the Jaguars lost this game despite the great play of Brunell.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) - The Detroit secondary is likely the league's worst. Anquan Boldin showed us that all day long. This coupled with the unsettled running back situation in Detroit should have the Lions throwing often. Harrington only thrw for 195 yards on 30 attempts, but did manage a career best 4 TDs.

QB Marc Bulger (StL) - I am not sure a QB could play worse that Kurt Warner did yesterday. Despite an improved offensive line, Warner held on to the ball way too long and proceeded to fumble virtually every time he was tackled. Head Coach Mike Martz claimed Warner suffered a concussion, but it was obvious to me that Martz is not sure about Warner's confidence right now at all. Look for Marc Bulger to start next week and possibly longer.

*** Waiver Wire - RB Kevin Faulk (NE) - He easily outperformed Antowain Smith in the debacle that was this week's game. Of course the Patriots will not be shut out every week, so Faulk will have some opportunities to produce at least decent numbers.

RB Olandis Gary (Det) - He barely knows how to get to the stadium, but Gary was given more carries than any other Lion. He should continue to get more reps each week after Shawn Bryson managed just 8 yards on 5 carries and was a non-factor in the running game.

RB Garrison Hearst (SF) - Kevan Barlow did manage four more carries than Hearst, but the old guy is still a big part of this offense. He also was in on short yardage plays and looks to have the inside track for goal-line carries. It looks like RBBC will continue for some time in San Francisco.

RB Moe Williams (Min) - The Vikings gave him the ball 22 times yesterday. This compared to 4 carries for the hobbled Doug Chapman and 0 carries for rookie Onterrio Smith. Moe is not the long-term answer here, but Onterrio Smith looks like he may be phased in very slowly this season. The fact that the Vikings also look much improved defensely makes them much more competitive which also could favor a slow approach with the rookie. These factors all upgrade Moe Williams.

*** Waiver Wire - RB Ladell Betts (Was) - Ladell is the more powerful runner on the Redskins. He looks like a RB while Trung Canidate looks like the skinny kid on the playground. The Offensive line of the Redskins looked very solid (against a soft NY jets front) which allowed Betts to run North/South easily. There will be games where the Redskins use Canidate more, but Betts looks like he will be the preferred option in games they are winning and in goal line situations.

*** Waiver Wire - RB Lamont Jordan (NYJ) - Lamont was brought in to punch in the short TD against the Redskins. This will give him fair value in TD only leagues and could be available on your waiver wire.

*** Waiver Wire - WR Anquan Boldin (Ari) - His 217 receiving yards are only the most by anyone in their first NFL game. Of course, the bad news here is that he's not going to be lining up against the Lions every week and (more importantly) he won't sneak up on anyone else this year. Still, coming from no where, he has to warrant a huge upgrade. Watching him play, he reminds us of a young Terrell Owens and Blake was looking for him all day. He is not blazing fast, but is strong after the catch and also looked like he was hard to jam off the line. Expect him to emerge as the #1 WR in Arizona this season.

Chris Chambers (Mia) - There was talk in the preseason that Derrius Thompson could emerge as the #1 WR in Miami. We think Chambers secured his #1 spot in the starting lineup with a huge week (7 catches for 118 yards and 2 TDs) this week.

WR Andre Johnson (Hou) - Corey Bradford grabbed the long TD, but Johnson will be the guy that finishes the year with the most catches. He grabbed six in his debut. No other receiver had more than three. He looked extremely polished for a rookie and made some great catches and runs after the catch.

WR Derrick Mason (Ten) - Catching 10 balls (and a TD) opening week will get you on this list. McNair looked to him on every important pass. He is a big part of this Tennessee offense.

WR Charles Rogers (Det) - Don't expect the 2 touchdown efforts to become commonplace, but he is definitely Detroit's guy near the endzone.

*** Waiver Wire - WR Javon Walker (GB) - He didn't actually do much to be listed here, but is the only viable healthy WR on the roster with Donald Driver and Robert Ferguson both hobbled. With Green Bay playing Detroit and Arizona the next two weeks, he is definitely someone you will want on your roster.

*** Waiver Wire - WR Quentin McCord (Atl) - He caught just two passes for 14 yards, but should be in the starting lineup at WR next week due to the injury of Brian Finneran.

TE Alge Crumpler (Atl) - 5 catches for 94 yards and a 1 TD is great production for a tight end. Crumpler runs extremely well after the catch so is very capable of having big weeks like this from time to time. His value appears to be higher with Doug Johnson at QB as Vick could just run if he got in trouble. Crumpler will also benefit with the loss of Finneran for the next month.

TE Freddie Jone (Ari) - We have been saying that Jones would have a bigger role in the offense and it showed in Week 1. With questionable receivers, Freddie Jones should get a lot of looks on this team this year.

*** Waiver Wire - PK Aaron Elling (Min) - The kid looked great while booting a trio of FGs (the longest was 46 yards). The big news is that he missed zero. The bigger news is this offense looks very good which should yield Elling many opportunities. Elling is probably still sitting on the waiver wire in most leagues. Grab him now.

DT Buffalo Bills (Buf) - The opponent may have had something to do with it, but this squad looks great this year. They kept Tom Brady and the rest of the New England offense off balance all game long. The late addition of Lawyer Milloy could be the edge they needed to turn the corner and be a dominate fantasy unit this season.

Aberrations

QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) - No, he definitely did not impress in opening week. However, consider that he wasn't highly thought of before, and you'll realize there isn't much room for him to be downgraded. Surely he (and the entire team) won't throw up something that ugly again. He's still a mediocre back-up QB. Of course if he looks horrible again soon, Rex Grossman could take over as the team scraps this season and points to the future.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) - Starting the season with a total of 55 yards is not a quality debut, but the team simply didn't call his number enough (only 16 touches in 68 plays). That ratio will definitely increase in the coming weeks.

RB Aveion Cason (Dal) - Yes, that was a big 63-yard TD, but Cason is not a big part of the Dallas ground attack.

Downgrades

QB Brett Favre (GB) - Not only did he look terrible at home, but his WRs are dropping like flies. Driver left with a scary neck injury (which doesn't appear to be too serious). Robert Ferguson left a few plays later injuries to his right knee and ankle. Before that, Karsten Bailey suffered a pulled hamstring.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) - Sure, his team won easily, but it wasn't because of Plummer. Consider he completed only 40% of his passes, tossed three INTs, totaled only 115 yards passing, and had zero TDs. What makes less sense is he compiled these numbers while blowing out the Bengals. The coach defended him this week, but it is easy to do that when your team wins big. Plummer won't be so lucky should he continue to struggle.

QB Kurt Warner (StL) - The indecisiveness was glaring against the Giants particularly on the endzone sack/fumble play that resulted in a New York TD. Of course the 342 passing yards look great, but he had to throw a career high 54 passes to get them. Add in the concussion (status uncertain) and you get the feeling that Warner will need a miracle to start all 16 games this season.

QB Vinny Testaverde (NYJ) - 24 pass attempts for 105 yards. Ouch. This also affects the value of Curtis Conway.

Kyle Boller (Bal) - Nobody expected a great performance, but he looked like a deer in the headlights against a good Pittsburgh defensive unit. He finished with just 152 yards on 43 pass attempts. Welcome to real defensive schemes rookie.

Tom Brady (NE) - 4 interceptions. Just 123 yards on 29 attempts. Brady was frustrated all day. He will likely rebound from this game, but his stock is very low at this moment.

RB T.J. Duckett (Atl) - He's here because his role is clearly not matching his status on draft boards this year. His five touches were two less than fullback Justin Griffith.

RB Larry Johnson (KC) - If you were expecting Johnson to be Holmes' primary back-up and get several looks a game, here are two reasons to check that: 1) Holmes is ready to be a workhorse again (17 first-half touches), and 2) Johnson isn't ready for action and didn't even dress for the game.

RB Antowain Smith (NE) - His pathetic opening performance (six runs for seven yards) may be typical for the year. He was easily outperformed by Kevin Faulk's 6.2 ypc, and Larry Centers even offered better production.

RB Onterrio Smith (Min) - 0 carries. Even a limping Doug Chapman got 4 carries. Looks like Mike Tice is going to bring along Smith much slower this season.

RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) - He was lifted at the goal line for Lamont Jordan. If this continues all year, Martin's value falls considerably.

RB Jerome Bettis (Pit) - Despite an easy win, Jerome managed just 4 carries. The Zereoue era has begun.

WR Curtis Conway (NYJ) - He looked lost in the offense. It did not help that Testaverde also did not look sharp either. He will stay on this list until we see more out of him.

WR Brian Finneran (Atl) - He will be out for at least a month and maybe six weeks after breaking two bones in his left hand.

WR Donald Driver & WR Robert Ferguson (GB) - Driver will likely miss this week with his neck injury while Ferguson is battling ankle and knee woes.

WR Marc Boerigter (KC) - The game I saw featured Johnnie Morton, Eddie Kennison and Dante Hall as the WRs. Boerigter intrigued all with his high TDs to pass attempts last season, but he is not on the field for enough plays to be a viable fantasy option yet.

WR Joe Horn (NO) - This is more of a precautionary listing for Horn. He appeared to have a slight limp at times between plays. Footballguys.com has since learned that Horn severely twisted his left knee in warm-ups and will undergo and MRI on it today.

WR Jerry Porter (Oak) - Starting the season with one catch for six yards is normally enough to get you on this list, but the reason he's here is he doesn't appear to be fully healthy. He wasn't even able to finish the game Sunday night as his strained abs were giving him problems.

TE Tony Gonzalez (KC) - Priest Holmes is back and he is going to once again cut into Tony's numbers.

PK Joe Nedney (Ten) - He suffered an MCL injury in his right knee. Look for the Titans to bring in someone new to kick.

DT Miami Dolphins (Mia) - The usually fearsome group got popped in the mouth by the lowly Texans. They did not sack David Carr. They did not force a turnover. That's significantly below the expectations out of the preseason.
