Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) - The bulging disk is still there and that lowered his value considerably on draft day for msot people. But after two weeks, he sits atop the quarterback board with 451 passing yards, 4 passing TDs, 50 rushing yards and a rushing TD.

QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) - Here is a player that never seems to get any love. After two weeks he has 4 passing TDs and a rush score. You could do much worse than playing Fiedler in a pinch.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) - The Jaguars are now 0-2 and are not a good football team. It is simply a matter of time before they turn the team over to their QB of the future, Byron Leftwich. Late in week 2's game, Byron went 7 for 8 for 92 yards and a TD. Admittedly it was against the Bills' 2nd teamers, but all the fans saw was that this kid looked sharp.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** QB Steve Beuerlein (Den) hasn't been named Denver's starter for week three, but if Plummer can't go with his shoulder Beuerlein instantly becomes a viable fantasy QB. At the very least, all of the Jake Plummer owners should grab Beuerlein.

QB Drew Bledsoe (Buf) is having his 2nd straight outstanding start for the Bills. Ride him for a while, but strongly consider dealing him away before he slumps in the chill of the Buffalo winter.

QB Marc Bulger (StL) had a good stat line (nearly perfect in the 2nd half of the game), but more importantly, he won. The players wanted him to start the last game. Although it has not been announced yet, We believe Bulger will be the starter in week 3 and likely beyond.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** QB Tim Couch (Cle) - On pure speculation, we believe that Tim Couch will get a shot with the Browns soon. Kelly Holcomb has looked awful (see downgrades) and as much as the fans wanted Holcomb, we believe they will be shouting for Couch to lead the team soon.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) posted excellent numbers against a depleted Falcons secondary. With a pair of very good WRs (Coles and Gardner), Ramsey has good to great potential every week. The Fun-N-Gun has arrived.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** RB Mike Anderson (Den) clearly demonstrated he can run well behind the Denver offensive line should Portis miss any time (like he did in the second half of the game this week). Mike carried the ball 16 times for 65 yards and a TD and also picked up another 6 receiving yards.

RB Stephen Davis (Car) was the man for Carolina last week. They fed him the ball 33 times, and he produced 142 big yards. Doing that against the Buccaneers defense makes it even more impressive. He leads all backs with 55 attempts this year. He has yet to score a TD, but those will come soon as the passing offense gets more proficient.

RB T.J. Duckett (Atl) has only 12 carries (for 56 yards) in two games, but he has scored two TDs. He is getting the short yardage and goal line carries.

RB Ahman Green (GB) is playing very well to start this season. He also has Arizona and Chicago up next on the schedule so his value will likely be even higher in a few weeks.

RB Priest Holmes (KC) already has five TDs in this short season.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) not only looks back to normal, but the Colts are feeding him the ball. He had 30 carries for 120 yards and a TD as Indianapolis easily beat the Titans.

RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) has 295 reasons to be on this list. Watching the highlights of his runs and his ability to cut with the elusive backs yet still have the power of the power backs leads me to believe he is in for a very special season.

RB Moe Williams (Min) had his second straight productive outing and scored from one yard out. There are still a few questions with Onterrio Smith having some quality runs and Michael Bennett targeting a mid-season return. However, you could do far worse than ride the Williams train for as long as it's on the tracks.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** WR Antonio Freeman (GB) led the team in receptions (four) in week two. That was more than the number of practice days he had with Favre and the team before Sunday's game. With a full week of practice (and with Arizona as the opponent), he could be very good this week.

WR Darrell Jackson (Sea) put on a show while Koren Robinson sat the bench. However, this is only a slight up tick for Jackson as Robinson will be back next week. Your best bet may to be to unload Jackson in a trade as his value may never be higher.

WR Laveranues Coles (Was) - All of the hype on receivers taking two years to learn a new system does not seem to apply to Laveranues Coles. After 2 weeks, he has 16 catches for 286 yards and 1 TD.

WR Santana Moss (NYJ) - With 5 catches for 142 yards and a TD, he catapults up the receiver list. Although he will not have this type of production every week, we believe the Jets' inability to run (see Curtis Martin downgrade) raises the value of Santa Moss significantly.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** WR Keenan McCardell (TB) is here due to the injury to Joe Jurivicius. If you were watching the game, you saw Jurivicius' knee bend to the right and will be out for at least a month. Karl Williams will move into the #3 WR role, but McCardell will certainly be given more targets with Jurivicius gone (as evidenced by the game-tying TD with no time left).

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** WR Eric Parker (SD) is here for two reasons: 1) Caldwell will be out for a couple months with a wrist dislocation, and 2) Parker is playing well and has put up some quality stats in two weeks.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** WR Peter Warrick (Cin) may finally start to live up to his potential this year. With Chad Johnson as the primary target, Warrick could have room to do some damage. Warrick caught 8 passes for 109 yards and a score this week.

TE Alge Crumpler (Atl) - After two weeks, he sits atop the TE list with 9 catches for 148 yards and 2 TDs. With Brian Finneran out and Peerless Price struggling against double coverage, Crumpler looks headed for a huge year.

TE Christian Fauria (NE) looks to be a goal line monster again for the Patriots. His three catches in week two translated into two TDs.

***** WAIVER WIRE ***** TE Jim Kleinsasser (Min) had a pair of TD catches last night. Obviously, he won't score every week, but with opposing defenses centered on Randy Moss, Kleinsasser should find some open areas around the goal line.

PK Mike Vanderjagt (Ind) - Talk of cutting him before the season now seems a distant memory. He has been perfect on all FG and extra point attempts this season. He has been a big reason the Colts are 2-0 this season.

DT Green Bay Packers (GB) have turned in one poor effort (week one against the Vikings) and one good effort (week two against the Lions). We think the opponent may have just a bit to do with that. They travel to Arizona in week three so we expect another good performance.

DT Kansas City Chiefs (KC) scored two return TDs and held a very good Steelers offense to one TD drive. With such a powerful offense behind them, this unit can afford to take chances which will likely lead to similar results the rest of the way.

ST Carolina Panthers (Car) blocked two FGs and the potential game-winning PAT. Amazing.

Aberrations

WR Koren Robinson (Sea) does not appear in the box score because he was sitting on the sidelines for violating the team rules. He was supposed to only sit out the first half, but when playing the Cardinals a head coach can afford to make a bigger example. Mike Holmgren knows he'll need Robinson against the Rams so expect the star WR to play in week three.

Downgrades

QB Mark Brunell (Jac) has played well, but his team just isn't very good. The Jaguars have already said that Brunell is gone next year. Look for the transition to Byron leftwich to start very soon.

QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) is showing terrible form in his throwing mechanics. This is bad news for fantasy owners, because this may not get corrected immediately. He is capable of rushing for yardage which makes him a tough player to bench. But after two weeks, he sits as the 23rd best QB and has completed just 37 of 82 pass attempts. He has yet to score a TD.

QB Steve McNair (Ten) dislocated his right ring finger in the 2nd quarter. He did return, but he was not effective. There is no clear word on his status for this week (knowing McNair's history he'll likely be under center), but a dislocated finger on your throwing hand is never good news.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) had a very productive first half going before he went out of the game with a shoulder separation. His status is not fully known at this time, but a shoulder separation is definitely not good for a QB.

QB Rich Gannon (Oak) faced what should have been a very good matchp against the Bengals. He responded by completing just 13 of 28 passes for 103 yards and 0 TDs. This team all of a sudden looks very old. Jerry Porter is out. Jerry Rice and Tim Brown are struggling to get open. And Gannon is not ususal sharp throwing self.

QB Kurt Warner (StL) - Stick a fork in him. He is done. The team has lost confidence in the two time MVP and were the reason that Bulger started this week. Bulger responded with a productive game and the Rams won. He gets another start. Bulger goes against Seattle and then the Cardinals next. He likely needs to win only 1 of those 2 games to be the starter the rest of the way. We like his chances.

QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) - After two weeks, Holcomb sits in 31st place among QBs with just 329 yards, 1 passing TD and 4 interceptions. He is killing the offense and is likely on a very short leash (See Tim Couch upgrade).

RB Najeh Davenport (GB) fumbled twice on eight carries against the Lions. That's not a good way to increase your touches.

RB Eddie George (Ten) simply looks mediocre. If McNair is ineffective with the finger injury, George will have even less room to roam.

RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) - The jets simply can not run the ball and it shows. Maybe it is the OL or maybe it is Martin and Jordan, but the fact remains that the jets can not run the ball. Curtis Martin has just 80 yards on 25 carries with 0 TDs. Additionally, he has lost 9 yards on 4 catches as the screen pass has also been ineffective.

RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) - After two weeks, he has 16 rushes for 68 yards and 0 TDs. Although no one has done better, Thomas is not getting enough touches as the Bears abandon the run game early trying to catch up.

RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi) - Remember the talk about him possibly being the starter in Philadelphia this season? After two games, he has 1 carry for 0 yards. Duce Staley has been ineffective too though so this could be the time to get him super cheap. His value is clearly at a season low.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) - Yes he is possibly the most talented back in football. But when your defense is so bad that you are always playing catchup, a star back does not get to shine. Just ask Corey Dillon. He can tell you. After two weeks, LT only has 29 rush attempts. Compare that to league leader Stephen Davis who has 55 at this point.

WR Reche Caldwell (SD) has dislocated his wrist and will be out for about 2 months.

WR Joe Jurivicius (TB) has a knee injury and will be out for at least a month.

WR Marc Boerigter (KC) - We never liked him this year to start with. But his 8 TDs last year had some people loving him. Two weeks into the season and he has 1 catch for 25 yards and 0 TDs.

WR Derrius Thompson (Mia) was getting lots of press in training camp that he might be the best receiver in Miami this season. Despite Jay Fiedler setting the league on fire after two weeks, Derrius Thompson has managed just 1 catch for 24 yards while Chris Chambers has caught 11 for 209 yards and 2 TDs.

WR Quincy Morgan (Cle) has just 3 catches for 32 yards and is not living up to the hype that surounds him.

WR Peerless Price (Atl) has not been effective against the constant double teams. He has just 4 catches for 58 yards.

TE Stephen Alexander (SD) was thought to be physically ready to play this week. He did start, but he did not finish after re-injuring his groin. Alexander was on many sleeper lists to start this season, but it is starting to look like injuries will keep him from being productive this year.

TE Tony Gonzalez (KC) looks to be far more injured than the Chiefs will admit. He has only four catches for 26 yards thus far.

TE Daniel Graham (NE) - With Fauria catching two TDs this week near the goal line, Daniel Graham may have to wait yet another year before being a decent fantasy producer at tight end.

PK Martin Gramatica (TB) - He had two FGs and what would have been the game-winning PAT blocked against the Panthers. Some of this may not be his fault, but when in doubt shoot the kicker. He single handedly lost this game for the Bucs and knowing how little love kickers get anyway, I am guessing the players are not too happy about it.
