Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Kerry Collins (NYG) - After a week of rallying around his coach, Collins tossed a trio of TDs in the first half yesterday. This despite a makeshift offensive line and what was suppose to be a good Redskin pass defense. The Giants continue to roll through the air and Collins is the big reason for that.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) - OK, the guy tossed zero TDs and three INTs so what's he doing here? After three weeks he has attempted 127 pass attempts to lead the league. And this was after missing some time after dislocating a finger yesterday. The Lions are going to continue to struggle defensively which will have the team relying on Harrington's arm in the second half.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) - It is only a matter of time before Leftwich is the team's starting QB. In limited action, he has been nearly perfect completing  11 of 13 for 124 yards and 2 TDs.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) - After three weeks, he leads all QBs with 899 passing yards and has scored 5 TDs. We expected the Fun-N-Gun to be much better this year and Ramsey has not disappointed. We expect him to continue his hot start throughout the season.

QB Brad Johnson (TB) - Brad is quietly putting up great numbers this season. He is second in pass attempts with 121. He is third in passing yards behind Patrick Ramsey and Tommy Maddox. He is tied for third with 5 passing TDs. Brad Johnson is confident in Gruden's play calling. Jon Gruden is confident in Brad's ability to make the required throws. This team just gets better and better. With a defense that forces so many turnovers and gives the offense the short field consistently, we think Brad Johnson is headed for a career year.

QB Jeff Blake (Ari) - After three weeks, Jeff sits as the ninth best fantasy QB this season. He is not flashy, but has a team that is always playing from behind. Because of this he will get his opportunities (even if some of these are in garbage time).

QB Marc Bulger (StL) - We felt Marc needed a good game in either this week's outing or at home against Arizona. He did have two interceptions, but played strong completing 21 of 34 passes for a TD and also rushed for another TD. No one is blaming Marc Bulger for this tough loss. We expect Marc to lock up the job for the rest of the season with a solid effort against the Cardinals at home this week.

RB Mike Alstott (TB) - When the game is over, Alstott gets the call. He runs out the clock and holds onto the ball. He also scores the TDs in the redzone. This guy will have several garbage TDs this year in blowouts. Tampa Bay looks to be the best football team by a wide margin this season.

RBs Derrick Blaylock & Larry Johnson (KC) - If the Chiefs keep blowing people out, Blaylock and Johnson are going to get some carries. Over these bye weeks that we're currently in, if you're in a crunch at RB, these two guys might be worth a look.

RB Shawn Bryson (Det) - He looks like he's grabbed the reins in Detroit. Bryson had far more touches than Gary (20 to 6) and scored the team's only TD.

RB Eddie George (Ten) - In a game where rookie Chris Brown was supposed to make his debut (and therefore begin moving George to the sidelines) the veteran reached the 100-yard mark and punched in the game-clinching TD with a powerful run. He still was below four yards per carry, but will continue to start as long as the Titans are winning.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Lamar Gordon (StL) - Marshall Faulk is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. Lamar Gordon should be a great poducer filling in for Faulk.

RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) - Normally, if a back gets less than half as many yards as he gained the week before, it's a disappointing effort. Lewis did come back to Earth a bit yesterday, but his planet is still a different world than most backs.

RB Michael Pittman (TB) - As long as he can stay out of court, he'll be the primary back for the Buccaneers. He carried the ball 20 times yesterday and was huge in the passing game with seven catches. More importantly, Thomas Jones fumbled on his only carry of the game (which set up Atlanta's only TD).

RB Fred Taylor (Jac) - He didn't see the end zone, but Taylor ran for 126 yards against the Colts. He became the first back to surpass 100 yards against the Colts defense in 15 games. He did this despite facing a defense that rarely double teamed any of the Jacksonville receivers. Fred should see better running lanes once Jimmy Smith returns to the field in week 5.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) - Finally! Sure, the Chargers are going to get beat, but they still need to give Tomlinson his carries. We downgraded Tomlinson last week because we were afraid that the Chargers would abandon the running game once behind. But after three weeks, LT leads all RBs with 18 catches and is still one of the most elusive backs in the games. He rushed for 105 yards and a TD and caught 8 passes for another 51 yards against one of the best run defenses in the league. Things appeared to be much more open with David Boston on the field.

RB Moe Williams (Min) - Onterrio Smith was supposed to get a big chunk of action yesterday, but Williams put up 149 total yards while Smith only garnered 3 total touches. The team is winning and Moe Williams brings consistency at the RB position. Don't look for the Vikings to mess with a good thing.

RB Ricky Williams (Mia) -Williams is obviously Miami's horse. They rode him a team-record 42 times yesterday. He does not even have to have big runs with that many looks.  What was most amazing is Williams got stronger in the third and fourth quarters. There will be more games where Miami simply hands the ball off all game long.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Tony Hollings (Hou) -   He rushed 7 times for 41 yards in his debut. Compare this to Stacey Mack's 13 carries for 39 yards and you have the makings of a RB controversy. Tony is clearly the faster runner and might start getting a lot more carries as Mack just has a 1 year contract with the Texans. Hollings looks to be the future RB in Houston.

RB Kevin Faulk (NE) - Against a soft Jets rush defense, this would have been a game that one would have thought Antowain Smith would get the bulk of the work.  And although they did use Smith 13 times for 55 yards, they used Faulk even more (17 carries for 79 yards and 2 receptions for 12 yards). We believe Faulk is the starting RB going forward, but will split time with Smith because of possible durability concerns with playing every down.

WR Drew Bennett (Ten) - The Titans have been desperate for some quality production from a WR not named Derrick Mason. Bennett tallied 105 yards and a TD on his eight catches yesterday. This should hold off rookie Tyrone Calico who was said to be coming on strong in practice. Tyrone did not catch a pass this week.

WR Anquan Boldin (Ari) - The TDs will not be plentiful on this team, but Boldin continues to put up good yardage numbers as the primary receiver for the Cardinals.

WR Andre Johnson (Hou) - This guy is a huge fantasy force already. He hauled in two TDs yesterday to go with his 102 yards. He runs routes that look like he has been in this league for years. The fact that he is still learning as a rookie bodes well for his future.

WR Terrell Owens (SF) - No, his performance yesterday (eight catches for 90 yards) wasn't too spectacular, but he had a few choice words in the post-game press conference. Said Owens, "I don't know how many times we've been in the red zone and my number hasn't been called." After failing to score a TD and settling for FGs, one has to think he is primed for a huge week.

WR Peter Warrick (Cin) - Another week and another score. Warrick is involved in this offense and appears to finally be ready to produce each week. After three weeks, Warrick sits as the 18th best receiver. Not bad for a guy that was drafted very late in many leagues.

WR Reggie Wayne (Ind) - Wayne has his coming out party yesterday against the Jaguars. He likely will not see 10 catches for 141 yards and a pair of TDs (he almost had a third score on a tipped ball) again this year, but he definitely will get the eye of Peyton Manning more often from now on.  This in turn helps the whole Colts offense (less double teaming on Harrison, less jamming the line to stop James, etc).  Wayne showed the world that if your game plan is to stop Harrison at all costs that he will make you pay. It has been a long-time since the Colts have had a legitimate #2 WR. Reggie Wayne looks like he is that guy.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Kelly Campbell (Min) - This guy is fast. Real fast. We expected him to earn the starting job in preseason, but failed to do that. Then came the announcement that he was behind both D'Wayne Bates and Nate Burleson on the depth charts. Consequently, he went undrafted in many leagues this year. But make no mistake that this is the player the Vikings want to lineup opposite of Randy Moss. D'Wayne Bates could not afford to miss a game to injury.  Kelly caught just two passes, but managed 85 yards and a TD. He also had a reverse for 12 yards. In fact Campbell has had 3 reverses for 46 yards so far this year. He is too good not to leapfrog Bates and Burleson in this high octane offense. In the offseason Culpepper and Moss both commented that this guy is the next star in this league.  They said that because they see his speed every day in practice. He is still very raw, but do not under-estimate his ability in this offense.

WR Laveranues Coles (Was) - He switched teams. He is suppose to be struggling right?  After three games, Coles has shown he is one of the best WRs in the game. He is tied for second with 23 receptions. He leads all receivers with 391 yards. Every time I watch him play I am amazed at the level of separation he is getting. Coles is fast and runs very good routes. Don't think this is a fluke. He is this good and is getting better.

TE Todd Heap (Bal) - Five catches for 50 yards and a TD is what we've come to expect from Heap. We still expect him to finish the year as a top 3 TE.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) - 92 yards and 6 catches is more like what he expected from Shockey. He did not score this week, but also did not drop a TD pass and then laugh about it.  The NY Giants passing offense looks very strong and we see Shockey getting his catches and yards despite a slow start the first two weeks.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE Matt Schobel (Cin) - The Bengals players never get any love and Schobel is no different. Yet after three weeks, he has 6 catches for 118 yards. If you need a cheap TE to get through the bye weeks, he could be your man.

PK Owen Pochman (SF) - Knocking in four FGs in your first game as a 49er isn't too bad. He also boomed the kickoffs so he looks very secure as long as he stays accurate in FG attempts.

DT Miami Dolphins (Mia) - Buffalo only managed 118 yards, and the offense did not score. This unit finally performed to their early hype.

Aberrations

QB Daunte Culpepper (Min) - His owners were saved this week by the two rushing TDs. He left the game with only 105 passing yards (and is being considered doubtful for this week)

RB Deuce McAllister (NO) - More carries than yards is a horrible day, but McAllister will definitely bounce back.

RB Antowain Smith (NE) - Yes, he finally averaged more than two yards a carry, but the opponent had more to do with his 55 yards than did Smith's ability. He's still being out-produced by Kevin Faulk and is likely to return to his 25-30 yard weekly output each week.

WR Andre Davis (Cle) - He scored this week, but he still looks to be option #4 at WR.

WRs Joe Horn & Donte Stallworth (NO) were held to a combined 25 yards on 3 catches. The Saints will correct that quickly.

WR Travis Taylor (Bal) - Taylor had more carries (one) than catches (zero).  That won't happen again this year.

Downgrades

The entire Falcons offense is here until Michael Vick returns. Doug Johnson was accurate yesterday (only three passed hit the ground), but three other tosses were caught by Buccaneer defenders. The running game was not better as they totaled 29 yards and were led on the ground by Warrick Dunn's seven yards (on nine carries). Admittedly this was against the Bucs, but the falcons have been struggling without Vick.

The entire Packers offense belongs on this list. Maybe it was the heat (100+ degrees all game), but if they can't excel against the Arizona Cardinals then maybe it's just not their year.

QB Mark Brunell (Jac) - He was horribly ineffective yesterday and then watched as Byron Leftwich directed a TD drive in under two minutes. He won't start much longer.

QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) - How do you get downgraded on a bye? That happens when the team says this could be your last chance at starting if things do not improve. This appears to be the case in Chicago. The Bears draw the struggling Packers at home, but Kordell will need to be good to great if he expects to continue to start. Chris Chandler could see action this week if Kordell struggles early.

QB Kurt Warner (StL) - All that is lacking now is for an actual funeral to take place. Make no mistake about it, Warner is the backup. Bulger has another solid game and draws the cardinals this week. Look for Warner to be traded in the offseason.

QB Drew Bledsoe (Buf) - Facing a Miami defense that had yielded 316 yards a game through the air in it's first two contests, Bledsoe could not do a thing all day. Completing just 10 of 25 passes for 98 yards and 2 interceptions, Bledsoe looked awful.  Bledsoe won't always be this bad, but he won't be as good as he looked the first two weeks either.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) - For the 2nd week in a row, Dillon had to leave with an injury.  He's never had an injury riddled season in his career. Sure, the year is young, but it's starting to look like 2003 is not his year.

RB Thomas Jones (TB) - His only carry resulted in a fumble that was returned to the two-yard line.  That led to the Buccaneers defense allowing their first (and only) TD of the season. Note to Jones: "Just sit here. If Pittman has to leave, we'll get back to you."

RB Amos Zereoue (Pit) - He didn't run poorly, but he should have been huge against the Bengals. The team used Bettis often and also on 4th and 1 on the goal line. This does not bode well for Zereoue getting enough carries to be a great fantasy RB this season.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) - Not only was he struggling on the field, but he is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with a broken hand. We think Faulk's best efforts are behind him.

RB Olandis Gary (Det) - He looks like the backup to Shawn Bryson to us. No runner is likely going to be successful for the Lions, but Gary isn't even getting the opportunities now.

RB Onterrio Smith (Min) - He might be the future, but that future is not now.  He could not capitalize on the injury to Doug Chapman as Moe Williams played great. Despite playing solid last week, Smith got just two carries (for 3 yards) and had 1 reception for 6 yards.

WR Marvin Harrison (Ind) - Teams have found a way to shut him down this season by double teaming on him on virtually every pass play. After three weeks, he sits as the 40th best WR (134 yards and a TD). You know he will come alive soon, but it may take more weeks of Reggie Wayne to hurt teams before Harrison sees less coverage.

WR Corey Bradford (Hou) - The youngsters Andre Johnson and Jabar Gaffney are far more involved in the offense than is Bradford.

WR Quincy Morgan (Cle) - Another week and he grabs two more not-so-big catches. He should not be starting for you until he shows something.

WR JJ Stokes (Jac) - He got his opportunity to shine while Jimmy Smith served his four game suspension and has squandered it. He can not get off the line and is flustered as he is jammed on virtually every play. Mathew Hatchette appears to be the better player and could line up opposite of Jimmy Smith when Smith returns in week 5. After three weeks as a starter, JJ has caught 10 passes for 74 yards and 0 TDs. Ouch.
