Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Rich Gannon (Oak) - While the Chargers aren't exactly a defensive powerhouse any more, this game could very easily get Gannon and the rest of the Raiders offense back on track. The offensive line looked much better with Barrett Robbins under center again.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** QB Jon Kitna (Cin) - Kitna finally put together four quarters without committing a costly mistake, and the Bengals were rewarded with a victory. The emergence of Chad Johnson and Peter Warrick makes Kitna a viable fantasy option in a pinch.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** QB Quincy Carter (Dal) - OK, we are officially believers now. Quincy Carter is making the correct reads and executing this offense very well. It seems like he has benefited from Bill Parcells' approach more than anyone. His trio of wide receivers is very good (Galloway, Bryant and Glenn) and his ability to scramble makes him a poor man's Michael Vick. This Dallas team is starting to believe in themselves too.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** RB Domanick Davis (Hou) - Davis had 20 touches yesterday (including four receptions). He out produced starting RB Stacey Mack 53 yards to 39 yards on the same number of carries (16). Most importantly, Davis was on the field during Houston's late game-winning drive.

RB Stephen Davis (Car) - He finally scored and also became the first back in franchise history to open the season with at least three straight 100-yard games. Even more impressive is that Davis gained his 153 yards despite sitting while the team gave DeShaun Foster 10 garbage time carries. Carolina is very much a running team. That makes Davis an even better fantasy option. He will get the ball.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** RB Arlen Harris (StL) - Harris spelled Lamar Gordon when Gordon missed time with a wrist injury. There has not been any official word on Gordon's wrist, but Harris could be worth a shot as the now #2 in St. Louis until Faulk returns.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** Rock Cartwright (Was) - He looked extremely powerful punching in a short TD yesterday from the three yard line. He won't get you any yards, but Cartwright can help those in TD only leagues in a pinch.

RB Troy Hambrick (Dal) - Troy had his coming out party with 127 yards and a TD on 24 carries. This is just what the Tuna wanted to see and Hambrick delivered.

RB Fred Taylor (Jac) - Sixty-seven yards and a single TD normally doesn't warrant being placed on this list, but that's not why Taylor is here. Next week, the Jaguars host the equally pitiful Chargers. Look for Taylor to have an outstanding performance in week five.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) - That collective sigh of relief you heard yesterday was from Tomlinson owners. Forget the talk about weaknesses on the offensive line and how defenses are stacking things up to stop Tomlinson. If the Chargers give LT the carries, he will produce. For a bonus, he even passed for a TD yesterday. He is among the most exciting players in the NFL. With a cast of no-names playing WR and TE for the Chargers due to injuries, look for the team to try and get Tomlinson the football often. He rushed 28 times, caught 7 passes and threw a pass yesterday.

WR Marty Booker (Chi) - It's extremely unusual to see an upgrade for a player that hasn't even played this week. However, if you'll look to Booker's week five opponent, you'll find an Oakland defense that has been torched lately. If Booker makes it through tonight's game healthy, he should have a great week five performance.

WR Marvin Harrison (Ind) - It looks like Harrison got tired of seeing Reggie Wayne get the spotlight. Most impressive is that his 158 yards and three scores came on only eight targets.

WR Torry Holt (StL) - On a day that saw Isaac Bruce become the Rams' all-time leader in receiving yardage, Holt served notice that the record will soon be his.

WR Chad Johnson (Cin) - This is definitely a big-play WR. On only three catches, Johnson scored twice (including a 55-yard TD with 20 seconds remaining the first half).

WR Johnnie Morton (KC) - It's not often when Morton can claim more total yards and more catches than Priest Holmes. He is clearly the number one WR on the Chiefs. The last we checked, Marc Boerigter was mumbling to himself about 8 TD catches last year.

WR Randy Moss (Min) - Eight catches for 172 yards and three TDs is exactly why Moss sits as the best WR in the game today. Even with a hurt back, could not be denied on the jump balls thrown to him.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** WR Bobby Shaw (Buf) - Shaw is out producing Josh Reed and has hauled in at least three catches in every game thus far this season. Further, Shaw was targeted 13 times (the same as Eric Moulds) compared to Reed's three targets. Whether the team admits it or not, Bobby Shaw is the #2 WR in Buffalo.

WR Jimmy Smith (Jac) - The four week suspension is over, and the Jaguars desperately need help at WR.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** WR Peter Warrick (Cin) - No, Warrick did not find the endzone, but he was the most targeted receiver and hauled in the most catches.

WR Kevin Johnson (Cle) - He caught 5 passes for just 89 yards, but he has emerged as the #1 WR in Cleveland. And the Browns look bad enough on defense that the #1 WR in Cleveland could have great value the rest of this season.

WR Andre Johnson (Hou) - The Houston passing game looks a lot better this season and most of that has to do with the strong play of rookie Andre Johnson. Despite being double-teamed a lot yesterday, Andre managed 8 catches for 97 yards.

WR Ashley Lelie (Den) - Despite what Shanahan may tell us, he looks like he is the #2 WR on Denver now. He also is the homerun threat on this offense and can score from anywhere with his speed.

TE Kyle Brady (Jac) - Much like with Fred Taylor above, Brady is here because of his week five opponent. Over the last three weeks, the Chargers have allowed opposing TEs to catch 19 balls for 169 yards and three scores.

TE Shannon Sharpe (Den) - He's still the best receiver on the team. He could end up as the top fantasy TE by season's end.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** TE Ernie Conwell (NO) - He is clearly a huge part of the Saints offense. He finished with 6 catches for 88 yards last night.

TE Doug Jolley (Oak) - Without Jerry Porter in the lineup, the Raiders are using Jolley more to help move the chains. He caught 7 passes for 55 yards and a score. His value should move even higher as he faces Chicago and Cleveland the next two weeks.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** PK John Kasay (Car) - The team's attitude is rushing and defense. That means the Panthers will be willing to settle for FGs if they must. Kasay will have several high scoring games this year.

PK Mike Vanderjagt (Ind) - He and the Colts are scoring a ton of points. He might have started as the drunk idiot kicker in the offseason, but he has backed up his commitment to winning by hitting everything in sight. He is perfect for the year.

DT Carolina Panthers (Car) - They gave up a 100 yards to T.J. Duckett, but this is a very strong unit and kept the Falcons out of the endzone.

KR/PR - Dante Hall (KC) - My goodness! Talk about coming up big when your team desperately needs a shot in the arm.

Aberrations

QB Peyton Manning (NO) - Peyton does not get the upgrade here despite 6 TD passes because his next three weeks are: Tampa Bay, Carolina and his bye week. Now is the week to sell Peyton Manning as his stock will never be higher.

QB Gus Frerotte (Min) - He clearly still has skills, but look for Dante Culpepper to take back over the reigns this week.

RB T.J. Duckett (Atl) - It may look on paper like Duckett has surpassed Dunn as the team's starting RB. However, Atlanta correctly felt that Duckett's style was a better fit against the Carolina defense. He won't always be the better fit, and Dunn will see significant action in future games. At best, Duckett is in a time sharing situation.

RB Priest Holmes (KC) - He barely surpassed 100 total yards and was kept out of the end zone. Put down the razor because that won't happen too often.

*** WAIVER WIRE *** RB Brian Westbrook (Phi) - The 96 yards on eleven carries looks fantastic, but 62 of those yards were on one play. Aside from that scoring run, Westbrook looked pretty ordinary. Also, Correll Buckhalter was given eleven carries and also scored (with a 2-yard run). A good move could be to acquire Westbrook from free agency and then sending him packing to a team desperate for RB help.

WR Quincy Morgan (Cle) - The 92 yards and TD look great on paper, but the first 71 yards (including the TD) came on a screen play where the Bengals looked like a Pac 10 defense. If you still have Morgan, consider dealing him to someone that thinks he is back to form.

Downgrades

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) - He simply looked terrible. He threw high. He threw low. He threw behind. At one point, the Vikings had caught more passes from Garcia than had Terrell Owens. This was all against a Minnesota team that is generally easy to move the ball on.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) - Despite being red hot early this season, Ramsey is still a young QB. HC Spurrier has shown that he is going to use a balanced approach (equal running and passing attempts) this season. Ramsey is likely to be better than his preseason projections, but his value likely peaked last week and could be headed south the rest of the season.

QB Kyle Boller (Bal) looks pretty confused out there right now. He is handing off well, but the Ravens are going to need more production from his arm if they are to win many games this year.

QB Doug Johnson (Atl) is awful. End of story.

RB Mike Anderson & Quentin Griffin (Den) - Thirty-three yards on 16 carries will not get the job done. This was expected to be an easy matchup for these players. But their inability to run made this game a lot closer than it should. Hurry back Clinton Portis.

RB Joe Burns (Buf) - His 17 yards on 8 carries isn't likely going to worry Travis Henry any time soon.

RB Duce Staley (Phi) - He had just 2 carries for 4 yards. Buckhalter and Westbook each had 11 carries. This appears to be RBBC at it's very worst.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) - For the third straight game, Dillon was unable to finish a game due to injury as he tweaked his groin injury again. It looks like it's time to bench the once-durable Dillon until he shows he can finish a game.

RB Warrick Dunn (Atl) - The team felt that back-up T.J. Duckett was better suited to run against the Panthers defense, and they were right. Dunn isn't *done*, but he will definitely share time with the younger back.

RB Eddie George (Ten) - George is not a RB that can produce quality stats on a mere 11 carries. Granted, the Titans only had 38 offensive snaps, but George still only received half of the team's 22 rushing attempts.

RB Stacey Mack (Hou) - Even though he scored a TD, Mack was on the side lines at the end of the game. On the field was the youngster Domanick Davis. At the very least, Davis will eat into Mack's carries. At worst (for Mack), Davis will get the majority of touches from here forward.

RB Tony Hollings (Hou) - Tony put up great stats last week, but he had a key fumble. This week he was inactive for the game. Make no mistake about it. Fumbling will cost you your spot. Mack fumbled and threw an ill-advised pass this week and watched Domanick Davis lead this team in the 4th quarter.

RB William Green (Cle) - The Browns look awful and have to abandon the run game early in most games. They also just can't run block. If you can't create holes against the Cincinnati defense, how are you possibly going to run against Pittsburgh next week. Dump him while there is any value left with this RB.

WR Matthew Hatchette (Jac) - Hatchette has put up modest stats the last couple of weeks, but he was out produced by newly signed Troy Edwards. With Jimmy Smith returning, Hatchette has run out of chances this year.

WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) - He is now option number 4 or 5 in the passing game. Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie are the prime WR targets and Shannon Sharpe and Clinton Portis also get their share of looks.

WR Donte Stallworth (NO) - Jerome Pathon is cutting into his playing time on two receiver sets and that could spell doom for Stallworth's numbers. Maybe this was just a matchup situation the Saints wanted, but Stallworth managed just 1 catch for 17 yards. Jerome Pathon finished 41 yards and a TD on two catches.

WR Josh Reed (Buf) - He has lost the #2 WR job opposite of Eric Moulds to Bobby Shaw.

WR David Boston (SD) - The more news that comes out, the more it sounds like Boston could be facing more than just a one-week suspension. Can someone tell me how a team guarantees $47 million without checking out the character of the player? This situation could be seen by outsiders miles away.

WR Terrell Owens (SF) - In the past, when Owens would complain about not getting enough touches, he would explode the following week. When Owens catches fewer balls than Garrison Hearst, something is not right in San Francisco.

WR Corey Bradford (Hou) - He is an afterthought in the passing game as the team's #3 WR.

WR Curtis Conway (NYJ) - With the game on the line, the team seems more confident in Wayne Chrebet to make the play. Curtis had another bad game catching just 2 passes for 24 yards.

WR Peerless Price (Atl) - Despite a commitment to get him the ball this wee, Price caught just 5 passes for 30 yards. Doug Johnson is terrible and so is Price until Vick returns.

TE Billy Miller (Hou) - Last year, the Texans had terrible receivers. This year they have Andre Johnson and Jabar Gaffney playing great. This has limited the looks to Billy Miller.

TE Stephen Alexander (SD) - The Chargers were devastated at WR and could have used Alexander in a big way this week, but he misses yet another game. He is too easily nicked and unable to play with pain for us to like him any more this season.

PK Owen Pochman (SF) - It doesn't matter how big of a leg Pochman has if he only gets on the field once.

DT New Orleans - This team is riddled with injuries. And you have to believe every NFL team saw how easy they were fooled by Indianapolis on the play action pass. Look for this blueprint to be used to great success by the other teams in the league until the saints show they can cover people.
