Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Quincy Carter (Dal) - Carter is on of the surprise stories of the year. He simply produces good stats and should have a good outing week six as well as the Eagles secondary has allowed a ton of yards this year.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) - He won't face defenses a poor as the Chargers too often, but he put up 300+ yards and tossed a pair of TDs (a third was called back for penalty). Mark Brunell does not look like he will get another chance this season.

QB Steve McNair (Ten) - Yes, the late INT hurt a whole lot, but McNair is an elite fantasy QB. If all four limbs are still attached to his body, he'll be on the field. He leads all QBs with 804 passing yards over the last three weeks.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Kyle Boller (Bal) - The Ravens are coming off a bye week and will be facing the Arizona Cardinals. If you're desperate for a starting QB, take a look at Boller. He could finally have that break-out game.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) - Leading the Bears to their first win of the season will keep Stewart on the field. Over the next several weeks, he will not face a difficult pass defense so a string of good outings would not be a surprise.

RB Tiki Barber (NYG) - While Delvin Joyce was given three carries, Barber is still the workhorse for the Giants. He produced 99 total yards and a TD against a stingy Dolphins defense.

RB Stephen Davis (Car) - Ho hum. Another week goes by and Davis turns in 162 total yards and TD. If he stays healthy, you are looking at the 2003 NFL MVP.

RB Ahman Green (GB) - He just keeps throwing up TDs and 100+ yard days. Green has totaled 676 yards and seven TDs in five games this season.

RB William Green (Cle) - We welcome Green back to the 100-yard club as he pushed through the Steelers defense for 120 total yards. Even better news for Green is that Oakland and San Diego are up next on the roster.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) - Henry is quietly scoring a lot of TDs this season despite being banged up and not generating an impressive yards per carry. But when the game is on the line, Henry has come up big. In most NFL overtime games, when the ball is in the red zone, teams bring in the FG unit. In Buffalo, Henry gets the short TD run.

RB Deuce McAllister (NO) - McAllister had two strikes against him as he spent Saturday night in the hospital with the flu and was facing the impressive Carolina defensive line. Of course it made perfect sense for McAllister to hang 183 total yards on the Panthers yesterday. What's even better is the week six opponent is the Chicago Bears.

RB Clinton Portis (Den) - It looks like the week off did Portis a bit of good. He looked very healthy as he blitzed the Chiefs defense for 220 total yards and a TD.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Marcel Shipp (Ari) - Emmitt Smith was terrible before exiting with a shoulder sprain. Could Shipp finally get a share of looks in Arizona?

RB Fred Taylor (Jac) - How glad is Taylor to have Jimmy Smith back? A real threat at WR opened things up for Taylor to amass 164 total yards and a pair of TDs.

RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) - Another 100-yard game has to instill confidence in both Thomas and the Chicago offensive line. The fact that Adrian Peterson did not even touch the rock also bodes well for Anthony Thomas in the future.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Brian Westbrook (Phi) - Sure, there is a crowd in Philadelphia, but Westbrook has produced a TD in each of the last two week and has had the most carries since the team's bye week.

RB Moe Williams (Min) - The game was tied at 20 until Williams scored a pair of TDs. There is very much a RBBC developing in Minnesota as Williams, Onterrio Smith, and Doug Chapman each has 10 or more carries. However, in the red zone, it is Williams' world.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) - Most people wrote off Bennett's season at their drafts. But the reports look better each week and he now looks like he has a very good chance to return in a few weeks. It is a loaded backfield for sure, but he could be worth a waiver wire spot just in the hope that he gets back in the mix. The Minnesota Vikings OL continues to be among the best in the league.

WR David Boston (SD) - Boston finally showed why the Chargers brought him in as he caught 14 balls for 181 yards and a pair of TDs. Maybe Schottenheimer should have suspended him three weeks earlier.

WR Nate Burleson (Min) - Burleson was moved into the starting lineup last week and should remain there even when D'Wayne Bates returns from injury. He runs very efficient routes which is the perfect complement for Moss who stretches the field.

WR Donald Driver (GB) - He looks fully recovered from his scary neck injury a few weeks ago. Driver is still the top WR on the roster.

WR Troy Edwards (Jac) - In only his second game with the Jaguars, Edwards scored his second TD.

WR Randy Moss (Min) - Another game and two more TDs for Moss. With the team undefeated, the Vikings are believing and Randy is playing as hard as ever. No one catches a better jump ball in the league and Frerotte has shown that it pays to throw that pass a few times every game.

WR Santana Moss (NYJ) - Over the bye week, head coach Herman Edwards demoted Curtis Conway to the #3 WR and inserted Moss into the starting lineup. Moss should get a good deal of targets now.

WR Peerless Price (Atl) - In five days, Price went from being doubtful to even see action to turning in his best game of the season. Actually, Price had more receiving yards yesterday than he had the previous four weeks combined. He will likely be even better when Michael Vick returns.

WR Jimmy Smith (Jac) - Smith welcomed himself back to the league with 137 receiving yards. So much for taking a few weeks to get into playing shape. It looks like he'll be able to work well with the rookie Byron Leftwich.

WR Travis Taylor (Bal) - Taylor's week six opponent is the only reason he's on this list. If Taylor is going to show up this year, his coming out party is likely to be this Sunday against the Cardinals.

WR Peter Warrick (Cin) - He's a favorite whipping boy for some fantasy players, but he's also a favorite target of Jon Kitna. His per catch average is still too low, but Warrick is on pace to catch a lot of balls this year (seven more yesterday).

TE Ernie Conwell (NO) - Four more catches for this undervalued TE. He also gets the Bears this Sunday.

TE Mikhael Ricks (Det) - Ricks caught a TD and was the team's leading receiver on Sunday. The Lions are off week six, but during weeks seven through ten, Ricks will face a string of teams that are suspect against TEs.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE L.J. Smith (Phi) - Smith's four catches were four more than Chad Lewis hauled in.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) - He did not score a TD, but the eleven catches for 110 yards for a TE is very impressive. He is a huge part of the offensive scheme this season.

Aberrations

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) - Normally, three total TDs would put you on the Upgrades list, but against the Lions he should have likely done more. The next two opponents (Seattle and Tampa Bay) won't be as porous.

QB Matt Hasselbeck (Sea) - He was very quiet against the Packers, but that won't happen very often.

RB Mike Cloud (NE) - Cloud certainly flashed his talent yesterday, but there are simply not enough balls to go around in New England. Antowain Smith got more carries against the Titans, and Kevin Faulk will likely be back in the lineup next week. It looks like this RBBC just got a little more crowded.

RB Rudi Johnson (Cin) - Johnson turned in a decent game (79 total yards with a TD), but he will return to the bench week seven when Corey Dillon returns from injury.

RB Ricky Williams (Mia) - His 39 rushing yards were not a big surprise as the Giants have been stingy against the run. Williams still produced a rushing TD.

WR Troy Brown (NE) - Yes, he finally scored, but it occurred on a bad play by the defender. The rest of the day saw Brown catch one more ball for six yards.

Downgrades

QB Aaron Brooks (NO) - Brooks is simply playing horribly. There is a chance that he could bounce back against the Bears this weekend, but right now it looks like Brooks would have trouble in a skeleton passing drill.

QB Rich Gannon (Oak) - Gannon should have ripped through the Bears, but he put up fewer fantasy points than Kordell Stewart. Gannon is simply out of sync right now. Going to Cleveland is not a place for him to get well. The Raiders need Jerry Porter back soon if they are going to get this offense back on track.

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) - Maddox had a horrible day as he threw more TDs to Cleveland defenders (one) than Pittsburgh receivers (zero). It won't get much easier next week as the Steelers must travel to a Denver Broncos squad still upset over letting a game get away. In Maddox last three games, he has just 1 passing TD against 5 interceptions.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) - The good news is that Ramsey scored twice yesterday (once passing and once rushing). The bad news is that Ramsey tossed two INTs (one was returned for a TD) and badly missed a wide open Laveranues Coles for the game-tying 2-point conversion. Ramsey is a tough-minded QB, but plays like that can sometimes haunt a young player. Finally, the horrible news is that Tampa Bay is next week's opponent.

RB Shawn Bryson (Det) - The last few weeks, Bryson has easily out produced Olandis Gary, but yesterday Gary received the bulk of carries and the TD run.

RBs T.J. Duckett & Warrick Dunn (Atl) - When the big guy is your "between-the-20s" runner and your little guy is your "goal line" back, something just isn't right. If Duckett isn't going to be given any TD looks, then his worth is shallow at best. Dunn isn't a total loss though as he is still active in the passing game.

RB Eddie George (Ten) - It's bad enough that yards per carry average can't get out of two point whatever, but when the QB gets all of the one-yard TDs George's value is almost nil.

RB Troy Hambrick (Dal) - Sure, he's had a couple of good games recently, but the next opponent will most likely keep Hambrick under wraps. The Eagles are struggling with a patch-work secondary, but they have allowed a mere 222 rushing yards this season.

RB Emmitt Smith (Ari) - He was ineffective (six carries for negative one yards) before leaving with a sprained shoulder. The fact that he was quoting his son in what resembled a fairwell speech after the game does not bode well. Stick a fork in Emmitt. He has had a great career, but he looks done.

RBs Duce Staley & Correll Buckhalter (Phi) - Buckhalter barely got off the bench yesterday as he gained three yards on three carries. Staley did rush the ball ten times, but he did not catch a pass. It looks like Brian Westbrook may be the favored runner right now in Philadelphia.

RB Amos Zereoue (Pit) - A mere thirteen carries isn't going to get the job done. Even worse is watching Jerome Bettis punch in the one-yard TD. Things don't look any better for Zereoue next week with the tough Broncos defense looming.

WR D'Wayne Bates & Kelly Campbell (Min) - Both of these guys will get their looks in the offense, but Nate Burleson is the team's starter opposite Randy Moss.

WR Laveranues Coles & Rod Gardner (Was) - These guys didn't exactly tear up a suspect Philadelphia secondary. They get the Buccaneers and Bills in the next two weeks so expect a drop in production.

WR Curtis Conway (NYJ) - Conway was benched over the team's bye week in favor of the younger and more exciting Santana Moss. Conway will still see action as the team's #3 WR, but he will likely not start for the rest of the season.

WR Eric Moulds (Buf) - Obviously, Moulds is not listed here because he's struggling on the field. Moulds is here because of the groin injury that he suffered in overtime yesterday. There has not been official word of the extent of the injury (Moulds says he hopes to play next week), but a bad groin is not good news for a WR.

PK Matt Bryant (NYG) - Bryant suffered a hamstring pull yesterday.
