Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Jake Delhomme (Car) - No, he's not going to move Peyton Manning out of any fantasy lineups, but Delhomme is definitely worth grabbing. He has one tough game left (week 10 against the Buccaneers), and his schedule is absolutely outstanding to close the year (Atlanta, Arizona, and Detroit in weeks 14-16).

QB Trent Green KC) - If you throw for 400 yards with three TDs and no INTs, you'll get on this list. This might be the jump-start that Green so desperately needed.

QB Brad Johnson (TB) - Here is one of the most underrated QBs in the league. Johnson is facing an average schedule, but he's producing above average results. He is tied for the passing TD lead with 12 (despite playing one less game than the leaders).

QB Steve McNair (Ten) - McNair only threw for 421 yards, three TDs, and no INTs. You might be looking at the top fantasy QB for the 2003 season. YTD he has 1,632 yards passing with 11 TDs and 2 INTs. He has also added 51 rushing yards and 2 TDs. He had a perfect QB rating yesterday at halftime. There's no way McNair can be out of your starting lineup right now.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) - He is targeting the October 26th game as his return to action.

QB David Carr (Hou) - The Texans still give up way too many yards through the air, but that works in favor of David Carr. Playing behind in most games, David has been slinging the rock a lot this year. He posted 371 passing yards and 2 TDs yesterday behind an offensive line that is giving him a lot more time to throw this year. He is averaging over 250 passing yards per contest which is better than all but 3 QBs (Steve McNair, Peyton Manning and Brad Johnson).

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Marques Tuiasosopo (Oak) - With the team at 2 - 4 and not looking sharp, Marques could get starts later in the year as the team evaluates what they have prior to next year.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Obafemi Ayanbadejo (Mia) - If you are desperate for a RB (and your league awards points for receptions), Ayanbadejo is worth a look. He had a great day catching yesterday.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Domanick Davis (Hou) - Davis just looks like he runs harder than Stacey Mack. Plus, Davis is becoming very involved in the passing game. That's huge in some scoring systems. The fact that Stacey Mack signed just a one-year deal and Tony Hollings is also waiting in the wings makes us believe Domanick Davis could get more and more playing time as the season moves along.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB DeShaun Foster (Car) - Stephen Davis is still the starting RB in Carolina, but Foster will be given more carries to keep Davis healthy. Without question, Foster is a must have player for any Davis owner.

RB William Green (Cle) - Much like in 2002, it looks like Green is ready to have a very good run in the 2nd half of the 2003 season. He should be huge again next week against the Chargers.

RB Jerome Pettis (Pit) - Not only is he getting the goal line carries, he rushed the ball 14 times compared to just 10 carries (and only 15 yards for Zereoue).

RB Kevin Faulk (NE) - He was all dinged up, but showed the leadership to be on the field on Sunday. He responded with 87 yards on 14 carries and looked a lot better than Mike Cloud.

RB Anthony Thomas (Chi) - Despite facing 8+ men in the box every week, Anthony Thomas is playing very good. He rushed 21 times for 96 yards and no TDs this week.

WR Marvin Harrison (Ind) - Yesterday, Harrison became the fastest player in NFL history to catch his 700th pass. It took the Colt 114 games (an amazing 25 games earlier than Jerry Rice). Also yesterday, Harrison became the Colts all-time leader for yards receiving.

WR Derrick Mason (Ten) - Even though he was officially listed as questionable on the injury report, Mason practiced all week and was stellar on Sunday.

WR Johnnie Morton (KC) - Morton has been scoring TDs this season and went over 100 yards receiving this week. He is putting the horrible 2002 season behind him. He should be a good fantasy WR the rest of the way.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Steve Smith (Car) - Smith turned in a great effort yesterday and is likely a free agent in your league. He could explode at the end of the season with an easy schedule.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) - There is a logjam at WR, but this kid has great skills. I expect he will be the starter opposite of Derrick Mason very soon.

PK Josh Brown (Sea) - The rookie Brown has been scoring well, but he gets to go against the woeful Chicago Bears next week.

DT Baltimore Ravens (Bal) - The Ravens scored yesterday on a INT return and a blocked punt, and they get the Bengals next week.

Aberrations

QB Kerry Collins (NYG) - Kerry passed for 314 yards yet had 0 TDs and 4 interceptions. He won't have many games where he is this unsuccessful.

Philadelphia RBs - There likely will not be another game this season that sees all three Eagles RBs scoring a TD. Brian Westbrook and Correll Buckhalter each rushed for a score while Duce Staley turned a short pass into a 52-yard TD. This has to be the biggest committee in the league as no back had more than 11 carries (Buckhalter) and no less than seven (Staley).

RB Clinton Portis (Den) - Portis was held under 50 yards rushing yesterday. Don't worry. He'll be back.

RB Chester Taylor (Bal) - He ran 10 times for 45 yards and caught another 3 passes for 25 yards. He played this much because of the high heat in Arizona this weekend (99 degrees). Look for Jamal Lewis to be on the field more in games with milder weather.

WR Corey Bradford (Hou) - He'll probably have another very good game this season, but he's still the #3 WR in Houston. He just happened to be on fire yesterday with the team needing to throw often.

TE Anthony Becht (NYJ) - Sure, Becht caught a pair of TDs on Sunday, but that probably won't happen again all season.

Downgrades

The entire Pittsburgh offense - Until the Steelers offensive line plays better, Tommy Maddox, Amos Zereoue, Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward, and Plaxico Burress are going to struggle.

The Oakland Raiders - When your team commits 19 penalties for 128 yards, you are not going to win many games. This team is a complete mess after playing for the Super Bowl just last year.

QB Steve Beuerlein (Den) - Sure, he had a couple of TDs, but Beuerlein's two INTs kept the Steelers in the game yesterday. Plummer will definitely be back next week.

QB Tom Brady (NE) - In the first half yesterday, Brady had one completion for seven yards. There is absolutely no excuse for being that pitiful. To make matters worse, his next three opponents (Miami, Cleveland, and Denver) are tough against QBs.

QB Vinny Testaverde (NYJ) - Although he played well on Sunday, Testaverde's time as the starting Jets QB is coming to a close. Chad Pennington is hopeful of an October 26th return.

QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) continues to struggle. He went 10 for 21 and lost 2 costly fumbles. Look for the Bears to try something different soon.

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) - Without any time to throw, the mediocre Seattle pass rush looked like Pro-Bowlers against the 49ers Offensive line. Making matters worse is all the coddling the 49ers are doing trying to get Terrell Qwens involved. This offense struggled last week against the porous Lions and looked equally bad this week in a division game. We expect more of the same this season unless the line can play much better soon.

QB Rich Gannon (Oak) - Between the penalties, the yelling between Gannon and the coaches, the loss of Jerry Porter to stretch the defense, the slowing down of Rice and Brown, we think Gannon isn't having any fun this year. The team is not playing with purpose and at 2 and 4 in the tough AFC West, this story is likely just starting. We could see the Raiders going to the bench soon to see what they have with Marques Tuiasosopo as the Gannon era comes to a close.

QB Kyle Boller (Bal) - 9 for 18 for 72 yards passing this week. The Ravens are not even trying to pass the ball. They rushed the ball 38 times this week with Jamal Lewis, Chester Taylor and company. Boller is averaging less than 109 yards passing per game played. Ouch.

QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) - He threw for only 126 yards against the Cowboys this week. This is the same Cowboys that is yielding 204 yards a game. Starting the season, McNabb was discussed as ne of the best QBs. Right now he should sit on your bench until he shows he can do it on the field.

RB Stephen Davis (Car) - There was already talk that David was receiving too many carries and that back-up DeShaun Foster would be spelling him more often. Davis left yesterday's game with a bruised forearm and was replaced by Foster (who was very good while amassing 85 yards on 16 carries). Davis is still the obvious starter, but it is doubtful he will have many more 25+ carry days this season.

RB Eddie George (Ten) - Not only is George struggling mightily this season, but his next opponent is the Panthers.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) - If McNair wins the iron-man award for playing hurt, what does Edge get? The team rested him another week and he will also get to recover during the team's bye this week. But with Ricky Williams playing pretty well, one has to wonder if Edge will get all the carries like before. We think he will be the primary back, but be spelled a lot more frequently.

RB Amos Zereoue (Pit) - He appears to be losing his grip on the starting job after another poor performance. Old man Bettis is the goal, line back and getting a lot of the normal carries each week too.

RB Kevan Barlow (SF) - The 49ers seem very committed to a RBBC approach. And the person getting the majority of that work again this year is Garrison Hearst. Heart's ypc numbers are up this year which also does not bode well for Barlow becoming the primary runner anytime soon.

WR Marty Booker (Chi) - We are going to go out on a limb here and guess he will not catch 100 passes again this year. He is averaging just over 3 catches a game this season.

WR Muhsin Muhammad (Car) - Despite being called the #1 WR for the Panthers, he has been below average catching just 14 passes for 153 yards and a TD in 5 contests.

WR Curtis Conway (NYJ) - The team demoted Conway to the WR #3 and despite catching 2 passes for 41 yards, the team won without him as the starter. Ask Vinny Testaverde how that situation works when he was the scapegoat last season and never got back on the field after productive play from Chad Pennington.

TE Todd Heap (Bal) - See Boller comment above. Regardless of talent, he can not get enough yards when the QB is averaging 109 passing yards per game.

PK Owen Pochman (SF) - Pochman failed on a PAT (bobbled hold) and missed a 36-yard FG wide right. Granted, the PAT wasn't his fault, but if you lose points on missed kicks it doesn't matter who was at fault. Things just aren't right in San Francisco.
