Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Aaron Brooks (NO) - Even though the opponents were Chicago and Atlanta, Brooks has thrown 5 TDs in the last two games. This might be the jumpstart that Brooks and the rest of the Saints offense needs.

QB Marc Bulger (StL) - He simply has this offense rolling right now averaging just less than 300 yards passing in his last two games. He has also scored 6 times (5 passing, 1 rushing) in the last two weeks.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) - Holcomb tossed a pair of TDs and almost pulled out a come-from-behind victory in relief of an ineffective Tim Couch. HC Butch Davis did not specifically call out a change yet at QB, but he hinted strongly that is what will take place. The fact that the Brown's fans continue to boo Tim Couch is also a telling sign. We expect Holcomb to start this week.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Danny Kanell (Den) - With Jake Plummer and now Steve Beuerlein both out, Kanell will be the Broncos starting QB for a couple of weeks. That has to be worth something.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Jon Kitna (Cin) - He had a very slow start to the season, but Kitna is heating up. He connected for 274 yards and 3 TDs this week. With the running game shaky, the Bengals passing game will be called on often. The best thing about Kitna's performance yesterday was no interceptions or fumbles lost. The threat of Carson Palmer taking over at the end of this season seems unfounded at this time.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) - He is not expected to start this week, but should see action. It is just a matter of time before he is again starting for the Jets.

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) - We were pretty down on him last week as his line played horrible. This week, he was able to stay in the pocket against a solid Tampa Bay rush and post solid numbers. The SF running game also played better which gives Jeff more options in the passing game. Despite no huge games, Jeff ranks as the 9th best QB (in fantasy points per game) over the last three weeks and has 6 TDs (4 passing, 2 rushing) during this time.

RB Domanick Davis (Hou) - Can you name the only 100-yard rusher in the history of the Houston Texans? In Davis' first start, he gained 199 total yards from scrimmage including 9 receptions for 70 yards. While the Jets' aren't exactly tough run defenders, Davis has demonstrated he deserves the carries over Stacey Mack and Tony Hollings. Stacey Mack is expected to continue to be the goal line back though.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Arlen Harris (StL) - With Marshall Faulk out for another 1-3 weeks and Lamar Gordon getting nicked almost every week, Harris looks like a guy that will get some action. If you're in dire straights, he's definitely worth a look.

RB Garrison Hearst (SF) - Even though he shares carries with Kevan Barlow (had 20 yesterday compared to 15 for Barlow), Hearst turned in an outstanding day against the Buccaneers. Over the last 3 games Hearst has averaged over 100 yards from scrimmage and scored 2 TDs.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Dorsey Levens (NYG) - He's not going to move Tiki Barber out of the starting lineup, but after 15 carries yesterday, it looks like Levens is going to be a part of the Giants offense over the remainder of the season. His playing time is directly related to Barber's inability to hold on to the football consistently.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) - Henry served notice yesterday that he won't just step aside when Willis McGahee is completely healthy. In fact, only Ahman Green has been more productive at RB the last three weeks than Travis Henry. Henry has 367 combined yards and 4 TDs in these 3 games.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) - When the Chargers win (or at least keep it close), it is usually because of the efforts of LaDainian Tomlinson. He totaled 221 yards from scrimmage yesterday and became the 2nd back this season to reach the 200-yard mark again the Browns (Jamal Lewis gained 295 yards in week two).

RB Brian Westbrook (Phi) - At the moment, this is the only skill player in Philadelphia worth having. He has scored TDs in the last four games he has played (He scored 2 yesterday including the game-winning punt return).

WRs Isaac Bruce & Torry Holt (StL) - These guys are in a groove. Over the last two games, they have combined for 28 catches, 444 yards and 4 TDs. It looks like one or the other (or both) will have 100+ yards every game from here on out depending on who the defenses try to stop. It certainly does not hurt to get perfect spirals consistently from Marc Bulger.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Terry Glenn (Dal) - Terry has become the go-to receiver in Dallas. Over the last two games, Glenn has caught 15 passes and scored 4 TDs. During this same time frame, Joey Galloway has caught 4 passes and 0 TDs.

WR Santana Moss (NYJ) - He is starting to play like the 2002 version of Laveranues Coles. The upgrade of Chad Pennington should also help Santana Moss the rest of the way.

WR Jerry Porter (Oak) - He will play tonight despite still having pain from the hernia. Unless he suffers a setback, he should have a productive 2nd half of the season. Now is the time to trade for him.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Steve Smith (Car) - He got an upgrade last week, but Smith could still be on your waiver wire. He's definitely worth a roster spot, but this week you'll have plenty of company trying to grab him. He has 17 catches and 2 TDs in his last 3 games compared to Muhsin Muhammad's 9 catches and 0 TDs during the same time frame. Steve Smith is the new #1 WR in Carolina.

WR Travis Taylor (Bal) - He finally showed some big-play potential yesterday. Taylor won't be consistent with Kyle Boller throwing the ball, but Taylor should turn in a few more games like this.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Josh Reed (Buf) - It took Moulds to miss another week for Reed to finally have his breakout game. He responded with 8 catches for 109 yards and a TD. Reed had high expectations entering this year taking over the position Peerless Price vacated. He has been inconsistent at best up to this week and often outplayed by Bobby Shaw. But this could be just the spark he needed to get his game on track.

TE Randy McMichael (Mia) - A TE catching eight balls for 102 yards will get on this list. The Dolphins need to use McMichael like this every week. He's not a game-breaker, but he is very sure handed.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE Matt Schobel (Cin) - He had a very productive afternoon catching 2 passes for 62 yards and a TD. He quietly is putting together a fine season.

Aberrations

QB Quincy Carter - Yesterday's three TD effort is as good as it will likely get for Carter. Now is the time to try to move the Dallas signal caller to a team desperate for QB help (maybe Donovan McNabb's owner) because the schedule will take a turn for the worse starting this weekend in Tampa Bay.

QB Jake Delhomme (Car) - Even though we had him as an upgrade last week, yesterday was a huge surprise to us. Delhomme does have a very good schedule over the rest of the season, but the Panthers offense doesn't lend itself to very many 362-yard passing days.

RB Najeh Davenport (GB) - Davenport had an up-and-down day that saw yet another fumble and a 76-yard TD. The last time Davenport fumbled, he lost his #2 RB spot to Tony Fisher. Keep an eye on this closely as another fumble he could easily be buried on the depth charts.

RB Ahman Green (GB) - Rams defensive coordinator Lovie Smith is one of the best in the league. His focus this week was taking Green out of the equation. Green only gained 35 on the ground, but he scored in the air and still totaled 97 yards from scrimmage. Despite Green's "down" day, Ahman has totaled 412 combined yards and 5 TDs the last three weeks (best in the NFL).

Downgrades

The entire Detroit Lions offense - Sure, the Cowboys are playing pretty well right now, but the Lions offense accumulated a mere 157 total yards and did not score (their TD was a fumble return). With James Stewart and Charles Rogers out, the Lions have no real offensive threats on the field.

The entire Philadelphia Eagles passing game - Donovan McNabb totaled 64 passing yards and negative one rushing yards yesterday. McNabb is so bad right now that he shouldn't be started until further notice. He finished the game with 9 completions (on 23 passing attempts) despite connecting on his first 5 passes. The duo of Pinkston and Thrash have contributed just 8 catches for 69 yards and 0 TDs over their last three games.

QB Steve Beuerlein (Den) - Not only did Beuerlein dislocate his pinkie finger (which will keep him out for the next 3-5 weeks), but his pre-injury performance was absolutely horrid. By the time he gets healthy, Jake Plummer should be back as well.

QB Tim Couch (Cle) - Couch struggled mightily against the normally pitiful Chargers defense. Kelly Holcomb came in, moved the offense, and likely will send Couch back to the bench.

QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) - Fiedler may have a sprained MCL in his left knee and will likely be limited in practice this week. This will give backup Brian Griese a good deal of first team snaps in practice this week, but Fiedler is expected to play on Monday against the Chargers.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) - Head coach Steve Mariucci hasn't decided whether Harrington or Mike McMahon will start this weekend against the Bears. It will be a tough decision as the two combined yesterday for 10 completions (in 33 attempts) for 81 yards and 3 INTs. Horrible.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) - The Redskins are not clicking on offense and Ramsey is getting battered. He left yesterday's game with a bruised throwing hand. The bye week is coming at a good time for him.

QB Kerry Collins (NYG) - Over the last three weeks he has 764 yards, but it has taken 138 pass attempts to post those numbers. Despite all of these passes, he has just 1 passing TD against 7 interceptions during this time.

RB Mike Cloud (NE) - He went up in smoke with just 8 yards (on 5 carries).

RB Ricky Williams (Mia) - He is still an elite RB, but he has averaged less than 70 yards rushing over the last three weeks. During this time, he has been the 19th best RB on a fantasy points per game basis.

RB Kevan Barlow (SF) - He ranks 49th the last three weeks in fantasy points per game. His numbers during this span: 139 rushing yards, 33 receiving yards and 0 TDs.

RB Ladell Betts (Was) - He had a chance to shine yesterday with Trung Canidate sidelined but was kicked in the forearm in the first half. Betts did not play in the second half, and the early reports are that he has suffered a broken arm. He finished the day with just 11 yards.

RB Tiki Barber (NYG) - It looks like he will not longer get 95% of the carries for the Giants as Dorsey Levens had 16 rushes yesterday. This is what happens when you fumble in the NFL.

RB Lamar Gordon (StL) - This guy is definitely not able to be an every down RB. His body seems to break down every week.

WR David Boston (SD) - 1 catch for 9 yards. We are guessing the Chargers are second guessing this big contract right about now.

WRs Robert Ferguson and Javon Walker (GB) - It is official. These guys just are not very good. Over the last three weeks, they have combined for 8 catches for 131 yards with no scores.

TE Chad Lewis (Phi) - He has only three catches in the last three weeks, while LJ Smith has caught 6 for 69 yards. A changing of the guard appears to have happened.

PK Olindo Mare (Mia) - Two missed 35-yard FGs in an overtime game can shatter the confidence of any place kicker. It will be interesting to see if Mare can rebound from yesterday's events. Of course it will help when the Marlins' season finally ends and the dirt is off the football field.

PK Owen Pochman (SF) - He's the John Daly of the PK world….a big leg with little direction. Missing three FGs yesterday could find himself kicking the cat in front of the unemployment line soon.

SS Sammy Knight & Brock Marion (Mia) - How slow are these guys when Troy Brown leaves them in his dust?
