Offensive Upgrades, Aberrations and Downgrades

Upgrades

QB Kerry Collins (NYG) - The entire Giants offense bounced back against the Vikings. This is the kind of game that jump-starts an offense. Collins could be an adequate starter for the remainder of the season.

QB Trent Green (KC) - Of course the offense is rolling along, but Green is actually playing very well right now. Over the last three weeks, Green has amassed 879 passing yards and 6 TDs (5 passing, 1 rushing). He has thrown just one interception during these three weeks. He looks like an every-week starter right now.

QB Jon Kitna (Cin) - The most important occurrence in Cincinnati yesterday was the 2nd straight Bengals victory. Jon Kitna has had a lot to do with it. During these two games, he has thrown for 514 yards and 5 TDs with no interceptions. He has also added 34 yards on the ground over the last 2 weeks.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) - He played yesterday and should start this weekend. He had two long drives stalled by turnovers, but looks to be the better quarterback even with a little bit of rust.

QB Marc Bulger (StL) - There is no one hotter right now at QB. He is averaging 325 passing yards and 2 passing TDs a game over his last three games. He has also scored a rushing TD. He is as hot as Kurt Warner ever was for the Rams.

QB Aaron Brooks (NO) - He did not have an earth-shattering game, but he is quietly climbing the QB ranks. He has thrown 7 passing TDs in the last three weeks (best in the NFL) and ranks as the third best fantasy QB during this period.

QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) - He was not outstanding, but had a solid game throwing short passes. He finished with 141 passing yards and a TD (on 17 of 23 pass attempts). He also 18 rushing yards on 2 attempts. This was the first week without his finger wrapped. We are not sure he is a must start just yet, but McNabb could be bouncing back.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Marques Tuiasosopo (Oak) - ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Rich Gannon may have a partially torn labrum which could hold him out 2-3 weeks. This is exactly the break Marques could use. With Jerry Porter back in the fold, expect the Raiders to stretch the field better going forward.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Jeff George (FA) - Danny Kanell was awful. The Broncos need to do something and the latest rumor has Jeff George coming to the team's rescue until Jake Plummer gets well. Whether it is Jeff George or someone else, the Broncos need to get a QB that can throw the ball downfield. Danny Kanell is not that person.

*** Waiver Wire *** QB Charlie Batch (Pit) - Maddox only completed 12 of 28 passes this week. Although this is pure speculation, we think Batch could get a shot very soon.

RB Stephen Davis (Car) - Just when it looked like De'shaun Foster would start cutting into his carries, Stephen Davis rushes 31 times for 178 yards and 2 TDs. Make no mistake about Carolina's strategy. Play great defense and run Davis early and often.

RB Tiki Barber (NYG) - After last week's game, there was concern that Dorsey Levens could be taking a significant chunk of action from Barber. As long as Barber can hang onto the ball, that does not appear to be the case. Remember that Levens was behind Delvin Joyce for much of this season.

RB Jerome Bettis (Pit) - He is the starting RB so he should be on a roster. He has not been overly impressive himself running behind a patchwork offensive line, but Zereoue has been awful.

RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi) - Buckhalter had a couple of TDs and gained 100 yards on the ground yesterday. The reason he's here is Brian Westbrook suffered a high ankle sprain yesterday. Depending on the severity of the injury to Westbrook (high ankle sprains and RBs to go together very well), Buckhalter could be a very good pickup.

RB Domanick Davis (Hou) - Davis is drawing deserved comparison to Clinton Portis. Why? Yesterday, Davis became the first rookie since Portis to produce 100+ yards rushing in his first two starts. He leads all running backs with 23 receptions in the last 3 weeks. In fact, he has 464 combined yards (plus 2 TDs) in those three weeks. He is option number 1,2 and 3 in the Houston running game.

RB Kevin Faulk (NE) - He looks healthy again and is the obvious primary RB for the Patriots. Mike Cloud and Antowain Smith have been complete after-thoughts recently.

RB DeShaun Foster (Car) - He's here in case Stephen Davis gets injured (he is not injured now). This offense is so run-oriented it's ridiculous. With as many carries that Davis is getting, the likelihood of an injury increases. If Davis is out for any period of time, Foster would be an instant fantasy stud.

RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) - So much for Lewis having a reduced role because of his injured shoulder. Sunday saw Lewis carry a career-high 32 times. He plays tough and appears to be on a mission this season.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) - After running a 4.29 in practice, the Vikings believe he is ready to contribute. The team will likely ease him back on the field, but he could become the starter again by season's end. He is expected to see action this week barring any setbacks.

*** Waiver Wire *** RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi) - Brian Westbrook left the game with an injury and Correll seized the moment. He finished the day with 15 carries for 100 yards and 2 TDs. This should catapult him into a bigger role in coming weeks.

RB Michael Pittman (TB) - Thirty more carries yesterday. Pittman is becoming a workhorse RB. Now that his trial will not be until the offseason, the Bucs seem content with making him the workhorse.

RB Marcel Shipp (Ari) - A career-high 165 rushing yards should keep the team from rushing back injured Emmitt Smith. He is clearly the best running back for the Cardinals.

WR Torry Holt (StL) - Over the last three games, he has 22 catches for 402 yards and 5 TDs. There is not a hotter receiver right now.

WR Ike Hilliard (NYG) - As team's double Amani Toomer, Ike Hilliard is making them pay. He caught 9 more passes this week while posting 100 yards and 2 TDs.

WR Steve Smith (Car) - This guy is a no-doubt primary WR. He caught all but 48 of the team's receiving yards yesterday. Over the last three weeks, he leads all receivers with 25 catches.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Dante Hall (KC) - Defenses are putting 8 men in the box to slow Priest Holmes. This opens up teams to the deep threat. Look for the Chiefs to use Dante Hall more and more as a receiver to exploit this fact. He had his coming out party this week with 4 catches for 97 yards and a TD.

WR Santana Moss (NYJ) - He has established himself as the number one receiver for the Jets due to injuries and inconsistent play from Wayne Chrebet and Curtis Conway. With the upgrade at QB with Chad Pennington, Moss could have a huge second half of the season. Over the last three weeks, Santana Moss has caught 14 passes for 223 yards and 3 TDs.

*** Waiver Wire *** WR Dez White (Chi) - He has emerged as the number one receiver for the Bears with a gimpy Marty Booker ineffective in recent weeks.

WR Hines Ward (Pit) - We've been sour on the entire Pittsburgh offense, but that's unfair to Ward. He is getting no help but is turning in an excellent season.

*** Waiver Wire *** TE Itula Mili (Sea) - Of course he has approximately zero more 2-TD games left in him, but Mili should be a viable TE for the remainder of the season.

TE Tony Gonzalez (KC) - No tight end has been hotter than Tony over the last three weeks. He has managed 273 yards on 13 receptions (with 2 TDs) during this span.

TE Billy Miller (Hou) - He finally found the endzone and finished with 37 yards on 4 catches.

Def Dallas - They have allowed just 650 total yards in the last 3 weeks. Even more impressive is holding teams to 317 passing yards over that span. Wow.

Def New England - Over the last three weeks, they have allowed just 22 points to their opponents. If they miss Lawyer Milloy, they are not showing it.

Aberrations

RB Brock Forsey (Chi) - When Anthony Thomas returns, Forsey will disappear.

RB Eddie George (Ten) - He had a couple of 1-yard TD plunges, but his YPC was a mere 3.26. Of course, if the Titans keep scoring 30+ per game, the TD opportunities will be there for George.

RB Arlen Harris (StL) - Harris' three TDs match his standing on the Rams depth chart. Marshall Faulk and Lamar Gordon are expected to return this week.

RB James Jackson (Cle) - Jackson did OK filling in for William Green, but he will not have a huge role when Green comes back.

RB Rudi Johnson (Cin) - Yes, he filled in well for the mercurial Corey Dillon, but Dillon should return as the starting RB next week. That said, if yours is a dynasty league, Johnson may have shown yesterday that he could be the team's 2004 starting RB.

TE Daniel Graham (NE) - The seven catches for 110 yards are either the start of something huge or a blip on a disappointing season. We're betting the latter as there are too many talented WRs on this team (and not enough passing yards to go around) for the TE to have many 100-yard receiving games. That said, Graham is an upgrade if Christian Fauria's ankle keeps him out for awhile.

Downgrades

QB Tim Couch (Chi) - Even though he started again this week, Couch failed to finish his 2nd straight game. This time he left with a strained thumb. As soon as Kelly Holcomb is healthy (the Browns have a bye this week), Couch will head back to the bench.

QB Drew Bledsoe (Buf) - He has just 1 passing TD and 5 interceptions in the last three weeks despite attempting the 4th most pass attempts during this period (100 attempts).

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) - He completed just 12 of 28 passes. His inability to get Plaxico Burress involved in this offense could spell doom for him.

QB Vinny Testaverde (NYJ) - Chad Pennington is back and will start the rest of the way unless injured.

QB Danny Kanell (Den) - H is not the answer even temporarily in Denver.

RB Mike Cloud (NE) - With Kevin Faulk and Antowain Smith healthy again, Cloud rarely sniffs the field.

RB Jamel White (Cle) - William Green misses the game and White ends up with just 2 carries for 4 yards. Over the last 3 weeks, White has just 6 rushes for 13 yards. He has also contributed 61 yards receiving (but no TDs) during this span. Add to this the effective running of James Jackson this week (15 carries for 71 yards) and Jamel White is a drop in all but the largest leagues.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) - Yes, everyone already knew that Dillon is an up-and-down player, but yesterday's episode borders on the absurd. Getting in a car wreck could make you miss the game IF you are hurt. He was not hurt though (just distraught), but ended up on the inactive list based on his phone call to the coach. Combined with his comments of wanting out of Cincinnati earlier in the week, he may find himself splitting time with Rudi Johnson the rest of the way.

RB Antowain Smith (NE) - Smith will have some more games where he gets more than the three carries he had yesterday, but Kevin Faulk is the man in New England.

RB Amos Zereoue (Pit) - He was struggling already and now is not even starting any more. In his last 2 games, he has just 21 rushing yards on 12 carries. Ouch.

RB Kevan Barlow (SF) - He is struggling big time. He had just 19 yards on 9 carries this week. Garrison Hearst appears to be the unquestioned starter right now.

RB Stacey Mack (Hou) - No one has dropped harder and faster than Stacey Mack. He had just 1 carry for 3 yards yesterday as Domanick Davis now is the unquestioned starter in Houston.

RB Troy Hambrick (Dal) - Parcells wanted to run against the Bucs. Hambrick had just 25 yards on 11 carries. Richie Anderson contributed 17 yards on 6 carries and may continue to cut into Hambrick's attempts if Troy does not improve his productivity soon.

RB Fred Taylor (Jac) - With Byron Leftwich at QB, defenses are stacking the line to stop Fred Taylor. Over the last two games, Fred has managed just 83 rushing yards on 25 carries (and no TDs).

WR Muhsin Muhammad (Car) - He gets hurt with regularity and has been passed in this offense by Steve Smith.

WR Ashley Lelie (Den) needs the deep ball to be effective. Denver does not have a healthy QB that can throw that pass effectively at this time.

WR Plaxico Burress (Pit) - He has averaged just 3 catches and 33 receiving yards over his last two games without scoring.

WR Joey Galloway (Dal) - Over the last three weeks, he has just 4 catches for 82 yards and zero TDs.

WR Quincy Morgan (Cle) - He officially qualifies for the bust of the year. Over the last three weeks, he has just 7 receptions for 38 yards and no TDs.

WR Marty Booker (Chi) - Despite catching 100 passes the last two seasons, he might have trouble catching 40 this year as he limps through the season. He has just 16 catches this season.

PK Tim Duncan (Ari) - While he did hit the game winner, he's better with the round ball.

PK Owen Pochman (SF) - He was almost replaced last week so there's no way Pochman will be a 49er another Sunday after single-handedly blowing the game multiple times.

Def Tennessee - All of the hype is on Steve McNair, but lost in all of this has been the fact that the Titans have allowed 949 passing yards over the last 3 weeks.

Def Washington - Over the last two games, Washington has allowed 52 points while recording 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery and 1 sack. Forget the questions about the Spurrier offense, this defense is among the worst in the league.
