Essential News

The Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, and San Drancisco 49ers all are on their bye this week

QB Kurt Kittner (Atl) will be the team's starting QB this weekend according to head coach Dan Reeves. Doug Johnson will back him up.

QB Michael Vick (Atl) is still out with his broken leg and expects to return Week 13 against Houston.

QB Kordell Stewart (Chi) is fully healthy again and has assumed the #2 QB spot over Rex Grossman.

QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) has reclaimed the starting QB position from Tim Couch.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) says his broken foot is healing well, and he is on schedule to return to action after the team's bye week. He expects to play on November 16th against the Chargers.

QB Brett Favre (GB) struggled with his sore thumb in practice this week, but will start as expected.

QB David Carr (Hou) practiced on Thursday and Friday despite his sore ankle and is expected to start this weekend.

QB Mark Brunell (Jac) is still out with his injured elbow, but he will begin throwing this week in practice. Even when healthy, he is expected to back up Byron Leftwich.

QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) says he is working to correct his fumbling problem.

QB Jay Fiedler (Mia) has not practiced all week and should be the team's #3 QB this weekend. Brian Griese will start again as expected.

QB Rich Gannon (Oak) is at least two more weeks away with his injured shoulder. Rick Mirer will start and newly signed Rob Jihnson will back him up. Tee Martin has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster. Marques Tuiasosopo has been lost for the season with an injured knee.

QB Donovan McNabb missed Thursday's practice with the flu, but practiced on Friday. He will start as usual.

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) believes the no-huddle could crank up the Pittsburgh offense. Maddox went 11 or 13 for 142 and a TD in the fourth quarter last week against the Seahawks in this formation.

QB Doug Flutie (SD) has been named the team's starting QB this weekend. Drew Brees will be the backup.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) practiced this week and will start as expected.

FB James Hodgins (Ari) practiced on Thursday and Friday despite a sore ankle and will play this week.

RB Emmitt Smith (Ari) is still out with his injured shoulder but is expected to be healthy in two weeks. Smith says there should be plenty of room in the backfield for two RBs (himself and Marcel Shipp).

RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) is "licking his chops" over a Rams defense that is allowing opposing runners 4.6 yards per carry. He avoided contact Friday, but will start as expected.

RB Chester Taylor (Bal) was added to the injury report with a leg injury, but he practiced on Thursday and will back up Jamal Lewis this weekend.

RB Willis McGahee (Buf) is making great progress in returning from his knee injury and has been activated by the team. However, head coach Gregg Williams said it's too soon to tell when McGahee could be ready to play, if at all this season. He will not play this week.

RB Stephen Davis (Car) did not practice all week with his high ankle sprain and is a game-time decision. We expect him to play, but will split time with DeShaun Foster.

RB Adrian Peterson (Chi) is out for this weekend's game. Brock Forsey will be the team's #2 RB while Rabih Abdullah will see some 3rd down action. Anthony Thomas will start as usual.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) has been downgraded to doubtful and is not expected to play. Rudi Johnson will start and Brandon Bennett will back him up.

RB William Green (Cle) will not play this weekend. He has been suspended by the team for one game for his recent arrest for DUI and marijuana charges.

RB Lee Suggs (Cle) is on the reserve-non football injury list while recovering from shoulder surgery in the spring. He has been practicing and he could be active this weekend.

FB Richie Anderson (Dal) practiced despite his sore back on Friday and should play this weekend.

RB Artose Pinner (Det) practiced for the first time on Wednesday. The Lions have three weeks to activate Pinner, release him, or add him to the injured reserve list.

RB Domanick Davis (Hou) practiced this week and will start as expected. Stacey Mack will back him up.

RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) practiced this week despite a sore knee and will back up Edgerrin James this weekend. Ricky Williams was able to practice despite a sore ankle and is also available.

RB Fred Taylor (Jac) has a message for Colts S Mike Doss: "I'm going to punish (Doss). I'm going to bust his (butt)." Taylor claims Doss pushed his head to the ground in the first Jaguars / Colts meeting this season.

RB Larry Johnson (KC) has moved past Derrick Blaylock and is now the team's #2 RB.

FB Rob Konrad (Mia) practiced this week and will play as usual.

RB Ricky Williams (Mia) practiced on Thursday and Friday and will start this weekend as expected.

RB Michael Bennett (Min) is expected to see a bigger workload this weekend.

RB Brian Westbrook (Phi) did not practice with the team this week. He was able to do some running, but does not expect to play this week. Correll Buckhalter will start again with relief from Duce Staley.

RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday after having a wisdom tooth pulled. He returned to practice on Friday and will start as expected.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) has been named the team's starting RB this weekend. Head coach Mike Martz says that Faulk will be spelled by Arlen Harris. The amount of action that Faulk receives will be mostly based on his conditioning. Lamar Gordon was able to practice on Friday, but is available in an emergency situation only.

FB Mike Alstott (TB) underwent surgery to repair the herniated disc in his neck. He hopes to have a full recovery and play next season.

RB Michael Pittman (TB) practiced this week and will start as expected.

RB Chris Brown (Ten) practiced this week and is available this weekend.

RB Ladell Betts (Was) is not expected to play this week after missing practices all week.

RB Trung Canidate (Was) is expected to start this weekend despite a very tender ankle. Newly signed RB John Simon and FB Rock Cartwright will back him up. Rookie Sultan McCullough is also available, but after missing many key blocks resulting in Ramsey pressure, he may not see much action.

RB Jamal Anderson (FA) worked out for the Buccaneers, but no contract was offered by the team.

WR Bryan Gilmore (Ari) has signed a 2-year extension with the team.

WR Jason McAddley (Ari) is still out with his injured hamstring.

WR Frank Sanders (Bal) did not practice on Friday and has been named a game-time decision.

WR Travis Taylor (Bal) was added to the injury report as probable with a leg injury but will start as expected this week.

WR Eric Moulds (Buf) was given the day off and rested on Friday. There was no setback and he will start this weekend as expected. He is near 100%.

WR Kevin Dyson (Car) practiced this week. There is a slight possibility that Dyson could see action this weekend, but he is more likely to make his Panthers debut in week eleven.

WR Marty Booker (Chi) practiced this week and will start opposite of Dez White.

WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Cin) had his best week of practice since September, but he will not play this weekend.

WR Kevin Johnson (Cle) has lost his starting position to Andre Davis.

WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) could possibly miss the remainder of the season as his quadriceps injury is not improving. He is on a bye this week.

WR Charles Rogers (Det) is still out with his broken collarbone.

WR Bill Schroeder (Det) was limited in practice with a leg injury. He is a game-time decision.

WR Antonio Freeman (GB) praticed on Thursday and Friday. He should play this weekend.

WR Javon Walker (GB) has played well recently and is essentially the #2 WR behind Donald Driver.

WR Brandon Stokley (Ind) practiced on Friday, but missed early sessions due to his concussion. He is a game-time decision.

WR Troy Walters (Ind) practiced on Wednesday and Thursday and should play this weekend.

WR Derrius Thompson (Mia) practiced this week and should play this weekend despite his injured groin.

WR D'Wayne Bates (Min) had a great week of practice and will start opposite of Randy Moss. Nate Burleson and Kelly Campbell will also see action.

WR David Patten (NE) underwent knee surgery Wednesday. He has been placed on the injured reserve list and is lost for the remainder of the season.

WR Tim Brown (Oak) has asked his teammates to stop their off field bickering and concentrate on football. It looks like mutiny is in the works in Oakland.

WR Wayne Chrebet (NYJ) will not play this weekend due to his concussion. Kevin Swayne will be the team's #3 WR this weekend with Wayne sidelined.

WR Jerry Porter (Oak) practiced this week and will start opposite of Jerry Rice. Tim Brown will also see significant work as the team runs three wide sets often.

WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) practiced on Friday despite a sore quadricep and is expected to start this weekend opposite of James Thrash.

WR Plaxico Burress (Pit) practiced on Friday and expects to play this weekend despite his injured shoulder.

WR Hines Ward (Pit) practiced on Wednesday despite having pink eye. He will start as expected.

WR Reche Caldwell (SD) practiced this week and will start opposite of David Boston. Eric Parker is out for the season with a dislocated shoulder. Micah Ross was signed to fill Parker's roster spot.

WR Brandon Lloyd (SF) may see a little more action over the last seven weeks. Terrell Owens and Tai Streets will be free agents at the end of the season, and the 49ers will need to decide if Lloyd is capable of handling an increased role in the 2004 season.

WR Koren Robinson (Sea) did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday, but was able to go on Friday. Head coach Mike Holmgren is optimistic that Robinson will start this weekend. He is a game-time decision with a very tender ankle.

WR Joe Jurevicius (TB) practiced early in the week, but rested Friday. He is expected to play this weekend.

WR Drew Bennett (Ten) is out with his injured calf.

TE Brian Kozlowski (Atl) practiced this week and is available to play this weekend.

TE Mike Seidman (Car) practiced on Friday and has been upgraded to probable.

TE Reggie Kelly (Cin) is out with a broken bone in his foot.

TE James Whalen (Dal) practiced on Friday and should play this weekend.

TE Bubba Franks (GB) practiced on Friday after skipping Thursday's session. He is expected to start this week with his sore quadricep.

TE Wesley Walls (GB) did not practice on Wednesday but did practice on Thursday and Friday. He will back up Bubba Franks this week.

TE Dallas Clark (Ind) practiced this week and is expected to play with his recovering hamstring. Marcus Pollard will start.

TE Jim Kleinsasser (Min) will be given a bigger role in the team's offense according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) did not practice on Wednesday (as has become the norm) but will start as expected.

TE Jay Riemersma (Pit) practiced this week and will start.

TE Stephen Alexander (SD) is listed as questionable with his injured groin. He was able to make it through Wednesday, Thursday and Friday practices, but he is still expected to sit this week.

TE Cameron Cleeland (StL) practiced this week and should play this weekend.

PK Bill Gramatica (Ari) is still out with his injured back.

PK Jason Elam (Den) suffered a groin injury while attempting a FG last Monday. He hopes to be able to kick after the team's bye week. As evidence, Denver has not brought in any free agent PKs.

PK Matt Bryant (NYG) is still out with his injured hamstring.
