Ultimate Recap

Essential News

The Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers are all on their bye this week.

QB Michael Vick (Atl) is still out with his broken leg. He is still on target to play the first game in November, but that time table could change if the Falcons continue to lose.

QB Tim Couch (Cle) will continue to start for the Browns. Kelly Holcomb is expected to be out until November 9th. There has not been any discussion as to whether Couch will remain the starter, but performance on the field tells us that Holcomb should practice carrying the clipboard while rehabbing.

QB Jake Plummer (Den) reaggravated his (throwing) shoulder injury last Sunday. He was able to practice on a limited basis on Thursday and Friday (He did not attempt a pass over 20 yards). Mike Shanahan, talking in his usual cryptic methods, stated that unless there is a setback, Plummer will be ready to go. But Steve Beurlein took the majority of the first team snaps all week in practice. We think this is a situation to avoid unless you have to play one of them. Because the game is at 4pm ET, we aren't likely going to be able to give you much new info before the early games start. If you made us make a call here (and that's what you pay us for), we'd say it's about a 65% chance that Beuerlein starts with Plummer as the backup.

QB Joey Harrington (Det) will start despite a bruised throwing shoulder. He practiced through the pain this week.

QB Byron Leftwich (Jac) has been named the team's starting QB for the remainder of the season. This has to be the most underwhelming announcement in Jaguars history. Head coach Jack Del Rio has wanted to make this move for some time, but he seemed hesitant to bench the veteran Mark Brunell. The injury to Brunell gave the team the perfect situation. If Leftwich bombed, Brunell would return. Since Leftwich performed well, he remains the starting QB.

QB Daunte Culpepper (Min) practiced fully on Friday and will be ready to start when the team returns from their bye.

QB Chad Pennington (NYJ) practiced on Wednesday and Thursday and even took some practice snaps with the scout team on Friday. The team expects him to participate in the team sessions beginning next week. Barring any setbacks, there is a decent chance that he could get some action in the week seven contest against the Texans.

QB Donovan McNabb (Phi) is still bothered by his bruised leg, but he will start as usual this weekend.

QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) has to work through a confidence problem according to head coach Bill Cowher.

QB Jeff Garcia (SF) missed practice on Thursday, but returned Friday despite a bruised arm. He will start as expected.

QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) is still having trouble with a sprain in his non-throwing shoulder. However, he practiced fine this week and will start as usual.

RB Marcel Shipp (Ari) is now the team's starting RB with the injury to Emmitt Smith. Emmitt will mis 4-6 weeks.

RB Jamal Lewis (Bal) will be rested often this weekend to handle the Arizona heat. Chester Taylor is expected extra reps this week.

RB Lee Suggs (Bal) is eligible to come off the reserve/non-football injury list and is eager to begin practicing with the team.

RB Travis Henry (Buf) is still suffering from his rib injury, but will start as expected this week.

RB Willis McGahee (Buf) will begin practicing with the team on October 15th.

RB Sammy Morris (Buf) is still out recovering from hernia surgery.

RB Corey Dillon (Cin) was held out of last weekend's game with the intent of him being fully healthy after the team's bye week.

RB Stacey Mack (Hou) is very bothered by his turf toe. He will play this weekend, but Domanick Davis will get a great deal of carries as well. Tony Hollings will also be active and available if Mack's injuries limit him further.

RB Edgerrin James (Ind) missed Friday's practice with flu symptoms. He was able to practice Wednesday and Thursday with his sore back though. The team is expected to make a decision on his status right before game time.

RB James Mungro and Dominic Rhodes (Ind) were able to practice on Friday and are available if the team needs them

RB Ricky Williams (Ind) will start if Edgerrin James doesn't play this weekend.

RB Michael Bennett (Min) jogged on Thursday and is expected to return to practice on Monday. The team is targeting the November 2nd game for his possible return.

RB Mike Cloud (NE) is expected to start for the team this weekend. Kevin Faulk has improved enough that he is also expected to play. Antowain Smith is expected to sit this week.

RB Ron Dayne (NYG) is rumored to be on the trading block.

RB LaMont Jordan (NYJ) did not practice Wednesday due to the flu. He should be able to play this weekend after practicing on Thursday and Friday.

RB Tyrone Wheatley (Oak) practiced late in the week and is expected to play this weekend.

RB Correll Buckhalter (Phi) practiced this week and will play this weekend despite his injured knee.

RB Brian Westbrook (Phi) is expected to play less on special teams and more in the regular offense in the coming weeks.

RB Garrison Hearst (SF) practiced this week and will start as expected.

RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) rested his ankle on Wednesday but is expected to start as usual.

RB Marshall Faulk (StL) is still out with his injured hand.

RB Lamar Gordon (StL) practiced on Friday and is expected to start on Monday. He will be backed up by Arlen Harris.

RB Mike Alstott (TB) has been lost for this season after being placed on the injured reserve list with a neck injury. One player will not replace him as he was the team's RB-of-all-trades. However, look for an increased role for starting RB Michael Pittman as he will be expected to handle the goal line work. Jameel Cook will now start at FB. Aaron Stecker should see a little more action as well. Thomas Jones could even be pulled away from the Gatorade for a play or two.

RB Aaron Stecker (TB) was able to practice on Friday despite his knee injury.

RB Eddie George (Ten) describes his performance this season as "disgusting".

WR Bryan Gilmore (Ari) will start this weekend in place of the injured Bryant Johnson.

WR Bryant Johnson (Ari) will miss this weekend's game with his injured hamstring.

WR Kevin Kasper (Ari) is expected to return to action for this weekend's game.

WR Jason McAddley (Ari) will miss another week with his hamstring injury.

WR Brian Finneran (Atl) will play wearing a protective brace on his hand for the Monday Night game.

WR Peerless Price (Atl) was upgraded to questionable and practiced on Friday. He is expected to start.

WR Ron Johnson (Bal) is out with a knee injury.

WR Eric Moulds (Buf) was unable to practice Friday but head coach Gregg Williams would not officially rule him out for Sunday's game against the New York Jets. "We will work him out Sunday morning," said Williams. "He's a remarkable athlete on what he's been able to do. Would I play him if he could go? Yes." We're not optimistic here about his chances but as Williams said, it will come down to Sunday morning for a decision.

WR Steve Smith (Car) broke his pinkie (for the third time this year) in Wednesday's practice.

WR Marty Booker (Chi) practiced this week despite his injured ribs and is expected to play this weekend.

WR Quincy Morgan (Cle) lightly sprained his knee in last Sunday's game, but will play this week as usual.

WR Ed McCaffrey (Den) practiced on Wednesday and is expected to play this weekend.

WR Charles Rogers (Det) broke his collarbone during Tuesday's practice. He is expected to miss the next 4-8 weeks.

WR Andre Johnson (Hou) returned to practice on Monday and should play this weekend. Johnson had surgery to remove a toe nail during the team's bye week.

WR Deion Branch (NE) practice on Friday and should be able to play this weekend.

WR David Givens (NE) was able to practice on Thursday and Friday, but his status for this weekend is not fully known.

WR David Patten (NE) practiced on Thursday and Friday and should play this weekend.

WR Jerry Porter (Oak) participated in individual drills on Wednesday but will likely miss another week as he recovers from hernia surgery. He should be able to return for the October 20th Monday night game.

WR Eric Parker (SD) received good news as the MRI on his injured shoulder came back negative. He did not practice on Tuesday but should be able to play after the team's bye week.

WR Terrell Owens (SF) rested his Achilles on Wednesday but is expected to play this weekend.

WR Kevin Curtis (StL) partially participated in Monday's practice but will not play this weekend.

WR Shaun McDonald (StL) will return to the field this week.

WR Marvin Minnis (TB) has been released by the Bucs.

WR Karl Williams (TB) has been upgraded to probable after practicing on Thursday and Friday and will play this weekend.

TE Todd Heap (Bal) practiced this week and will play this weekend despite his shoulder injury.

TE Aaron Shea (Cle) has been lost for the season after being placed on the injured reserve list. His spot on the roster will be taken by Zeron Flemister who the team claimed off waivers from the Redskins.

TE James Whalen & Jason Witten (Dal) will both likely miss this weekend's game. The team has signed Tony McGee in order to have enough TEs to play this Sunday.

TE Shannon Sharpe (Den) has a bruised knee, but he was able to practice this week and is expected to start as usual this weekend.

TE Daniel Graham (NE) practiced on Thursday and Friday and is expected to play this weekend.

TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) partially participated in Friday's session in order to rest his foot. He will start this weekend.

TE Jay Riemersma (Pit) was able to practice on Thursday and Friday and will start as usual.

TE Josh Norman (SD) is expected to be ready to play on October 19th when the team returns from their bye week.

TE Shad Meier (Ten) suffered a concussion last Sunday and missed practice on Wednesday with a headache. He expects to play this weekend after practicing on Thursday and Friday after getting the green light from team doctors.
