The Buffalo/Miami outcome was still very much in doubt with about two minutes
left in the game. Miami had the ball on their own 23-yard line. Miami was down
35-32. On a first down play, AJ Feeley's pass somehow ended up in the hands
of Bills DT Pat Williams, who lumbered his way for the 20-yard score. Buffalo
won 42-32. It was the first interception in Williams' eight-year career
Miami LB Zach Thomas is expected to miss this Sunday's game against Denver.
Despite missing almost two complete games due to injury, Thomas is still second
in the NFL in tackles
Colts LB Rob Morris had 7-3 tackles and a sack in Indy's 51-24 pummeling of
the Titans. But he felt best about his blocked field goal in the second quarter
that resulted in a 68-yard return for a touchdown. Morris later said that LB
David Thornton was bugging him the whole way down trying to talk him into pitching
the ball
Morris said it was his first touchdown since his junior year at BYU
Colts DE Dwight Freeney also had a nice game with 4-0 tackles and three sacks.
He now has ten sacks on the year
The New England Patriots are 11-1, due in no small part to the play of their
defense. But as much as I look to discuss remarkable player stats or game breaking
plays for them, it just seems as though no one individual stands out. This is
truly a team defense
Cleveland safety Chris Crocker, who won the starting job last month, will miss
at least the next game with bruised biceps. It was first feared to be torn but
they are now optimistic he'll be back within a game or two
The Chicago Bears are 5-3 this season when Brian Urlacher plays, including
four straight wins. They're 0-4 when he doesn't. Coincidence?
The Bears beat Minnesota Sunday 24-14. Urlacher had 6-1 tackles, a sack and
an interception. His interception was his biggest play, as the Vikings were
about to score from the three-yard line. Urlacher caught the pass and returned
it 42 yards. It was Urlacher's first interception in over two years
Up until this season, Urlacher had never missed a game due to injury. But in
the very first hour of the very first training camp session, Urlacher suffered
a hamstring injury severe enough to cause him to miss the entire preseason.
He came back to play the first two games of the year, but when the hammy tightened
up he missed the next two games, ending his consecutive start streak at 64 games
Urlacher came back to play the following five games, but after a win over the
Titans, Urlacher noticed his bruised calf was swelling to bizarre levels. He
went to the ER after he got home, later describing the swelling to be the size
of a grapefruit
The ER doctors could not find a pulse in Urlacher's foot and performed an emergency
operation to relieve the swelling. He was hospitalized for a week for fear of
infection, and Urlacher later said he was told that he could have lost the foot
if he had not been treated
Vikings star DT Kevin Williams continues his terrific play, as he had 6-1 tackles
and a pair of sacks in their loss to the Bears. Williams now has nine sacks
on the year, after having over ten last year. Having him on your squad (especially
for those that must start a DT) is a huge asset, as his stats compare favorably
over DE's and he currently leads DT's in scoring in just about every IDP league
Bengal's B Brian Simmons had a very workmanlike 10-2 tackles in their 27-26
win over the Ravens. Simmons is a top 20 LB in most IDP leagues and a sure starter
if on your team
Ravens safety Will Demp had the most productive game of his career with 13-1
tackles
Bucs LB Derrick Brooks helped set the tone against Michael Vick and the Atlanta
Falcons Sunday in their 27-0 win. Brooks chased Vick all over the field and
finished the game with 8-3 tackles. He sacked Vick twice, causing a fumble on
one of them that led to a field goal. He also tipped a pass that led to an interception
by Dwight Smith in the end zone
The sacks by Brooks was the first time in his career he had a multiple sack
game, and his tackle numbers for the season are on par with the best he's had
since the 2000 season
DE Simeon Rice added a pair of sacks to give him eight for the year. He also
became only the 22nd player ever to have 100 career sacks. Up until now, it
has been somewhat of a disappointing season for Rice, not only with the team's
record but with his output of tackles and sacks
Falcon's DE Patrick Kerney continues to show that he's a much better performer
with DT Rod Coleman in the game than without. Sunday, Kerney had 4-3 tackles
and 1.5 sacks. Since Coleman's return to the lineup four games ago, Kerney has
three sacks. For the year, that makes ten sacks in nine games with Coleman and
zero sacks in the three games without him
Rams DE Leonard Little had an abysmal start to the season. After their first
two games, Little had 0-1 tackles and no sacks. Since then, Little has six sacks
and 30-4 tackles. In Sunday's 16-6 win over the 49ers, Little had 7-1 tackles
and a sack
Rams LB Tommy Polley, who has struggled much of the year, had a big game. He
helped hold TE Eric Johnson to 2/15/0 and added 8-0 tackles, seemingly from
everywhere on the field
It's been noted elsewhere here at FBG's, but Jets DE John Abraham is week to
week with a sprained ligament in his right knee. At best, he misses just this
week's game against Pittsburgh
Houston LB Jay Foreman, already in the middle of a down year, injured his ankle
Sunday and will not play for the rest of the year
There was a Mike Rucker sighting at the Carolina/Saints game on Sunday. The
Panther DE had been missing, at least in the sack column, all year long. In
Sunday's 32-21 win, Rucker finally had his first full sack of the year at the
end of the first quarter. Rucker had 31 sacks in the previous three seasons
Chargers LB Donnie Edwards had a monster game Sunday in their 20-17 win over
Denver, as he ended with 14-6 tackles. Edwards now has eight consecutive seasons
with 100+ total tackles. In short, Edwards is a tackling machine
Denver rookie LB DJ Williams, while not quite the tackling machine Edwards,
is having a very solid rookie campaign and had his best tackling numbers as
a pro with 9-3
Raiders CB Charles Woodson only has one interception this year, which he got
in the 34-27 loss to the Chiefs. But Woodson is having a career year for tackles.
He added 12-1 on Sunday
The Packers might be regretting trading their top cover man, Mike McKenzie,
to the Saints earlier in the season. The Packers have been going with a very
young secondary, with rookie Ahmad Carroll starting and Joey Thomas coming off
the bench. They are ranked 30th in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game
and they have given up 28 passing TD's on the season. That's 10 more than they
gave up all last season
One week after the Packers gave an a franchise-record 448 passing yards to
the Rams, the Packers outdid themselves by allowing the Eagles to toss 464 yards
and five touchdowns
Week in and week out, Steeler LB James Farrior and Jaguar LB Mike Peterson
have played tremendously and are among IDP scoring leaders for linebackers.
If you saw the Sunday night game between their two teams, you can see why, as
both players hustle on every play
Farrior had 8-0 tackles and Peterson had 8-1 in what can best be described
as typical games for them both
Cowboys DT La'Roi Glover had arguably his best game of the season with 3-3
tackles and two sacks. But anytime the score is 43-39, as it was in the Cowboys
win over Seattle Sunday night, it's hard to give too much credit to the defense
Until next week
