As the season winds down, many IDP owners are in leagues where FA acquisitions
or trades are no longer permitted. But those of you dynasty/keeper owners need
to keep a watchful eye on what happens in these last couple weeks and in the
playoffs. Many an IDP play will have a large impact on where and how much they
play next season. It would be a mistake to zone out now simply because you may
not be in the playoffs. Keeping on eye on the prize for next season will give
you a much needed head start in the coming months. Best of luck to all of you
in FF championships
The Green Bay Packers beat Minnesota last in a wonderful game, 34-31. But all
the news this week out of Green Bay revolves around the sudden passing of legendary
DE Reggie White at the early age of 43. One of the best defensive ends in history
had died at least in part because of a respiratory disease that affected the
amount of air his lungs could hold. The report also said sleep apnea might have
been a factor
White retired from the NFL in 2000. Packers President Bob Harlan and HC Mike
Sherman spoke last Friday about firming up a date to retire White's jersey number.
Only four Packers have had their numbers retired and White was informed last
year that Harlan was going to break his long standing policy of not retiring
more numbers
White, an ordained minister who used football to promote his religious beliefs,
earned 13 consecutive Pro Bowl selections and was twice named defensive player
of the year. When he finally retired in 2000, White held the all-time sack record
(198) and produced double digit sacks in 12 of his 15 seasons
Although White only played six of his fifteen years in the NFL for Green Bay,
he will always be remembered as a Packer. He will be sorely missed
Chiefs rookie DE Jared Allen got his ninth sack of the year in a 31-30 win
over the Raiders. He had another sack called back when CB Benny Sapp was called
for defensive holding. Allen is just one sack away from the rookie franchise
record held by Derrick Thomas
A lot of people, including myself, expected big things out of Raider DE Tyler
Brayton this year. Although his play has not been terrible, his stats sure have
been. A bust in my book
Broncos LB DJ Williams is making a strong case for defensive rookie of the
year honors. In their 37-16 win over the Titans, Williams had 6-6 tackles and
an interception
Williams' teammate, DE Reggie Hayward, also had a nice game. He had a career-high
three sacks, giving him 9.5 for the season
Colts DE Dwight Freeney is finishing his season with a flurry. In their 34-31
OT win over the Chargers, Freeney added another sack to his league-leading total.
He now has 16 for the year and 9 in his last four games. His 16 sacks set a
club record
Chargers LB Donnie Edwards seems to make big plays every week, albeit in a
loss this time. Edwards got another interception Sunday. It was his fifth in
the last five games. He added 5-4 tackles
Edwards teammate, LB Steve Foley, never had more than four sacks in any of
his previous six NFL seasons. With three sacks Sunday, Foley now has ten on
the year
There's no slowing down Pittsburgh Steeler LB James Farrior this year. In Sunday's
20-7 win over the Ravens, Farrior had 10-0 tackles
With 20 total tackles and three sacks in the last three games, Jaguar DT John
Henderson is ending the season with a bang. In Sunday's 21-0 loss to Houston,
Henderson had two sacks and now has 6.5 for the year thus far, tying a career
best
Teammate Mike Peterson, a LB, also got a sack, giving him a career best five
for the season
Despite not starting the first two games of the season and only getting four
total tackles in that span, Jets LB Jonathan Vilma, with 7-4 tackles in a loss
to New England Sunday, broke the 100-tackle barrier on the season. He also added
his second sack of the year. If you don't own him already in your dynasty league,
he'll be a tough buy for you. But if his owner is not aware of his long-term
value, which is extremely high, scoop him up if you can in a trade
Dallas Cowboy veteran safety Darren Woodson, who has missed the entire season
due to a herniated disc, appears headed for retirement at the age of 35, with
the announcement coming as early as this week. Woodson was injured just prior
to the opening of training camp. His recovery was delayed indefinitely when
it was found Woodson had a nerve problem between his spine and his legs
Woodson has played his entire career with the Cowboys. He is a five-time Pro
Bowl selection and is the Cowboys all-time leading tackler. He is also the last
remaining player from the Cowboys three Super Bowl team in the 90's
Washington CB Fred Smoot took a friendly fire hit during a scrum after a fumble
during the 13-10 loss to Dallas. Teammate S Sean Taylor is the one who it Smoot,
bruising his side and kidney. Smoot is receiving ongoing treatment after staying
overnight in Dallas. Smoot threw up after the hit. Just thought I'd add that
last little tidbit
Carolina Panther DT Kindal Moorehead's interception and 17-yard touchdown return
in the fourth quarter sealed the 37-20 win over Tampa Bay Sunday. It was Moorehead's
first career touchdown
Panther LN Dan Morgan appears back to form after getting 9-3 tackles. Morgan
has missed four complete games this year due to injury
Seattle DE Chike Okeafor had a big game in Sunday's 24-21 defeat of Arizona.
Okeafor had 9-0 tackles and a couple of timely sacks ending Cardinal drives.
Some might say it's about time, as Okeafor had been somewhat disappointing in
the last five weeks or so. After starting the season strong with 5.5 sacks in
the first six games, Okeafor had only one sack in the following eight games
prior to Sunday
Despite getting 7-3 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and breaking up three
passes, Seahawk safety Ken Hamlin was mostly disappointed because he dropped
two potential interceptions
All I can is "wow" after seeing Zach Thomas return to the Miami Dolphins
after missing almost four complete games with injury. In Miami's 10-7 win over
Cleveland, Thomas was all over the field, ending up with 9-9 tackles. Thomas
is fifth in the league in total tackles. That's remarkable considering how many
games he's missed
Until next week
