The biggest upset of the week had to be the Bears beating the Packers 21-10
in Lambeau Field. Mike Green had a big game with 9 tackles, but it was another
safety named Mike, team captain Mike Brown, who had the biggest play that game.
Brown's 95-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter gave the
Bears an 11-point lead, a lead they would never lose. It was Brian Urlacher
who stripped the ball from GB RB Ahman Green, and Brown was in the right place
at the right time. It was Brown's 5th defensive score for the Bears, a team
record
Brown's 95 fumble return was the second longest in Bear's history. The longest?
Legendary George Halas, the team founder, had a 98-yard return in 1923
Brown has played in every game of his Bear's career. That streak will end,
as Brown hurt his right Achilles' tendon in the closing minutes and is expected
to be out for the season
With key defensive players Boss Bailey and Dre Bly out with injuries, the Detroit
Lions have had to rely on other players on their way to a startling 2-0 start.
One of those players is DE James Hall. Hall's previous yearly high sack number
was 4.5. After two games this year Hall already has 3.5, including 2 in their
win over Houston yesterday
Steeler safety Troy Polamalu finally had a big day statistically, with 8 solo
and 3 assisted tackles. But it was in a losing effort against the Baltimore
Ravens
Baltimore's defense gave up 310 yards and 16 first downs, but it was their
ability to make big plays that made the difference for the Raven's D. They had
sacks from two different safeties, a cornerback and a linebacker to help disrupt
any progress the Steelers offense could make. An interception by All-Pro corner
Chris McAlister followed by his 51-yard scamper for a score finally closed things
out for Baltimore late in the 4th
Deion Sanders' return to the NFL took an abrupt halt as the Raven dime corner
left the game late in the first half with a hamstring injury. No news as of
this writing on when he'll return
Atlanta Falcon DE Brady Smith made the big play Sunday against the Rams as
he stripped the ball out of QB Marc Bulger's hands in the Rams endzone near
the beginning of the 4th quarter. After causing the fumble, Smith actually caught
it in midair for the TD to seal the victory for the Falcons. A strange play,
to say the least. On the play, Smith was credited with a sack, a forced fumble,
a recovered fumble and a TD
Brady Smith's counterpart on the other side, Patrick Kerney, had another big
game, with 2 sacks and 4 tackle. Kerney now has at least one tackle in 74 consecutive
games
Indy CB Nick Harper's interception in the early parts of the 4th quarter helped
seal the victory for the Colts against their divisional rival Titans. Harper
added 5 tackles and an assist
For those who still think that the Indy WLB is the predominant tackling position
for the Colts, they need to look again. So far, SLB David Thornton is showing
that, despite his move from the weak side to the strong side, he can still produce
big fantasy numbers. Thornton had 9-3 to Cato June's 5-4
Dwight Freeney had another sack this week. In the not-relevant-at-all fact
department, the Colts are now 14-6 in games when Freeney has registered a sack
Giant QB Kurt Warner might have rung up his first victory in a long time, but
it was the Giants defense that should get the most credit. With the score tied
at 7, Giant safety Shaun Williams knocked the ball loose from Skins RB Clinton
Portis. Giant LB Barrett Green scooped the ball up and returned the ball 16
yards for a TD to put the Giants up by 7. Overall, the Giants had 3 forced fumbles
and 4 INTs
DT Fred Robbins had perhaps his most spectacular play of his career with a
tipped pass that became an incredible interception. A Giant FG immediately followed
and gave the Giants a lead they never relinquished
Robbins started things off for the Giants with a sack and a forced fumble recovered
by DE Michael Strahan. On the very next play, Warner connected on a 38 yard
TD pass to tie the game. Robbins ended up with 2 sacks, 3 tackles, a forced
fumble and an INT. He equaled his season high sack total with 2
Star 49er safety Tony Parrish started his 98th straight game in their loss
against the Saints
SS Jay Bellamy got the game ball for the Saints, as he contributed 10-1 with
a forced fumble and a recovered fumble. Bellamy has proven to a very solid FF
performer over his career
Ultra-talented Panther DE Julius Peppers had a disappointing season last year
with only 37-7 and 7 sacks. He's off to a good start this season and had 2 sacks
in their win over the Chiefs Sunday
Chief's LB Monty Beisel is looking like a FF gem after his first two professional
starts. Beisel won the starting nod after Kawika Mitchell and Mike Maslowski
both got hurt prior to the season. Beisel now has 20 total tackles and an INT
after two games
Jaguar OLB Akin Ayodele recovered Quentin Griffin's fumble at Jacksonville's
23-yard line to wrap up the victory for the defensive minded 2-0 Jaguars. Ayodele
also had 5 tackles in the game
Rookie safety Michael Boulware intercepted Chris Simms' pass in the closing
minutes to end the Tampa Bay rally in the Seahawks 10-6 win. CB Marcus Trufant
had another inception earlier on in the game, followed by a 41-yard return that
helped set up a TD for Seattle. Trufant also had 7 tackles and an assist
Cowboy DE Greg Ellis led a Dallas defense that helped shut down Jeff Garcia
by keeping the pressure on him in their win over the Browns. Ellis had a sack,
4 tackles and an assist, but mainly led to the harassment of Garcia, who threw
3 INTs
Just last week in this column I wrote about Jet LB Sam Cowart and how good
he looked in their season opener, as it was previously widely speculated to
be a matter of time before Jonathan Vilma took over for Cowart. That all changed
in the first half of the Jets win over the San Diego Chargers Sunday when Cowart
got hurt. It was revealed on Tuesday that Cowart sprained his MCL in his left
knee and would be out 4-6 weeks. Vilma will start in Cowart's place when they
return from their bye week on October 3rd
The Oakland Raiders sacked Bills QB Drew Bledsoe seven times en route to their
win on Sunday. LB/DE DeLawrence Grant led the way with 2 sacks. ILB Danny Clark,
getting more time due to the injured Napoleon Harris, added a sack and 11 total
tackles. DE Tyler Brayton continues to play well, posting another 1.5 sacks
along with 7 total tackles
Cardinals QB Josh McCown also fell victim to the sack, as he was sacked five
times, all in the first half, against the Patriots. Rodney Harrison and Willie
McGinest each recorded 2 sacks. When McCown was able to get the throw off in
time, he found himself in more trouble. McCown threw two INTs, both to Patriot
safety Eugene Wilson
Bengal LB Brian Simmons is still a little banged up right now, but he still
found the ability to contribute in Cincinnati's win over the offense-less Miami
Dolphins Sunday. Simmons alone had as many TDs as the Miami offense when he
returned a 3rd quarter interception 50 yards for the score. Simmons added 4-4
tackles in his first start of the year
After an impressive second year, many believed Simmons was on his way to a
tremendous career. Although he remains an effective, productive player, Simmons
has yet to reach the status many placed upon him earlier in his previous six
seasons
I'll say it again, I believe Zach Thomas is on his way to his best statistical
season in the NFL. He was already a top 10 FF performer at LB the last few years.
I'd be very happy if I owned Thomas right now. Unless, of course, Thomas has
lingering effects of a concussion. The Palm Beach post wrote that Thomas believes
he might have suffered a concussion during the game
You couldn't tell it by looking at the total yards produced by the Viking offense,
but the Eagles defense did what was necessary to beat Minnesota Sunday. CB Sheldon
Brown led the way with 9-4 and added a sack. The Eagles defense stopped the
run and took away the dangerous Viking vertical passing game
That was a great hit by Eagle safety Michael Lewis on Daunte Culpepper in the
first half, preventing Culpepper from scoring. Lewis is looking more and more
like one of the best safeties in the game
I still can't believe the Bears beat the Packers in Lambeau Field
Until next week
