Before the Browns/Bengals game Sunday, Bengal WR Chad Johnson sent the Cleveland
defensive backs bottles of Pepto Bismol, stating that they would get sick trying
to cover him. But it was Johnson who didn't fare too well in the Browns 34-17
win. Johnson only went 3/37/0. Browns safety Earl Little reportedly told Johnson
during the game, "Hey, I'm going to FedEx that stuff back to you, because
you really need it"
Tony Grossi, a reporter from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, wrote, "the Cincinnati
receiver should have sent care packages of Milk of Magnesia instead of Pepto-Bismol.
His team cured the Browns of acute offensive constipation"
Brown CB Anthony Henry covered Johnson much of the game, and played much better
than he did after making several mistakes against Pittsburgh the previous week.
It didn't hurt that Johnson had at least three dropped balls
The Washington Redskins are looking forward to this week's bye, especially
on the defensive side. When they play Green Bay on October 31st, they might
see the return of LB Lavar Arrington (knee surgery), DE Philip Daniels (groin),
and LB Mike Barrow (knee tendonitis). Safety Andre Lott should also be ready
for the field from his hamstring problems
Even without those players, though, the Redskins defense has been tough. They
have given up only six touchdowns all season, and none against the Bears. They
held Chicago to only 160 total yards on offense
On the last series of the game, when the Bears could have tied or won the game,
the Redskins defense produced two sacks and an interception. On first and second
down, DT Cornelius Griffin sacked Bears QB Jonathan Quinn. They were Griffin's
first two sacks on the year. On fourth down, safety Sean Taylor got an interception.
Game over
About the only good news for the Bears was the return of All-Pro LB Brian Urlacher.
Urlacher had 9-3 tackles and a sack
Buffalo LB Takeo Spikes made a promise to Bills fans last week that Sunday's
game would provide good news. It did. Spikes' interception and 11-yard touchdown
returned was the first score of the game and helped spark the Bills to a 20-13
win over the Miami Dolphins
The Bills sacked Miami QB Jay Fiedler five times. DE Aaron Schobel paced the
way with two and a half sacks. Fellow lineman Ron Edwards also had two sacks
and helped limit the Dolphins to just 212 yards of total offense
My Zach Thomas watch continues. He had 8-6 tackles Sunday and leads the NFL
with 71 total tackles. The next closest competitor has 55 total tackles. You'd
think I'd own Thomas in at least one of my leagues
How bad is it for Miami? DE star Jason Taylor had no tackles and no sacks.
It was the first time he had been shut out in both departments since opening
game in 2003
The Atlanta Falcons, who beat the Chargers Sunday 21-20, were without the services
of DT Rod Coleman. Coleman has been the most productive DT in most IDP leagues.
Apparently Coleman was in an auto accident the day before the game. I say "apparently"
because the whole thing seems shrouded in mystery. The only news given out by
Atlanta team officials was that Coleman was in a one-car accident Saturday morning
and injured his shoulder and knee to the point that he could not play. However,
neither the Falcons, Coleman nor his agent will provide details of the accident
that prevented him from even attending Sunday's game. The team rescheduled HC
Jim Mora's weekly press conference twice on Monday, which led to only two cameramen
and a reporter being in attendance. Even odder is that the press conference
lasted all of 60 seconds. The suspicion in Atlanta is that the team and Coleman
are hiding something
Atlanta Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall, the No. 8 overall draft pick, expects
to play his first NFL game Sunday after recovering from a small fracture in
his left hip. At first, the Falcons feared Hall would be out 10 weeks, but the
recovery went smoother than expected
Falcon CB Kevin Mathis had his most productive game as a pro with 9-0 tackles
The Chargers are considering their options at CB as Sammy Davis continues to
struggle. He's already been splitting time with Jamar Fletcher when he gave
up the 50-yard play to Peerless Price that helped the Falcons rally from a 10-point
deficit. Other than Fletcher, who was burned by Dez White on a big play in the
game, another option is Drayton Florence. Joked one San Diego writer, "(Sammy
Davis) plays more like Mr. Bojangles than a former first round pick"
With Tennessee attempting a comeback against Houston Sunday, the Titans faced
a fourth and two and the Texan's four-yard line with less than two minutes left.
Enter Texan safety Marcus Coleman, who intercepted a Steve McNair pass to seal
the 20-10 win. Coleman added 6-0 tackles
Titan opponents have been throwing towards Titan CB Andre Dyson with success
lately. After a nice year in 2003, Dyson was entering his contract year hoping
to make an impression. He has, but it has not been favorable. He's given up
big plays over the past three weeks, including a 47-yard reception by Texan
WR Corey Bradford on the opening drive. This week Dyson goes up against Daunte
Culpepper and the Vikings
Eagle's CB Lito Sheppard returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown
to put the Eagles up 23 point in the third quarter in their 30-8 win over Carolina
Sunday. Sheppard had another interception as the game closed out
Interesting stat
the Eagles are tied for the league lead in sacks with
twenty but no player has more than three
Panther DE Mike Rucker left Sunday's game due to an irregular heartbeat. After
returning to Charlotte following the game, Rucker underwent tests that revealed
no internal problems or structural damage to his heart. Rucker, who had 12 sacks
last year, has none so far this year
NY Jet rookie LB Jonathan Vilma had an early Christmas present Sunday from
SF QB Tim Rattay. Trailing 15-14, the 49ers had the ball on first down when
Rattay threw about as poor of a pass as you will see. The ball went straight
into a surprised Vilma's chest, who returned the ball 14 yards. The Jets went
down to score to seal the victory. Said Vilma, "It came so quickly I was
like, 'Thank you!'"
Jets DE John Abraham got another sack Sunday. That makes six on the last three
games and seven on the year
LB Jamie Winborn had a nice game for the 49ers with 11-2 tackles
As usual, the undefeated New England Patriots did it with defense Sunday in
their 30-20 win over Seattle. It started off with Richard Seymour catching a
Matt Hasselbeck pass tipped by fellow lineman Willie McGinest and returning
it 27 yards. Five plays later, the Patriots scored to put them up 7-0. On Seattle's
next series, CB Ty Law intercepted another Hasselbeck pass which led to a field
goal to out the Pats up by 10
Patriot safeties Rodney Harrison and Eugene Wilson both had solid games Sunday.
Harrison had 6-6 tackles and Wilson had 9-0 with a forced fumble
Seahawks defensive end Grant Wistrom will miss the next four to six weeks because
of a small crack and bruise in his left knee bone
Jaguar LB Mike Peterson is a top five IDP scorer in many leagues. On Sunday,
Peterson 6-1 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble as the Jaguars beat Kansas
City 22-16
Chief's CB Dexter McCleon was picked on by Jaguar QB Byron Leftwich for much
of the game. On the winning drive, WR Jimmy Smith caught three straight passes
over McCleon at one point, and the touchdown to Cortez Hankton was also over
McCleon. McCleon, at 31, might have lost a step. Wrote Joe Pasnanski of the
Kansas City Star, "
cornerbacks age faster than presidents."
He also wrote, "Cornerbacks like to say that they're on an island. Well,
on Sunday, Jacksonville receiver Jimmy Smith had himself a little island vacation.
Yes, he was drinking piña coladas and sunning on McCleon Island. He might
buy a timeshare"
Packer safety made the defensive play of the game as Green Bay beat Detroit
38-10. The game was still in contention in the third quarter as Sharper stepped
in front of a Joey Harrington pass and returned it 36 yards for the score. The
score changed the lead from seven points to fourteen. Green Bay never looked
back
Lions MLB Earl Holmes had 8-6 tackles in the loss
The Denver Broncos rank first in the NFL in total yards allowed. A few key
additions can be easily attributed to this. They drafted rookie LB DJ Williams,
acquired safety John Lynch, and the most important addition was CB Champ Bailey
Williams has become a real force for the team. He leads the team in tackles
and could be a defensive rookie of the year candidate. In Sunday's 31-3 win
over the Raiders, Williams delivered a highlight type blow to Oakland RB Zack
Crockett as he tried to make a reception. Williams had 4-3 tackles on the day
Oakland safety Marques Anderson had a big IDP day with 14-2 tackles and an
interception. Those numbers are especially indicative of how deep into the Raider
defense RB Reuben Droughns was able to regularly get
Steeler LB James Farrior continues to have a big year. Farrior had two sacks
and caused two fumbles to go with 5-0 tackles in Pittsburgh's 24-20 win over
Dallas. One of Farrior's forced fumbles became the most important play of the
game for the Steelers. With Dallas ahead 20-17 and moving the ball in Pittsburgh
territory, Farrior sacked QB Vinny Testaverde and forced the fumble. DE Kimo
von Oelhoffen recovered the ball and returned in 21 yards. Five plays later,
and with only 34 seconds remaining, Pittsburgh scored to win the game. Von Oelhoffen's
fumble recovery was nominated for play of the week
Despite 11-1 tackles Sunday, Cowboy CB Terrence Newman has not made a big impact.
His play has been sporadic, at best. Early Champ Bailey comparisons appear to
be inaccurate at this point
The Cowboy defensive struggles have not been all Newman's fault, though. The
defensive line has not been much help as of late, with the only pressure on
opposing QBs coming as a result of a blitz. Marcellus Wiley has been very ineffective.
The bottom line is that nobody has been making big plays
Saints safety Tebucky Jones had a nice stat line Sunday in their 38-31 loss
to the Vikings with 8-3 tackles. However, two mental mistakes of his proved
costly, both occurring in the fourth quarter
The first mistake came on a third and nine midway through the period, after
Culpepper threw an incomplete pass. Instead of having to kick a field goal,
Jones committed a personal foul on a helmet to helmet hit on Culpepper. That
led to a first down followed by a touchdown three plays later. His second mistake
came on the Vikings final series as the Vikings once again faced a third down
play on their own 18 yard line. Jones blew the coverage and allowed WR Nate
Burleson to get 11 yards and a first down. The Vikings killed the clock four
plays later to hold on for the win
That was an amazing play by Rams safety Adam Archuleta as Tampa Bay was about
to score Monday night. Archuleta forced Michael Pittman to fumble the ball just
as he was about to hit the ground, scooped up the ball and ran it 93 yards for
the score to put the Rams up by a touchdown. It was a 14 point swing
The fumble return was the third longest in team history
Until next week
