Dynasty Watch - Week 13

The purpose of this column is to spotlight deeper roster moves that could pay off big over the course of the season. Unless stated in a player's write up, we're not looking for one-week wonders here, but shark moves that could really strengthen your team down the road.

Dynasty Watch focuses on low risk, huge payoff roster moves that you might be able make before the guys in your league think about it. This aim of this column is to make you look like a genius to the other owners in your league. When news breaks, and the other owners are scrambling to make a waiver wire move, we want them to be upset time and time again that the player is already on your squad.

What has he done so far
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. In fact, even thinking about Newhouse is a reach. He is the son of former Dallas Cowboys RB Robert Newhouse. He started all 4 years at Baylor, playing every single game over that period and played as a true freshman. Newhouse sat on the Arizona practice squad last season, not seeing a single snap of the ball. He is a kid with great character, great work ethic, and is very coachable. He is tough over the middle of the field, and given that he lacks speed, he will never be anything more than a possession receiver.

Current Situation
Newhouse just been activated from the practice squad by the Cardinals. There is only one single reason for this: John Navarre is the new starting QB for the Cardinals. Navarre has been working almost exclusively with Newhouse this season while the two of them were not on the regular traveling roster. Navarre and Newhouse are in sync with each other, meaning Newhouse could get a lot of opportunity as the receiver that has the best connection with the new starting QB. Navarre has confidence in and is comfortable with Newhouse.

Spotlight ETA
Right now. Navarre is the new starting QB. There is a strong chance that Newhouse is looked to often as Navarre develops. Newhouse's current upside is completely connected to Navarre. Navarre struggles and this is all academic. Boldin and Fitzgerald are clearly the stars of the passing game. There is room for a possession receiver, and Denny Green is known for 3 WR set.

Dynasty Upside
Long shot. Hail Mary. That said, there is a chance for Newhouse here is Navarre turns out to be a real NFL QB. We are not saying that is going to be the case. The Cardinal QB is going to be a fantasy force in the future under Denny Green. If that ends up being Navarre, Newhouse has a chance to be a factor for the Cardinals as a possession receiver. We are clearly not saying that Newhouse is Cris Carter, but Denny Green's last possession receiver was pretty good.

Final Thoughts
Newhouse had a great preseason, but this is still a real long shot. Eli Manning had been working with practice squad WRs all season. When Eli Manning was activated Jamaar Taylor had two receptions for 105 yards. No reason Newhouse couldn't start pulling in a lot of balls with Navarre. If you like to be light years ahead of the rest of the guys in your league, and you have the space, take a shot.

What has he done so far
Armstrong is coming into his own this season. He began the season as the #4 WR and has worked his way up from there. In his rookie season, Armstrong only played in 8 games and never started. He never had more than 2 receptions in any game, and his season high was only 31 receiving yards.

In 2004 he has moved into the #3 WR on the team and has had several very solid games. His best to date was week 5 where he had 6 receptions for 101 yards and a TD. He has even started a game this year.

Current Situation
Armstrong is still considered the #3 WR on the Texans behind Andre Johnson and Jabar Gaffney. Corey Bradford is also in the mix, but he has not lived up to his expectations. Bradford's contract is up at the end of 2004, and even if he returns to the Texans in 2005, Armstrong should still be ahead of him in the depth chart.

Armstrong is putting up numbers which are very similar to starter Jabar Gaffney's numbers, and he will certainly challenge Gaffney for the starting role in 2005, if not sooner.

Spotlight ETA
The true test for Armstrong will be when Camp opens for 2005. As Armstrong continues to emerge as a quality WR, he will push Gaffney for the starting role opposite Johnson.

Gaffney has not lived up to his expectations. His best year was his rookie year where he totaled only 41 receptions for 483 yards and 1 TD. He will probably surpass those numbers this year, but it may be too little too late for him as Armstrong is progressing much faster.

As a passing team, Houston has moved from the bottom of the league in 2002 (32) and near the bottom in 2003 (30) to #6 so far in 2004. To date Andre Johnson has been the main focus of this passing attack, but that is going to change. It won't take long for defenses to reduce Johnson's effectiveness and force Houston to throw to someone else. If Armstrong can finish the season strong, he should be able to start the 2005 season as the #2 receiver on a top 10 passing offense.

Dynasty Upside
Armstrong has already surpassed Corey Bradford in the Houston passing game, and he's pushing Gaffney for a starting role. If Armstrong can secure the starting role, the sky will be the limit for him.

Houston has improved their passing game tremendously over the last 2 years, and they are currently putting up top 10 numbers. Johnson is the main focus of that passing offense for now, but as defenses begin to adjust, it won't be long before other players on the team will have to help out.

If Armstrong can show that he belongs in the starting lineup ahead of Gaffney (who has never proven that he can handle the job), Armstrong will be the person who benefits from this the most. If he can start the 2005 season as the #2 WR, he'll could easily crack the 1000 yard mark and rake in 3-5 TDs as well.

Final Thoughts
Armstrong is another young WR from a small school who is looking to make a big name for himself in the NFL. Houston has elevated their passing game, and they are looking to throw the ball more down field to their wide receivers than the little dump off passes to the running backs and tight ends.

As Houston continues to improve, the players who can take advantage of that will improve as well. Armstrong is in a great position to break into the starting lineup for 2005. If he and QB David Carr can develop some chemistry, he can become a solid #2 WR behind Johnson, and a fantastic value pickup in many fantasy leagues.
