Dynasty Watch - Week 3

The purpose of this column is to spotlight deeper roster moves that could pay
off big over the course of the season. Unless stated in a player's write up
we're not looking for one-week wonders here but shark moves that could really
strengthen your team down the road.
Dynasty Watch focuses on low risk, huge payoff roster moves that you
might be able make before the guys in your league think about it. This aim of
this column is to make you look like a genius to the other owners in your league.
When news breaks and the other owners are scrambling to make a waiver wire move,
we want them to be upset time and time again that the player is already on your
squad.

What has he done so far
Pittman is entering his third season with Tampa Bay, and he began the year with
a 3 game suspension. He can rejoin the team as they begin preparation for the
October 3rd game against Denver. In 2003, Pittman had 187 carries for 751 yards
rushing, and 75 receptions for 597 yards receiving.
Current Situation
Currently Pittman is #3 on the Tampa depth chart behind Charlie Garner and Jamel
White. Although he cannot practice with the team because of the suspension,
he is working hard on his own, and is very anxious to rejoin the team.
Spotlight ETA
Pittman should hit the ground running when he rejoins the team after the September
26th game against Oakland. Tampa's 0-2 now, and has not looked very impressive
to start the season. Tampa is desperate for a running game, averaging 19 carries
for only 61 rushing yards over their first two games. Their offense has not
reached the end zone yet this season. If Pittman explodes onto the scene and
proves that his troubles are behind him, he could crack the starting lineup
within a game or two.
Dynasty Upside
Once Pittman hits the field, he will be given every chance to take the starting
role. Although Garner is averaging 4.2 YPC as a starter, he is clearly not providing
the offensive spark that Tampa was hoping for. At 29 years old, Pittman is still
three years younger than Garner, and Pittman has a better grasp of the offense.
He's way below everyone's fantasy radar now, and can probably be acquired via
cheap trade or waiver wire pickup. Tampa signed Garner and White in the offseason
with the hope of replacing Pittman, but they have not done the job. If Pittman
takes off, his past troubles will be forgotten.
Final Thoughts
The Bucs are in trouble. Their offense is stagnant, and they are looking for
a spark. Pittman will be back for game four and should be ready to go. If he
can come in and give the offense the boost that it desperately needs, his off
the field problems will be forgotten. If you can pick him up off of the waiver
wire or a trade for a minor player, it's probably worth the gamble. Pittman
had over 1300 yards from scrimmage as a 13 games starter last year and could
easily repeat that this year.

What has he done so far
Henson was highly regarded coming out of college, but chose Baseball over Football.
He spent one year with the New York Yankees organization before realizing that
he was a better football player and returned. Houston traded Henson to the Cowboys
during the offseason, and he signed an incentive laden contract. His preseason
stats were not very impressive, and he was not able to secure wide-open starting
job.
Current Situation
Currently Henson is listed as #3 on the Cowboys depth chart behind Vinny Testaverde
and Tony Romo. Henson is not expected to take over the starting role this year,
but could see time if there is an injury.
Spotlight ETA
Testaverde became the only 40+ year old player in NFL history to have back to
back 300 yard passing games. He has 18 years of NFL experience, and has thrown
for over 41,000 yards during his career. His days as a 300 yard passer are over.
His three interceptions in five attempts during the Cleveland game is a good
example of how Vinny can wear down pretty quick if the Cowboys expect 300 yards
passing out of him every game.
With Eddie George averaging only 3.3 yards per carry, and Julius Jones lost
for at least two months, the Cowboy ground game is not going to scare anyone.
If they are going to get it done, it's going to have to be through the air.
There is a very good chance that Testaverde won't be the starting QB for all
16 games this year.
Tony Romo is currently ahead of Henson on the depth chart, and would probably
get the nod at this point if Vinny went down to an injury. However, Romo has
not thrown a pass during a regular season game in two years with the Cowboys,
and his status as primary backup is hardly set in stone.
If Testaverde goes down to injury or ineffectiveness, the Cowboys will turn
to Romo or Henson. At that point, the job will be up for grabs, and Henson will
certainly get a shot at the starting job. If Testaverde makes it the entire
season, Henson is penciled in for the 2005 starting job.
Dynasty Upside
The Cowboys have a lot solid, unspectacular pass catchers. If Testaverde can
throw back to back 300 yards games in this offense, there must be some talented
guys hauling in the rock. If Henson takes over as the starter, he's going to
have a lot of support around him. While he will probably never be a 4000 yard
passer, Henson has a lot of fantasy upside and is playing on a good team that
can scrape out the tough wins. That's always important for building a young
QB's confidence. Head coach Bill Parcells is a good judge of talent, and has
shown a solid ability to pick a good QB. Given that, Henson is probably worth
picking up on the waiver wire and holding through the rest of the season.
Final Thoughts
Testaverde isn't going to be able to keep tossing 300 yards games. He's too
old and has too much mileage on his arm to continue that pace. With Julius Jones
on the bench for two months and Eddie George almost out of gas himself, the
Cowboys are going to have to continue to win through the air. Henson could see
the field by the end of the season. Worst-case scenario, Henson rides the bench
for a year watching and learning about the NFL and begins the 2005 season as
the starter. Either way he is worth a spot on your roster this year.
