What has he done so far
A former High School All-American. Wells is a big back with running skills and
power. He has quick feet, and a good body lean. Can make the first man miss,
and is a good downhill runner.
After a decent debut in 2002, Wells was so unimpressive in 2002 that the team
spent a supplemental draft pick on Tony Hollings.
Current Situation
Started the season as the teams 3rd or 4th RB, but has moved up the depth chart
into the #2 spot behind Domanick Davis due to the injury to Tony Hollings. Domanick
Davis has been struggling both on the field and with injuries this season. Davis
is averaging less than 3-yards a carry this season, and after 10 carries for
25 yards, was sat down last week in favor of Wells.
Wells started in place of Davis in week 4, and put up 26-105-1. The next week
against the Vikings, Davis started and had 14 carries for 31 yards. Last week
against the Titans, Davis averaged 2.5 yards on 10 carries before taking the
bench. Coming in for Davis, Wells had 22 carries for 73 yards and a TD.
Davis has been bothered by a sprained right ankle, and perhaps this is harsh,
but Domanick Davis was never expected to be a star in the NFL, in fact he shocked
the game coming out of no where last season to become the starting RB for the
Texans. Davis is far from a secure stud in the game, and with his recent poor
play will most likely find himself on the bench soon. The history of the NFL
is littered with flash in the pan players with incredible seasons that for whatever
reason were never able to recapture their former glory.
The very talented Tony Hollings is also nursing an injured right knee, and
is beginning to look like a bust.
Spotlight ETA
The time is now for Wells, who has scored in 2 of the last 3 games. The Texans
are heading into their bye week, which will give Hollings and Davis an opportunity
to heal more without Wells further claiming the job from them. However, should
Wells come out of the break hot as the team's starter, he has an opportunity
to not look back. Neither Hollings nor Davis is so entrenched that Wells can't
become the starter of this team after taking some time to further develop in
the NFL.
The current flavor of the NFL, Denver RB Reuben Droughns is currently in the
middle of a fairy tale story that started almost exactly from a point that Wells
is at right now. Not that Wells is a lock to follow the same path, but the opportunity
is right there all laid out in front of him.
Dynasty Upside
A starting RB on any team is pure gold in fantasy football, much less a starting
RB on an up and coming Houston Texans team. Should Wells be able to grab the
starting role and hold it, he could easily be a 1st round pick in redraft leagues
next season, and a very valuable young runner in dynasty leagues.
It's certainly not a lock, but that reasoning alone is worth grabbing Wells
if you can.
Final Thoughts
Wells is either sitting out there in the free agent pool, or he has been added
so someone's team that is just desperate for a RB this season. With the rash
of RB injuries this season, Wells could easily have been added recently. However,
it is very unlikely that the owner who has Wells is even remotely considering
what he might have on his hands. A shark should easily be able to go out and
acquire Wells for virtually nothing.
With Houston on a bye this week, Wells is going to be dropped in tons of leagues
as owners try to flesh out their rosters. If you have the space, snag him when
no one's looking.
There are no guarantees in fantasy football, only opportunities. Wells could
easily flop, and become another player who's only value is in winning bar room
trivia with your buddies. However, if you get a chance to strike lightening,
take it.
