WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Philadelphia Eagles
It was an outstanding game for both Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens, who connected
3 times for touchdown scores. Owens made a 59-yard touchdown reception during
the first quarter of play. He made a second 29-yard touchdown reception during
the second quarter. He leaped to pull in the ball in double coverage for his
16-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. Like Owens, Todd Pinkston
made a 59 yard touchdown reception.
McNabb finished with 345 passing yards on his 15 completions of 28 attempts.
He was able to scramble and break away from near sacks a number of times to
then connect with his receivers. On one notable play, he scrambled for 14 seconds
before completing a 60 yard pass to Freddie Mitchell.
Both Dorsey Levens and Brian Westbrook were utilized in the red zone. Levens
scored a 4-yard touchdown run. Brian Westbrook made a 1-yard touchdown run.
Westbrook was most effective in the second half after the Eagles had a commanding
lead. Levens finished with 73 yards on his 12 carries. Westbrook had 56 yards
on his 15 carries. The difference between the two was that Westbrook was a factor
in the passing game with 4 receptions for 62 yards. Levens was not targeted
with a pass.
Dallas Cowboys
TE Jason Witten was once again the leading receiver and best play maker for
the Dallas Cowboys. He scored two touchdowns in the first half of play. His
9 receptions for 133 yards on 11 targets led all of the rest of the Cowboys'
receivers who combined for 12 receptions for 121 yards on their 26 targets.
The Cowboys overturned the ball twice in the first quarter. Eddie George had
a ball stripped on a reception. Lance Frazier muffed a kick that was recovered
by the Eagles and led to Dorsey Levens' touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Vinny
Testaverde threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. It was a
pass intended for Jason Witten in the end zone.
All three running backs for the Cowboys were used. Eddie George was the only
one to score, with his 15-yard run during the opening drive of the third quarter.
But he only managed 39 yards on his 11 carries. Richie Anderson carried the
ball 6 times for 28 yards; his longest rush like George was for 15 yards. ReShard
Lee saw two carries for 4 yards total.
WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW
Philadelphia Eagles
QB: Donovan McNabb (15-28-345, 4 TD, 2-14 rushing) It was an outstanding game
for Donovan McNabb. He connected with Terrell Owens for three touchdowns, two
in the first half for touchdown scores. McNabb made an incredible play near
the end of the half. He scrambled and avoided a number of sacks for 14 seconds
after the snap to make an amazing 60-yard pass to Freddie Mitchell. He was able
to scramble and avoid the Dallas defense throughout the game.
Koy Detmer came into the game late in the fourth quarter. But he just handed
the ball off to Dorsey Levens.
RB: Brian Westbrook (15-56, 1 TD rushing, 4-62 receiving on 5 targets) Westbrook
made a nice carry up the middle to gain 5 yards up to the Dallas 4 yard line.
Near the end of the second quarter, Westbrook made a 1-yard touchdown run. He
added a 42-yard reception in the second half.
Dorsey Levens (12-73, 1 TD rushing) Levens gained 8 yards on his first carry
in the first quarter. Levens ran easily in for a 4-yard touchdown. He gained
14 yards on his third carry to the outside.
Josh Parry (1-5 receiving on 1 target) Fullback made a short catch near the
end of the first quarter.
WR: Terrell Owens (6-134, 3 TD receiving on 8 targets, 1-6 rushing) Owens gained
6 yards on an end around. He made a 59-yard touchdown reception. The reception
was over the middle and he easily outran the Cowboys for the score. He was wide
open on his second touchdown reception for 29-yards. Owens made a 6-yard reception
that was called back on a holding penalty. He made a jump in double coverage
for his third touchdown reception. Basically, he was dominant.
Todd Pinkston (1-59, 1 TD receiving on 3 targets) Pinkston was targeted deep
during the opening drive. He made a leaping catch in coverage for a 59-yard
touchdown reception.
Freddie Mitchell (1-60 receiving on 5 targets) Mitchell was targeted deep,
but McNabb overthrew him. Mitchell was the recipient of McNabb's great 60-yard
pass that extended the drive leading to Brian Westbrook's touchdown. Mitchell
nearly made a catch in double coverage but could not hold onto the ball.
Greg Lewis (1-13 receiving on 2 targets, 1-2 rushing) Lewis made the first
reception of the game for the Eagles.
TE: Chad Lewis (1-12 receiving on 2 targets) Lewis made a 12 yard reception
over the middle.
L. J. Smith (0-0 receiving on 2 targets) Smith was targeted in the end zone.
K: David Akers (7 XP) Akers converted all seven of his extra point attempts.
Pass Defense: Jevon Kearse batted down a pass attempt. Sheldon Brown batted
down a pass intended for Keyshawn Johnson. Lito Sheppard returned an interception
101 yards to score a touchdown. Vinny Testaverde was sacked once by Jeremiah
Trotter.
Rush Defense: The Cowboys were held to 72 total rushing yards. Mark Simoneau
stripped the football from Eddie George.
Dallas Cowboys
QB: Vinny Testaverde (21-30-254, 2 TD, 1 INT, 3-1 rushing) To the credit of
Testaverde, he did not give up in this game those it was a losing effort from
the very beginning. Testaverde only threw one interception, and that was in
the fourth quarter. He looked and found Jason Witten often and threw two touchdown
passes to the tight end. If there's a bright spot in this offense, it's Testaverde
to Witten.
RB: Eddie George (11-39, 1 TD rushing, 2-35 receiving on 3 targets, 1 fumble
lost) George rushed for 1 yard on his first carry and only 2 on his second.
Eddie George made a great catch on a play early in the game, but had the ball
stripped by Mark Simoneau. It was George's first fumble on a reception in his
career. George gained 7 yards on his second reception. He made a 15-yard touchdown
run during the Cowboys' opening drive of the second half.
Richie Anderson (6-28 rushing, 2-6 receiving on 2 targets) Anderson made the
first 1st down conversion for the Cowboys with a 9 yard gain.
ReShard Lee (2-4 rushing) Lee played in the first quarter and gained 2 yards
on his carry. He was more of a factor as a kick off returner. He gained 39 yards
to the Dallas 48 yard line. In the third quarter, he made another long kick
return of 62 yards.
Darian Barnes (1-0 receiving on 2 targets) Fullback Barnes was stopped for
no gain on his one reception.
WR: Keyshawn Johnson (4-53 receiving on 6 targets) Johnson was targeted over
the middle, but Ike Reese had him covered. He made a 22-yard reception at the
sidelines and was able to stay in bounds. Two of Johnson's receptions for a
combined 30 yards were during the fourth quarter.
Quincy Morgan (1-21 receiving on 6 targets) Morgan drew a defensive pass interference
call. He was stopped for a loss of 1 yard on an end around carry. Despite being
targeted 6 times, Morgan made only one reception for 21 yards in the fourth
quarter.
Patrick Crayton (2-6 receiving on 2 targets) Rookie receiver Crayton caught
both passes that came his way, but for very short yardage.
TE: Jason Witten (9-133, 2 TD receiving on 11 targets) Witten's first target
was thrown too low for him to catch. He made a 22-yard reception during the
second quarter. He made a 29-yard touchdown reception during that same drive.
He made a 24-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. He was completely
wide open. Witten made a 25-yard reception to start the third quarter for the
Cowboys. Testaverde's interception was intended for Witten in the end zone.
He looks to be the primary weapon in this offense and seems to have the complete
confidence of both Testaverde and Parcells.
K: Billy Cundiff (3 XP) Cundiff converted all three of his extra point attempts.
There was not one field goal attempt for either team.
Pass Defense: The Cowboys started the game blitzing and Greg Ellis recorded
a sack on McNabb. That was the only sack of the game. But after forcing the
Eagles to punt on their first two possessions, things went downhill very quickly.
McNabb was able to overcome any pressure that they put on him and still make
completions.
Rush Defense: Both Brian Westbrook and Dorsey Levens scored rushing touchdowns.
They rushed for a combined 129 yards and were able to find holes in the Cowboys'
rush defense.
