*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Shaun King (Ari) practiced on Friday and is
expected to be available to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Carson Palmer (Cin) did not practice on
Friday and will need to make significant improvement to start this
weekend.  "He could be at the 2nd or 3rd spot Sunday," said HC Marvin
Lewis.  "He won't start, as of Friday.  It would take a miracle.  It
wouldn't be fair to load that on him, as far as starting the game."
Jon Kitna will start for the team.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Kelly Holcomb (Cle) partially participated in
Friday's practice and is not expected to play this weekend.

*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Drew Henson (Dal) has been moved to the #3 QB
position with Tony Romo taking over as the backup.  HC Bill Parcells
says the move is merely to get Romo some work with the team (and not
as the scout team QB).  "If you're always the third guy, then you're
running the plays off cards, the scout team plays.  And I want them to
keep a feel of the offense and keep a feel of the reads as it pertains
to our system," said Parcells.  "That's why I rotate them back and
forth once in a while, because I want to make sure they are staying in
tune with what we're doing and preparing for the game like they have
to play in it."

rusher says he is open to playing in 2005 (which would be his 16th
season in the NFL).  "I don't have any problem playing next year,"
said Smith.  "I'm not totally happy with the way I performed in terms
of the success of the team and all, but I wanted to make a
contribution and I feel like I have made a contribution," said Smith.
"And I think I've got a lot in me to make more contributions to this
team or wherever it may be if I choose to continue on."

crutches until Saturday due to a sprained MCL.  He is listed as

to play the next weekend," said Palmer.  "That's what they're telling
me.  It's not strong enough to protect it.  I'd be shocked (if he
played this weekend)."

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Carson Palmer (Cin) did not practice on
Thursday but he is improving. It still looks like Jon Kitna will start
but Palmer is holding out hope of playing this weekend.  "I'm hoping
for this week," said Palmer.  "I'm going to see a doctor again so
we'll find out (on Friday).  I've been doing tons of rehab.  It's
getting better every day.  I'm just working out all the muscles around
it."

weekend.  "He could be at the 2nd or 3rd spot Sunday," said HC Marvin
Lewis.  "He won't start, as of Friday.  It would take a miracle.  It

keep a feel of the offense and keep a feel of the reads as it pertains
to our system," said Parcells.  "That's why I rotate them back and
forth once in a while, because I want to make sure they are staying in
tune with what we're doing and preparing for the game like they have
to play in it."

That's the way it is. He's coming back off the injury that he had. It
says a lot about him coming back and playing."

Pennington didn't use that for an excuse. "The only day I'm sore and
fight through it is on Wednesday, because I have Monday and Tuesday
off," said Pennington, who is 1-1 since his return. "I feel good
throwing the football, I really do. I've surprised myself with some of
the throws I've been making. My whole game is decision-making, and I
can't have games like Sunday. I didn't make good decisions."

QB Tim Rattay (SF) did not practice on Wednesday and is not expected
to play this weekend due to his injured foot.

QB Marc Bulger (StL) did not practice fully with the team on Wednesday
and is questionable for this weekend with his injured throwing
shoulder. On Wednesday, Bulger threw about a dozen passes in an
individual drill after also throwing several warm ups. He threw at
about three-quarters speed and a bit sidearm, but it was enough for
head coach Mike Martz to exclaim, "[He's] back!" after the first pass.

Bulger didn't participate in any team drills, but the plan is to
gradually increase the work load and then make a decision on his
availability, perhaps on Friday. "I don't know what to tell you
because he actually threw the ball much better today than I would have
predicted," Martz said after practice. "He feels like he can zip it,
but we just asked him to refrain from that."

contribution and I feel like I have made a contribution," said Smith.
"And I think I've got a lot in me to make more contributions to this
team or wherever it may be if I choose to continue on."

RB T.J. Duckett (Atl) could miss two weeks after knee surgery
according to sources. Although coach Jim Mora thinks he could be back
for week 16. "We don't expect him to miss more than just this game,"
Mora said.

"I think it was clicking or just bothering him," Mora said. "So they
did an MRI and it needed to be scoped. It's nothing serious. A lot of
guys play without a meniscus. I've coached players before -- not at
the running back position -- who have had it done on Monday and played
on Sunday. So its not a big deal."

FB Justin Griffith (Atl) has been lost for the remainder of the season
after being placed on the injured reserve list with his injured ankle.

slowly," Bell added. "I got a few reps today. Still, I don't think I'm

blitz. I know it'll be a little extra pain, but I'll just try to fight
through it and see how it feels Sunday."

However, he will likely need a pain killing shot in his shoulder
before the game. "I got a shot after the [Miami] game and it wore off,
and I was fine," he said. "If I get a shot before the game, I'll be
fine afterwards. I don't really worry about that. I just want to get
through the game."

Whether Bell actually plays in Sunday's game will be a choice that the
team makes over the weekend. "We'll see how he feels, and see how he
practices [Friday] and see how he feels on Saturday," Shanahan said.
"We'll kind of go with [a] gut [feeling]." Added Bell: "They told me
it couldn't get any worse. They just don't want to have any setbacks,
get me going, then re-injure it. The way it's looking, it's going to
be a game-time decision."

RB Clinton Portis (Was) might be changing his socks soon. Portis and
safety Sean Taylor were fined $5,000 apiece for wearing red socks
instead of the Redskins' usual white during a game against the New
York Giants on Dec. 5. They received another fine for the same
violations of the league's uniform rules in last Sunday's game against
Philadelphia.

"The fine is getting pretty expensive, so I don't know," Portis said
when asked if he'll wear the socks in San Francisco. "I've got to come
up with some kind of scheme to find a way to get out of it." He said
he chose the socks for "just a different look and a different feel for
the game."

"I think that is a stupid fine for the simple fact that they want
everybody to be the same," Portis said. "This is an individual game,
