Players in the News (Wednesday Edition)

Quarterbacks

QB J.P. Losman (Buf) is still out with his injured ankle.

QB Tom Brady (NE) is on the injury report as probable (which seems like a normal occurrence for him). He will start as usual this weekend.

QB Ben Roethlisberger (Pit) was carted off the practice field on Wednesday. He was diagnosed with a bone bruise in his right knee, but his status is not fully known.

QB Ken Dorsey (SF) has been named the team's starting QB for this weekend's game.

QB Tim Rattay (SF) did not practice on Wednesday, but he might be available as a backup to Ken Dorsey.


Running Backs

RB Travis Henry (Buf) took a rest day on Wednesday but will start this weekend as normal.

RB Chris Perry (Cin) practiced on Wednesday and hopes to play this weekend.

RB Richie Anderson (Dal) suffered a bone bruise on his right knee. He was able to get some work in on Wednesday and hopes to play this weekend.

RB Julius Jones (Dal) is not on the injury report this week and should make his professional debut this weekend.

RB Garrison Hearst (Den) did not practice on Wednesday due to an injured ankle. He received an MRI, but his playing status for this weekend is not known.

RB Najeh Davenport (GB) will likely sit this weekend with a hamstring injury.

RB James Mungro (Ind) practiced on Wednesday and should be able to play this weekend.

RB Lamar Gordon (Mia) is slated to start for the team this weekend.

FB Rob Konrad (Mia) will miss another game due to a staph infection in his thigh.

RB Travis Minor (Mia) will sit this weekend with his sprained right ankle.

RB Sammy Morris (Mia) partially participated in Wednesday's practice but hopes to play this weekend despite an ankle injury.

RB Michael Bennett (Min) is out for this weekend's game.

RB Onterrio Smith (Min) will have the appeal of his 4-game suspension heard on October 4th. That obviously means he'll be on the field until then.

RB Kevin Faulk (NE) still has not rejoined the team and remains in Louisiana with family after the death of his mother.

RB Justin Fargas (Oak) has a turf toe injury that was suffered in week one action. He did not practice on Wednesday but still hopes to play this weekend.

FB Fred Beasley (SF) practiced on Wednesday. This is great news for Kevan Barlow owners and Beasley's presence was greatly missed in week one.

RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) may sit this weekend with a bone bruise in his knee. Alexander did not practice on Wednesday but is improving and hopes to play this weekend. However, he will need to practice before HC Mike Holmgren will allow Alexander to play this weekend. If he can't go, Maurice Morris will get the start.

RB Chris Brown (Ten) did not practice on Wednesday but still hopes to play this weekend with an ankle injury.


Wide Receivers

WR Anquan Boldin (Ari) is still out with his injured knee.

WR Travis Taylor (Bal) is officially listed as questionable with his injured groin, but it is looking like he will be rested for four weeks so he can fully recover. Randy Hymes is expected to start in place of Taylor.

WR Steve Smith (Car) suffered a broken fibula last Monday night against the Packers. He likely will be out for 8 to 12 weeks. Keary Colbert will start with Smith out.

WR Peter Warrick (Cin) rested his knee on Wednesday but should play this weekend.

WR Randal Williams (Dal) is still out with a shoulder injury.

WR Charles Rogers (Det) will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his collarbone in week one action. It is the same collarbone that was broken last season.

WR Tai Streets (Det) will start for the team in place of the injured Charles Rogers.

WR Troy Walters (Ind) is out this weekend with a fractured arm.

WR Samie Parker (KC) practiced on Wednesday but could sit this weekend with an injured hamstring.

WR Jamaar Taylor (NYG) is out this weekend with an injured hamstring.

WR Jerry Rice (Oak) was healthy week one, but he saw decreased playing time as the young WRs Doug Gabriel, Ronald Curry, and Alvis Whitted got more time. Rice met with HC Norv Turner on Wednesday to discuss the WR's role with the team. The conversation was not made public.

WR Koren Robinson (Sea) dropped three passes in week one and will change from a tinted visor to a clear visor.

WR Kevin Curtis (StL) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend.

WR Joey Galloway (TB) will miss several weeks with a groin injury. Charles Lee will start in his place.

WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) did not practice on Wednesday and should miss another game recovering from knee surgery.

WR Jake Schifino (Ten) practiced on Wednesday and could play this weekend.


Tight Ends

TE Tony Stewart (Cin) has been named the team's starting TE ahead of Reggie Kelly.

TE Steve Heiden (Cle) is out this weekend with an injured knee.

TE David Martin (GB) did not practice on Wednesday but should play this weekend despite a bruised thigh.

TE Kyle Brady (Jac) is still out with an injured finger.

TE Kris Wilson (KC) is still out with his broken ankle.

TE Jim Kleinsasser (Min) has ACL damage in his right knee and will miss several weeks of action.

TE Brian Kozlowski (Was) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend.


Place Kickers & Special Teamers

PR Chris Gamble (Car) will take over the job with Steve Smith out with a broken leg.

KR Eddie Drummond (Det) did not practice on Wednesday but should play this weekend.

KR Najeh Davenport (GB) may miss this weekend's game with his injured hamstring. If he can't go, Ahmad Carroll could be the team's KR.

PK Kris Brown (Hou) has a concussion and is listed as day-to-day. He did not practice on Wednesday as a precautionary measure but hopes to go on Thursday.

PR Troy Brown (NE) should be healthy enough to return punts this weekend.

KR/PR Wesley Welker (SD) has been released. Drayton Florence will be the team's KR while Eric Parker will take the PR job.

PK Gary Anderson (Ten) has been signed by the team.

PK Aaron Elling (Ten) has been released by the team.

P Craig Hentrich (Ten) practiced on Wednesday and should be able to return this weekend after missing week one action.

PK John Hall (Was) rested his hamstring on Wednesday but should play this weekend.


Offensive Linemen

T L.J. Shelton (Ari) practiced on Wednesday and could play this weekend.

G Michael Moore (Atl) has been lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

T Kevin Shaffer (Atl) did not practice on Wednesday and could sit this weekend with knee and shoulder ailments.

T Ethan Brooks (Bal) is out this weekend with his injured knee.

C Mike Flynn (Bal) is out this weekend.

T Jonathan Ogden (Bal) practiced Wednesday and should return to the starting lineup this weekend.

G Rex Tucker (Chi) is still out with an elbow injury.

T Stacy Andrews (Cin) is out this weekend with an ankle injury.

C Rich Braham (Cin) did not practice on Wednesday but should play this weekend.

G Larry Moore (Cin) is out this weekend with a knee injury.

G Andre Gurode (Dal) missed Wednesday's practice with a sprained MCL.

T Cornell Green (Den) practiced on Wednesday and could play this weekend.

T Kevin Barry (GB) did not practice on Wednesday but should play this weekend with an injured ankle.

G Shawn Andrews (Phi) has been lost for the season after suffering a broken leg in week one action.

G Alan Faneca (Pit) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend with a cast protecting his broken finger.

T Jerome Davis (SF) has been suspended for four games under the NFL's drug abuse program.

C Jeremy Newberry (SF) did not practice on Wednesday and will likely sit this weekend with a knee injury.

C Andy McCollum (StL) did not practice on Wednesday but is expected to play this weekend with an ankle sprain.

G Tom Nutten (StL) did not practice on Wednesday and will likely sit this weekend with turf toe.

T Orlando Pace (StL) has fired his agent Carl Poston. We're not sure if this is news, but hey….we like to cover as much as possible.

G Zach Piller (Ten) suffered a torn biceps and will be out for 3 to 5 months. Jacob Bell will start in place of Pillar.


Defensive Linemen

DE Karon Riley (Atl) will miss this weekend's game with an injured groin.

DT Kelly Gregg (Bal) is out with his injured knee.

DT Matthias Askew (Cin) will not play this weekend after having knee surgery.

DT Gerard Warren (Cle) did not practice on Wednesday due to a strained pectoral, but he should play this weekend.

DT Daleroy Stewart (Dal) has been released by the team.

DT Luther Elliss (Den) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend.

DT Darius Holland (Den) has been re-signed by the team.

DE Trevor Pryce (Den) has a pinched nerve in his back, but he is still planning to play this weekend. He played with the injury in week one after receiving an injection but was not his usual self in the game.

DE James Hall (Det) has his thumb in a cast and might have to sit this weekend.

DT Grady Jackson (GB) dislocated his kneecap on Monday and will be out 2 to 4 weeks.

DE Vonnie Holliday (KC) did not practice on Wednesday and could sit this weekend with an injured groin.

DT Tim Bowens (Mia) did not practice on Wednesday and should sit this weekend with an injured back.

DT Bryan Robinson (Mia) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend.

NT Chris Hoke (Pit) did not practice on Wednesday and should sit this weekend with a staph infection.

LB D.J. Williams (Den) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend.

CB Lenny Walls (Den) separated his should in week one and could miss four weeks. Kelly Herndon will likely get the start in place of Walls.

LB Dre' Bly (Det) is out with a knee injury.

CB Andre Goodman (Det) did not practice on Wednesday due to a thigh bruise, but he is still slated to start this weekend.

CB Mike McKenzie (GB) reported to the team on Wednesday and ended his holdout. He will practice all week and should see action this weekend.

S Mike Doss (Ind) is out this weekend with a hamstring injury.

CB Joseph Jefferson (Ind) is out this weekend with a knee injury.

S Bob Sanders (Ind) is out this weekend with a foot injury.
