Quarterbacks *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Kordell Stewart (Bal) may have some goal line plays specifically for him this weekend. He could see an occasional snap in the red zone in place of Kyle Boller. And he might even see time at WR with Travis Taylor out. In his words, "Slash is coming back, so get ready."
Running Backs *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB William Green (Cle) looks to be the primary rusher again this week with Lee Suggs still not practicing fully and likely to sit. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Lee Suggs (Cle) was still limited in workouts Saturday as he has been all week. It's looking like he'll miss another game. Will Green will be the primary ball carrier again. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) will be a game time decision. All signs are looking good though that he'll start. If his knee handled Saturday's work ok and he feels good in pre game warm-ups, he'll be the guy. The game is a 4:05 ET start though and most leagues will require that rosters be turned in well before Alexander hits the field for pre game warm-ups. You don't pay us to be on the fence so we're saying he starts. For a detailed summary of all that we know on Alexander, check out our Flash Update news here for Sunday http://www.tflreport.com/content/flash04/fbg/00update~UID~1279.htm *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Brown (Ten) made it through practices fine and looks to be the starter Sunday.
Wide Receivers *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) practiced on Saturday and should be able to play and likely start this Monday night. He had been downgraded to Questionable but has made a nice improvement. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) is still having trouble moving laterally and will most likely sit this weekend.
Place Kickers & Special Teamers *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** PR R.W. McQuarters (Chi) has been removed from the injury report and will start this weekend. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** KR Tim Dwight (SD) will be the team's KR this weekend.
Offensive Linemen *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** C Jason Ball (SD) has ended his holdout and will begin practicing with the team next week. Ball had wanted a multi-year deal with the Chargers but has signed their one-year tender offer. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** T Courtney Van Buren (SD) did not practice on Friday and looks less likely to play this weekend.
Defensive Linemen *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** DE Michael Strahan (NYG) is expected to play this weekend despite his now infamous buttock strain. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** DT Paul Grasmanis (Phi) has been declared out for this weekend's game. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** DE DeQuincy Scott (SD) will start in place of the injured Adrian Dingle.
Defensive Backs *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** CB R.W. McQuarters (Chi) has been removed from the injury report and will start this weekend. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** CB Mike McKenzie (GB) will be active this weekend and will at least be in the dime packages. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** S Antuan Edwards (Mia) may be forced to play CB (with both Patrick Surtain and Reggie Howard both ailing) for the team this weekend when they go to nickel and dime packages. This role is not foreign to Edwards as he filled that role while a Packer.
ALL OF THE NEWS Quarterbacks *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Kordell Stewart (Bal) may have some goal line plays specifically for him this weekend. He could see an occasional snap in the red zone in place of Kyle Boller. And he might even see time at WR with Travis Taylor out. In his words, "Slash is coming back, so get ready." QB J.P. Losman (Buf) is still out with his injured ankle. QB Tom Brady (NE) is on the injury report as probable (which seems like a regular occurrence for him). He will start as usual this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Kurt Warner (NYG) has not won a start since the 2001 NFC Championship Game. Of course he has only had nine starts in that span. QB Ben Roethlisberger (Pit) was carted off the practice field on Wednesday. He was diagnosed with a bone contusion in his right knee, but his status is not fully known. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (Pit) has been listed as day-to-day with a bruised knee. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (Pit) did not practice on Thursday and had a noticeable limp while walking. However, on Friday he was able to practice and now looks ready to be the team's backup QB this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Drew Brees (SD) currently has the best QB rating in the AFC with a sparkling 125.2. QB Ken Dorsey (SF) has been named the team's starting QB for this weekend's game. QB Tim Rattay (SF) did not practice on Wednesday, but he might be available as a backup to Ken Dorsey Sunday. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Tim Rattay (SF) sat out of practice again on Thursday. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Tim Rattay (SF) did not practice all week but still hopes to be the team's backup QB this weekend.
Running backs *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Harold Morrow (Bal) has been signed by the team. RB Travis Henry (Buf) took a rest day on Wednesday but will start this weekend as normal. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Stephen Davis (Car) will have surgery in order to alleviate swelling in his knee. He is expected to miss at least two weeks and could be sidelined for up to five. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB DeShaun Foster (Car) will be the team's starting RB with Stephen Davis recovering from knee surgery. Nick Goings and Rod Smart will split the backup RB carries. RB Chris Perry (Cin) practiced on Wednesday and hopes to play this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Perry (Cin) did not practice on Thursday and now could sit this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Perry (Cin) practiced on Friday and has been upgraded to probable. He should be able to play but won't get many touches. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB William Green (Cle) looks to be the primary rusher again this week with Lee Suggs still not practicing fully and likely to sit. RB Lee Suggs (Cle) opened the week listed as questionable on the team's official injury report. Suggs participated in some drills Wednesday, but was held out of the 11-on-11 portion of team drills. His ultimate status for Sunday's game against the Cowboys remains very uncertain. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Lee Suggs (Cle) practiced on Thursday (but the team does not take contact on Thursdays). He is slated to go again on Friday (when the team does take contact). If he comes out of that fine, he will likely share carries with William Green this weekend. "If he has no setbacks, then we'll give him a little more [today], and we'll give him a lot more on Friday, and then we'll make a decision on the weekend. He's truly day-to-day," Coach Butch Davis said. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Lee Suggs (Cle) practiced on Friday but did not take any contact. He has not taken contact all week and remains questionable on the team's injury report. Furthermore, rarely does HC Butch Davis play a guy that hasn't taken contact that week in practice. Given that Suggs is recovering from a neck stinger, he needs to show that he can take a hit before he hits the field. Suggs did not prove that this week. "He does more every day," Davis said. "The trainers have asked him to do a little more. It still remains a medical decision." Suggs sounds like he wants to play. "I've been rarin' to go the last two weeks," Suggs said. "I feel good, I feel like I can play." Note that even if he does play, he'll likely share time with Will Green. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Lee Suggs (Cle) was still limited in workouts Saturday as he has been all week. It's looking like he'll miss another game. Will Green will be the primary ball carrier again. RB Richie Anderson (Dal) suffered a bone bruise on his right knee. He was able to get some work in on Wednesday and hopes to play this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Richie Anderson (Dal) again did not fully participate in practice but was able to get some work in on Thursday. He still hopes to play this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Richie Anderson (Dal) practiced on Friday but has been named a game-time decision for this weekend's game. RB Julius Jones (Dal) is not on the injury report this week and should make his professional debut this weekend. But the Associated Press reported Wednesday afternoon that Jones is still limited by bruised ribs and Parcells said he's not sure whether he will activate the rookie. "I'm not going to play a guy I don't think can play with confidence," he said. Stay tuned on this one. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Julius Jones (Dal) practiced again on Thursday and remains on target to see his first NFL action this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Julius Jones (Dal) practiced on Friday and is slated to play this weekend. "I'm playing," Jones said Friday after practice. "I feel good, and I'm ready to play on Sunday. The rib is no problem. It's really something that I don't want to talk about. There's nothing to talk about. It's a new week." Note that he also said he'd play in week 1. But his chances for seeing action are much improved this week. "I feel (Jones) has a chance to go," head coach Bill Parcells said just before Friday's practice. "But I don't know if I will dress five backs." That means if he plays, Richie Anderson may sit. RB Garrison Hearst (Den) did not practice on Wednesday due to an injured ankle. He received an MRI, but his playing status for this weekend is not known. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Garrison Hearst (Den) does not have any structural damage in his ankle according to yesterday's MRI. However, he did not practice on Thursday and might sit this weekend. If Hearst can't play, Tatum Bell will be the team's backup RB. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Garrison Hearst (Den) did not practice on Friday and looks like a scratch for this weekend's game. Hearst will try to participate in the walk-through on Saturday, but he will likely be the #3 back at best. Tatum Bell should be the team's backup RB this weekend. RB Najeh Davenport (GB) will likely sit this weekend with a hamstring injury. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Najeh Davenport (GB) did not practice this week and will most likely sit this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Tony Hollings (Hou) suffered an injury to the same knee that had the torn ACL. The injury occurred in Thursday's practice without contact. An MRI is scheduled. At first glance, the team doesn't seem overly concerned. "He irritated his knee a little bit in the individual period today," head coach Dom Capers said. "They're going to take him in and take a look at it." *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Tony Hollings (Hou) has no structural damage in his knee but did not practice on Friday. He has been named a game-time decision for this weekend but will likely sit. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Moran Norris (Hou) looks like a game-time decision with a shoulder injury. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** FB Moran Norris (Hou) practiced on Friday and should see special teams action this weekend. RB James Mungro (Ind) practiced on Wednesday and should be able to play this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB James Mungro (Ind) practiced again on Thursday and should be available this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (Jac) practiced Wednesday and could return to action this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (Jac) only partially participated in Thursday's practice and did not practice on Friday. He should sit this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Fred Taylor (Jac) is still having some problems with the sore foot that sidelined him in the final two preseason games. The Jaguars announced that although he took part in the team drills in practice Thursday, the foot is sore and he was placed on the injury report as probable. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Fred Taylor (Jac) only partially participated in Friday's practice, but he will still start this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Omar Easy (KC) did not practice on Thursday and could sit this weekend with a knee injury. RB Lamar Gordon (Mia) is slated to start for the team this weekend. FB Rob Konrad (Mia) will miss another game due to a staph infection in his thigh. RB Travis Minor (Mia) will sit this weekend with his sprained right ankle. RB Sammy Morris (Mia) partially participated in Wednesday's practice but hopes to play this weekend despite an ankle injury. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Sammy Morris (Mia) again partially participated in Thursday's and Friday's practices and will most likely sit for this weekend's game. RB Michael Bennett (Min) is out for this weekend's game. RB Moe Williams (Min) has a sprained ankle. We'll have to see how he practices this week. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Moe Williams (Min) is not practicing and will sit this weekend. Mewelde Moore will be the team's backup RB this weekend. RB Onterrio Smith (Min) will have the appeal of his 4-game suspension heard on October 4th. That obviously means he'll be on the field until then. RB Kevin Faulk (NE) still has not rejoined the team and remains in Louisiana with family after the death of his mother. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Ki-Jana Carter (NO) has been re-signed by the team. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Deuce McAllister (NO) is not happy with the team's current offensive alignment. He does not like the 1-back / 2-TE set and wants to go back to using the FB. McAllister commented on his week one performance: "I couldn't get anything going," McAllister said. "There was nothing that was positive. I got to the point where I didn't care. I just put my head down and ran, got a couple of yards. I was just frustrated, not really with what we were trying to do with but with the fact that we weren't having any success." Offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy tried to deflect the criticism: "He could have run better, and he knows that," McCarthy said. "There was plenty of blame to go around." McCarthy says he is not ready to give up the one-back lineup after one game. However fullback Mike Karney will play more against San Francisco on Sunday, but that's a product of the game plan more than McAllister's persuasiveness. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Johnathan Reese (NYJ) has been waived by the team. RB Justin Fargas (Oak) has a turf toe injury that was suffered in week one action. He did not practice on Wednesday but still hopes to play this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Justin Fargas (Oak) has been named a game-time decision for this weekend's game due to his turf toe. If Fargas can't go, Amos Zereoue will take his spot in the game plan. RB Dorsey Levens (Phi) re-signed with the team. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Dorsey Levens (Phi) could see action this weekend, but his role has not been identified. FB Fred Beasley (SF) practiced on Wednesday. This is great news for Kevan Barlow owners and Beasley's presence was greatly missed in week one. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Fred Beasley (SF) practiced again on Thursday and should return to the starting lineup this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** FB Fred Beasley (SF) practiced on Friday and will return to the starting lineup. RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) is dealing with a bone bruise in his knee. Alexander did not practice on Wednesday but is improving and hopes to play this weekend. However, he will need to practice before HC Mike Holmgren will allow Alexander to play this weekend. "He has improved. My hope is he can practice maybe a little [Thursday] and if not [Thursday] then Friday," Holmgren said. "Then we'll see. We'll take it a day at a time. He is improving. He feels very positive." If he can't go, Maurice Morris will get the start. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) watched practice on Thursday but did not participate. He will most likely need to work on Friday before HC Mike Holmgren will allow him to play this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) participated in Friday's practice and was seen making his normal cuts and spin moves and didn't look like an injured player. "It went well," said Alexander. "I really didn't expect too much, but it went better than I thought it was going to be. I wanted to be able to push it and see if I could get it sore, and then we'll try to see how fast we can make it feel better." He expects to play this weekend, but Mike Holmgren (in his normal coachspeak) says Alexander will likely be a game-time decision. "I think Shaun moved around well enough to play," said Holmgren. "I've got to see how he responds to this tomorrow, and it will be a Sunday decision. [Morris] has practiced for the majority of the week, Shaun practiced a little bit today, which was one of the things I needed to see. But I really won't know until Sunday to see how everyone feels.". The worry with Alexander is that it according to Mike Holmgren, he needs to be well enough to start if he's going to play at all. "Shaun is one of our best players, so it's always important to have him available. But my feeling is, if he can't start the football game then I probably won't play him. I'll play him if he can play, but if he can't play...I don't think you can send any running back out there, unless if it's the Super Bowl, where the running back has some doubts about what they can do. That usually doesn't work very well. Like I said, we'll see what happens Sunday." Bottom line is that barring a setback, we think he'll start. For a detailed summary of all that we know on Alexander, check out our Flash Update news here for Sunday http://www.tflreport.com/content/flash04/fbg/00update~UID~1279.htm RB Chris Brown (Ten) did not practice on Wednesday but still hopes to play this weekend with an ankle injury. "Chris Brown did some running with our trainers and didn't participate in practice today, but we didn't expect him to," coach Jeff Fisher said. "We'll hope that today's work on the field didn't set him back and he'll be able to get some work done tomorrow." *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Brown (Ten) practiced Thursday. Signs are looking positive that he'll start and play this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Brown (Ten) practiced again on Friday but was a bit limited. He should be able to play this weekend. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Brown (Ten) made it through practices fine and looks to be the starter Sunday.
Wide Receivers WR Anquan Boldin (Ari) is still out with his injured knee. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Peerless Price (Atl) is dealing with an eye issue. According to Pro Football Weekly, there is more than a little concern over the cornea problem in Peerless Price's right eye, which has required him to wear a visor this season. Although Price claims he isn't worried about the injury -- he could go blind if he were poked in the eye -- the Falcons are concerned about what might happen should he suffer a big blow to the head. WR Travis Taylor (Bal) is officially listed as questionable with his injured groin, but it is looking like he will be rested for several weeks so he can fully recover. Randy Hymes is expected to start in place of Taylor. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Travis Taylor (Bal) did not practice on Thursday and should sit this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Travis Taylor (Bal) did not practice all week and is out this weekend. WR Steve Smith (Car) suffered a broken fibula last Monday night against the Packers. He likely will be out for 8 to 12 weeks. "He's not out for the season, but anything after that or short of that, I don't know," head coach John Fox said Tuesday afternoon. "But it's not season ending at this point." Keary Colbert will start with Smith out. WR Peter Warrick (Cin) rested his knee on Wednesday but should play this weekend. and should sit this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Peter Warrick (Cin) sat out again on Thursday and now isn't so sure to play this weekend. He's bothered by a serious shin bruise injury that is a different injury from the knee troubles he was recovering from this off season. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Peter Warrick (Cin) did not practice on Friday and received one-on-one work with team trainers instead. He looks like a game-time decision for this weekend's game. WR Randal Williams (Dal) is still out with a shoulder injury. WR Ashley Lelie (Den) injured his shoulder in Sunday's game but is listed as probable for this week. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Ashley Lelie (Den) practiced on Friday and should play this weekend. WR Charles Rogers (Det) will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his collarbone in week one action. It is the same collarbone that was broken last season. WR Tai Streets (Det) will start for the team in place of the injured Charles Rogers. WR Troy Walters (Ind) is out this weekend with a fractured arm. WR Samie Parker (KC) practiced on Wednesday but could sit this weekend with an injured hamstring. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Samie Parker (KC) did not practice on Thursday or Friday and should sit this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Troy Brown (NE) did not fully participate in Wednesday's practice but was able to get some work in. His status for this weekend's game is still iffy. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Troy Brown (NE) participated in the team's walk through on Friday but looks like a game-time decision for this weekend. WR Jamaar Taylor (NYG) is out this weekend with an injured hamstring. WR Jerry Rice (Oak) was healthy week one, but he saw decreased playing time as the young WRs Doug Gabriel, Ronald Curry, and Alvis Whitted played more. Rice met with HC Norv Turner on Wednesday to discuss the WR's role with the team. The conversation was not made public. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) did not practice on Friday. He has been downgraded to questionable and might sit this weekend with his injured shoulder. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) practiced on Saturday and should be able to play and likely start this Monday night. He had been downgraded to Questionable but has made a nice improvement. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Cedrick Wilson (SF) did not finish Friday's practice with a hamstring cramp, but the team expects him to be fine for this weekend's game. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Bobby Engram (Sea) did not practice on Friday and was added to the injury report with an injured groin. WR Koren Robinson (Sea) dropped three passes in week one and will change from a tinted visor to a clear visor. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Koren Robinson (Sea) has changed back to a tinted visor because his clear visor had a tendency to fog up on him during practice. WR Kevin Curtis (StL) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Kevin Curtis (StL) practiced on Friday and should play this weekend. WR Joey Galloway (TB) will miss several weeks with a groin injury. Charles Lee will start in his place. WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) did not practice on Wednesday and could miss another game recovering from knee surgery. He is improving though. "[Calico] was running better today," Jeff Fisher said. "He picked up the tempo yesterday and ran. Today he was doing some straight-line running and he added some lateral change of direction so that was encouraging." *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) missed practice again on Thursday and remains iffy to play this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) did not practice all week and should sit this weekend. *** SATURDAY UPDATE *** WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) is still having trouble moving laterally and will most likely sit this weekend. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Derrick Mason (Ten) was the subject of an ESPN report that said he might not play this weekend. Coach Jeff Fisher said that was not the case. "Derrick, who isn't different than anybody else, is tired and sore," Fisher said. But he practiced yesterday and he practiced today." Mason had his quad muscle tighten Wednesday. On Thursday, Mason said, "I got it loosened up. It's nothing major. I'll be all right." WR Jake Schifino (Ten) practiced on Wednesday and could play this weekend. *** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Jake Schifino (Ten) practiced again on Thursday. *** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Jake Schifino (Ten) practiced all week and should play this weekend.
