Bye Week Notice: Remember that Buffalo, Carolina, New England,
and NY Jets players are all on bye this week.
SATURDAY UPDATES
Quarterbacks
*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Mark Brunell (Was) practiced on Saturday and
has been named the team's starting QB for the Monday night game against
the Cowboys. "Mark took two-thirds of the work [on Saturday] and looked
good, so we'll start Mark," HC Joe Gibbs said. "He took some work Friday
and he felt okay. I think he feels comfortable with it. So hopefully he'll
be ready to go." Here are Mark Brunell's thoughts: "Obviously, in
practice, you'd like to get every rep, but I had a few more reps today
[Saturday] than I did earlier in the week," Brunell said. "I know the game
plan and I've watched a lot of film. So I'll be ready."
*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) will be the team's backup
QB this weekend.
Running Backs
*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Tatum Bell (Den) has been declared a game-time
decision for this weekend. "Tatum still has some sore ribs. He did not
practice today, and he'll be a game-time decision," Shanahan said. "He
took a handoff (against the Jacksonville Jaguars five days
earlier) and just didn't feel very good. He hasn't improved a whole lot."
The possibility of Bell playing with a flak jacket does exist. "I'm hoping
he can play without one," Shanahan said. "But we'll wait and see. It's an
area where he can get a shot for it, so hopefully he'll be able to go."
Tight Ends
*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** TE Desmond Clark (Chi) suffered a sprained ankle
in Friday's practice and has been added to the injury report as
questionable. He will be a game-time decision. Dustin Lyman will start
if Clark can't go.
Offensive Linemen

but will not start.
Defensive Linemen

should play this weekend.
Defensive Backs

Friday's practice and will not play this weekend.

in his left knee and will undergo surgery on Monday. Obviously, he is out
this weekend. Gibril Wilson will get the start.
Other
*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** The Pittsburgh / Miami game has been postponed
from its original 1:00 PM Eastern start time to 8:30 PM Eastern. However,
that time could still change if there are issues arising from Hurricane
Jeanne.
ALL OF THE NEWS
Quarterbacks
QB Jeff Garcia (Cle) is coming off the worst statistical game of his NFL
career (a 0.0 rating against the Cowboys).
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Matt Mauck (Den) has been released by the
team.
QB David Carr (Hou) did not practice on Wednesday due to stomach illness,
but he is expected to start as usual this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB David Carr (Hou) returned to practice as
expected on Thursday and will start this weekend.
QB Tommy Maddox (Pit) will miss 6 weeks with an injured elbow. Ben
Roethlisberger will start in place of Maddox. Brian St. Pierre will be
the team's #2 QB.
QB Neil O'Donnell (FA) has declined a request by the Steelers to return to
the NFL as the team's backup QB.
QB Drew Brees (SD) suffered a light concussion in week two but was able to
participate in the team's walkthrough on Monday and practice on Wednesday.
He expects to start as usual this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Drew Brees (SD) practiced all week and will start
this weekend.
QB Ken Dorsey (SF) will again start for the team this weekend as Tim
Rattay has not recovered from his injured shoulder and did not practice on
Wednesday. Note that when Rattay is healthy, he is not a lock to regain
the starting job.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Tim Rattay (SF) practiced on Thursday and could
be the team's backup QB this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Tim Rattay (SF) was able to get some snaps on
Friday and could serve as the team's backup QB this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Mark Brunell (Was) was very limited in
Thursday's practice and will likely sit this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** QB Mark Brunell (Was) practiced Friday for the first
time this week, taking about a third of the snaps on his strained
hamstring to keep alive his chances of playing Monday night against the
Dallas Cowboys. "It's not 100 percent," Brunell said. "Sure, there's a
little soreness, and it's a little tight, but it's better than yesterday;
so I'm pleased with that."
QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) will likely start this weekend to allow Mark
Brunell more time to recover from the hamstring injury that was suffered
in week two.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) took the vast majority of
the first team practice snaps on Thursday and will likely start this
weekend.
*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** QB Patrick Ramsey (Was) will be the team's backup
QB this weekend.
Running Backs
RB Warrick Dunn (Atl) did not practice on Wednesday due to a sprained
knee.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Warrick Dunn (Atl) returned to practice on
Thursday. He has been upgraded to probable on the team's injury report
and is expected to start this weekend. Said coach Jim Mora: "He did
everything today. He did everything, just like we thought he would and
he's fine. You know, sometimes running backs need a break on Wednesdays.
... He was fine. He did everything. He told me: 'I don't feel it at all.'
I'm going to take him at his word."
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Warrick Dunn (Atl) came back strong and practiced
again on Friday. He looks good to start as usual this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB James Lynch (Cin) has been released by the
team.
RB Dee Brown (Cle) has been released by the team.
RB Lee Suggs (Cle) did not fully participate in Wednesday's practice
session. Suggs has yet to take any contact as he attempts to return from
a neck stinger. The release of fellow RB Dee Brown could mean that Suggs
is nearing a return to action.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Lee Suggs (Cle) has finally resumed taking
contact, but it was only him and a blocking sled (and a trainer keeping a
close watch). He is still day-to-day and will need to improve greatly to
see the field this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Lee Suggs (Cle) partially participated in
Friday's practice but will most likely sit out this weekend's game. "He's
still not at 100 percent with his strength," HC Butch Davis said. "If and
when we do get him, it will be nice to have him back." The 'if and when'
is terribly pessimistic for this weekend and doesn't exactly bode well for
the next few weeks.
RB Richie Anderson (Dal) practiced on Wednesday and expects to play this
weekend.
RB Julius Jones (Dal) will miss at least two months and could be placed on
the IR list with a broken shoulder.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Tatum Bell (Den) missed most of Thursday's
practice due to a light rib injury. He is still expected to play this
weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Tatum Bell (Den) did not practice on Friday but
still should be able to play this weekend.
*** SATURDAY UPDATE *** RB Tatum Bell (Den) has been declared a game-time
decision for this weekend.
RB Quentin Griffin (Den) is still the man in Denver. HC Mike Shanahan
stood behind Griffin, saying he didn't want to overemphasize the fumble.
Overall, he has been pleased with the way Griffin has handled the ball.
"It wasn't somebody getting stripped, which is a big difference," Shanahan
said. "He'll be fine." Griffin doesn't appear to be in any danger of a
reduction in playing time. "I'm not concerned at all," Shanahan said.
RB Garrison Hearst (Den) did not practice on Wednesday but still hopes to
play this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Garrison Hearst (Den) only partially
participated in Thursday's practice and might rest for another week to
fully heal.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Garrison Hearst (Den) practiced on Friday and
should be available to play this weekend.
RB Olandis Gary (Det) has been released by the team.
RB Najeh Davenport (GB) did not practice on Wednesday and could easily sit
another week to let his hamstring fully heal.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Najeh Davenport (GB) missed practice again on
Thursday and should sit this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Najeh Davenport (GB) did not practice all week
and is very unlikely to play this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Nick Luchey (GB) practiced on Thursday and
should play this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** FB Nick Luchey (GB) practiced on Friday and should
play this weekend.
RB Tony Hollings (Hou) did not practice on Wednesday (he merely ran on the
sidelines) and could sit another week with his injured knee.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Tony Hollings (Hou) is likely out for this
weekend's game.
RB Ran Carthon (Ind) has the perfect first name for an RB. Plus, he has
been signed the Colts off the Cowboy's practice squad.
RB Edgerrin James (Ind) said on Monday that he plans to play this weekend,
but he did not practice on Wednesday. He is nursing a hamstring injury
and is questionable to see action against the Packers. At the very least,
it looks like Dominic Rhodes will get a few more carries. If James can
not go, Rhodes will start with James Mungro as the team's backup RB.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) practiced very well on
Thursday and will start this weekend if he does not suffer a setback. HC
Tony Dungy says that James will start if he feels fine and practices on
Friday. "Edgerrin actually did well -- surprisingly well," Dungy said as
the Colts prepared to play host to the Packers this Sunday. "Based on what
I saw today, he could probably play." Stay tuned for how he does
Friday: "If he comes back [Friday] and doesn't have any side effects --
and is able to do just what he did today -- I would think he'll probably
play," Dungy said. Even if he does go, expect Dominic Rhodes to see a
little time.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Edgerrin James (Ind) practiced again on Friday
and will most likely start this weekend. "He did fine today," HC Tony
Dungy said. "Right now, I'll assume that he'll probably play." Even if
James can play, backup running back Dominic Rhodes likely will play
extensively Sunday, Dungy said. James may be kept on a play count Sunday,
Dungy said. "It won't be so much a total play count," Dungy said. "It
will probably be six plays, then out; eight plays, out - something like
that. We'll see how he goes."
With that in mind, consider Marvin Harrison and his return to action last
season. After missing Week 11 again the Jets, Harrison returned the
following week with the idea that he would see a limited number of plays.
Harrison rarely came off the field and caught 6 balls for 47 yards. The
point is that if James looks good on Sunday then he will see tons of
action.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB James Mungro (Ind) should be available to play
this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Dominic Rhodes (Ind) will likely see a decent
amount of carries this weekend in order to keep James fresh.
RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (Jac) practiced on Wednesday and hopes to return
to action this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (Jac) practiced on
Thursday and could be available this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Omar Easy (KC) practiced on Wednesday and
Thursday and should play this weekend.
RB Priest Holmes (KC) did not practice on Wednesday and will likely not
play this weekend due to his injured ankle. Derrick Blaylock is expected
to start for the team if Holmes does sit.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Priest Holmes (KC) did not practice again on
Thursday and looks like a scratch for this weekend. "Priest worked out a
little bit at the end of practice," said HC Dick Vermeil. "He did just
some jogging and starting exercises and figure eights and all that. He
felt pretty good about that. I think he's questionable to doubtful.
Asked directly if he was optimistic about Holmes playing on Sunday Vermeil
replied, "No, we're preparing to play without him. I think that's our best
approach. Personally I wouldn't want to play him if he wasn't really
ready.
"I wouldn't want to injure it further to the point where he misses more
ballgames. It's not that we don't need him, but I think we owe it to him
to make sure he's really right before we just stick him in there."
It should be noted that Holmes himself is still holding out hope he can
play. Stay tuned.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Priest Holmes (KC) took a step towards playing
this weekend and practiced on Friday participating in about 75% of the
work. He looked much improved and HC Dick Vermeil was pleased with his
progress. "We'll see how he feels tomorrow and take it all the way to
Sunday," Vermeil said. "He was a little better than I thought he would be.
He is absolutely a miracle man. He absolutely amazes me. Whatever he puts
his mind to doing, he has unbelievable power to do it, and I think he's
made up his mind that he's going to play. All I know is that anything he's
ever told me he's going to do, he's done."
"He and I visited this morning," Vermeil said, "and I said, `Priest, if
you can really play at the level it takes to satisfy you as a player
without injuring your ankle to the point that you would miss a few
ballgames, then you'll be all right. But if it's not that way, then you
are going to watch them play and support them and get ready to play next
week.' "
Holmes practiced with an ankle brace Friday and was running with a slight
limp. However he made sharp cuts in practice and seemed to have excellent
mobility. This will most likely be a game-time decision, but at this
point, most are expecting him to be ready.
RBs Robert Edwards & Brock Forsey (FA) worked out for the Miami Dolphins.
RB Lamar Gordon (Mia) practiced on Wednesday and should start this weekend
despite an ailing back.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Lamar Gordon (Mia) practiced on Thursday and
will start this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Lamar Gordon (Mia) practiced all week and will
start this weekend.
FB Rob Konrad (Mia) did not practice on Wednesday and will likely miss
another week with an infection in his thigh.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** FB Rob Konrad (Mia) did not practice on Thursday
and should sit again this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** FB Rob Konrad (Mia) will miss another week.
FB Jamar Martin (Mia) has been re-signed by the team.
RB Travis Minor (Mia) is still out with an injured ankle.
RB Sammy Morris (Mia) practiced on Wednesday and should play this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Sammy Morris (Mia) practiced on Thursday and
should play this weekend.
RB Michael Bennett (Min) is improving and was able to practice on
Wednesday, but he will likely sit this weekend as it looks like Moe
Williams will be able to go.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) partially participated in
Thursday's practice and will likely sit out another game.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Michael Bennett (Min) was ruled out for Sunday's
game against the Chicago Bears, but a new exam on his injured knee showed
he should be ready following the team's bye week.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Mewelde Moore (Min) practiced on Thursday and
should play this weekend.
RB Moe Williams (Min) practiced on Wednesday and should be able to play
this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Moe Williams (Min) is improving. He practiced
well on Thursday and should play this weekend.
RB Kevin Faulk (NE) has rejoined the team after spending two weeks with
family in Louisiana (following the passing of his mother). When he left,
Faulk was nursing an injured knee. The status of that knee is not fully
known.
RB Ki-Jana Carter (NO) has been re-signed by the team.
RB Deuce McAllister (NO) did not practice on Wednesday and (even though he
is only listed as questionable for this weekend) will likely miss 4 to 5
weeks with a partial ligament tear in his ankle. Aaron Stecker will start
in place of McAllister with Ki-Jana Carter getting some carries as well.
RB Mike Cloud (NYG) may yet replace Dayne as the team's short yardage
back. Last season as a Patriot, Cloud converted on six of nine short
yardage conversions (2 yards or less for a TD or first down). However,
Cloud needs to be active to get on the field. Last week, Cloud was
deactivated as HC Tom Coughlin decided depth was needed at other
positions.
RB Ron Dayne (NYG) practiced on Wednesday and hopes to play this weekend
despite a calf injury.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Ron Dayne (NYG) practiced again on Thursday and
should play this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Ron Dayne (NYG) practiced all week and has been
upgraded to probable for this weekend.
RB LaMont Jordan (NYJ) has been the subject of trade rumors (with Dallas,
Oakland, and Tampa Bay as possible destinations). However, GM Terry
Bradway maintains that Jordan will remain a Jet for the entire 2004
season. Of course in NFL circles, that kind of statement is often
followed by a trade being completed within the week so we'll stay on top
of this.
RB Justin Fargas (Oak) practiced on Wednesday and should be able to play
this weekend. If Fargas is active, Amos Zereoue will likely not be.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Justin Fargas (Oak) practiced on Thursday but
has been named a game-time decision for this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Justin Fargas (Oak) practiced again on Friday and
now is expected to play this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Verron Haynes (Pit) did not practice on
Wednesday but did take part in Thursday's session. He hopes to be able to
play this weekend.

injured toe as he only did some light running on Thursday. Still, he is
expected to start this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB LaDainian Tomlinson (SD) practiced on Friday and
will start as usual this weekend.
RB Kevan Barlow (SF) bruised his ribs in week two but was expected to
start as usual this weekend. However, Barlow slightly sprained his MCL
and did not finish practice on Wednesday. He says he fully expects to
start week three.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** RB Kevan Barlow (SF) has a slight MCL sprain. He
practiced on Thursday and (barring a setback) should start this weekend as
usual.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Kevan Barlow (SF) practiced fully Friday and
looks ready to play Sunday.
RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) looked fine after the week two game and should
fully participate in practice this week.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** RB Shaun Alexander (Sea) has practiced all week
despite some knee soreness and will start as usual this weekend.

the Dolphins according to an independent arbitrator.
Wide Receivers
WR Anquan Boldin (Ari) is still out with his injured knee.

until sometime in November. This is longer absence than what was
originally expected for Boldin as he was planning a mid-October return.

Wednesday or Thursday and should sit this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Brian Finneran (Atl) did not practice on Friday
and will likely sit this weekend.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Dez White (Atl) tweaked his ankle during Friday's
practice and did not finish the session. He has been added to the injury
report as probable but should play this weekend. If White can't go, Jimmy
Farris will get the start with Michael Jenkins moving up to the #3 WR
role.
WR Travis Taylor (Bal) did not practice on Wednesday and is still likely 2
to 3 weeks away from returning from his groin injury.
WR Daryl Jones (Chi) has been released by the team.
WR Peter Warrick (Cin) did not practice on Wednesday in order to rest his
shin. He is expected to play as usual this weekend.

to action this weekend.

Thursday but still could sit this weekend.

despite a knee sprain.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Joe Horn (NO) practiced on Thursday and Friday
and will start as usual this weekend.
WR Jamaar Taylor (NYG) practiced on Wednesday and hopes to return to
action this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Jamaar Taylor (NYG) practiced on Thursday and
could play this weekend.
WR Jerry Rice (Oak) caught zero passes in week two for the first time
since December of 1985, but he has a new streak going. He and HC Norv
Turner spent their second consecutive Monday meeting behind closed doors.
WR Todd Pinkston (Phi) practiced on Wednesday and should play this
weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Brandon Lloyd (SF) left practice early on
Thursday and underwent an MRI on his groin. The results are not known,
but Lloyd says he will practice on Friday. Still, a "slight pull" in a
WR's groin is not good news.
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Brandon Lloyd (SF) suffered a Grade 2 sprain in
his groin in Thursday's practice. This is not a debilitating injury, but
it is something that could nag Lloyd for the remainder of the season. He
is officially a game-time decision, but it would be a surprise if he
plays. Curtis Conway will likely get the start.

like he'll recover and play.
WR Joey Galloway (TB) is still out with a groin injury.
WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) still is not practicing and could miss another
game.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) partially participated in
Thursday's practice (working with the scout team) and could possibly play
this weekend although we're not too optimistic. "He did well. He ran some
routes with the offense and worked against the defense, head coach Jeff
Fisher said. "It was the first time he has had a helmet on doing those
things, so it was good to see. I would say he has a chance."
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Tyrone Calico (Ten) had no ill-effects Friday
after practicing Thursday, but head coach Jeff Fisher won't determine his
final status until just before kickoff. "No problems", the coach said when
asked about Calico after Friday's practice. "He wasn't sore at all, which
is good. He is a game time decision. ..."
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** WR Jake Schifino (Ten) practiced Thursday and Friday
and should play this weekend.

4 weeks with a sprained ankle. Dan Wilcox is expected to get the start.

*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** TE Kyle Brady (Jac) did not practice on Thursday
and is out this weekend.
*** THURSDAY UPDATE *** TE Tony Gonzalez (KC) practiced on Wednesday and
Thursday and will start as usual this weekend. There were rumbles around
Kansas City this week when FOX analyst and former Chief, Bill Maas
suggested Gonzalez' foot injury was more serious and limiting than the
team was admitting. Coach Dick Vermeil adamantly denied this idea. "Tony
Gonzalez is a better football player right now than he's ever been since
I've been around. He's more explosive, a better run blocker and is faster
in his pass routes. He's rolling through routes rather than
stutter-stepping."
*** FRIDAY UPDATE *** TE Tony Gonzalez (KC) practiced on Friday and will
start as expected this weekend.
TE Kris Wilson (KC) is still out with a broken ankle.
TE Jermaine Wiggins (Min) will miss 2 to 3 weeks with a broken hand.
Wiggins was filling in for the injured Jim Kleinsasser. That leaves TE #3
Richard Owens as the team's primary TE.
TE Jeremy Shockey (NYG) still is not all the way back to game condition.
He also said he is adjusting to an unaccustomed role. "They have me doing
some things I'm not used to doing, like blocking in the backfield and
stuff," he said. "It'll come. I just haven't really practiced it. We'll
see how it goes."
TE Roland Williams (Oak) did not practice on Wednesday but could play this
weekend.

Johnson will be active for the first time this season.
