Tidbits - Week 14



Arizona Cardinals (vs. San Francisco)

  • The Cardinals are 10-16 lifetime against the 49ers
  • The Cardinals have lost their last three games, scoring only 25 total points in the process
  • Inauspicious debut for rookie QB John Navarre who suffered through a 45% passing performance with one touchdown pass against four interceptions
  • The Cardinals three quarterbacks have combined for a low 5.82 yards per attempt, 9 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.  Think the Cardinals will be looking at drafting a quarterback in the 2005 NFL Draft?
  • Promising tidbit.  Last year the Cardinals gave up 24+ points in eleven games.  This year, they have surrendered 24 points or more only four times
  • The Cardinals are 3-2 at home this season
  • In the last two games, RB Emmitt Smith has only carried the ball 14 times for 47 yards without scoring
  • WR Larry Fitzgerald has only caught four passes for 33 yards in the last two games
  • WR Anquan Boldin has caught four or more passes in all six games since returning from injury but is averaging less than 10 yards per reception and hasn’t scored a touchdown

Atlanta Falcons (vs. Oakland)

  • The Falcons are 3-7 lifetime against the Raiders
  • QB Michael Vick has thrown for less than 197 yards in nine of the twelve games this year
  • Vick has led the team in rushing in six of the twelve games played this year
  • Last season the Falcons gave up 30+ points in a game seven times.  This year they have allowed that amount only once
  • Prior to last week’s shutout loss, the Falcons had won four games in a row
  • The Falcons are 5-1 at home this season
  • Vick is only on pace to throw for 2,639 yards this season
  • RB Warrick Dunn has only rushed for more than 76 yards once this season (week three)
  • Dunn hasn’t scored a touchdown in the last four games
  • RB TJ Duckett hasn’t rushed for more than 63 yards in a game this year
  • WR Peerless Price has been horrible this year.  He has caught only two passes in nine of the twelve games this season and is on pace for 39 receptions on the season.  Not what you want out of your # 1 receiver

Baltimore Ravens (vs. New York Giants)

  •  The Ravens and Giants have played only once with the Ravens prevailing 24-23
  • The Ravens have lost two games in a row for the first time since the mid-way point of the 2003 season
  • The Ravens haven’t lost three games in a row since their Super Bowl season (year 2000)
  • The Ravens are 4-2 on home turf this year
  • The Ravens have surrendered 51 points in the last two games after allowing only 61 total points in the previous five games
  • After a couple of good weeks (weeks 10,11), QB Kyle Boller has fallen back to earth.  He has completed only 50% of his passes in the last two weeks with a horrible YPA of 3.94 without throwing a touchdown pass
  • Boller is on pace to throw for only 2,415 yards on the year despite taking every single snap this season
  • On the season, RB Jamal Lewis is averaging 4.1 yards per carry while Chester Taylor is averaging 4.6
  • TE Todd Heap caught three passes for 22 yards in his first game back

Buffalo Bills (vs. Cleveland)

  • The Bills are 4-8 lifetime against the Browns
  • The streaking Bills have now won five of their last six games and are now 6-6 after beginning the season 0-4
  • The Bills: Offensive Juggernaut? The Bills have scored 117 points in the last three games
  • RB Willis McGahee has rushed for 307 yards in the last three weeks
  • The Bills have allowed 20 or fewer points in nine of their twelve games this year
  • The Bills next three games are against opponents with a combined record of 10-26
  • The Bills are 4-2 at home this year and have won their last four
  • The Bills are up to 12th overall in the NFL in points scored
  • Last week, QB Drew Bledsoe threw four touchdown passes.  That marked the first time since week four of the 2002 season he hit that mark
  • McGahee has had 194 carries in the last eight weeks for 747 yards and scored seven times
  • WR Eric Moulds is on pace to finish with 1,120 receiving yards
  • WR Lee Evans is emerging as a fantasy threat.  He has caught 10 passes for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns in the last two weeks

Carolina Panthers (vs. St. Louis)
  • The Panthers are 7-7 lifetime against the Rams
  • The Panthers are on fire.  They have won their past four games by a combined score of 125 to 72
  • In the first seven games, the Panthers managed to score more than 20 points only once.  In the last five games, they have scored no less than 21 points
  • The Panthers are only 2-4 at home this season but have won their past two
  • Reserve running back Nick Goings, playing only because of injuries to other players, has had three straight 100-yard rushing games
  • O.K.  Hands up.  Who predicted the Panthers leading rusher this season would be Nick Goings?  Anyone?  ANYONE?  I didn’t think so.
  • QB Jake Delhomme completed 113 of 204 passes (55.4%) of his throws in the first six games of the year with 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.  Since then he has completed 60% of his throws with 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions
  • WR Muhsin Muhammad has already caught 10 touchdown passes this season.  His former high was 8 touchdowns set in 1999
  • In the last six games, Muhammad has caught 40 passes for 672 yards and 8 touchdowns

Chicago Bears (@ Jacksonville)

  •  The Bears are 2-1 lifetime against the Jaguars
  • The Bears are 3-3 on the road this season
  • The Bears 4th quarterback of the season, Chad Hutchinson completed 60.0% of his passes and threw three touchdowns last week against the Vikings
  • The Bears have used eleven different quarterbacks since the 2000 season
  • The Bears haven’t had one quarterback lead the team in passing for three straight seasons since Jim Harbaugh in the early 90s
  • The Bears are 4-2 in their last six games
  • RB Thomas Jones hasn’t carried the ball 20 times in a game since week six.
  • Jones has scored only one touchdown in the last ten weeks
  • WR David Terrell finally caught a touchdown last week after 23 straight games without one
  • Terrell is on pace for a career high of 701 receiving yards

Cincinnati Bengals (@ New England)
  • The Bengals are 8-10 lifetime against the Patriots
  • The Bengals have won four of their last five games to improve to 6-6 on the season
  • The Rise of QB Carson Palmer… He has thrown for 633 yards in the last two games
  • WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh has quietly had his finest season as a pro with 46 receptions for 655 yards and 3 touchdowns
  • The Bengals are 2-4 on the road but have won their last two
  • Palmer has thrown 9 touchdown passes in the last three weeks
  • In his firs season, Palmer is completing 60% of his throws and is on pace to finish with 3,593 passing yards
  • RB Rudi Johnson is 6th in the NFL with 1,108 rushing yards
  • WR Chad Johnson is up to third in the NFL with 1,071 receiving yards

Cleveland Browns (@ Buffalo)
  • The Browns are 8-4 lifetime against the Bills
  • The Browns have lost six straight games after starting the season 3-3
  • The Browns have surrendered 100 points in the last two games
  • The Browns are 0-5 on the road this year
  • WR Antonio Bryant is emerging as a legitimate threat for the Browns.  He has scored four touchdowns in the last two weeks to go along with 246 receiving yards
  • RB Lee Suggs hasn’t had a 100-yard rushing performance this season but did manage a 100-yard receiving effort back in week six
  • In the last four weeks, RB William Green has carried the ball 43 times for only 132 yards

Dallas Cowboys (vs. New Orleans)

  • The Cowboys are 14-6 lifetime against the Saints
  • The Cowboys are 3-3 at home this year
  • The Cowboys have won two games in a row and are back in the playoff hunt
  • What a great three game stretch for RB Julius Jones to prove he belongs in the NFL.  He has carried the ball 93 times for 429 yards and scored five times
  • WR Keyshawn Johnson had his 2nd 100-yard receiving game of the season last week and is on pace to finish with 1,031 receiving yards
  • TE Jason Whitten has caught 3 or more passes in eleven of the twelve games this year.  He is on pace to catch 84 passes

Denver Broncos (vs. Miami)
  • The Broncos are 2-9-1 lifetime against the Dolphins
  • The Broncos are 2-4 in their last six games
  • QB Jake Plummer has thrown for at least 221 yards in each of those six games
  • WR Ashley Lelie has led the team in receiving yardage in five games this year as has WR Rod Smith
  • In the first six games, the Broncos gave up only 12.3 points per game.  Since then they have allowed 22.5 points per game
  • The Broncos are 4-2 at home on the year
  • RB Reuben Droughns has rushed for 100 yards in six of the last eight games but the Chargers held him to only 38 yards last week
  • Droughns has scored a touchdown in three straight games
  • WR Rod Smith is on pace to finish with 1,117 receiving yards and WR Ashley Lelie is on pace to finish with 1,105 yards

Detroit Lions (@ Green Bay)

  • The Lions are 63-80-7 lifetime against the Packers
  • Prior to the Lions win last week, they had lost five games in a row
  • The Lions have lost three straight road games
  • The Rise of Rookie RB Kevin Jones.  He has rushed for 395 yards in the last three weeks and is now averaging 4.8 yards per carry on the season
  • Despite his problems as of late, QB Joey Harrington has still completed 57.0% of his throws with 15 touchdown passes against only 8 interceptions
  • Rookie WR Roy Williams hasn’t had a 100-yard receiving game since week three and hasn’t scored since week seven

Green Bay Packers (vs. Detroit)

  • The Packers are 80-63-7 lifetime against the Lions
  • The Packers have won their past three home games and scored 120 points in the process
  • Prior to last week’s embarrassment against the Eagles, the Packers had won six straight games
  • The Packers crushed the Lions 38-10 in Detroit earlier this season
  • Last week, the Eagles crushed the Packers by 30 points (47 to 17).  The Packers hadn’t lost by 30+ points since the 1990 season.  The team that beat them that week?  That’s right, the Philadelphia Eagles
  • RB Ahman Green hasn’t scored a touchdown since week eight
  • WR Javon Walker has scored in eight of the twelve games this season

Houston Texans (vs. Indianapolis)

  • The Texans have never defeated the Colts in five contests
  • The Texans are only 1-4 in their last five games
  • The Texans are 3-3 at home this year
  • In the first eight games this season, QB David Carr averaged 270.3 passing yards per game.  Since then he has averaged only 184.3 yards per game
  • The Texans have scored 14 points or less in four of the last five games
  • In the last five games, Carr has thrown only 3 touchdowns while being picked off 6 times
  • RB Domanick Davis has scored seven times in the last five weeks
  • WR Andre Johnson is over 1,000 receiving yards on the season (1,018 yards) and has had four 100-yard receiving games

Indianapolis Colts (@ Houston)

  •  The Colts are 5-0 lifetime against the Texans
  • The Colts have won their past five games by a combined score of 213 to 85
  • WR Brendan Stokley has led the team in receiving yards in five games this season.  WR Reggie Wayne has led the team in five games and WR Marvin Harrison has led the team only three times (tied Wayne in week eight)
  • QB Peyton Manning has tied Dan Marino for the 2nd highest passing touchdown total in NFL history with 44.  He has to throw five more to eclipse Marino’s all-time record of 48 scores in a season
  • Only three quarterbacks have ever hit 40 touchdowns in a season (Manning, Marino and Kurt Warner)
  • The Colts have score more than 30 points in nine of the twelve games this year
  • RB Edgerrin James is the second leading rusher in the NFL with 1,291 yards
  • Manning projects out to… 4,828 passing yards, 59 touchdown passes against only 12 interceptions while completing 68.1% of his throws.  WOW!
  • The Colts three leading receivers are still within 12 yards on one another (Stokley has 882, Wayne has 875 and Harrison has 870)
  • All three receivers are on pace for 12+ touchdown receptions

Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. Chicago)

  • The Jaguars are 1-2 lifetime against the Bears
  • The Jaguars have lost three in a row and four of the last five
  • The Jaguars have scored sixteen points or less in four of the last five games
  • The Jaguars are 3-3 at home this year
  • QB Byron Leftwich has a solid completion percentage of 63.5% this season to go along with a YPA of 7.2
  • RB Fred Taylor has had four straight games with at least 21 carries but hasn’t scored a touchdown in the last six weeks
  • WR Jimmy Smith has been cold the last three weeks with only 10 receptions for 149 yards and no touchdowns

Kansas City Chiefs (@ Tennessee)

  • The Chiefs are 25-18 lifetime against the Titans franchise
  • The Chiefs have scored 20+ points in nine of their twelve games this year but are still only 4-8 on the year
  • RB Larry Johnson had his finest game as a pro last week with 118 rushing yards and a touchdown
  • Johnson has three touchdowns in limited touches this year
  • QB Trent Green has thrown for 300+ yards in six of the last eight games
  • The Chiefs are 2-4 on the road this year
  • Green is on pace to throw for 4,520 yards this season
  • The Chiefs have 23 rushing touchdowns on the season
  • WR Eddie Kennison has caught four touchdowns in the last four games
  • TE Tony Gonzalez is on pace to finish with 1,160 yards this year

Miami Dolphins (@ Denver)

  • The Dolphins are 9-2-1 lifetime against the Broncos
  • In the first six games this year, the Dolphins averaged 9.1 points per game.  Since then they have averaged 23.5 points per game
  • The Good News… QB A.J. Feeley had his first 300-yard, 3 touchdown passing game.  The Bad News… he threw 5 interceptions to go along with it
  • The Dolphins are 1-5 on the road this season
  • Dolphins’ quarterbacks have 15 touchdown passes against 22 interceptions on the season
  • QB A.J. Feeley has been terrible.  His completion percentage is only 52.3%, his YPA is poor at only 5.6 and he has thrown 8 touchdown passes against 14 interceptions.  Quarterback of the future?  Only if that future is bleak.
  • RB Travis Minor is averaging 3.9 yards per carry.  On the Dolphins, that is world-class
  • WR Chris Chambers has caught 6 touchdowns on the season

Minnesota Vikings (vs. Seattle)

  • The Vikings are 3-5 lifetime against the Seahawks
  • The Vikings are 2-4 in the last six games
  • The Vikings have only had two 100-yard rushing performances in a game this season (both by rookie RB Mewelde Moore)
  • The Vikings are 5-1 at home this year
  • Why aren’t the Vikings running the ball more?  The four-headed monster at running back has combined for only 1,083 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns despite a 5.0 YPC average
  • Three Vikings’ receivers have six or more touchdown receptions this season (Moss, Burleson and Robinson)
  • Since week six, TE Jermaine Wiggins has caught 41 passes for 455 yards and 4 touchdowns

New England Patriots (vs. Cincinnati)

  • The Patriots are 10-8 lifetime against the Bengals
  • The Patriots have given up 20 points or less in nine of the twelve games this year
  • The Patriots are 6-0 at home this season and have outscored the opposition 147 to 70
  • The Patriots haven’t lost at home since the 2002 season
  • The Patriots have scored the first points in seventeen straight games (last team to score first was the Texans last season)
  • RB Corey Dillon has rushed for 584 yards in the last five games
  • The Patriots current winning streak is up to five games and have outscored their opponents 162 to 65
  • QB Tom Brady has only thrown two touchdown passes in the last three weeks
  • What a difference Dillon has made.  He is averaging 111 rushing yards per game and hasn’t rushed for less than 79 yards in a game this year
  • WR David Givens has disappeared.  He has caught 10 passes in the last three weeks for 70 yards and no scores
  • TE Daniel Graham hasn’t caught a touchdown pass since week five

New Orleans Saints (@ Dallas)

  • The Saints are 6-14 lifetime against the Cowboys
  • The Saints have lost four of their last five games
  • Ugly trend of the year… The Saints have given up 20+ points in every game this season
  • The Saints are 2-3 on the road this year
  • WR Joe Horn is on pace for a career best 1,467 receiving yards
  • Are the Saints the slowest starting team in NFL history?  In the last nine games, they have been outscored (get ready for this) 94 to 0 in the first quarter.  94 to 0, are you kidding me?  That is inexcusable at any level of football but especially in the NFL.
  • RB Deuce McAllister has suffered through a forgettable season.  He is only averaging 4.0 yards per carry and has only rushed for 634 yards on the year and added 28 receptions
  • Last year in mid-season, McAllister had nine straight 100-yard rushing performances.  This year he has had only three all season

New York Giants (@ Baltimore)

  • The Ravens and Giants have played only once with the Ravens prevailing 24-23
  • The Giants have now lost five games in a row and are now 5-7 after starting the year 4-1
  • Rookie QB Eli Manning has been brutal.  He is only completing 41.3% of his throws and has a single touchdown pass against 4 interceptions
  • The Giants have only scored 37 points in the last four games
  • The Giants are 3-3 on the road this year
  • RB Tiki Barber needs 204 more rushing yards to set his career high.  His current best is 1,386 rushing yards during the 2002 season
  • Barber has had 100 total yards in ten of the twelve games this year
  • Receivers Ike Hilliard and Amani Toomer still haven’t scored a touchdown this season

New York Jets (@ Pittsburgh)

  • The Jets have only 2 wins in sixteen lifetime meetings between these teams
  • The Jets have now won three games in a row thanks to ferocious defensive play (only 17 points allowed in three games)
  • The Jets are 4-2 on the road this season
  • The Jets are only giving up 3.3 yards per carry over the last three weeks
  • RB Curtin Martin is on pace for 1,740 rushing yards this season
  • The best defense in the NFL when it comes to points allowed is the… New York Jets
  • Martin has already scored 12 touchdowns on the year.  That is his best mark since he scored 17 touchdowns with the Patriots back in 1996
  • WR Santana Moss is averaging an impressive 21.4 yards per reception but has caught only 31 passes and scored just twice
  • WR Justin McCareins is leading the team with 38 receptions on the season
  • QB Chad Pennington is still a model of efficiency.  He has completed 67.5% of his throws with 11 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions

Oakland Raiders (@ Atlanta)

  • The Raiders are 7-3 lifetime against the Falcons
  • The Raiders are 2-2 in the last four games
  • QB Kerry Collins has found his groove.  He has passed for 1753 yards in the last six weeks
  • In the last eight weeks, the Raiders haven’t had a running back rush for more than 70 yards in a game
  • The Raiders are only 2-4 on the road this season but have won their last two
  • In the last three games, Collins has thrown 9 touchdown passes against only 2 interceptions
  • WR Ronald Curry who was emerging as a threat is out for the season with a torn tendon.  He had 19 receptions for 309 yards and 4 touchdowns in the prior three weeks
  • The Raiders have rushed for only 859 yards this season.  That is the lowest amount in the NFL.  Think the Raiders will look for a feature running back in the offseason?
  • WR Jerry Porter has scored four touchdowns in the last two weeks

Philadelphia Eagles (@ Washington)

  • The Eagles are 62-73-6 lifetime against the Redskins
  • The Eagles have won four straight since suffering a loss to the Steelers.  In those four games, they have outscored their opponents, 151 to 50
  • The Eagles have held their opponents under 20 points in nine of the twelve games this year
  • The Eagles have scored 27+ points in nine of the twelve games this year
  • QB Donovan McNabb threw for a career high 464 yards last week against the Packers in a big-time statement game for the team
  • What a season McNabb is having.  He is on pace to throw for 4,475 yards and 37 touchdowns against only 7 interceptions
  • RB Brian Westbrook has scored eight touchdowns in the last four weeks
  • The Eagles are 5-1 on the road this season
  • The Eagles beat the Redskins 28 to 6 three weeks ago in a game that was pretty close through three quarters
  • RB Brian Westbrook started slow this season but is up to 1,271 total yards and 9 touchdowns
  • WR Terrell Owens needs three more touchdowns to set a career high.  His current record is 16 set during the 2001 season
  • Owens has had at least 13 touchdown receptions in four of the last five seasons
  • The other Eagles’ receivers have combined for only one touchdown pass

Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. New York Jets)

  • The Steelers are 14-2 lifetime against the Jets
  • The Steelers have now won ten games in a row
  • The Steelers haven’t given up more than 20 points in a game since week five
  • Rookie QB Ben Roethlisberger has completed 67.7% of his throws and has 14 touchdowns against 6 interceptions
  • The Steelers are only averaging 10.0 points against in the last five contests
  • The Steelers are undefeated at home this season
  • RB Duce Staley rushed for 51 yards on 17 carries against the Jaguars in his first game back since week eight
  • RB Jerome Bettis only got 3 carries against the Jaguars after carrying the ball 122 times in the previous four weeks
  • WR Hines Ward is on pace for 85 receptions and 5 touchdowns.  Not a bad season for most receivers but not up to past Ward standards

San Diego Chargers (vs. Tampa Bay)

  • The Chargers are 6-1 lifetime against the Buccaneers
  • The Chargers have won eight of their last nine games
  • The Chargers have scored 20+ points in ten of their twelve games this year
  • The Chargers have held their opponents under 18 points in five of the last six games
  • The Chargers haven’t started a season 9-3 since the 1994 season when they went to the Super Bowl
  • The Chargers are 5-1 at home this year
  • The Chargers offense has scored 40 touchdowns this season.  They haven’t managed that through a full season since 1986.
  • RB LaDainian Tomlinson’s yards per carry and receptions are down this year but he has scored in nine straight games and in seventeen of his last eighteen games
  • TE Antonio Gates has caught 11 touchdown passes this season

San Francisco 49ers (@ Arizona)

  • The 49ers are 16-10 lifetime against the Cardinals
  • The 49ers have mailed it in.  They have been outscored 26 to 75 in the last three games
  • The 49ers have only had one 100-yard rushing performance on the year (Kevan Barlow, way back in week two)
  • The 49ers have scored under twenty points in eight of the twelve games this year
  • The 49ers are 0-6 on the road this year
  • RB Kevin Barlow is averaging 3.2 yards per carry on the year and only 2.8 since week three
  • TE Eric Johnson is leading the team in both receptions (67) and receiving yardage (699)

Seattle Seahawks (@ Minnesota)

  • The Seahawks are 5-3 against the Vikings
  • The Seahawks are 3-3 on the road this season
  • RB Shaun Alexander is the first player in NFL history to have four straight 15-touchdown seasons.  That is remarkable
  • The Seahawks only allowed 13 points in the first three games this season.  They have allowed 253 points in the last nine
  • Alexander is on pace to rush for a career-best 1,697 yards this year and score 20 touchdowns
  • QB Matt Hasselbeck threw for 414 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Cowboys on Monday night and the team still lost
  • Despite dropping two many passes, WR Darrell Jackson is still on pace to finish with 1,211 receiving yards
  • WR Jerry Rice had perhaps his last great game last week.  He caught 8 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown and proved he can still get it done

St. Louis Rams (@ Carolina)

  • The Rams are 7-7 lifetime against the Panthers
  • The Rams have lost four of their last six games
  • The Rams have lost three straight road games by a combined score of 48 to 113
  • The Rams have scored less than 24 points in six straight games (the first such streak since the 1998 season)
  • QB Marc Bulger is on pace to finish with 4,385 passing yards
  • RB Steven Jackson enjoyed his first 100-yard rushing game in relief of RB Marshall Faulk last week
  • WR Isaac Bruce is on pace for his highest receiving total since the 1998 season
  • WR Torry Holt is on pace to catch 90 passes and score 9 touchdowns

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (@ San Diego)

  • The Buccaneers are 1-6 lifetime against the Chargers
  • The Buccaneers are 5-3 in the last eight games
  • The Buccaneers are 1-5 on the road this year
  • The Buccaneers have allowed 17 points or less in seven games this year
  • The Buccaneers defense is ranked 7th in the NFL in points allowed
  • QB Brian Griese has thrown a touchdown pass in every game he has played in this season
  • Griese is still completing 69.1% of his passes and has 13 touchdown passes against only 6 interceptions
  • RB Michael Pittman has scored ten touchdowns in his last seven games.  He only scored eight in his previous 51 games
  • Pittman is averaging 4.2 yards per carry and a strong 10.8 yards per reception
  • Rookie receiver Michael Clayton is still on pace to put up 1,124 yards this season

Tennessee Titans (vs. Kansas City)

  • The Titans franchise (including the Oilers) is 18-25 lifetime against the Chiefs
  • The Titans are 2-5 in the last seven games
  • The Titans are a woeful 1-4 at home this year
  • WR Drew Bennett is on pace to finish with 1,037 receiving yards on the year
  • The Titans have surrendered 82 points in the last two games
  • Quarterbacks Steve McNair and Billy Volek have almost identical numbers this season
    -McNair: 60.0% completion rate, 6.2 YPA, 8 touchdowns and 9 interceptions
    -Volek: 60.7% completion rate, 6.2 YPA, 9 touchdowns and 7 interceptions
