Early Injury Report - Week 1

Quarterbacks

  • Michael Vick, QB Atlanta - Vick has a sore right hamstring, and recently described the sensation as if the hamstring had a "knot" in it - he reports that he can't run very well due to the injury. He managed a short and unimpressive outing against Washington in the pre-season finale. There are interesting rumblings in Atlanta as backup QB Matt Schaub has been outstanding. Just remember it's been against preseason defenses. When healthy, Vick's job is in no danger whatsoever, but the fact that Schaub has looked very capable is interesting.

  • Aaron Brooks, QB NO - Brooks missed the first pre-season game due to a strained right quadriceps but rejoined practices and started in the second game. However, Brooks re-injured the quad in the second game and it's been a nagging concern. He was limited in practice on Monday and made a very brief appearance in the pre-season finale vs. Miami. He's expected to play in week 1.

  • Tim Rattay, QB S.F. - Rattay returned to the team just before training camp with a surgically repaired groin, and promptly started having problems with soreness (tendonitis say the coaches, a pulled muscle says Rattay) in his right (throwing) forearm. He tried throwing in practice on 8/17, but was only effective tossing short routes - throwing downfield caused pain in the forearm. Rattay played in the two most recent pre-season games, going 7/10 for 51 yards, 0 TD's and 0 interceptions in week 3 and 7/8 for 101 yards, 1 TD and 0 interceptions in the finale. He is no longer listed on injury reports out of S.F.

  • Buffalo is in a bad way at backup QB, with both JP Losman (broken leg) and Travis Brown (knee) sustaining serious injuries - both players are out until October, at the earliest. If Drew Bledsoe goes down, newly acquired Shane Matthews would be the most likely candidate to step in and play.

  • Anthony Wright, QB Baltimore is on IR with a torn labrum in his shoulder.

  • B.J. Symons, QB Houston is on IR due to a knee injury.

  • Joe Hamilton, QB Indianapolis has sore ribs (day-to-day).

  • Charlie Batch, QB Pittsburgh, is out for the season (arm/shoulder).

  • Brock Huard, QB Seattle, is done for the season (IR, back).

Running Backs

  • Priest Holmes, RB K.C. - Holmes reported recently that though he is playing through the pain, his injured hip is chronically sore. While it hasn't stopped him from playing, he's not 100%. Although less than 100% of Holmes is obviously plenty enough. Holmes seems just fine heading into the regular season.

  • Ahman Green, RB Green Bay - Green gave folks a scare with an apparent knee injury last week but it's just a bruised kneecap. "He'll be fine," head coach Mike Sherman said. "When he took the hit, it moved the kneecap a little bit and scared him and me. Many, many thoughts go through your head at that time, a player of that magnitude." An MRI when the team returned to Green Bay confirmed it was just a bruise on the kneecap. Green was held out of the pre-season finale for precautionary reasons. He'll be good to go for week 1.

  • Fred Taylor, RB Jacksonville - H.C. Del Rio reported that Taylor would miss the August 27th game vs. Green Bay due to a strained foot, according to reports circulating on 8/23/04. Coach Del Rio insists that the injury is "nothing major". Taylor sat out the pre-season finale for precautionary reasons. Remember that Taylor sat out much of last year's preseason and was fine for the regular season. According to SportsLine.com insider Pete Prisco, Fred Taylor's foot injury is nothing serious, and the veteran halfback said last week he could have played against Green Bay if it was the regular season. "No big deal," Taylor said. "It's really nothing." Taylor will be ready for the regular-season opener in Buffalo.

  • Travis Henry, RB Buffalo - Henry injured his ribs in the preseason game vs. the Titans, and missed practice on 8/23/04. He didn't play vs. Indianapolis on Saturday, August 28th, and missed the pre-season finale against the Lions, too. He is expected to play in the regular season opener, though.

  • Edgerrin James, RB Indianapolis - James was held out of the final pre-season game to "rest" - the team wants him fresh for the regular season opener Thursday night, and need him to be 100% healthy.

  • James Mungro, backup RB Indianapolis - Mungro has a sore wrist (day-to-day).

  • Dominic Rhodes, backup RB Indianapolis - Rhodes has a sore ankle and a tweaked groin (day-to-day).

  • Michael Bennett, RB Minnesota - Bennett injured his knee in the pre-season game vs. San Francisco, and an MRI showed more damage than was originally suspected. He is out for the season opener for certain, and may need until late September/Early October to return to the playing field. He describes the sprained knee as "really sore" and has expressed regret that he will miss the season opener. The recent good news is that Bennett recently said he was targeting week 2 to return. "It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be," Bennett said. Players are almost always too optimistic on injury though so be careful here.

  • Domanick Davis, RB Houston - Davis returned from his ankle problems to tear up Denver to the tune of 7/49/0 rushing and 2/20/0 receiving. He appears to be at 100% heading into regular season action.

  • Stephen Davis, RB Carolina - Davis missed the last pre-season game vs. New England due to a sore knee, and was considered questionable to play against Pittsburgh on Thursday. However, he played for a few series, and put up a respectable 7/29/0 before going to the bench with the rest of the starters.

  • Duce Staley, RB Pittsburgh, has a minor knee injury (day-to-day) to start the season.

  • Marshall Faulk, RB, St. Louis - Faulk started on MNF 8/23/04 and managed 6/16/0 rushing (1/9/0 receiving) in the face of persistent rumors that his knees are degenerating. He does not appear on any pre-season injury reports, and has looked fine in his brief pre-season appearances.

  • Kevin Jones, RB Detroit - Jones has returned to full practices after missing roughly 2 weeks with a severe left hamstring strain. Coach Mariucci has indicated that the rookie has a lot of catching up to do by opening day as a result of this injury. Jones led the teams' rushing effort in week 2 of pre-season, vs. Cleveland (6/29/0). He also led the team against a very tough Ravens' D last week. Jones gained 36 yards on seven carries against the Ravens last Saturday (8/28), with a long run of 15 yards. "He ran aggressively as well," Mariucci said. ... The coach also liked the way Jones played through the pain of a sprained left foot, suffered in practice last Thursday (8/26). Jones kept ice on his foot, warmed up before the game and played. It showed some toughness. ... It was no surprise to see Jones sit out the week 4 preseason finale, as we indicated before the game.

  • Charlie Garner, RB T.B. - Garner missed the first two pre-season games of the year due to a sore hamstring. He rushed 4 times for 20 yards vs. Miami in the week 3 pre-season game. In week 4 Garner watched the backups play throughout the preseason finale.

  • Warrick Dunn, RB Atlanta - Dunn has a slight thigh injury which rendered him questionable for the Friday pre-season finale. Initial reports were that he suffered from cramps but we're hearing it called a slight strain. The injury is not considered serious at this time. Dunn made a very brief appearance in the week 4 finale (1/-1/0 rushing) but watched most of the 27-0 debacle vs. Washington.

  • Lee Suggs, RB Cleveland - Suggs is suffering from a shoulder stinger and sat out the pre-season finale as a result. Suggs vowed to practice next Wednesday and be in the starting lineup vs. Baltimore in week 1. Coach Butch Davis avoided talking about him and would only say he's "day to day".

  • Kevin Barlow, RB San Francisco has a sore hip (day-to-day).

  • San Francisco's FBs Fred Beasley (ankle - return set for mid September) and Jason Isom (knee - day to day) enter the season banged up.

  • Kevin Faulk, RB New England - Faulk injured his knee in the pre-season game vs. Carolina, and is now on personal leave to tend to a sick family member. However, there is some speculation in the Boston press that the knee injury is more severe than day-to-day. As of today, the true status of the injury cannot be determined.

  • Anthony Thomas, RB Chicago - Thomas is nursing an abdominal/rib injury which has cost him practice and game time in the first weeks of pre-season. He was considered questionable to play in Friday's preseason game vs Cleveland, and did not appear.

  • Mike Anderson, RB Denver - Mike Anderson tore two muscles in his groin away from the bone during the pre-season game vs. Houston and is done for the season. Tatum Bell will backup starter Quentin Griffin at RB.

  • Correll Buckhalter, RB, Philadelphia - Out for the season due to a torn patellar tendon.

  • Tatum Bell, RB Denver has pins in his broken finger and has been handling the ball gingerly in practice. He was a late scratch for the game vs. Seattle, and managed 9/23/0 rushing in limited work vs. Houston. In week 4 he posted 18/69/1 vs. Arizona in his first extensive work of the pre-season.

  • Marcel Shipp, RB Arizona - on IR and out for the season with fractured fibula (surgery to repair this injury); he also suffered a severely dislocated left ankle in addition to the broken bone.

  • James Hodgins, FB Arizona - on IR due to a shoulder injury.

  • Joe Burns, backup FB Buffalo, is suffering from an ankle injury that has limited his practice time - he's considered day-to-day right now.

  • Nick Goings, backup FB Carolina, is nursing a sore ankle. He's considered day-to-day heading into the season.

  • Ben Miller, reserve FB Cleveland, is on IR due to an ankle injury.

  • Eric Bickerstaff, RB Dallas, is out for the season due to a torn Achilles tendon.

  • Chris Fuamatu Ma'afala, FB Jacksonville, has an injured foot, and is considered day-to-day heading into the regular season.

  • David Allen, reserve RB Jacksonville, has a ankle injury - severity unknown at this point.

  • B.J. Askew, backup FB NYJ, has a shoulder injury (day-to-day).

  • Bruce Perry, reserve RB Philadelphia, is out for the season with a shoulder injury.

  • Andrew Pinnock, backup FB San Diego, has a sore calf.

  • Lamar Gordon, backup RB St. Louis, was nicked with an ankle injury but he played extremely well in the exhibition closer, pulling extended duty.

  • Chris Perry, CIN pulled his hamstring in the second half of the exhibition closer and left the game.

Wide Receivers

  • Steve Smith, WR Carolina - Smith had a minor hamstring injury that was bothering him before the final pre-season game. He did return to practice Monday 8/30, and Smith snagged 3/24/0 in the preseason finale before the backups took over.

  • Terrell Owens, WR Philadelphia - Owens struggled to practice in San Francisco last season due to a tender groin, and Eagles' coach Andy Reid is being careful to hold him out of some practices this season, in an attempt to keep the groin from flaring up during 2004. He has enjoyed a fine pre-season to date. Owens did miss practice Monday with what's being described as a non serious abdominal strain. The entire first team took the night off in the pre-season finale, so don't read anything into Owens' absence from the box score.

  • Santana Moss, WR, N.Y.J. - Moss has a tweaked hamstring, which had him listed as questionable to play against Indianapolis. Moss did not play in the week 2 contest. He also did not catch a pass in the week 3 game vs. NYG, but hopes to see action in the pre-season finale. Pennington tossed him a pass during the Jets' second drive, but the ball fell incomplete and Moss didn't make a catch during the game (the starters exited early, as is traditional in the week 4 preseason game).

  • Laveranues Coles, WR Washington - Coles has a chronically painful, fractured big toe, which he played on all of last season. After being told in the off-season that surgery to correct the problem could end his career, Coles elected to play through the pain again in 2004. He has noticeably limped after some practice sessions, but Coles insists that the toe does not affect his game on Sundays.

  • Larry Fitzgerald, WR Arizona - Fitzgerald's sprained ankle put him into a walking cast and he has missed valuable practice and game time. He did not play in the week 2, 3 or week 4 pre-season games. On the positive side, he practiced Sunday but according to coach Green, looked less than great. "They looked rusty," Green said, adding that because of both players' big size he isn't certain they'll have to time to get the rhythm and timing down. "Will they get there within one week? I don't know about that."

  • Joey Galloway, WR TB - Galloway has a sore groin, and is considered day-to-day as a result of this injury. didn't play in the week 3 pre-season game and was also sidelined for week 4.

  • Eddie Kennison, WR K.C. - Kennison is participating in only 1/2 of the Chiefs' practices while he tries to heal a nagging wrist injury. The good news is he played in the pre-season finale, and his injury seems to be healed at this point.

  • Anquan Boldin, WR Arizona - Boldin is expected to miss 8-12 weeks after knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

  • Drew Bennett, WR Tennessee - Bennett missed the week 3 pre-season game with sore ribs. He is considered day-to-day due to this injury, and missed the week 4 pre-season finale.

  • Tyrone Calico, WR Tennessee - Calico sprained both his knees in the pre-season game week 3 against Dallas. He enjoyed a fine outing with 2/41/0 prior to the injury. According to the team's official web site, MRI results on Tyrone Calico's knees Monday (8/30) revealed an MCL and PCL sprain in his right knee and a mild MCL sprain and a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee. Calico's left knee will be scoped on Wednesday (9/1) and he will likely miss 2 to 3 weeks while recovering. That was music to the ears of head coach Jeff Fisher, who feared his deep-threat receiver may have suffered ACL damage Monday at Dallas. "It's not going to set him back, although he will miss some time," Fisher said. "He is not going to lose everything he has gained thus far. He will be okay. ..."

  • Peter Warrick, WR Cincinnati - Warrick has missed 3 pre-season games with a knee injury, and the injury (which was inflicted last December) is being treated gingerly by the coaching staff. His absence from the lineup is giving T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Kelley Washington their chance to shine. On the positive side, Warrick practiced at full speed on Monday 8/30, and caught 5/32/0 in the pre-season finale.

  • Marty Booker, WR Miami - Booker missed the first week of Chicago's training camp and, more recently, practice on 8/17, due to a sore hamstring. He then exited Chicago to Miami as part of the Adewale Ogunleye swap.

  • Travis Taylor, WR Baltimore - Taylor has a sore groin which has limited him during pre-season. He missed the game vs. Detroit due to this groin injury.

  • Johnnie Morton, WR K.C. - Morton is out for the time being with an Achilles tendon injury. Marc Boerigter is out indefinitely thanks to a knee injury suffered vs. Cleveland, so Morton is needed back in the lineup. However, Achilles injuries have to be treated cautiously as they are unpredictable and hard to heal properly. Morton has told Dick Vermeil he'll be ready for regular-season opener

  • Marcus Robinson, WR Minnesota - Robinson has a perennially sore hamstring that has limited his playing time and practices - as a result, he's now the #3 WR on the Vikings, behind Nate Burleson. He hope to be ready for week 1 but as of now, his status for opener still uncertain.

  • David Givens, WR New England - Givens has a leg injury that has limited him in pre-season (day-to-day).

  • Troy Brown, WR New England - Brown had a mild leg injury heading into the pre-season finale - it shouldn't affect him come regular season. Brown was held out of the week 4 preseason game along with the other Patriots with assured roster spots, so don't be worried that he's not in the box-score.

  • Wayne Chrebet, WR NYJ - Chrebet has a sore groin that has limited him in pre-season - he's listed as day-to-day at this point. Coach Herman Edwards has characterized his status for the opener as 50-50.

  • Marc Boerigter, WR K.C. - Boerigter caught 4 balls for 50 yards in the preseason game vs. Cleveland, and then injured his knee. He'll miss the season after being placed on IR last week.

  • Kelly Washington, WR Cincinnati - Washington has a sore ankle which is keeping him limited - he's considered day-to-day at this point. He caught 2 balls for 18 yards in the pre-season finale.

  • Joe Jurevicius, WR TB - Jurevicius has missed training camp and pre-season games with knee and back troubles, but is looking to be more active in practice this week. The Buccaneers placed Jurevicius on the reserve non-football injury list on Sunday. By going on the reserve non-football injury list, he will be eligible to return after six games.

  • Bryant Johnson, WR Arizona, has missed most of the pre season with a stress fracture in his foot. He was listed as questionable for the pre-season finale on Thursday and did not play. Johnson returned to practice but according to coach Dennis Green, looked rusty; and his status for week 1 was still in question.

  • Rashaun Woods, WR San Francisco, has missed most of training camp and pre-season games to date with a strained left hamstring. Woods returned to practice this week, and caught the first TD pass of his professional career in the pre-season finale.

  • Tim Dwight, WR San Diego - a sore hamstring is bothering Dwight, who is considered day-to-day at this point. His status for the opener is still in question.

  • Randal Williams, WR Dallas has a right shoulder fracture and is headed to IR.

  • David Boston, WR Miami, out for the season with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee.

  • Kendall Newsome, WR Miami, out for the season with a knee injury.

  • Bobby Sippio, WR Miami, on IR with a knee injury.

  • Derek Abney, WR/KR Baltimore - on IR with a shoulder injury.

  • Bernard Berrian, WR Chicago is on the PUP due to a hamstring injury.

  • Patrick Johnson WR Cincinnati is on IR due to a hand injury.

  • B.J. Johnson, WR Denver, is on IR due to an ankle injury.

  • Shockmain Davis, WR Green Bay, is nursing a leg injury (day-to-day).

  • Brad Pyatt, WR Indianapolis, Earlier this week, the team believed a deep bruise to Pyatt's right thigh might force him to miss up to six weeks. The outlook for Pyatt improved last Tuesday. He didn't play against the Bengals, but there's a good chance he will be available for the regular-season opener at New England.

  • Troy Walters, WR Indianapolis, has a broken arm and isn't expected back until October.

  • Kenny Clark, WR Minneapolis has an undisclosed injury which led to his departure from the team.

  • James McKnight, WR NYG, is on IR due to a toe injury.

  • Seahawks' backup WR's Bobby Engram (back) and Alex Bannister (shoulder) are banged up heading into regular season (day-to-day).

  • Edell Sheppard, WR Tampa Bay, is on IR (foot).

Tight Ends

  • Tony Gonzales, TE K.C. - Gonzales has a painful stress fracture in a foot, and has been limited to one practice a day by the coaching staff in an attempt to help him manage the pain. Gonzales played through the injury for most of 2003 and looks like he'll do the same this year. No reason to think he won't be just as effective.

  • Kris Wilson, TE K.C. - Wilson, who had been impressive in pre-season action, will miss at least half of the regular season due to a broken left fibula, suffered in the pre-season finale.

  • Todd Heap, TE Baltimore - Heap has a shoulder injury that kept him out of the third pre-season game, and he is questionable to play in the pre-season finale. The injury is characterized as a "bruised shoulder" and isn't considered serious at this time. Heap did miss the pre-season finale.

  • Jeremy Shockey, TE NYG - Shockey, recovered from the surgery on his fractured foot and (briefly) practicing half-time, has now injured his right hamstring in practice on Sunday 8/22/04 and is currently missing practices once again. The injury is characterized as a strain and he is "day-to-day". He did not catch a pass in the team's preseason finale.

  • Antonio Gates, TE San Diego - Gates injured his right ankle in the game vs. Arizona on Saturday, and did not return to action. He did play despite a nagging thumb problem, though. The ankle has him listed as day-to-day heading into the pre-season finale on Thursday. Gates returned to practice on Monday 8/30. He did not catch a pass in the team's preseason finale.

  • Dallas Clark, TE Indianapolis - Clark "rolled" his right ankle during last Thursdays' practice, and was held out of the game vs. the NYJ. The injury is minor, and he is expected to recover with no complications. He played in the pre-season finale and caught 1/9/0.

  • Desmond Clark, TE Chicago - Clark has a severe hamstring pull and was limited earlier this year. He returned to practice Sunday 8/29 and had his first full pads workout Monday 8/30. He played in the pre-season finale and caught one pass for 15 yards.

  • Billy Miller, TE Houston, has struggled with a bad back throughout training camp.

  • Reggie Kelly, TE Cincinnati, has struggled with a bad thumb during training camp. He played in the pre-season finale; and should be ready for opener.
