IDP Notes

Around The League

  • If you see Seattle S Ken Hamlin's numbers start to fall, Mike Holmgren has talked about giving Damien Robinson a bigger role in the Seahawks defense. He doesn't want to overload Hamlin during his rookie season.

  • Scott Fujita has picked up 29 solo tackles and three sacks over the last three weeks, and he's not even Japanese (his adopting parents are).

  • After missing the last four games because of multiple concussions, Raiders LB Bill Romanowski has been placed on the injured reserve, officially ending his season. He will stay on with the Raiders as a defensive advisor, but there's speculation that his playing days are over.

  • Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio is on the prowl, and he says that there will be changes made to his defensive starting lineup (no players were singled out). Coming into this year, expectations were high based on what Del Rio was able to accomplish with Carolina's defense and the signing of highly touted free-agents Mike Peterson and Hugh Douglas, but they have yet to see any of that potential pay off.

  • In Atlanta, lineup changes are also on the way and players have been named. Along with a possible shift to the 4-3, brought on by the injury to Keith Brooking, we could see four new faces starting in the secondary. Backup corners Todd McBride and Juran Bolden, returning from the physically unable to perform list, would replace the starting cornerback duo of Ray Buchanan and Tyrone Williams while Cory Hall, returning from an injury himself, and rookie DB Bryan Scott would replace Gerald McBurrows and Keion Carpentor. The Falcons currently rank dead last in overall defense, 30th against the run and last against the pass.

  • Falcons LB Keith Brooking, reportedly out from 2-6 weeks with a back injury, says he wants to play despite the injury.

  • Giants CB Ralph Brown, prior to his matchup with Randy Moss: "Don't be afraid of him," Brown said. "Don't be afraid to jump for the ball. You've got to be physical. Facing great players gives you a chance to improve yourself and make a name for yourself." The Giants also said that they would give Moss a big dose of double coverage in an attempt to contain the leagues leading receiver. It didn't work, as Moss picked up 7-125 and two touchdowns, but New York did come away with a victory.

  • Bears CB Jerry Azumah, recently demoted to nickle back, has replaced R.W.McQuarters in the starting lineup across from rookie Charles Tillman (who replaced Azumah). The Bears held Detroit to just 180 passing yards on Sunday, but they've yet to find an answer for their 29th ranked run defense.

  • Last year, when Packers DE Vonnie Holliday faced the Bills, he recorded five sacks and three forced fumbles. As a Chief on Sunday night, he was held to just one solo tackle, continuing a terrible stretch of games (six solo tackles with one sack over the last seven games).

  • Prior to their game this weekend, Bills DT Pat Williams said that there was no way that Priest Holmes would gain 100 yards against his team on Sunday night. He guaranteed that “we’re going to shut him down” and said Holmes won’t get 50 yards rushing let alone 100. Well, Holmes was held to just 83 rushing yards (season average of 96 yards per game), and Williams didn't say anything about keeping him out of the end zone (three rushing TDs).

  • Buccaneers CB Tim Wansley has replaced Brian Kelly in the starting lineup. Kelly was placed on the injured reserve after suffering a chest injury. The other option is to move FS Dwight Smith to cornerback, where he played last year, and fill his safety spot with Jermaine Phillips.

  • After missing much of the season with a wrist injury, Broncos DT Daryl Gardener has made his way back into the starting lineup on Sunday and picked up four solo tackles.

  • Broncos CB Deltha O'Neal remains out of the starting lineup because of inconsistent play and found himself on the inactive list for the first time in his four year career.

  • Redskins LB LaVar Arrington, on his teammates: "The guys that are laughing and joking and hollering like this doesn't mean anything, they need to reevaluate why they play ball," Arrington said. "If I'm playing my heart out and guys are laughing and joking and we just lost? You do the math. I'm ready to run the game back. I'm not laughing and joking about that. I'm not laughing and joking about life after I lose a game. There should be a time after a game when you really sit back and reflect what happened out there on that field, and I don't know how you can sit and joke and laugh and play and have a good time if you're thinking about what happened during a loss."

  • Going into Monday nights game, the Dolphins led the league by allowing only 68.8 rushing yards per game (and 2.9 yards per carry). As a team, the Chargers did a little better than that (104, 3.4), but they did hold LaDanian Tomlinson to just 62 yards (2.6).

  • Ravens LB Ray Lewis, on teammate S Ed Reed: "The guy is on his way," LB Ray Lewis said. "It might be unfair to say this so early on, but he's on his way to greatness." Oh yeah Ray? Well let us know when he gets there bacause three solo tackles over the last two games is not very "great".

  • Titans DE Jevon Kearse was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his week seven performance against the Panthers. Helping limit Stephen Davis to just 20 yards rushing, Kearse picked up three solo tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

  • There's been a Boss Bailey sighting. Bailey recorded his first career sack on Sunday while also posting his highest tackle total of the year (eight solos). Up to this point, he's been a worthless fantasy performer, but this may be the type of game that gets him on track.

  • Jets DE Shaun Ellis has tied an NFL record by picking up a sack in seven consecutive games to start a season.

  • Jets DE John Abraham, coming off of a 3.5 sack performance against the Eagles, has been ruled out for this weekends game with a groin injury. Bryan Thomas will start in Abraham's spot, but Chester McGlockton will also see time in certain situations.

  • Suspended Jets DT Josh Evans expects to be reinstated in time for their November 9th game against the Raiders.

  • When Tennessee faces Jacksonville it's almost like a home game for DE JeVon Kearse, who's from Fort Myers. Prior to this past weekend sackless performance, he had recorded seven sacks in the previous three games against the Jaguars.

  • Broncos LB John Mobley bruised his spinal cord during Denver's game against the Baltimore Ravens and spent the night in the hospital on Sunday. He's since been released with all signs being positive and he's regained full feeling in his arms and legs.

  • The 49ers are hurting in their secondary. Against Arizona during week eight, backup safety Ronnie Heard was lost from 4-5 weeks with a torn MCL and starting free safety Zack Bronson suffered a shoulder injury which has him listed as questionable. The team promoted S John Keith from their practice squad and may look to free-agency to add another body.

  • Raiders DT Darrell Russell has been reinstated after serving a 1.5 year suspension for his involvement in a sexual assault charge. Oakland promptly released Russell and the Redskins are considering adding him to their roster.

  • Vikings CB Ken Irvin will replace Brian Williams in the starting lineup. Williams takes over for Irvin as the teams nickel back.

  • Titans rookie CB Andre Woolfolk seriously sprained his ankle this weekend and there's speculation that he may be done for the year. Results from an MRI and a second opinion will follow.

  • Panthers LB Dan Morgan has suffered concussions in consecutive weeks and, while he expects to practice this week, his status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

  • Eagles DT Hollis Thomas tore his biceps tendon on Sunday. He'll have surgery this week and be placed on the IR shortly thereafter, officially ending his season.

  • Jaguars LB T.J. Slaughter was arrested on Monday after allegedly pointing a gun at two people in a passing car. He could face a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which is a felony. On Tuesday, he was released by Jacksonville.

  • Jaguars LB Keith Mitchell has been cleared to practice. He's seen time in only one game since suffering a neck injury on September 14th.

  • Giants CB Will Peterson, who's currently out with a back injury, was arrested on Saturday for driving with a suspended license.

  • Movement along the Cardinals defensive line: DE Dennis Johnson has replaced Fred Wakefield in the starting lineup, DT Wendell Bryant has been moved to defensive end for the time being, and rookie DE Calvin Pace recorded his first career sack on Sunday.

  • Steelers LB Joey Porter has been moved back to rush and in the dime package, a role that he has filled in the past but had been replaced to this point in the season by Kendrell Bell. Porter picked up two sacks on Sunday.

  • The Saints have suspended DT Grady Jackson one game for "conduct detrimental to the team". Jackson missed this past weekends game with a sprained ligament in his pinky. (this is not a joke). He will miss the upcoming game against Tampa Bay.

  • The league offices have been busy of late. Izell Reese was fined $25,000 for knocking over an official. Rodney Harrison, Terrance Kiel and Lawyer Milloy for all fined $25,000 for bumping officials. was fined $25,000 for bumping an official. Brian Russell was fined $7,500 for a helmet to helmet hit on Shannon Sharpe. Dwight Smith was fine $22,000 for conduct detrimental to the game (stemming from an arrest). Cardinals S Adrian Wilson will likely be the next in line. He was charged with two personal fouls late in Sundays game against the 49ers, one of which involved a kick to TE Jed Weavers throat which led to him being ejected from the game.

  • Redskins DE Bruce Smith is still 1.5 sacks away from tying Reggie White for the career title. Coming off of a bye, he'll get his shot this weekend against Quincy Carter and the Cowboys.

  • Bengals LB Brian Simmons has been named the AFCs Defensive Player of the Week for his week eight performance against the Seahawks. Among Simmons key plays were an interception and a forced fumble, which helped Cincinnati to an upset victory.
