Injury Roundup...
- Packers S Antuan Edwards has been placed on the injured reserve with a torn
hamstring tendon. That's been the story of his career so far, an inability
to remain healthy, and he'll once again be replaced by Marques Anderson.
- Texans S Matt Stevens has been placed on the injured reserve after spraining
his MCL. If it happened earlier in the year, he'd likely be back within a
month, but seeing as how he'll miss 2-3 weeks in rehab, they decided to open
up the roster spot.
- Ravens LB Adalius Thomas fractured his arm and will miss the remainder
of the year. There is a chance that he could return if Baltimore makes the
post-season, so Thomas will not be placed on the IR. Terrell "10 Sacks"
Suggs will replace him in the lineup. Suggs was in the news recently after
being charged with felony aggravated assault. He's accused of using a reinforced
rod to assault a man during a March 29 fight outside Phoenix Municipal Stadium
following a three-on-three basketball tournament.
- Lions S Corey Harris has a torn hamstring and will miss the remainder of
the year. It looks like rookie Terrence Holt will see more playing time in
Harris' absence.
- The Browns have placed DE Courtney Brown and DB Lewis Sanders on the injured
reserve. Brown suffered a ruptured biceps tendon on Sunday while Sanders has
been out with a groin injury. Mark Word will replace Brown in the starting
lineup.
- Jets DE John Abraham, who's missed much of the last six weeks with a groin
injury, has already been ruled out for week 15. He may be headed for the IR.
There's been talk about using him (when healthy) in the same fashion as the
late Derrick Thomas to increase his playmaking ability. This is definitely
a situation to keep your eyes on as it could turn Abraham into a monster (although,
how fierce is a monster with an injured groin?)
- Texans CB Aaron Glenn left Sundays game after reinjuring the groin that
forced him to miss some time earlier in the year, and his season may be in
jeopardy.
- Titans LB Rocky Calmus, out for the remainder of the regular season with
a fractured leg, may possibly be available for the post-season. He will not
be placed on the injured reserve.
- Saints CB Dale Carter has been placed on injured reserve with a knee injury
that will need 4-6 weeks of rehab.
- Texans LB Charlie Clemons has been placed on the injured reserve with an
ankle injury. Steve Foley, who's nursing his own shoulder injury, will replace
him as the starting outside linebacker.
- Broncos LB Ian Gold's recovery from a torn ACL is going ahead of schedule
and he may be able to resume full on-field activities within six months of
the surgery.
Around the league...
- The Daryl Gardener fiasco is over in Denver...for now. He's been placed
on the reserve-nonfootball injury list, officially ending his season.
- Dallas has demoted DE Ebenezer Ekuban, a starter in the teams first 12 games,
and replaced him with Eric Ogbogu. Ekuban has recorded just 19 solo tackles
with 2.5 sacks and was listed inactive during this weks game.
- Jaguars DE Tony Brackens has $4.7 million worth of incentives in his contract
tied mainly to playing time and sacks. He reached one of the levels when he
picked up his sixth sack this past weekend and will make a late season push
for 10 sacks and another large chunk of change.
- One day after being released by Dallas, CB Derek Ross was claimed off waivers
by the Atlanta. He was listed inactive during week 14 but may see time as
the Falcons nickel back.
- Bills DE Aaron Schobel's three sack performance during week 13 earned him
the AFCs Defensive Player of the Week award. He followed that up with a sack
and forced fumble against the Jets during week 14.
- Rams DE Leonard Little's four sack, two forced fumble performance during
week 13 earned him the NFCs Defensive Player of the Week award. He followed
that up with another sack and forced fumble during Monday nights game against
the Browns.
- Rams S Adam Archuleta has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month
for the month of November. In four games, he picked up 24 solo tackles, three
sacks, forced a fumble and returned a fumble for a touchdown. It obviously
went to his head as he recorded just two solo tackles on Monday night.
- Rams S Aeneas Williams incredible Monday night performance earned him Player
of the Week honors for week 14. Against Cleveland he recorded eight solo tackles,
one sack, and picked off two passes (returning one for a touchdown).
- Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis has been named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the
Month for the month of November. Missing just one play in five games, he picked
up 30 solo tackles with an interception and five passes defended.
- "We are embarrassed," HC MIke Tice said. "We will do the
best job that we can to fix whatever area we can fix. . . . After a game like
that, I don't think you can stand pat." That's what coach Tice said after
a 48-17 loss to the Rams during week 13. Lineup changes were made, and it
seemed to work as the Vikings held Seattle to just seven points on Sunday.
Rookie DE/DT Kevin Willians started at nose tackle, replacing Fred Robbins.
DE Chuck Wiley, inactive for much of the year, took Williams spot at end.
Kenny Mixon switched sides on the line, from right end to left, and Nick Rogers
replaced Henri Crockett as the starting strongside linebacker.
- Titans cornerback Samari Rolle was fined $12,500 by the NFL, $5,000 for
a throat-slash gesture and $7,500 for high-fiving teammate Andre Dyson during
a celebration after Rolle intercepted a pass against the Jets. Dyson was also
fined $7,500 for the celebration. Thousands of Titans fans, caught celebrating
in their homes, are also expecting fines in the mail. With fines now approaching
$20,000 (he was previously fined $5,000 for dancing on November 9th), Rolle
commented: "I'm pushing $20,000 by some people who've never run out of
a tunnel before and don't know the emotions that the game is played under,"
"They're taking the fun away." "I hope I win these next two,
or I'll give them something to fine me about." The Titans lost to the
Colts on Sunday, so expect to see some quotables from Rolle in the very near
future.
- The NFL has fined Panthers DE Julius Peppers $5,000 for hitting Eagles QB
Donovan McNabb out of bounds during their week 13 matchup.
- Browns DT Gerard Warren has reached escalators in his contract that significantly
increase his base salaries over the next two seasons. Through a combination
of team and individual milestones, Warren will receive $5.8 million in base
salary next season, a nice raise from the original $1.165 million he was previously
set to make. In 2005, his salary has been increased over $5 million, from
$1.465 to $6.8. Said Warren: "The majority of my escalators were about
the team performance, so obviously it means the team has been improving since
I've been here." HUH? The Browns fell to 4-10 on Monday night.
- Falcons DT Ellis Johnson had previously stated that this would be his last
season, but he's said to be reconsidering. Johnson leads all interior linemen
this year with eight sacks. Johnson owns a farm in Indianapolis and has been
scouting property in the Atlanta area.
- Giants DT Keith Hamilton was also hedging on retirement earlier in the
year, but he has not come out and said whether or not this will be his last
season. With HC Jim Fassel likely on his way out, Hamilton isn't sure whether
he will fit into a new coach's plans. "Whatever legacy I left here, I
played hard."
- LB Bill Romanowski, currently on the Raiders injured reserve, has accepted
a position as an analyst for Fox-TV. His first job will come Sunday when he
provides the color commentary for the Arizona Cardinals-Carolina Panthers
game along with Chris Myers.
- and finally...Redskins DE Bruce Smith recorded the 199th sack of his career
in Week 14, setting an all-time NFL record for career sacks. There has been
a lot of news that's come out during Smith's drive for the title that really
seems to have tainted his reputation (for those that didn't see him as self-centered
before). That's unfortunate for one of the best defensive linemen to ever
play the game.
