Kansas City 13 at San Francisco 17

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Kansas City Chiefs:

Priest Holmes only had 56 yards combined and one TD, but his day could have been much bigger. Holmes had two big plays erased because of holding penalties. This game should not worry Holmes owners.

Trent Green had a very average game. Though Green had good rapport with Eddie Kennison, Green could not find most of the other receivers. Green's day was made especially difficult because the 49er defense and LB Julian Peterson completely dominated Tony Gonzalez.

Eddie Kennison is the kind of WR that will go for weeks without making any impact at all, and then one week he'll explode. This was one of those weeks. Kennison shredded the 49ers. Mark Boerigter looks a lot better than Johnny Morton. When Kansas City makes some upgrades at the WR position at the end of the season (and they most certainly will), the KC offense will be even more deadly.

San Francisco 49ers:

The 49ers looked a bit flat after beating their cross-town rivals (Oakland) last week. Though the 49er offense didn't not post great numbers, their running game was very good and won the game for them.

QB Jeff Garcia had a surprisingly bad day, throwing for no TDs and one interception. Though Garcia played hard, his WR corps didn't give him much help.

The SF running game continues to look great. Garrison Hearst had a very big game. On most weeks, Hearst and Barlow split carries fairly evenly. But on this day Hearst was more effective.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Kansas City Chiefs

QB: Trent Green had a very average game. Though Green had good rapport with Eddie Kennison, Green could not find most of the other receivers. Green's day was made especially difficult because the 49er defense completely dominated Tony Gonzalez. Green faced huge pressure all day from the 49ers' defensive front, and that affected Green's production. It appears as though KC knows that it's better at running the ball, so Green's numbers for the second half of the season may not be as good as his first half.

WR: Eddie Kennison is the kind of WR that will go for weeks without making any impact at all, and then one week he'll explode. This was one of those weeks. Kennison shredded the 49ers with eight catches for 134 yards.

Mark Boerigter didn't get many touches, but he looks a lot better than Johnny Morton.

Morton continues to earn votes as the fantasy bust of the year and had zero catches. When Kansas City makes some upgrades at the WR position at the end of the season (and they most CERTAINLY will), the KC offense will be even more deadly.

RB: Much like Marshall Faulk, even an "off day" for Priest Holmes is still pretty good. Holmes only had 56 yards combined and one TD, but his day could have been much bigger. Holmes had a nifty TD run called back because of a holding penalty, and he had a spectacular 42 yard run nullified by another holding call. This game should not worry Holmes owners.

TE: Tony Gonzalez rarely gets dominated like this: one catch for six yards and no TDs. The 49er linebackers did a superb job of covering Gonzalez. Knowing that Gonzalez is extremely competitive, he will almost surely bounce back and play better next week.

Pass Defense Notes: This much-maligned unit has played well two weeks in a row. First, KC stopped the Raiders, now they played pretty well against the 49ers. Though KC lost this game, their embattled secondary can at least come away from this game feeling more confidant.

Rush Defense Notes: While the KC secondary played decently, the KC front seven was pushed around by the 49er offensive line. The 49ers rumbled for 155 yards on the ground and Garrison Hearst pushed the KC defense around at will.

San Francisco 49ers

QB: Jeff Garcia had a surprisingly bad day, throwing for no TDs and one interception. Though Garcia played hard, his WR corps didn't give him much help. The usually weak KC defense covered the 49er WRs effectively almost all day, and that hurt Garcia's numbers. Still, Garcia owners need not fret. This is most likely is a one-time setback for Garcia.

WR: This unit had average numbers, and no 49er WR caught a TD Sunday. Terrell Owens had a decent day with seven catches for 51 yards, but Owens could not break the tackles that he normally breaks. Tai Streets continues to play better than JJ Stokes. Streets owners will be happy to hear that Streets will be the permanent #2 WR soon if he isn't already. JJ Stokes was not a factor and his role diminishes with each passing week.

RB: The SF running game continues to look great. Garrison Hearst had a very big game, finishing with 90 combined yards and a TD run. On most weeks, Hearst and Barlow split carries fairly evenly. But on this day Hearst was more effective. Hearst ran with speed and power. Barlow did not get as many touches, but he did get a nice rushing TD. Fred Beasley had a solid game running and catching, but he has almost no fantasy value most weeks.

TE: Nothing to report, as usual. San Francisco does not seem to value the TE position anymore in terms of the passing game.

Pass Defense Notes: This unit was fairly effective all day, though during the last drive, a soft prevent defense allowed Green to hook up with Kennison several times. LB Julian Peterson was outstanding.

Rush Defense Notes: The story of the game. Any team that holds Priest Holmes to 51 yards rushing and one TD deserves some sort of medal.
