Seattle 27 at Arizona 6

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Seattle Seahawks:

Post game box score panic ran rampant across the county for all Shaun Alexander owners when they saw that Maurice Morris had 15 carries for 72 yards rushing while Alexander managed only 42 yards on 12 carries. The bulk of the Morris yardage happened in the fourth quarter during mop up time. However, Morris did get two carries on Seattle's opening drive and had 4 carries for 22 yards at the half.

Koren Robinson has responded well to being the number one WR and continues to make the plays that Seattle expected him to make when they drafted him last season in the first round.

The Seattle defense that we count on to give up nearly 200 yards on the ground each week did a better job this week of not getting run over entirely, until Marcel Shipp entered the game that is. As soon as Shipp entered the game Seattle started giving up large chunks of yardage on the ground.

Arizona Cardinals:

This could finally be the end for RB Thomas Jones in Arizona. Or is it? Marcel Shipp ran the ball so much better than Jones on the day that there is absolutely no question with regard to talent and desire. The crazy aspect to this was Shipp fumbled twice inside the 5 yard line after back to back long Arizona drives in the second half.

QB Jake Plummer's days in Arizona may also be numbered. After yet another lack luster performance one has to wonder if Plummer will take a huge pay cut to stay in Arizona next year. One also has to wonder if the Cardinals will want him back at all.

WR Jason McAddley was inactive only two weeks ago. He made several nice grabs including a long catch off a flee-clicker on the opening play of the game.

With David Boston out, it would have made sense that TE Freddie Jones would have been a bigger part of the passing game plan today. He was targeted only twice in the game. One was intercepted. The other was dropped.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Seattle Seahawks

QB: Matt Hasselbeck: 23-31-260 (1 TD). Hasselbeck was great managing a short passing game in the first half. He had over 200 yards before halftime and marched Seattle down the field on all five of its first half possessions for scores. He looked confident in the pocket and displayed plenty of zip on his passes. Seattle went conservative in the second half and ruined what could have been a monster day for Hasselbeck. Hasselbeck missed what could have been two other TDs in the first half when he missed both Robinson and Engram near the goal line.

RB: Shaun Alexander: 12-42 yards rushing (2 TD), 1-2 yards receiving (3 targets). Alexander did score two touchdowns in the first half, but other aspects of the game are going to drive Alexander owners nuts. He gained 1 yard or less on half of his 12 carries in the game. When faced with no obvious hole to run through Alexander danced behind the line of scrimmage attempting to make a big play. Clearly with Maurice Morris seeing 15 carries (many in mop up time but Morris also saw action in the first series), these stats make him look better than his situation would really indicate right now.

Maurice Morris: 15-72 yards rushing, 1-7 yards receiving (1 target). Holmgren is clearly trying to see what he has in Morris. He was given the second and third carries of the game on Seattle's first drive and two other carries in the second quarter. Morris was given almost all the carries in the fourth quarter and did a good job of grinding out yards to trying to milk the clock.

WR: Koren Robinson: 7-96 yards receiving (9 targets). 1-20 yards rushing on a reverse. Robinson is beginning to look like the playmaker Seattle has been looking for. Robinson turned several short plays into longer ones after breaking tackles. In the second quarter Robinson was targeted inside the 5 yard line on what may have been a TD if not for a poorly thrown pass.

James Williams: 1-8 yards receiving (1 target). Williams was given his first NFL start today and responded with a catch during the opening series of the game. The logic behind his start was to give Engram a rest from full time WR and punt return duty as he was worn out at the end of the game last week.

Bobby Engram: 5-52 yards receiving (6 targets). Engram didn't start, but he is still clearly the number two option in Seattle's passing game. He was targeted at the goal line early on what may have been a gimme TD, but the pass was poorly thrown.

TE: Itula Mili: 4-55 yards receiving (5 targets). Mili made three big plays in the second quarter. Oddly enough for a Holmgren team that was moving the ball so well Mili was not targeted near the redzone, but third string TE Hannam did catch Hasselbeck's TD on his only catch.

Jeremy Stevens: Did not play. Stevens practiced this past week on a few days, but was scratched from playing just before kickoff.

Pass Defense: Seattle put almost zero pressure on Plummer through the entire game. Plummer may not have even been hit in the pocket the entire game. Corey Fuller and Shawn Springs both picked off passes, but neither made great plays as one was tipped and the other was off a hail mary.

Rush Defense: Thomas Jones made the Seattle defense look respectable until he was benched. Marcel Shipp showed that the Seattle defense still has major issues. They did cause three turnovers on fumbles and rookie DT Rocky Bernard (5th round) is beginning to look like a player worth watching.

Special Teams: Rian Lindell hit both his FG attempts (23 and 30 yards) in the game. Jeff Feagles continued to impress this season with a 51 yards average on 3 punts.

Arizona Cardinals

QB: Jake Plummer: 17-29-226 (2 INT). Plummer didn't really that play poorly in this game. He led the team on several long drives that ended in turnovers. One of his interceptions was on a hail mary and the other one was off a tipped ball.

RB: Thomas Jones: 11-24 yards rushing. 3-8 yards receiving (3 targets). Jones got benched in the second half because he was tentative and slow getting to the hole.

Marcel Shipp: 16-85 yards rushing. 2-20 yards receiving (3 targets). Shipp looked great running the ball. He was quick, elusive, and ran hard. That's the upside. The downside is he fumbled twice inside the 5 yard line in the 2nd half If not for those fumbles, there wouldn't be any question over who was starting for the Cardinals next week.

WR: Frank Sanders: 5-62 yards receiving (9 targets). Sanders continued to show he is not a number one WR in the NFL. He's a decent complimentary WR, maybe even a good number three WR, but certainly not a go to guy.

Jason McAddley: 5-113 yards receiving (8 targets). McAddley responded to his first NFL start by making several nice grabs. He may be the playmaker in the passing game the rest of the way for the Cardinals as he makes nice adjustments on the ball and runs well after the catch.

TE: Freddie Jones: 0-0 yards receiving (2 targets). Given the opportunity to shine with David Boston out, Jones disappeared. His two targets resulted in an interception and a drop. Its unclear if Jones is playing poorly or Arizona is just not using him properly. The one thing that is clear is he's not helping anyone's FF team.

Pass Defense: The Arizona pass rush got one sack early on, then disappeared for the rest of the game. Arizona DBs missed several tackles in the game turning short passes into big plays. Hasselbeck dissected Arizona play after play the entire first half.

Rush Defense: Shaun Alexander was mostly kept in check except for the two TD runs. Arizona would have kept Seattle to under 100 total rushing yards if not for mop rushing yardage that Morris managed to get.

Special Teams: Gramatica hit both his FG attempts and neither team had a kick return worth mentioning.
