Washington 7 at Jacksonville 26

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Washington Redskins:

The Redskins offense was shut down by the Jaguars defense. QB Shane Matthews was inaccurate at times, and was unable to perform under pressure.

RB Kenny Watson wasn't able to get going. He only got 8 carries in the first half. With the Redskins trailing in the second half, they had no option but to pass.

WR Rod Gardner had a decent day today. He was one of the few receivers that Matthews threw to on a regular basis.

Jacksonville Jaguars:

After getting off to a slow start in the first half, the Jaguars offense came alive in the second half.

RBs Fred Taylor and Stacey Mack led the way with 82 and 56 yards, respectively. Both of them seemed to come alive in the third quarter. Neither did much in the first half.

WRs Jimmy Smith and Bobby Shaw both had big games. Smith had 5 catches for 68 yards, and Shaw had 3 catches for 69 yards.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Washington Redskins

QB: Shane Matthews didn't look good today. He was very uneasy when under pressure, often throwing inaccurate passes. Matthews did have a nice throw to Rod Gardner for a 20 yard touchdown. Rod Gardner and Kenny Watson were the only receivers that he threw to on a consistent basis. He finished 27/50 for 256 yards. He had one touchdown and two interceptions.

RB: Kenny Watson never got a chance to get going. He only had 8 carries in the first half, and with the Redskins falling behind in the second half, he wasn't used much then either. Watson did catch five passes for 28 yards. When Shane Matthews was under pressure, he would look to him.

WR: Rod Gardner looked good today. He was Matthews' top target. Gardner had a nice 20 yard touchdown reception. He finished with seven receptions for 100 yards.

No other receiver stood out as the clear number two receiver. Derrius Thompson started as the number two receiver. He finished with three catches for 24 yards. Chris Doering had two catches for 22 yards.

TE: Zeron Flemister and Walter Rasby both split time at TE. Flemister had one catch for nine yards. Rasby had two catches for 11 yards.

Rush defense: The Redskins had a tough time controlling Fred Taylor and Stacey Mack, who rushed for a combined 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Pass defense: The pass defense did a good job of controlling Jimmy Smith, limiting him to 68 yards. They allowed Bobby Shaw to catch a 48 yard pass that set up a Fred Taylor touchdown run.

Jacksonville Jaguars

QB: Mark Brunell was 19/29 for 194 yards. He looked solid today. Brunell wasn't required to pass a lot in the second half with Jacksonville leading. At the goal line, the Jaguars seemed to prefer to run instead of pass.

RB: Fred Taylor came alive in the third quarter after being shut down by the Redskins and rushing for only 17 yards in the first half. He was pulled at the goal line in favor of Stacey Mack. Taylor had a very nice 12 yard touchdown run near the end of the third quarter. Taylor also caught seven passes out of the backfield for 27 yards. Mack is still the goalline guy though.

Stacey Mack came in during goal line situations for Jacksonville. He had seven carries for 56 yards, including a two yard TD run.

WR: Jimmy Smith had a decent game today. He was covered well by the Redskins secondary. He caught five passes for 68 yards.

Bobby Shaw had a 48 yard reception that helped set up a Fred Taylor touchdown run. He had three receptions for 69 yards.

TE: Kyle Brady caught three passes for 24 yards.

Rush defense: Did a good job with Watson. They got some help by the fact that they were winning big late in the game, so the Redskins passed more.

Pass defense: Had trouble controlling Rod Gardner (7 rec., 100 yds.), but other than that, they did a good job controlling everyone else.
