Arizona 14 at Philadelphia 38

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Arizona Cardinals:

QB Jake Plummer took advantage of 2 Philadelphia turnovers in the first half. He converted both the McNabb fumble and interception into touchdowns. Beyond that he did nothing. Philadelphia's secondary blanketed the Cardinal's receivers and gave Plummer very little space to throw (170 yards). He was sacked 4 times and intercepted once by Bobby Taylor. Plummer never got a chance to engineer a huge comeback against the Eagles, like he has done 5 times before.

RB Thomas Jones had 9 carries for 30 yards. 5 of those carries were during the first drive. After he was stuffed on a 3rd and 1 during Arizona's second drive, Marcel Shipp came in as the primary back.

RB Marcel Shipp was Plummer's only reliable receiver. He pulled in 6 receptions for 57 yards. He also had 8 rushes for 69 yards. One of those runs was off the left guard for 56 yards that brought the Cardinals to the 22-yard line. On that same drive, with Arizona way behind, Shipp attempted to convert on 4th and 1 at the 13-yard line. He failed to convert and lost 5 yards.

WR Jason McAddley caught a 12-yard touchdown in the first quarter. It was the first of his young career. It was the only pass he caught all day. Troy Vincent wasn't about to let a rookie outplay him, after being burned by Marvin Harrison last week. It was the only reception by Arizona's top two receivers. Frank Sanders didn't catch a single pass.

Arizona's defense barely blitzed at all. Why wouldn't you want to try to attack an immobile McNabb? After taking the first hit that broke his ankle, McNabb was barely touched all game.

Philadelphia Eagles:

There is bad news for the Eagles and all Donovan McNabb owners. On the third play of the game, McNabb was sacked and broke his ankle. It looks as if he will be out for 6-8 weeks. McNabb refused to get x-rays, so everybody thought he had just sprained it. He had a noticeable limp the entire game. Unable to scramble, he sat back in the pocket and threw 20/25 for 255 yards and 4 touchdowns. This matches a career high for thrown touchdowns. It was the first time McNabb had zero rushing attempts. Koy Detmer will start in McNabb's place.

RB Duce Staley showed up today after disappearing for 2 weeks. He rushed for 136 yards and helped make it impossible for the Arizona defense to focus on the injured McNabb. He caught 3 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Staley is going to have to keep these numbers up if the Eagles want to make it to the play-offs.

WR James Thrash finally found the end zone. He started the season out with a touchdown in each of his first four games, but has been shut out ever since. He broke his dry spell with 2 touchdowns. The first was a 2-yard pass on a play fake to Staley to give the Eagles their first touchdown of the day. The second was a 4-yard run to the left end to give them their final touchdown. He picked up Freddie Mitchell's fumble and advanced it 2 more yards.

Arizona Cardinals

QB: Jake Plummer took advantage of 2 Philadelphia turnovers in the first half. He converted both the McNabb fumble and interception into touchdowns. Beyond that he did nothing. Joel Makovicka caught a 2-yard touchdown reception that tied the game at 14 all. He left the game at halftime because of a concussion.

WR: Frank Sanders wasn't involved at all today. I'll have to check the official targets to be sure when they come out, but I don't believe a single pass came his way.

Jason McAddley caught a 12-yard touchdown in the first quarter. It was the first of his young career. It was the only pass he caught all day. Troy Vincent wasn't about to let a rookie outplay him, after being burned by Marvin Harrison last week.

Jake Soliday grabbed 2 receptions for 20 yards. This is the most action this rookie has seen. He was the target of the Bobby Taylor interception.

Arnold Jackson caught his first 2 passes of the year for 18 yards.

TE: Freddie Jones caught 4 passes 43 yards. He opened the 3rd quarter with a 24-yard reception.

Arizona Pass Defense - After the ankle-breaking hit that was put on McNabb, they completely disappeared. There was no pass rush to speak of. McNabb had all the time that he wanted to pick apart Arizona's secondary. Adrian Wilson supplied the only good play, by intercepting an errant McNabb pass and returning it 35-yards to the 2-yard line. It set up Mackovicka's 2-yard touchdown that tied the score.

Arizona Rush Defense - There was no stopping Philadelphia's running game. They were torched for 213 yards. Not a single on of those yards came from McNabb. The only touchdown they allowed was the 4-yard James Thrash run.

Arizona Special Teams - Bill Gramatica had no field goal attempts. He converted both of his extra points.

Philadelphia Eagles

QB: Despite breaking his ankle early, Donovan McNabb played a stellar game. He completed 20/25 for 255 yards and 4 touchdowns. This matches a career high for thrown touchdowns. It was the first time McNabb had zero rushing attempts. His offensive line provided him with all the time in the world to find open receivers. He used James Thrash as his go to guy. The early diagnosis says he will be out 6-8 weeks. He played until there was 4:49 left in the game.

Koy Detmer came in for relief. He handed the ball of 6 straight times and didn't throw a single pass. He is expected to be the Eagles starter next week. This is bad news for anyone that has Philadelphia players on their roster.

RB: Duce Staley showed up today after disappearing for the last 2 weeks. He rushed for 136 yards off of 31 attempts (a season high) and helped make it impossible for the Arizona defense to focus on the injured McNabb. He caught 3 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 9-yard pass play to the 1-yard line. Staley ran over a couple of defenders to break into the end zone. He helped set the touchdown up by catching a short pass and taking it 45 yards to the 14-yard line. He scored two plays later. Staley is going to have to keep these numbers up if the Eagles want to make it to the play-offs.

Dorsey Levens rushed 7 times (matching his season high) for 57 yards. One rush was for 34 yards towards the right side. He grabbed a 3-yard shovel pass for a touchdown. The Eagles offensive line purposely collapsed leaving Levens all alone behind them. It was a risky play allowing Arizona to hit an already gimpy McNabb.

Brian Westbrook rushed 4 times for 16 yards. Three of his rushes were for 1st downs. He continues to make the most of his limited playing time.

WR: James Thrash finally found the end zone.

Todd Pinkston ended his touchdown drought too. He hadn't caught one in 4 weeks. He caught 2 passes for 35 yards. The touchdown pass was for 27-yards. Pinkston used his height advantage to snag the ball.

Antonio Freeman caught 3 passes for 27 yards. He continues to be a great 3rd down receiver.

Freddie Mitchell caught 1 ball for 18 yards and proceeded to fumble it. This guy has been complaining for more playing time.

TE: Chad Lewis was lost in the mix again today. He had no offensive production at all. He has definitely fallen from the ranks of a must start tight end.

Jeff Thomason had 2 receptions for 20 yards. This is unusual because the Eagles barely ever throw to him outside of the end zone.

Philadelphia Pass Defense - After last weeks upset to the Colts, this secondary was ready to play. After allowing 2 early touchdowns, both after big turnovers, they never let Arizona score against them again. They held Plummer to 170 yards (67 in the first half) and sacked him 4 times. Bobby Taylor intercepted 1 pass in the 4th quarter.

Philadelphia Rush Defense - They held Arizona to 117 yards rushing. 56 of those yards came on one Shipp run. The Cardinal has to abandon the running game early after the Eagles built a huge lead.

Philadelphia Special Teams - Brian Mitchell had a 45-yard kick return after the Cardinals scored their first touchdown. The great starting field position led to the Eagle's first touchdown just 6 plays later. David Akers had an unusually quiet day, as far as field goals go. He converted his only attempt (34 yards) and all 5 extra points.
