New England 20 at Detroit 12

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

New England Patriots:

QB Tom Brady was not sharp on the day.He could not find any receivers downfield, and often was left to throw screen passes. His longest completion of the day, a 28 yarder to David Patten was actually a deflection. This was the second game in three weeks that he has not thrown a touchdown pass.

RB Antowain Smith made Thanksgiving miserable for the Lions. He accounted for 80 yards rushing on the ground, including many carries during the game clinching drive that spanned over the last 9:46 of the game.He also got 5 carries inside the 10 yard line.

WR Troy Brown caught 10 balls for 111 yards, but was never used downfield. He was targeted 13 times, and is definitely Bradys favorite target.

Detroit Lions:

Rookie quarterback Joey Harrington continued his bad play on Thursday, throwing for 210 yards and 3 interceptions. All 3 of his interceptions were costly, as Detroit was either in scoring position or deep in their own zone.He has to learn to throw the ball away, or take a sack.

RB James Stewart was held in check by the surging New England defense. He finished with just 57 yards on 13 carries.Without Az-Zahir Hakims ability to stretch the field, New England was able to play more men up front.

Germane Crowell had his finest afternoon of the year, grabbing 5 balls for 46 yards. He was targeted 8 times, and is probably on the waiver wire in most leagues.Joey Harrington seems to be gaining a nice rapport with Crowell.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

New England Patriots:

QB:Tom Brady had a tough day, throwing for just 210 yards with no touchdowns. This is twice in the last three weeks that he has not thrown a touchdown pass. The Lions secondary covered the deep ball well, and even when Brady had chances, he overthrew his receivers.Late in the game he overthrew a wide open Daniel Graham for what would have been a game-clinching touchdown. His interception was the result of a bad decision to throw against his body, and it was in the red zone.

RB:Antowain Smith found success running to the left side of the New England line, finishing with 80 yards on 25 carries. He was used almost exclusively in the red zone, including 5 carries within the 10 yard line.He scored New Englands only offensive touchdown.

Kevin Faulk only touched the ball 6 times, and was not very effective.OC Charlie Weis seems to prefer the hot hand at running back, and today it was Antowain Smith.

WR:Troy Brown is a reception league machine, hauling in 10 catches for 111 yards.Unfortunately, if youre in a touchdown league, he is not having a good year.New England is using him in short slant patterns and screens, limiting his big play ability. The concentration on the deep ball has been centered on David Patten and Deion Branch.Brown had 13 targets on the day.

David Patten only caught 2 balls on the afternoon, but did average 18.0 yard per catch. His first reception of the day was a lucky tip off of Troy Browns hands. He dropped a ball later in the game that Tom Brady laid perfectly in his hands which would have resulted in a long completion.

TE:The Tight End derby in New England has shrunk down to just two contestants, Christian Fauria and Daniel Graham.Fauria is used more in goal line situations, but Graham has the big play ability.Graham had a nice screen play pass and catch which resulted in 16 yards and a 1st down.Tom Brady missed him late in the game on what would have been a definite touchdown.

Rush Defense:The New England front is playing better every week. They held James Stewart to just 57 yards on 13 carries.

Pass Defense:While they did not sack Joey Harrington on the day, they caused enough havoc to force three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.Tedy Bruschi left the game after being chopped blocked and did not return.DT Richard Seymour also left the game with a leg injury. The severity of both injuries is not know at this time.

Special Teams:PK Adam Vinatieri continues to be money, making all of his kicks on the afternoon.New Englands sudden failure at scoring touchdowns in the red zone is helping his stats.New England had a punt blocked, and Deion Branch almost returned a punt all the way for a touchdown.

Detroit Lions:

QB: Joey Harrington had one of his worst days as a pro, throwing three interceptions; all of which were costly. He just missed TE Mikhael Ricks in the end zone for a touchdown pass.Harrington needs to learn to throw the football away or take a sack.He is young right now, and still should be sought after in any keeper league.Learning on the job is never easy in the NFL, especially for quarterbacks.

RB:James Stewart didnt do as well as many thought he might rushing the football, finishing with 80 total yards. He struggled to find holes against the suddenly stout New England run defense. He left the game in the 4th quarter with a neck stinger, and did not return.

WR:Germane Crowell had his best day since coming back from injury, finishing with 5 catches for 46 yards (8 targets.)He could be just the spark that Detroit needs since losing Az-Zahir Hakim.Crowells ability to stretch the field hopefully should open up some running lanes for James Stewart.

Bill Schroeder only caught 2 balls for 27 yards, and was not even thrown to until the 3rd quarter.

Scotty Anderson grabbed 2 balls for 40 yards. He is Detroits home run threat, as you can tell by his 20.0 yard per reception.

TE:Mikhael Ricks is being used more frequently every week.He hauled in 2 balls for 18 yards, and was just out of bounds in the end zone for what would have been a touchdown. He was thrown to 6 times.

Rush Defense:Detroit played solid, but not spectacular.New England held the ball for the final 9:46 of the game.Detroit could not stop the short 3rd down plays.

Pass Defense:The Lions secondary took away the deep ball, but gave up plenty of yards and receptions underneath and over the middle. They failed to sack Tom Brady, but constantly applied pressure.

Special Teams:PK Jason Hanson would be a top 5 fantasy kicker on just about any other team in the NFL.He kicked four field goals, including two that were over 40 yards.Hes about as automatic as they come in the NFL.Chris Claiborne blocked a punt for Detroit. They also almost gave up a punt return for touchdown after they had to re-kick due to a penalty.

Washington 20 at Dallas 27

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Washington Redskins

Although Danny Wuerffel looked decent at times, and his numbers were good, (21 for 36 for 243 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions) he is not the answer for this offense and his 3 interceptions killed any chance at a Redskin victory. The Patrick Ramsey Watch is back on.

RB Stephen Davis looked nothing like the back that ran all over the Rams last week.He averaged just 2.6 yards per carry and was unable to bust off any runs longer than 10 yards. While it appeared early that the Redskins were going to run the ball, Dallas ability to shut them down took Davis out of the game.

WR Rod Gardner was very active catching 6 passes for 76 yards. He had great separation and made a nice catch on his 40 yard touchdown reception. He made Wuerffels numbers look better than they should have been.

WR Derrius Thompson was very active as well.He caught 6 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Dallas Cowboys:

QB Chad Hutchinson completed less than half of his passes for only 145 yards.Dont let the high score fool you.He was only moderately effective as the starting quarterback and was aided immensely by the Redskins inability to stop the run.

RB Emmitt Smith was fired up and rushed for 144 yards averaging 6.3 yards per carry. This wasnt one of those games that Dallas relied on him strictly at the end to control the clock, he picked up 58 rushing yards in the first half and got Dallas into the flow of the game early.

Troy Hambrick was surprisingly ineffective considering Smiths dominating performance. He was dreadful in the first half picking up only 2 yards on 4 carries.Considering Dallas averaged over 6 yards per carry in the first half, his 0.5 per carry stood out.He finished the day with 9 carries for 23 yards.

Joey Galloway caught only 3 passes for 54 yards but one of those catches was a 41 yard touchdown. He was targeted 9 times by Hutchinson but they couldnt seem to connect until the 4th quarter touchdown.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Washington Redskins:

QB: Although Danny Wuerffel looked decent at times, and his numbers were good, (21 for 36 for 243 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions) he is not the answer for this offense and his 3 interceptions killed any chance at a Redskin victory. While the interception that Dallas ran back for a touchdown was off Kenny Watsons hands, the first 2 interceptions were well-deserved.The first was a severely under thrown pass to an open receiver and the second was a pass that he threw on the run into a crowd of 3 defenders and one Redskin receiver. He nearly had 3 additional interceptions.

The Patrick Ramsey Watch is back on.

RB: Stephen Davis looked nothing like the back that ran all over the Rams last week.He averaged just 2.6 yards per carry and was unable to bust off any runs longer than 10 yards. While it appeared early that the Redskins were going to run the ball, Dallas ability to shut them down took Davis out of the game.

Kenny Watson was not a positive factor in this game with only 1 rush and 2 receptions. The interception that Dallas returned for a touchdown that turned the tide of the game, bounced off his hands.

WR: Rod Gardner was very active catching 6 passes for 76 yards. He had great separation and made a nice catch on his 40 yard touchdown reception. He made Wuerffels numbers look better than they should have been.

Derrius Thompson was very active as well.He caught 6 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

TE: As usual, Walter Rasby was announced as the Redskin TE and was not heard from again.

Pass Defense: The Redskin defense started out extremely hot collecting 4 sacks and numerous hurries in the first half.Fatigue and injuries rendered them silent in the second half as Dallas focused on running the ball. They did not force any turn overs.

Rush Defense:Even before Armstead and Trotter left to injuries this group could not stop the Dallas running game. They surrendered 98 yards in the first half.Despite leading 14 to 10 at the half and 20 to 10 in the 3rd quarter, they allowed 113 yards in the second half.

Special Teams: James Tuthills missed extra point started the spiral downhill for the Redskins. He also had a 36 yard field goal blocked. He should not be depended upon as your kicker even verses weak opponents.

Dallas Cowboys:

QB: Chad Hutchinson completed less than half of his passes for only 145 yards.Dont let the high score fool you.He was only moderately effective as the starting quarterback and was aided immensely by the Redskins inability to stop the run.

RB: Quite a bit was made both before and after the game about Emmitt Smith wanting to prove something to Steve Spurrier and the Redskins. They showed him on the sideline at during the National Anthem and he looked like Mike Tyson about to devour Leon Spinks. He did.He rushed for 144 yards averaging 6.3 yards per carry.

Michael Wiley was much more effective. He looked explosive on his 2 carries picking up 31 yards.

WR: Joey Galloway caught only 3 passes for 54 yards but one of those catches was a 41 yard touchdown. He was targeted 9 times by Hutchinson but they couldnt seem to connect until the 4th quarter touchdown.

Antonio Bryant had a typical rookie game.He dropped the first pass thrown to him but looked exceptional on the 29 yard touchdown catch. He fumbled on his only other reception, but it was recovered by Dallas.

Darnay Scott got a couple looks and caught 1 pass for 11 yards but is clearly the third option in this offense which is not producing enough offense to make him a play.

TE: Tony McGee caught only one pass for 10 yards and should not be considered even in deep leagues that start tight ends.

Pass Defense: Although they put little pressure on Wuerffel on the day, the Cowboys did intercept 4 passes (one on the final play of the game) and return one for a touchdown.Roy Williams has 3 consecutive games with an interception.

Rush Defense:Stephen Davis had little room to run and averaged only 2.6 yards per carry on this unit.Aside from Wuerffel scrambles they allowed only 55 yards rushing on the entire day.

Special Teams:Billy Cundiff kicked 2 of his 3 field goals and all 3 of his extra point attempts.

Tennessee 32 at New York Giants 29

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

*The wind played a major factor until overtime in this game, especially in regard to field position and special teams.Tennessee opted to punt rather than attempt a 46-yard field goal into the wind.In addition, the punters had problems getting any distance on their punts and kickoffs went much shorter than usual when kicking into the wind.

Tennessee Titans:

QB Steve McNair is an absolute warrior.Playing with a very painful case of turf toe as well as bruised ribs, McNair led the Titans to a dramatic come from behind victory to remain in contention for the AFC South title. He finished with 372 total yards and 3 touchdowns, and ran in the 2-point conversion to send the game into OT.

The struggles of RB Eddie George continue. He ran the ball 20 times for just 64 yards (3.2 YPC), though he did manage another short touchdown run.He came out on every third down for Robert Holcombe and actually didnt see the field during the Titans game-winning drive.

WR Derrick Mason rewarded owners who have kept him around through his injury. He is clearly McNairs favorite target, both in the red zone and between the 20s.Caught 12 of the 15 balls thrown his way for 116 yards and a nice touchdown grab on a low throw.

New York Giants:

The Giants certainly played well enough to win this game. What it came down to was Steve McNair beating them. The Giants have had a lot of difficulty with opposing quarterbacks who can run, and McNair was just the latest example.New York inexplicably played very soft coverage on the Titans game-winning drive.

Special teams were much better today for New York.Matt Bryant hit all three of his field goals and there were no major problems with snaps, holds, etc. today.

RB Tiki Barber had 64 yards rushing, but 42 of the yards came on one play.On his other 21 carries, he totaled 22 yards. In other words, he was shut down.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Tennessee Titans:

QB: Steve McNair put in a gutsy day as he was announced as the starter just before game time. Took a painkilling shot in the locker room and went out to have one of the best games of his career. He is the unquestioned leader of the team, especially with the struggles of Eddie George.McNair made all the right plays today, completing 70% of his passes for over 300 yards.Despite the injured foot, he was able to take off and run when he needed to.He made several key plays with his feet, including a huge 11-yard run on 2nd and 10 during the game-tying drive.

RB:Eddie George has been inconsistent but he was a factor in this game with 83 yards and a touchdown. But he averaged just 3.2 yards per carry and never got into any kind of rhythm running the football. Much was made of George sitting last week while Holcombe played. Coach Jeff Fisher stated clearly that Eddie George was his RB to which George replied, Well see. George had 20 carries but it was very interesting to see him on the bench again at the end of the game as Holcombe had every Titan carry in overtime.

Robert Holcombe came into the game on all third down situations. He didnt exactly light up the stat sheet either, but at least showed a burst at times. Clearly has the faith of the coaching staff though as he carried the ball exclusively in overtime while Eddie George was on the sidelines.

John Simon played sparingly, but was targeted on a deep pass from McNair that he should have caught for a touchdown.

WR:Derrick Mason was already a good fantasy start before Kevin Dysons injury. Now, he is the only reliable threat Tennessee has and appears to be on his way towards another big second half.Mason was targeted 15 times, and hauled in 12 receptions for 116 yards and a TD.He was targeted in all the big spots, and came through again and again for the Titans.

The loss of Kevin Dyson may not hurt Tennessee much, if at all.The combo of Justin McCareins (6 targets) & Drew Bennett (7 targets) combined to total 10 receptions for 94 yards and a TD.However, it appears that neither of these two players will be worthy of a fantasy start unless something happens to Derrick Mason.

TE:For years, Frank Wycheck was one of the most consistent producers at the tight end position. This year, his role has been reduced and he will not come anywhere near his usual 70 catches for the season.Still, McNair showed how much faith he has in Wycheck in a big spot with the late TD pass.

Erron Kinney was supposed to play a much bigger role this year.He caught 1 pass for 10 yards, giving him 11 receptions on the year.

Pass Defense:Awful.Amani Toomer, Ron Dixon, and Jeremy Shockey all had big games. In addition, the Titans gave the Giants opportunity after opportunity with three pass interference penalties in the end zone at various points in the game.Kerry Collins was sacked just once, and though there was decent pressure at times, Collins was able to make all the reads and find the open man most times.CB Samari Rolle injured his shoulder and left for X-Rays.LB Keith Bulluck appeared to have injured his hamstring.

Rush Defense:Save for a 42-yard scamper by Tiki Barber, the Giants were utterly shut down by Tennessee.Barbers first 10 carries went for 4 yards, and other than his long run he totaled just 22 yards on his other 21 carries.Every time Barber tried to go somewhere, there was a Titan waiting for him.The Titans did an outstanding job shutting down one of the leagues hottest backs.

Special Teams:Joe Nedney hit the game-winning 38-yard field goal on Tennessees first overtime possession. He had earlier missed a 55-yard attempt that he kicked off the back of one of his own linemen.Nedney also had two saving tackles on kick returns. This doesnt earn him any fantasy points, but it does reflect well on Nedney to the coaches. Not that Nedneys job is in danger, but stuff like that sometimes is the difference between keeping and losing your job if/when you struggle.

New York Giants:

QB:Kerry Collins had a good game.He had the same tough conditions to deal with as McNair and like McNair was able to make most of the tough throws.Hes got experience dealing with the famous Giants Stadium wind these past few years, so fantasy owners shouldnt be too concerned about any drop-off in productivity with the cold weather.Collins finished 22 of 36 for 283 yards and most importantly 2 touchdowns. That has been his biggest problem so far, getting the ball into the end zone.

RB:For much of the game, Tiki Barber did absolutely nothing. Then he had a 42-yard run in which Titans players were falling all over themselves trying to catch him. Then, following the 42-yard run, Barber went back to doing nothing.Because of the long run and because he scored a touchdown, most fantasy owners will take these numbers. They should know, however, that Barber had a terrible game overall. He also slightly injured his ankle on a late carry but returned to the game.

Ron Dayne was a little more involved on one drive, even catching 3 passes. However, as has been the story of Daynes career, just when you think hes getting involved in the flow of the game, an injury puts a halt to any momentum he may have been gaining.

WR:Amani Toomer has been playing very well of late, especially since Ike Hilliard went down for the season with a shoulder injury.Toomer caught 5 balls for 104 yards, and was Collins main target in the 2nd half.He caught a 34-yard pass and was tackled at the 1-yard line.

Ron Dixon returned from his knee injury in a big way, catching 5 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.Dixon received an equal share of the looks as Toomer, and finished with near-identical numbers. He did drop a catchable 35-yard pass early in the game, but he made up for it with the touchdown later on.

Herman Moore was inactive for this weeks game.

TE:Finally, the Giants tight end catches a touchdown pass.Of course Im referring to Dan Campbell, who caught a 1-yard TD on a play-action fake by Collins.Jeremy Shockey did have a good game though, despite not scoring (7 receptions for 71 yards).Shockeys fine though as he is getting the looks (11 targets), especially in the red zone (3 targets).

Pass Defense:The only sack the Giants registered wasnt a sack at all.It was a forced fumble on a play where McNair was attempting to pass the ball and had it stripped. The Giants got some pressure on McNair at times, but for the most part he had enough time to make all his reads and make his throws. As far as the pass coverage, CB Jason Sehorn started due to the injury to Will Peterson.Sehorn is not the corner he used to be.The Titans picked on him all day.On the game-winning drive in OT by the Titans, the Giants DBs were playing WELL off the Tennessee wideouts, giving them 9 and 10-yard cushions at times.Overall, it was a very poor performance by the Giants defensively.

Rush Defense:Did a great job stuffing Eddie George and Robert Holcombe, but couldnt contain Steve McNair.McNair didnt post Michael Vick-type numbers, but he made things happen on the ground when he needed to.The Giants have struggled all year with running quarterbacks, and this was the latest example.LB Michael Barrow took on Robert Holcombe helmet to helmet and paid the price, suffering a concussion that took him out of the game.He was conscious and alert the whole time, but was clearly rattled by the hit.

Special Teams:K Matt Bryant hit on all three of his field goal attempts.Last night, the Giants cut long snapper Bob Jones and signed Dan OLeary.OLearys first snap was somewhat high, but wouldnt be discussed if he wasnt a brand new snapper. In the return game, Delvin Joyce was outstanding. He continually had great returns, setting up the Giants with outstanding field position all day.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Pittsburgh Steelers

QB Kordell Stewart moved the ball well as Pittsburgh dominated statistically. He called his own number on three running plays and scrambled for 84 yards rushing.Led Plaxico Burress beautifully for 54 yards on the opening drive to set the tone.

RB Jerome Bettis did not touch the ball on the Steeler opening drive for a field goal.He got some tough yards up the middle after breaking his nose in the first half.Doesn't have the speed to turn the corner or the moves to cut back but has always been an efficient power runner.

The ball deflected off of Burress' shoulder on Stewart's only interception.Burress could have done a better job either coming down with it or making sure it wasn't picked off.Burress was overthrown in the end zone and had a post route attempt broken up in the red zone. Was also the intended receiver on an out route that was thrown low by Stewart.

WR Hines Ward was the primary target. He dropped a short out route near the goal line.Stewart missed him on a hitch in the red zone.Jason Craft broke up a crossing route attempt to Ward.

Kicker Jeff Reed had another big day in his second week with the Steelers.Reed hit all six attempts including a 50-yarder that proved to be the game winner. His 46-yard field goal was a line drive that squirted through.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars stubbornly went at the Steelers' strength by insisting to run the ball.Fred Taylor had some success but not enough to sustain drives.Taylor was able to slip through narrow holes on occasion to get into the Steeler secondary.Picked up 25 of his 80 yards in the fourth quarter when the Steelers were keying the pass.

QB Mark Brunell had trouble picking out open receivers against a maligned Steeler secondary as passes were broken up by the defensive backs and linebackers.Brunell was constantly under pressure and took several shots as he released the ball.

WR Jimmy Smith did not get many good opportunities. He committed an offensive pass interference penalty and still could not get his feet inbounds on an out-and-up on the sidelines.Brunell threw an out as Smith went up field on an incompletion.Smith drew an illegal contact on Chad Scott.A slant was broken up by Dewayne Washington on the two-point conversion attempt.

Tight end Kyle Brady committed an offensive pass interference penalty and dropped the pass on a short out.He was led a tad too much on a deep out that went incomplete. He bobbled but caught the 42-yard touchdown with no one around him.

QB: Kordell Stewart moved the ball well as Pittsburgh dominated statistically. He called his own number on three running plays and scrambled for 84 yards rushing.Led Plaxico Burress beautifully for 54 yards on the opening drive to set the tone.

Tommy Maddox was in the game as the holder on Field Goals and Extra Points. Stewart has been the total team player saying all the right things about it being Maddoxs job. This will surely be a hot topic this week but most expect to see Maddox starting at QB next week.

RB: Jerome Bettis - Did not touch the ball on the Steeler opening drive for a field goal.He got some tough yards up the middle after breaking his nose in the first half.Doesn't have the speed to turn the corner or the moves to cut back but has always been an efficient power runner.

Kevin Lockett - Only got one look in the place of inactivated Patrick Johnson.

TE: Kyle Brady - Committed an offensive pass interference penalty and dropped the pass on a short out.He was led a tad too much on a deep out that went incomplete. He bobbled but caught the 42-yard touchdown with no one around him.

Jaguars Pass Defense: Jason Craft showed good coverage.Steelers were allowed to pick up significant yardage after the catches.

Jaguars Rush Defense: Paul Spicer was all over the field making plays.Jacksonville could not contain Stewart on the scramble and draws.

Jaguars Special Teams: Elvis Joseph starred on punt coverage and kickoff returns.Richie Cunningham was solid in his only field goal attempt.

Baltimore 27 at Cincinnati 23

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Baltimore Ravens:

QB Jeff Blake is doing nothing to make the coaching staff keep him on as starter when Chris Redman is healthy.

RB Jamal Lewis went over 1,000 yards for the season (a great accomplishment considering the knee injury last season). In this game, the offensive line gave Lewis huge holes to run though. He ran hard and ran well.

The Baltimore WR corps consists of Travis Taylor and a box of rocks.

PK Matt Stover made a 39-yard FG that was called back due to holding. He then missed from 49 yards.

Baltimore won this game due in large part to TDs scored on an INT return and punt-block return.

Cincinnati Bengals:

QB Jon Kitna would be a good NFL QB if he could ever keep himself from forcing the ball. He needs to realize that sometimes the best play is to just toss the ball out of bounds. That said Kitna is definitely worth having on your roster.

RB Corey Dillon went over 1,000 yards for the season (his sixth 1000-yard season in six years as a pro). He is only the fourth RB to accomplish this (others are Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, and Curtis Martin).

PK Neil Rackers missed a PAT (hit the right upright). Also, at the close of the 1st half, he was short on a 55-yard FG attempt. However, Baltimore was flagged for leaping (which occurs when a player jumps and lands on the pile) which is a 15-yard penalty. Rackers was then successful from 40 yards to end the half.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Baltimore Ravens

QB: Jeff Blake (10/19 for 115 yds / 2 TDs / 0 INTs) did not have a quality performance. Even though the Ravens are winning, its not due to Blake and the offense. The defense is obviously carrying this team. If/when Chris Redman is fully healthy, he should return to the starting lineup as Blake has done nothing to secure his hold on the job.

RB: Jamal Lewis (22 for 121 / 1 rec for 4) had an excellent day running the ball. His line gave him good running lanes, and Lewis ran hard all game long. He now has gone over the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

Chester Taylor (2 for 9 / 1 rec for 16) relieved Lewis for a few plays.

Alan Ricard (1 for 4 / 1 rec for 3) had a play on special teams where he flattened the Head Linesman ref. The official was dazed but stayed in the game.

WR: Travis Taylor (3 for 59 / 1 TD) continued his good play with a TD where he split a double-team with a double-move. Great route running made this play an easy TD.

TE: Todd Heap (3 for 30 / 1 TD) continues to be a big part of this offense. Nothing new to add here as everyone that has the guy on their team already knows hes a must start each week.

James Jones (1 for 3) caught a pass but wasnt a factor.

Ravens Rush Defense: The Ravens held Dillon in check for most of the day as the Cincinnati back had no run longer than 10 yards. On the first play from scrimmage, the Bengals tried a reverse pitch-back where Kitna was to throw deep, but the Ravens run defense snuffed the play and caused a fumble. This is a disciplined unit and is very difficult to run against.

Ravens Pass Defense: Overall, the performance was poor. Chris McAlister played coming off injury but was not his normal shut-down self. While he did flash his talent, he also allowed a TD and was beaten a few other times as well. The Ravens defense allowed Kitna to complete his first 10 passes. On the good side, Chad Williams intercepted a pass at his two-yard line and returned it for a TD. Also, Gary Baxter just missed a spectacular INT.

Cincinnati Bengals

QB: Jon Kitna (30/46 for 308 / 2 TDs / 1 INT / 1 lost fumble) started the game on fire as he completed his first ten passes. For most of the game, he looked like an NFL-quality QB, but there were a handful of plays that were absolutely head scratchers. On, most of these plays, Kitna forced the ball into tight coverage. On one, at the end of the first half, he hit Ravens DB Chad Williams in the numbers. Williams returned the INT for a 98-yard TD.

RB: Corey Dillon (23 for 70 / 6 rec for 28 / 1 TD) ran hard but found little room against the stiff Baltimore run defense. Two good notes for Dillon: 1) He scored his first career TD against the Ravens, and 2) He went over 1000 yards for the sixth time in his six seasons. He joins Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, and Curtis Martin as the only players to accomplish this feat.

Rudi Johnson (4 for 10 / 1 rec for 3) replaced Dillon for a few plays in the fourth quarter when the starter was poked in the eye.

WR: Ron Dugans (7 for 81) was heavily involved in the passing game and responded fairly well. He will likely continue to be looked at more often in light of the release of Michael Westbrook.

Chad Johnson (4 for 78 / 1 TD) is obviously the most talented WR on the team. He was blanketed most of the day, but the Bengals were finally able to get him open for a few receptions. His TD was an excellent catch.

TJ Houshmandzadeh (4 for 35 / 1 TD) will also see more action with the departure of Westbrook.

Peter Warrick (3 for 48 / 1 run for -11) just doesnt seem to have what it takes to be a consistent every-week threat.

TE: Matt Schobel (4 for 32) was utilized often in the passing game. If you are in a large (14 or 16 teams) league, consider Schobel as he is easily the most talented TE on the roster.

Bengals Pass Defense: Cincinnati allowed very little through the air, but suffered mightily when they did break down. Of Blakes 115 passing yards, 61 were accumulated on the two TDs.

Bengals Rush Defense: This unit was ripped for big gains all day long. Many times, Lewis had gaping holes at the line at wasnt touched for several yards. Definitely not a good effort from the Cincinnati run defense.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

St Louis Rams:

This game was all about fumbles.9 to be exact.Nobody from either team could hold onto the ball. The Rams had 5 while the Eagles had 4.

QB Kurt Warner cant possibly be healthy. He fumbled the ball 3 times and was intercepted twice. One of his interceptions was returned for the games lone touchdown. He threw for 218 yards, mostly targeting Bruce and Holt.He doesnt look confident.

OT Orlando Pace went out early in the game with a hamstring injury.Kurt Warner was sacked 8 times.

RB Lamar Gordon started the game, but Marshall Faulk came in at the end of the 1st quarter, and got most of the playing time. Both running backs were ineffective.Gordon ran for 30 yards and Faulk ran for 29 yards.Gordon fumbled and lost the ball once.Faulk didnt look like he was fully healthy. He didnt have the burst or the moves that weve come to expect from him.

WR Isaac Bruce caught his 600th career pass.Overall he caught 5 passes for 74 yards. He was the target of the Troy Vincent interception in the end zone.

Philadelphia Eagles:

AJ Feeley, the third string quarterback, played a very effective game. His numbers werent outstanding, but it wasnt all his fault. He completed 14 passes for 181 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He would have had a 24-yard touchdown pass to James Thrash, but it was nullified due to a Tra Thomas penalty. His receivers dropped a lot of passes too.Feeley could have had close to 300 yards, if it werent for all the mistakes.

The running game reverted back to the Running Back By Committee.Duce Staley and Dorsey Levens saw equal playing time.Staley had 32 yards on the ground and 22 yards through the air.Levens was more effective on the ground gathering 64 yards, but he did lose a fumble.

Philadelphias defense came to play.Bobby Taylor intercepted a pass intended for Holt for a touchdown. They sacked Warner 8 times, including 4 sacks by N.D. Kalu.Troy Vincent intercepted an under thrown pass to Bruce in the end zone. They held the Rams to 3 points.Whens the last time anyone has been able to do that?

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

St. Louis Rams:

QB: Kurt Warner (20/42, 218 yards, 2 INT) did not look good... his hand is definitely still bothering him. It looks as if he is still not able to get a proper grip on the ball at times. This affects his velocity and accuracy. He lost the ball during a pump fake and fumbled on a sack. One of his INT's proved very costly as it was returned for a TD. Not having Marshall Faulk healthy and able to go the whole game does not help and takes away an important option for Warner. Offensive line not being able to protect him doesn't help either. Especially after all-pro tackle Orlando Pace left the game with an injury. Warner was on the run the whole game, and took several good hits. Warner was playing against one of the leagues top defenses however. And he did throw for 301 yards and 2 TD's the previous week. But this was a tough game.

RB: Lamar Gordon started and had 7 carries for 30 yards. He out gained Marshall Faulk in less carries, but also lost a fumble after a 7 yard gain on the Rams first possession in the third quarter and pretty much did not play after that. Gordon ran the ball well when the Rams did decide to run the ball, but not having the versatility of a healthy Marshall Faulk severely limits the effectiveness of the Rams offense.Gordon was ineffective enough that Martz decided to go with a not quite healthy Faulk.

Marshall Faulk had 29 yards on 9 carries and added 22 yards on 4 receptions. The Rams did not utilize the running game too much, and Faulk and Lamar Gordon had a total of 16 carries between the two of them.Faulk pretty much played the entire 2nd half after Lamar Gordon fumbled on the Rams first possession in the 3rd quarter.

WR: Torry Holt had a decent game (6 receptions for 80 yards), but did not see the endzone. Holt also lost a fumble, which was challenged by Rams coach Mike Martz. The ruling was upheld, although it did look as if Holt was indeed down by contact on the replay.

Isaac Bruce also did OK (5 receptions for 74 yards), but also did not see any shots in the endzone. He did catch his 600th career pass. The Eagles secondary did a good job of not giving Bruce or Holt a chance to get open down the field. Bruce did catch a nice 28 yard pass from Warner. It was Warners best pass of the day.

Ricky Proehl caught 3 passes for 29 yards.2 of the receptions were 3rd down conversions.

TE: Ernie Conwell caught 2 passes for 13 yards... Warner did not look in his direction very much during the game.

Pass Defense: The Rams pass defense was very good. They held Eagle QB A.J. Feeley to just 181 yards passing. They did allow one passing TD that was nullified on an Eagle penalty. They put decent pressure on Feeley with their pass rush. Not a bad performance by the secondary at all.

Rush Defense: Played decently as they allowed 96 combined yards between Eagle RB's Dorsey Levens and Duce Staley, but really didn't allow the Eagle offense to establish any sort of rhythm. A good performance over all by the Rams defense.

Special Teams Jeff Wilkins hit a 22 yarder, but missed a 55-yard field goal.

Philadelphia Eagles:

QB:AJ Feeley, the third string quarterback, played a very effective game. His numbers werent outstanding, but it wasnt his fault. He completed 14 passes for 181 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He would have had a 24-yard touchdown pass to James Thrash, but it was nullified due to a Tra Thomas penalty. In the fourth quarter he threw a 22-yard pass to Chad Lewis, who fumbled it on the Rams 10-yard line. His receivers dropped a lot of passes too.Feeley could have had close to 300 yards, if it werent for all the mistakes. He fumbled the ball on his first possession.

RB: Dorsey Levens had 2 fewer carries than Duce Staley, but gained twice as much yardage. Levens had 64 yards on 12 carries. Levens ran the ball very well when given the chance, and looked fast and powerful. He did cough up the ball however, right after the Eagles had recovered a fumble from the Rams. Overall a very good performance from the veteran in a very tough defensive game.

Duce Staley gained 32 yards on 14 carries and added another 22 on three receptions.Staley looked a bit flat, and lacked power hitting the holes. Staley appears to be splitting carries now with Levens, not a good sign.

Brian Westbrook ran once for 4 yards. He caught a 9-yard pass but fumbled it.He streaked down the sideline for a long pass that hit him right in the chest, but he dropped the ball.

WR: Todd Pinkston was relatively quiet in the game. He had 3 catches for 64 yards... none of the Eagle receivers were particularly productive in this game.

Antonio Freeman had 3 catches for 44 yards. Again, none of the Eagle receivers were very effective in the game due to QB A.J. Feeley's lack of experience and a tough Ram secondary. Freeman also had several dropped passes early in the game.

James Thrash had just two catches for 16 yards, although he did catch a nice 23 yarder from Feeley in the endzone for an apparent TD, but it was nullified on a penalty on an Eagle lineman.

TE: Chad Lewis had a decent day for a TE, catching 3 passes for 44 yards, including a 22 yarder. Feeley gave him several looks as the Eagle WR's had a tough time getting open.

Pass Defense The Eagles pass defense was phenomenal. They held the Rams out of the end zone all game.Bobby Taylor picked off Warner for the games lone touchdown.Troy Vincent intercepted Warner in the end zone. They put constant pressure on Warner, making it hard for him to relax in the pocket. They sacked him 8 times including 4 by N.D. Kalu.

Rush Defense They held both Lamar Gordon and Marshall Faulk in check. The two backs totaled 59 yards on the ground. The longest running play, by Gordon, was for 10 yards.

Special Teams David Akers hit his lone 31-yard field goal.Sean Landetta had to punt 8 times.Brian Mitchell didnt break off any long runs today.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Buffalo Bills

QB Drew Bledsoe and the Bills' offense had been struggling of late. Who would have thought they'd explode against Miami on a snowy Sunday? Bledsoe, despite constant pressure by the Miami defense, played superbly. Bledsoe played a nearly perfect game and his slump may be over.

A great day for Bills WR corps - especially considering the weather conditions. Eric Moulds had a monster day including a one handed circus catch for TD. Peerless Price only caught two catches, but he made them count as both were TDs.

RB Travis Henry ate up the Miami defense. Not only did Henry amass 178 total yards and a TD, but his 35 rushing attempts were important. Henry usually gets better with more attempts, and his ability to kill time off the clock in the 4th quarter was critical for the Bills.

Miami Dolphins

QB Ray Lucas was horrible, but he did get a lot of pressure from the Buffalo defense. Lucas only managed to throw for a pathetic 40 yards and he fumbled twice - losing one of the fumbles.Jay Fiedler had to play because of Lucas' injury, and he clearly was rusty. Fiedler only managed to throw for 15 yards and also threw an interception.

RB Ricky Williams destroyed the Buffalo defense. Again, he amazed people with his speed. Williams' day could have even been better had Buffalo not fallen behind in the third quarter.

Normally, Miami's defense has been tough. But in 2002, this unit has been erratic. On a windy, snowy day, Bledsoe picked apart the Miami secondary with the precision of a surgeon. The rush defense struggled as badly as the pass defense.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Buffalo Bills

QB: Drew Bledsoe and the Bills' offense had been struggling of late. Who would have thought they'd explode against Miami on a snowy Sunday? Bledsoe, despite constant pressure by the Miami defense, played superbly. He threw for 306 yards and three TDs with no interceptions. The running game certainly helped Bledsoe, but credit Kevin Gilbride for letting Bledsoe air it out vs. the normally stingy Miami secondary. Bledsoe played a nearly perfect game and his slump may be over.

WR: A great day for Bills WR corps - especially considering the weather conditions. Eric Moulds had a monster day with five catches for 130 yards and a TD. Moulds' TD catch was a spectacular 57 yard reception where the Miami defender tipped the ball towards Moulds and Moulds was able to snag the ball with one hand.

Peerless Price only caught two catches, but he made them count. They were two huge TD catches for 93 total yards. Price's ability to get open continues to be a big help to Moulds.

RB: Travis Henry ate up the Miami defense. Not only did Henry amass 178 total yards and a TD, but his 35 rushing attempts were important. Henry usually gets better with more attempts, and his ability to kill time off the clock in the 4th quarter was critical for the Bills. Henry displayed power and quickness on Sunday and was a large reason for the Bills' win.

Larry Centers pitched in with 43 total yards.

TE: These TEs are mostly used as blockers as Dave Moore and Jay Riemersma only caught one pass each.

Pass Defense: This unit was stellar. On a day where Bledsoe threw for 306 yards, Jay Fiedler and Ray Lucas could only manage a pathetic 65 yards in the air.

Rush Defense: The Buffalo run defense looked about as bad as any team in the league - rivaling Kansas City and Seattle's porous defenses. Ricky Williams torched the Buffalo front seven all day.

Miami Dolphins

QB: Ray Lucas was horrible, but he did get a lot of pressure from the Buffalo defense. Lucas only managed to throw for a pathetic 40 yards and he fumbled twice - losing one of the fumbles. Lucas left in the second half with an injury and Jay Fiedler replaced him.

Jay Fiedler had to play because of Lucas' injury, and he clearly was rusty. Fiedler only managed to throw for 15 yards and also threw an ugly interception. It was not clear if Fiedler's interception was due to his thumb injury or the bad weather.

WR: This unit wasn't asked to do much, and it performed that way. Chris Chambers and Dedric Ward only caught a pathetic three catches for 28 yards.

RB: For years, Miami has struggled in December and January. Why? No running game. Say hello to Ricky Williams. Williams destroyed the Buffalo defense. Williams gashed Buffalo for 228 yards and two TDs. Williams only needs a small hole, and once he gets loose, he is hard to catch. Miami's first offensive play from scrimmage was a perfect example of how dangerous he can be. Once he broke through the Buffalo line, his speed took over. Williams' day could have even been better had Miami not fallen behind in the third quarter.

TE:Jed Weaver fared better than Randy McMichael. Weaver caught only two passes but one of them was for a TD. McMichael was completely ineffective - catching two passes for two yards and fumbling once.

Pass Defense: Normally, Miami's pass defense has been tough. But in 2002, this unit has been erratic. On a windy, snowy day, Bledsoe picked apart the Miami secondary with the precision of a surgeon.

Rush Defense: Struggled as badly as the pass defense. Travis Henry ripped the Miami front seven for a huge day.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

DE Simeon Rice played an outstanding game with three sacks, a forced fumble for a safety, and five tackles. He is very fast off the snap and leads the NFL in sacks.Rice claims he is the best DE in the league, and it sure looked like it tonight as he dominated Saints OL Kyle Turley. The line pressured Brooks heavily in the first half, but struggled to sustain the pressure in the second half as the Saints adjusted.

WR Keenan McCardell was busy throughout the night, primarily on short patterns. He finished with 11 catches and 107 yards and a touchdown as the Bucs took advantage of a match up they must have liked.Keyshawn Johnson was targeted throughout the night but had trouble connecting. This is most likely nothing to worry about.

The Bucs offense is efficient with Alstott running the ball.Alstott took a short dump off pass 44-yards for a touchdown in the second quarter showing surprising speed on the play.

Brad Johnson played his usual game where he was accurate but unspectacular. He led a clutch touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to bring the Bucs within three converting two fourth downs along the way.

New Orleans Saints

The Saints won this game despite having injury problems to deal with.Aaron Brooks had a good game against the best defense in the league despite being pressured all night. It wasnt always pretty, but Brooks was able to put up solid fantasy numbers.Brooks left the game in the fourth quarter with his bruised shoulder and was replaced by Jake Delhomme.

RB Deuce McAllister started the game despite his sore ankle. He limped off the field after his first carry in the second half but returned shortly. He managed a good game against a tough defense, but it is clear that he played at less than 100%.Keep an eye out.

WR Joe Horn managed to get wide open multiple times in this game. His good numbers against this incredible defense solidifies his fantasy status as a must play every week.Jake Reed had a surprising day as the fourth WR option.Donte Stallworth was targeted periodically, but the depth of the WR core in New Orleans may be hurting Stallworths ability to sustain solid fantasy numbers.

The Saints special teams and defense were major factors. The Saints special teams forced a big fumble on a kickoff in the third quarter, but the Bucs forced a fumble on the next play. Michael Lewis continues looking great returning kicks, and had a 66-yard return in the third quarter. The defense held the Bucs to only 34 yards on the ground and forced the Bucs to the air. They pressured Brad Johnson throughout the night and only allowed short receptions.CB Dale Carter left the game permanently in the fourth quarter with a left shoulder strain.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

QB:Brad Johnson missed Keyshawn on an easy pass early in the game, forcing the Bucs to punt, and also missed McCardell on the following drive.Besides these plays, Johnson was his usual self with good accuracy. At one point in the second quarter, the Bucs had 15 pass attempts to only four runs. His 44-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter was simply a dump off to Alstott who did the rest.He had not thrown an interception in three straight games coming into this game but that streak ended in the fourth quarter when he was hit throwing the ball.Johnson led a huge touchdown drive in the late fourth quarter to draw Tampa Bay within three.

WR: Keyshawn Johnson almost made a terrific catch on a tipped ball, but Dale Carter knocked the ball away on a great defensive play.He was targeted throughout the night but had trouble connecting.Nothing to worry about.Johnson drew a huge pass interference call with under five minutes left in the fourth quarter that led to a Bucs touchdown and also got the two-point conversion.

Keenan McCardell caught two short passes to open the game.He saw a lot of balls thrown his way early in the game, mainly on short patterns. He finished the first half with 6 catches and 73 yards. He continued to be a primary target in the second half as the Bucs took advantage of a match up they clearly liked.McCardell made a clutch touchdown catch as the game neared its close. He finished with 11 catches and 107 yards and a touchdown.

Joe Jurevicius was not a major factor in this game.He had a bad drop late in the fourth quarter. Jurevicius owners who were hoping hed take over the #2 WR spot will have to keep hoping.

RB: Michael Pittman started the game in the backfield in a single back set.He had a great Barry Sanders-like run in the first quarter called back for an offensive face mask, but he had only managed a few yards after a bunch of great moves. The offensive line didnt open many holes for Pittman. He was dinged in the second quarter but walked off the field and played throughout the remainder of the game.

Mike Alstott switched to tailback in the late first quarter after playing fullback for most of the period. The offense seems more efficient with Alstott running the ball, although its hard toexplain why because Pittman usually looks fine running the ball.Alstott took a short dump off pass 44-yards for a touchdown in the second quarter showing surprising speed.Neither Pittman nor Alstott could really get going as the Bucs were forced to the air by the Saints defense.

TE: Ken Dilger got his first catch in the third quarter for a first down.Ricky Dudley was not a factor.

K: Martin Gramatica hit the upright on a 43-yard attempt in the second quarter but didnt get the bounce he needed. In the third quarter, he made a 51-yarder.He finished the game one for two.

Special Teams:After the game, the Bucs still have never returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Bucs Pass Defense: DE Simeon Rice made two consecutive sacks in the first quarter forcing the Saints into a long field goal miss.Rice got to Brooks again and forced a fumble out of the end zone for a safety. He is very fast off the snap and leads the NFL in sacks.Rice claims he is the best DE in the league, and it sure looked like it tonight as he dominated Saints OL Kyle Turley early in the game. The Bucs forced another huge fumble in the third quarter after the Saints got the ball on a Bucs special team turnover. The line pressured Brooks all night, and is really establishing itself as one of the best to assemble.Safety Dexter Jackson limped off the field after a huge hit in the second quarter.

Bucs Rush Defense: With four minutes left in the first quarter, the Bucs defense had only allowed seven total yards after several Saints series and allowed only 83 yards in the first half. The Bucs were robbed of a defensive touchdown in the second quarter when McAllister was ruled down on forward progress.Safety Dexter Jackson led the Bucs with seven tackles.

New Orleans Saints

QB: Aaron Brooks needed a big rebound game to keep the Saints in the race for the South division and got it.Early in the game, he couldnt find any open receivers and was continually forced to scramble and throw the ball away. The safety in the first quarter was likely Brooks fault for not stepping up in the pocket correctly.Later, he make a great read in the red zone and avoided the blitz by completing his hot read for the first down.On the plays that Brooks had time, he was effective throwing the ball.Brooks left the game in the fourth quarter with his bruised shoulder and was replaced by Jake Delhomme.

WR: Joe Horn couldnt hang on to a pass late in the first quarter on a streak pattern on a perfect pass from Aaron Brooks.Horn had a long gain on a flea flicker play.He was also somehow wide open for a big gain on third and long in the third quarter and again on his touchdown catch. His nice day against this incredible defense solidifies his fantasy position as a must play.

Donte Stallworth was the target of some short patterns in the first half, but didnt have a chance to show his speed. He was also targeted in the second quarter on a streak pattern but never had a chance on the play.

Jerome Pathon had a deep ball thrown his way in the late second, but couldnt hang on when he was popped by safety Dexter Jackson.

Jake Reed had a short touchdown catch in the second quarter when he wrestled the ball away from the Bucs defenders. It was a terrific catch. He had another big catch on third down in the third quarter, making a nice adjustment. The depth of the WR core in New Orleans may be hurting Stallworths ability to sustain solid fantasy numbers.

RB: Deuce McAllister started the game despite his sore ankle.Coach Haslett called his number on a 3rd and 5 draw play and he produced the first early in the game. The Saints ran a number of direct snap plays for Deuce to try to get something going against the stingy Bucs defense. His touchdown run in the second quarter was a great effort to break a tackle and punch the ball in.Deuce limped off the field after his first carry in the second half but returned shortly. He managed a good game against a tough defense, but it is clear that he played at less than 100%.Keep an eye out.

TE: Neither David Sloan nor Boo Williams were involved in the Saints game plan in a meaningful way.

K: John Carney missed a 48-yard attempt early in the game but later made a 48-yard kick in the fourth quarter to put the Saints up 11 at the time.

Special Teams: The Saints special teams forced a big fumble on a kickoff in the third quarter, but the Bucs forced a fumble on the next play. Michael Lewis continues looking great returning kicks, and had a 66-yard return in the third quarter. The Saints special teams unit provides a big advantage.

Saints Pass Defense:The Saints sacked Johnson on the first series forcing a fumble and a turnover. The Saints defense played good coverage defense, allowing the short patterns underneath and on the outside, but tightening down when needed. They pressured Johnson some in the first half and held the Bucs to only nine points in the first half.Throughout the second half, they continued to pressure Brad Johnson and forced his first interception since October.CB Dale Carter left the game in the second quarter with a left shoulder strain, returned later, and then left permanently in the fourth quarter.

Saints Rush Defense:Pittman and Alstott couldnt get going in this game as the Saints dominated the line of scrimmage. The Bucs were held to only 34 yards on the ground as they were forced to the air.CB Ken Irvin led the Saints with seven tackles.

Carolina 13 at Cleveland 6

What You Need To Know

Carolina Panthers:

RB Dee Brown used this opportunity to play to the fullest since Lamar Smith was given paid leave for a DUI and did not play. Brown had 27 carries for 122 yards using his speed and agility to pick up yardage. The Panthers have few other options so if you need a RB that at least you know will get the carries, Brown could be worth a shot.

WR Muhsin Muhammad was targeted 11 times but only came out with 4 catches for 49 yards.

TE Wesley Walls finished with 1 catch for a 24-yard TD but still has very little affect on the offense.

Cleveland Browns:

RB William Green had another solid game with 24 carries for 94 yards and 3 catches for 44 yards. Green showed better power in picking up the tougher yards but doesnt break many tackles to get long gains.

WR Kevin Johnson was the only WR to catch a pass for the Browns as he had 5 catches for 57 yards.

QB Tim Couch struggled as he was heavily pressured throughout the game and the receivers were well covered. Couch made a few bad throws that led to INTs. Couch finished 12 of 27 for 130 yards and 3 INTs.

What You Ought To Know

Carolina Panthers

QB: Rodney Peete - couldnt sustain drives long enough to get decent stats and Carolina had the

running game going well. Peete went 8 of 17 for 89 yards with a TD and an INT.He looked as shaky as his numbers.

Randy Fasani - was placed into the game at random moments but mainly as a running threat but did little with his time.

RB: Dee Brown - had an excellent game with 122 yards rushing on 27 carries. Brown was nearly the entire offense for Carolina. Brown has good speed and some moves to pick up yardage. The Panthers have few other options so if you need a RB, at least you know Brown will get the carries.

Brown threw an INT on a HB pass play.

WR: Muhsin Muhammad - was the main target getting 11 targets but only 4 catches for 49 yards. Muhammad was overthrown by the running back going deep on a play that would have gained him some more yardage.

Steve Smith - did very little getting only 1 target for 3 yards.

TE: Wesley Walls - had only 1 catch for a 24-yard TD pass from Peete.Even with the TD, Walls clearly isnt the same TE as in the past and is not a big part of the offense.

Run Defense: Allowed William Green 94 yards rushing. Carolina over pursued much of the game and allowed a 34-yard end around by Dennis Northcutt.

Pass Defense: was hitting Tim Couch on nearly every pass and came out with 3 INTs. Emmanuel McDaniel came out with 2 interceptions and covered his receiver well the entire game.

Cleveland Browns

QB: Tim Couch - had a rough day being pressured on almost every pass play and the receivers were being covered well. Couch went 12 of 27 for 130 yards and 3 INTs. Couch made some very poor decisions that led to the interceptions.

RB: William Green - played well getting 94 yards on 24 carries. Green also aided the passing game with 3 catches for 44 yards. Green showed some better power but lacks speed and moves to break for long runs. Green left the game for a few plays with a player kicking his knee on a tackle but continued with no problems.

Jamel White - had only 1 run for 7 yards and 2 catches for 11 yards while playing.

WR: Kevin Johnson - was the go to guy for this week for Couch as the only WR to get a catch in this game. Johnson came out with 5 catches for 57 yards. Johnson was well covered during the game and had some throws to him that should not have been thrown.

Dennis Northcutt - had a 34-yard run on an end around. Northcutt left the game with a sprained knee and left the stadium with crutches.

TE: Steve Heiden - had 2 catches for 18 yards but seems to only get throws when very open.

Run Defense: was horrible as they allowed Dee Brown 122 yards rushing. They did a good job on stopping Randy Fasani during his plays.

Pass Defense: did a decent job but without being able to stop the run, very little happened in the air against this defense.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Atlanta Falcons

QB Michael Vick had a sub par day passing (just 11-for-28, 173 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT), but his 173 rushing yards and 2 TDs contributed to one of the strongest QB fantasy performances of the season. With Warrick Dunn injured and T.J. Duckett ineffective, Vick became the featured runner in the second half. His TDs were a 28-yard run around left end (out of the Power-I formation) late in the third quarter, and an amazing 46-yard TD run to win the game in OT that will make all the highlight reels.

RB Warrick Dunn left the game early in the 2nd quarter with a sprained ankle, and did not return.

RB T.J. Duckett was ineffective in relief, with just 37 yards on 11 carries, with half his yards coming on one play.

WR Brian Finneran was the go-to receiver today, racking up 5 catches for 114 yards and a TD, on 11 targets. He also got knocked out of bounds inside the 1 on a 39-yard pass play.

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings nearly won the game at the end of regulation. On 3rd and goal from the Atlanta 6, QB Daunte Culpepper handed off to WR Randy Moss out of the shotgun.Moss ran right, then threw a pass back across the field to Culpepper for an apparent touchdown. The play was nullified because of an illegal formation penalty Mosss motion before the snap left LT Bryant McKinnie uncovered on the line of scrimmage.Based on how the rest of the team was lined up, it appeared a tight end should have been left of McKinnie, but was actually lined up right of the right tackle.

RB Michael Bennett gained 61 of his 86 yards in the second half, and scored a 1-yard touchdown. His two goal line carries are significant, as Moe Williams and Daunte Culpepper have done the bulk of the goal line running this season.

WR Randy Moss did everything but score. He had 9 receptions for 134 yards, with about half of his catches coming across the middle.Moss was targeted 18 times on 45 attempted pass plays (plus one nullified pass attempt), putting the 40% Randy Ratio back in effect.

The Vikings special teams had a field goal blocked for the second straight week. They also had a punt partially blocked, resulting in great field position to set up Atlantas first touchdown.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Atlanta Falcons

QB:Michael Vick had a sub par day passing (just 11-for-28, 173 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT), but his 173 rushing yards and 2 TDs contributed to one of the strongest QB fantasy performances of the season.

RB:Warrick Dunn left the game with a sprained ankle in the 2nd quarter, and did not return. He had just 5 carries for 14 yards before the injury.

T.J. Duckett was ineffective in relief of Dunn, with 37 yards on 11 carries.18 of his 37 yards came on one play.He did not catch a pass.

Bob Christian scored a 1-yard TD in a 4-TE formation. He had two other carries on the day for a grand total of 3 yards.

WR:Brian Finneran was the go-to receiver today, racking up 5 catches for 114 yards and a TD, on 11 targets. He also got knocked out of bounds inside the 1 on a 39-yard pass play.Vick usually looked for him on deep routes.

Trevor Gaylor was the only other Atlanta WR to catch a pass 1 catch for 10 yards, on 2 targets.

Shawn Jefferson failed to catch a pass, but was thrown to six times. The incomplete passes his way were usually the result of inaccurate throws by Vick.

TE: Alge Crumpler caught 3 passes for 36 yards (4 targets), but was used primarily as a blocker. Two of his catches were on back-to-back plays late in the second quarter, setting up the TD pass to Finneran.

Reggie Kelly caught two passes for 13 yards, but was not targeted in the red zone, and was invisible most of the day.

Pass Defense: The pass rush was ferocious, sacking Culpepper five times, and forcing hurries on at least half of the passing plays. The pass rush also contributed to three interceptions (CB Ray Buchanan, CB Juran Bolden, S Keion Carpenter).Buchanan left the game with a minor injury in the second quarter, but played in the fourth quarter and OT.

Rush Defense: Gave up a couple of long runs to Michael Bennett in the second half, but stopped the run effectively in the first half, and did a great job in the red zone all day.

Special Teams: Two blocked kicks were a big factor in the victory.A partially blocked punt early in the second quarter set up their first touchdown.LB Keith Brooking blocked a field goal early n the fourth quarter with the game tied 21-21.

Minnesota Vikings

QB:Daunte Culpepper maintained his league lead in interceptions thrown, adding three to bring his season total to 19.The fierce Atlanta pass rush prevented him from getting comfortable in the pocket, though he did make a few good throws on the run.He finished with 266 passing yards and 1 TD, adding 35 rushing yards (mostly on scrambles), and a QB sneak on 4th and goal for a TD. He caught a TD thrown by Randy Moss on a slick play that was nullified by penalty.

RB:Michael Bennett gained 61 of his 86 yards in the second half, and scored a 1-yard touchdown. His two goal line carries are significant, as Moe Williams and Daunte Culpepper have done the bulk of the goal line running this season. He played more in shotgun sets today than in earlier weeks.

Moe Williams saw limited duty while nursing a sore heel.He had just 3 rushing yards on five carries, and was stuffed inside the five yard line three times.Williams saw the field in some shotgun sets, but did not catch a pass.

WR:Randy Moss did everything but score. He had 9 receptions for 134 yards, with about half of his catches coming across the middle.Moss was targeted 18 times on 45 attempted pass plays (plus one nullified pass attempt), putting the 40% Randy Ratio back in effect. He also had a slick TD pass to Culpepper called back on an illegal formation penalty a play that would have given the Vikings the win in regulation.Moss was called for two offensive pass interference penalties, both on push-offs that go uncalled most weeks.

DWayne Bates established himself as the #2 wideout, pulling down five catches for 70 yards (9 targets). His two highlights were a 30-yard catch to set up Minnesotas first touchdown, and a great block sealing off the outside to break Bennett free for a 28-yard run, setting up another TD.

Kelly Campbell left the game in the third quarter after suffering an injury while covering a kickoff. He did not catch a pass on four targets, and two passes intended for him were intercepted.

Chris Walsh caught two passes for 17 yards after entering the game to replace Campbell. Most of his playing time was on special teams.

TE: Jim Kleinsasser caught three passes for 30 yards, two on rollouts designed to get him the ball.Atlantas fierce pass rush, plus lineup shuffling on the offensive line caused him to be used as a blocker much of the day.

Bryon Chamberlain caught just one pass for seven yards, the only pass thrown to him all day.

Hunter Goodwin caught one pass, a 2-yard TD on a play-action pass at the goal line.He was left wide open, and pulled in just his third reception of the season.

Pass Defense: had a good game statistically, but were bailed out by a few bad throws by Vick to open receivers. The Vikings committed to rushing five men in every passing situation, attacking Vicks blind side to generate two sacks, but let Vick escape on the game-winning play in OT.

Rush Defense: bottled up the Atlanta running backs, but yielded the highest NFL QB rushing total in 30 years.

Special Teams: Had two critical mistakes a partially blocked punt set up Atlantas first TD, and a blocked field goal in the 4th quarter with the score tied. Both were the result of blown blocking assignments.

Seattle 24 at San Francisco 31

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Seattle Seahawks:

Matt Hasselbeck looked sharp for the second week in a row. 427 yards passing cant look bad. He hit on several throws that most would have guessed that he didnt have the ability to complete. Definitely seems to be gaining confidence.

The Seattle defense still has the worst front seven in all the NFL. If you have a RB playing against Seattle odds are you can count on double their average rushing yards for the week.

Darrell Jackson appears to have returned to full speed from his nasty concussion. He and Koren Robinson are becoming a formidable duo and Bobby Engram is a great compliment as the third WR.

Shawn Alexander did have a TD called back due to a holding penalty, but otherwise had a lackluster day running the ball.He did pick up tons of receiving yards during the 4th quarter when San Francisco went to the prevent defense.

San Francisco 49ers:

Jeff Garcia was off target for most of the day. Garcias two interceptions were badly thrown balls and he was not pressured in the pocket on either occurrence.

Garrison Hearst was this weeks recipient of the generosity of the Seattle run defense. Hearst did score 3 TDs, and averaged 4 yards per carry. The good news is he had 31 carries.

The San Francisco defense appeared to take it easy this week. They did get several turnovers, but Seattle moved the ball very well against them the entire game (507 yards), especially during the 4th quarter when they went into prevent mode. Seattle got within seven and recovered an onside kick, but a poorly thrown Hasselbeck pass saved the day.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Seattle Seahawks:

QB: Matt Hasselbeck: 30-55-427 (3 TD, 2 INT) 2-8 rushing yards. Hasselbeck set several personal records for the second week in a row. He is starting to believe in himself and is looking like a starting NFL QB. The two interceptions were costly, but coach Holmgren is obviously feeling better about the possibility of Hasselbeck being his starter next year. Hasselbeck was particularly accurate in this game and could have had even better numbers if it werent for several drops.

RB: Shawn Alexander: 16-74 yards rushing, 8-77 yards receiving (8 targets). Alexander ran hard on most attempts today, but also had a few carries where he danced behind the line looking for the big play. His receiving numbers were padded during the fourth quarter (5 catches) when Seattle was playing from far behind. Alexanders longest carry of the day was 20 yards on the last play of the first half when San Francisco dropped way back in coverage. Alexander also had a nice 16 yard TD run that was called back by a mysterious holding call. After watching the replay the referee must have called out the wrong number.

Maurice Morris: Morris had the first carry on the second Seattle series then went back to the bench. No explanation was given or found. Morris is attempting to return from injury and may be worked into the offense in weeks to come. For Alexander owners this warrants close attention.

WR: Koren Robinson: 4-95 (TD) yards receiving (12 targets). Robinson was targeted down field most of the day. He made several athletic grabs, but also had two drops when hit in the hands. He made a nice catch deep down the sideline that was called back by penalty.

Darrel Jackson: 7-114 (2 TD) yards receiving (16 targets). Jackson returned to #1 WR status this week for Seattle. He was targeted consistently through the game and made several good moves in space to rack up yards after the catch. Jackson lost a fumble at the SF 5 yard line. SF took the ball and marched down the field for another TD. This was huge momentum swing play. Jackson started to lose his cool late in the game. He was nailed with a taunting penalty after a TD and could have easily got another 15 yard penalty when he threw his helmet.

Bobby Engram: 6-72 yards receiving (9 targets). Engram was more than just a third down converter today. He was part of the offensefrom the first series. Holmgren appears to be choosing the go with 3 WR sets and going without a fullback more often.

TE: Itula Mili: 3-40 yards receiving (4 targets).

Jeremy Stevens: 2-29 yards receiving (2 targets).

Even though Stevens appears to be healthy Mili continues to see the field. If Holmgren plans to find out what he has for the future we should be seeing more of Stevens (particularly in the redzone) and less of Mili.

Pass Defense: Seattle was unable to put pressure on Garcia, but a two terribly thrown balls resulted in interceptions. Ken Lucas made a great diving catch on one interception. Shawn Springs wins round two of what will likely be several great matchups with Terrell Owens to come.

Rush Defense: Another week, another big day by an opponents RB. Nothing new here. On a positive note for Seattle they did hold Hearst to an average of only 4.0 yards per carry as opposed to the 5 and 6 yard clip they have been giving up.

Special Teams: Jeff Feagles continues to pin teams deep with his punting, but this week they forgot to tackle the return man as they were burned for a long TD.

San Francisco 49ers:

QB: Jeff Garcia: 16-29-164 yards passing (2 INT). Garcia was out of synch through most of the game. Garcia did convert some important third downs and ran for a 13 yards when they really needed it to keep drives moving. The two interceptions Garcia threw were on their first two drives. Both balls were overthrown badly.

RB: Garrison Hearst: 31-124 yards rushing (3 TD), 2-28 yards receiving (5 targets). Hearst had a big day, but it could have been bigger. He gained 31, 11, and 10 on his three longest carries, but couldnt seem to break away to pick up the big gainers that other RBs have been torching Seattle with.

Kevan Barlow: Kevan Barlow was out this week and likely two more weeks.

WR: Terrell Owens: 5-45 yards receiving (10 targets), 1-4 yards rushing on a reverse. Shawn Springs did a nice job on Owens when targeted down field. San Francisco did try to get Owens involved even though they could have pounded Hearst more, but he and Garcia couldnt hook up.

Tai Streets: 6-66 yards receiving (7 targets). Streets has passed up Stokes as the #2 WR. There can be no doubt of this now. The targets tell the story.

JJ Stokes: 1-20 yards receiving (3 targets). Stokes was open in the back of the endzone on one of his targets but Garcia overthrew him by a mile.

TE: Eric Johnson: 0-0 yards receiving (2 targets).

Justin Swift: 0-0 yards receiving (0 targets).

Swift was not targeted in the game. He may not even seen the field now that Johnson has returned from injury.

Pass Defense: 427 yards passing by Hasselbeck and no sacks. Hasselbeck was hurried now and then, but the pass rush was almost nonexistent. They did get two interceptions, but the last one on the last Seattle drive was gift on terribly thrown ball by Hasselbeck.

Rush Defense: San Francisco was able to keep Shawn Alexander bottled up for the bulk of the game. If you discount the 20 yard carry that they gave to him at the end of the first half Alexander was held to about 3 yards per carry.

Special Teams: Punt returner Jimmy Williams may have saved the day with his punt return for a TD, but at the time it just looked like the beginning of a blowout. Chandler made his only FG attempt in the game.

Arizona 0 at Kansas City 49

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Arizona Cardinals:

The Cardinals offense is absolutely atrocious. They lost #1 WR Frank Sanders on the second series of the game and also lost starting lineman Pete Kendall. If you have a defensive unit playing the Cardinals in the upcoming weeks you should seriously consider playing them. They finally appear to have given up.

The numbers for poor Jake Plummer were absolutely atrocious. He completed only 14 of 31 passes and had 3 interceptions for a 12.6 passing rating. He did make some poor choices like throwing 5 yard passes on 3rd and 9 and 1 yard passes on 3rd and 7.However, he lost his top wide receiver Frank Sanders on the second series of the game to a sprained ankle and had to deal with rookie receivers and also had 6 dropped passes.

RB Marcel Shipp had a couple nice runs and a reception on the first series of the game but then did virtually nothing the rest of the day.He dropped 2 passes in the 2nd quarter when the game was still within reach. He finished with 63 total yards which include garbage time (which was all of the second half).

Frank Sanders left the game in the first quarter with an ankle sprain.

Jason McAddley was wide open on a 40 yard bomb and dropped the ball.He just missed a touchdown in the 2nd quarter when the throw was slightly behind him on a crossing pattern and had a reception called back on a holding penalty. If Frank Sanders misses significant time with his injury hed be the only wide receiver that knows the offense on the team.

Freddie Jones was active, catching 5 passes for 29 yards. With Sanders out of the lineup, he seemed to be the receiver that Plummer was most comfortable with throwing to.

Kansas City Chiefs:

QB Trent Green looked like the old Kurt Warner throwing even more effectively than his 14 for 20, 209 yards and 2 touchdowns in 3 quarters would indicate. He also had an easy touchdown dropped by Eddie Kennison. The big rushing plays were draw plays that were set up by the offense stretching the field with the pass. Moreover, Green looks hungry, running downfield leading a block on a reverse in the 3rd quarter with the game well in hand.He was replaced the next series with a 42 point lead.

RB Priest Holmes owners were rewarded with his 169 yards of offense and 2 touchdowns.Whats amazing is that he left the game with over eight minutes left in the 3rd quarter. It was the smart football decision to take him out with the huge lead, but if he needed to, Holmes could have had 250 total yards and 4 touchdowns.

WR Eddie Kennison looks like he has become the go to receiver in this offense. He caught only 4 passes for 54 yards but dropped a easy 30 yard touchdown pass, drew a pass interference penalty near the goal line, and almost scored on a 31 yard reverse play.

TE Tony Gonzalez showed why he is a perennial All Pro tight end.His blocking freed many of Holmes outside runs and his ability to spread the middle of the field enables many of Holmes long screen passes and draw plays.Gonzalez also added 4 receptions for 74 yards and had a touchdown.

TE: Freddie Jones was active, catching 5 passes for 29 yards. With Sanders out of the lineup, he seemed to be the receiver that Plummer was most comfortable throwing to.

The Cardinals went to a double tight end set using H-back Steve Bush as the other tight end but he caught only 1 pass for 0 yards.

Cardinal Pass Defense: They sacked Trent Green on the first series of the game but were offsides on the play. They appeared dazed and confused and could not stop the Chiefs passing offense.

Cardinal Rush Defense:What can you say about a unit that gives up 216 yards in rushing offense despite pulling their top running back and offensive linemen in the 3rd quarter?

Cardinal Special Teams: They gave up a 90 yard punt return which got Kansas Citys juices flowing. They then had a botched hold on a 33 yard field goal attempt after a 15 play drive which completely changed the tone of the game.

Kansas City Chiefs:

QB: Trent Green looked like the old Kurt Warner throwing even more effectively than his 14 for 20, 209 yards and 2 touchdowns in 3 quarters would indicate.

RB: Priest Holmes owners were rewarded with his 169 yards of offense and 2 touchdowns.Whats amazing is that he left the game with over eight minutes left in the 3rd quarter. It was the smart football decision to take him out with the huge lead, but if he needed to, Holmes could have had 250 total yards and 4 touchdowns.

Tony Richardson opened huge holes for Holmes and scored a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. The touchdown seemed to be a gift for his great blocking.

Mike Cloud showed why he is not the starting running back for the Chiefs picking up only 2.2 yards per carry on 9 attempts. The game was well in hand and Willie Roaf had already come out of the game, however Cloud showed no explosion, speed or power.

WR: Eddie Kennison looks like he has become the go to receiver in this offense. He caught only 4 passes for 54 yards but dropped a easy 30 yard touchdown pass, drew a pass interference penalty near the goal line, and almost scored on a 31 yard reverse play.

Johnny Morton caught only 2 passes for 18 yards but had 2 near misses at long receptions. Both passes were slightly overthrown but were off his hands. He also had a 15 yard run on an end around play.

Marc Boerigter had 2 touchdowns but both came with the game well out of reach.

TE: Tony Gonzalez showed why he is a perennial All Pro tight end. His blocking freed many of Holmes outside runs and his ability to spread the middle of the field enables many of Holmes long screen passes and draw plays.Gonzalez also added 4 receptions for 74 yards and had a touchdown.

Pass Defense: Despite holding a huge lead in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, this unit clearly played like they had something to prove. They surrendered only 133 passing yards. They had 4 sacks and 4 interceptions.

Rush Defense:This unit was unbelievable. They allowed just 26 rushing yards with a long run of 6 yards. If you take that run away, they averaged less than a yard and a half per attempt.

Special Teams:Dante Hall sprinted to a 90 yard touchdown on a punt return. He did fumble the first punt of the second half but likely no one but his special teams coach will remember.

Morton Andersen connected on all 7 extra point attempts.

Denver 27 at San Diego 30

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Denver Broncos

QB Steve Beuerlein had another poor outing. Bronco fans will be happy to see Brian Grieseback.

RB Clinton Portis had another really big game. With his combined power and speed, he has become a must start every week.Carried 23 of the 26 times the Broncos rushed the ball with RBs.

WR Ed McCaffrey had his biggest game of the year. The Chargers couldnt cover him on quick slant routes. If Beuerlein starts next week, look for more of the same.

Linebacker Al Wilson was a one man wrecking crew. He broke up plays like he was in the Chargers huddle.

San Diego Chargers

QB Drew Brees played well enough to win, but not well enough to be a good fantasy quarterback. Without Curtis Conway in the lineup, Brees is a very risky start.

This just in RB LaDainian Tomlinson is good. He had a huge day and proved he can carry the Charger offense on his back.

Linebacker Donnie Edwards had another dominating performance on his quest for the Pro Bowl.

After the performance of kickers Steve Christie and Wade Richey, dont be surprised if the Chargers start trying out replacements.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Denver Broncos:

QB: Steve Beuerlein completed 22 of 39 passes for 288 yards while throwing 1 touchdown. Beuerlein was under pressure all day and was sacked 4 times and threw 2 interceptions. He missed several open receivers throughout the day. He played poorly against a pass defense that has been very weak this year. His performance over the last two games should quiet the anti Brian Griese crowd. There is no QB controversy in Denver.

RB: Clinton Portis ran for 159 yards on 23 carries and scored 2 touchdowns. He had big holes to run through and gained yardage equally well up the middle and outside. He is clearly the feature back now. He had 23 of the 26 RB carries for the team and he stayed in for goal line carries. His combination of power and speed makes him a must start every week.

Olandis Gary had only 1 carry for a loss of 4 yards. He is no longer in the Denver plans.

Mike Anderson had 2 carries for 6 yards. His main function is blocking as a fullback but he does get a few carries as a change of pace back.

Reuben Droughns is the other fullback and caught 2 passes on the day for 26 yards and a touchdown. He is just too far down the food chain to be worth anything fantasy wise.

WR: Rod Smith had an off day gaining 36 yards on only 2 catches. Beuerlein was not able to connect on the deeper routes that make Smith such a threat.

Ed McCaffrey had his best game of the season catching 7 balls for 126 yards. The quick slants and crossing routes were within the capability of Beuerlein and McCaffrey became his go to guy on important downs. He took some big hits going over the middle and popped right back up.

Upgrade McCaffrey next week if Beuerlein is again at the helm.

Ashley Lelie had 1 catch for 4 yards. He was not part of the game plan.

TE: Dwayne Carswell caught 5 passes for 54 yards. Since Beuerlein could only throw the shorter control passes, Carswell became a primary target. His value plummets however with the return of Shannon Sharpe.

Pass Defense: The Bronco pass defense was not really tested in this game. With Conway out, the Chargers rarely threw down field. They focused on running the ball and short ball control type passes. Defensive tackle Chester McGlockton had the only sack, but there wasnt much pressure on Brees. They were able to hold the Chargers to 214 passing yards. They also committed a few costly penalties to keep Charger drives alive.

Rushing Defense: The Bronco rushing defense got ran over. Tomlinson ran for 220 yards on 37 carries and three touchdowns against them. They looked more like the Seahawk rushing defense than the Broncos. Linebacker Al Wilson led the charge with 15 solo tackles and 1 assist. He was a one man gang towards the end of the game and looked like he was the only Bronco defender with gas in the tank and fire in his eyes down the stretch. With the exception of Wilson, the Bronco defense lost the battle in the trenches and got schooled.

San Diego Chargers

QB: Drew Brees completed 27 of 41 passes for 217 yards. He did not throw for a touchdown, but he didnt turn the ball over either. With his favorite target Conway out again this week, Brees relied heavily on Tomlinson and stuck to mostly shorter ball control type passes. Without Conway in the lineup, Brees is not a worthy fantasy start.

RB: LaDainian Tomlinson was the workhorse again today. He gained 220 yards on 37 rushing attempts and another 51 yards on 11 receptions. He ran strong and showed great instincts. This kid is the real deal and he is the key to the Chargers offense.

Fred McCrary is the fullback who spends most of the day blocking for Tomlinson. He is used as a safety valve and on screen passes. He had 4 catches for 15 yards on the day.

WR: Curtis Conway was listed as out for the game with a bad shoulder. Drew Brees and the whole Chargers passing attack wish him a speedy recovery.

Reche Caldwell had 3 catches for 27 yards, but was the target of several other passes. He drew a pass interference call on the last drive to help move the chains. He also had a nice gainer called back on a penalty. He is learning the pro game quickly.

Tim Dwight had 1 catch for 18 yards. He is back to returning punts, but his role as a receiver seems to be getting smaller every week.

Eric Parker had 3 grabs for 48 yards. He is young and too far down the food chain to matter much, but he ran good routes, got open, and caught the ball. He got a lot of playing time in this game because he was one of only three active wide receivers on the Chargers roster today.

TE: Stephen Alexander had 3 catches for 40 yards. He was the target of several other passes as well. With Conway out, Alexander could be worth starting at tight end.

Josh Norman is the other Charger tight end. They often use two tight end formations and sometimes throw his way. Norman had 2 catches for 18 yards. Of the two, Alexander is the one to own.

Pass Defense: The Charger pass defense pressured Beuerlein well and sacked him 4 times. Linebacker Ben Leber, defensive end Marcellus Wiley, and defensive tackles Jamal Williams and Dequincy Scott had the 4 sacks. Williams left the game with a leg injury. Cornerbacks Quentin Jammer and Alex Molden covered the wide outs very well with the exception of Ed McCaffrey on slant patterns. Molden had one of the two interceptions. Linebacker Donnie Edwards had the other.

Rushing Defense: The Chargers rushing defense was not very good. They stopped Portis on some series and let him run freely on others. Linebacker Donnie Edwards led the Charger defense with 10 solo tackles and 2 assists. The Charger front 7 is not the iron curtain rushing defense that it used to be.

Special Teams: Steve Christie is doing his best to play himself out of a job. He converted only 3 of 6 tries; hooking two to the left and kicking the other low enough to be easily blocked. Wade Richey ( the kickoff specialist) also had a bad day. He had several short kickoffs and booted one out of bounds for a penalty.

Chicago 20 at Green Bay 30

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Chicago Bears:

RB Anthony Thomas started for Chicago, and the day looked promising after his first rush went for 26 yards. He broke the index finger on his right hand; however, and never returned.RB Leon Johnson received the bulk of the carries and was not very effective.

QB Jim Miller played through pain once again, and while his performance was to be admired, it was not enough. He cannot throw the deep ball, and most of the Bears passing routes were screen passes and little dumps.

MLB Brian Urlacher was held to his worst statistical defensive game of the year.He finished with just 1 solo tackle, and 6 assists.

Green Bay Packers

It took the whole first half, but QB Brett Favre finally snapped out of his funk. After a mediocre first half, he erupted for 2 touchdowns and over 175 yards in the second half.

RB Ahman Green left the game with a sprained left knee.Backup Tony Fisher filled in nicely, with 106 total yards and a touchdown. Green owners must have Fisher on their roster.

WR Donald Driver was targeted 12 times and seems to be very comfortable in the # 1 WR role. Terry Glenn is still a factor, but Favre definitely favored Driver Sunday.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Chicago Bears:

QB:Jim Miller played through pain once again, but was limited to just 191 yards passing and 1 touchdown. He still cannot throw deep, and while this did not hurt Chicago at first, it became noticeable once Green Bay took the lead. This tendonitis is taking an effect on the whole Chicago offense. Gutsy effort and took another pain shot to play.

Henry Burris threw his first NFL touchdown, a 45 yard strike to Marcus Robinson very late in the game.

RB:Anthony Thomas began the game with promise, a 26 yard spurt up the left side of the field. His day ended quickly, 3 carries later with a broke right index finger. He did not return, and his status for next week is unknown.

With Thomas out, RB Leon Johnson got his chance to show what he could do.He was not very productive, and had a costly fumble that got the ball rolling for Green Bay.Coach Jauron has already said that they would use Johnson as a change of pace back.

WR:Mary Booker finished with 6 catches for 52 yards (9 targets). He showed great speed on a 21-yard over the middle catch for a 1st down.He wont establish himself as a deep threat for the rest of the year with the way Jim Millers elbow is hurting him.He became the 1st Chicago receiver to reach 1,000 yards in back to back seasons since Curtis Conway, proving that his breakout year last year was not a fluke. He will continue to be a great fantasy receiver, especially if Chicago drafts Carson Palmer or Byron Leftwich. Caught what looked to be a TD but the play was ruled incomplete.Chicago challenged and lost the challenge.

Dez White finished with 5 catches for 39 yards, but did have 9 targets. He also committed a costly fumble.

Marcus Robinson was nowhere to be found until the last desperation touchdown.

TE:Dustin Lyman was the playmaker for Chicago. He totaled 58 yards on 7 receptions and 2 touchdowns, one from punter Brian Maynard. He is a converted linebacker out of Wake Forest and may just be coming into his new role.Keep an eye on him. When John Davis was healthy, Davis scored in three straight games for Chicago so theyre not afraid to use the TE.

Rush Defense:The Bears did a good job of holding down Ahman Green, but they could not stop Tony Fisher in the second half.Theyve been having problems with the power backs as of late, and it was Fishers bull rushing that controlled the game.

Pass Defense:You can only keep Brett Favre down for so long, as Chicago learned in the second half.Cornerback Jerry Azumah played a great game, and made 2 touchdown saving deflections that would have been Donald Driver scores.Their failure to cover Bubba Franks in the red zone is inexcusable.

Special Teams:Chicago scored their first touchdown on a fake field goal, which was a pass from the holder Brad Maynard to TE Dustin Lyman. It was a very windy day, so K Paul Edinger did not attempt a 47 yard field goal, and he missed a 52 yarder way to the left.Edinger did have the best tackle of the day, that probably saved a kickoff return touchdown.

Green Bay Packers

QB:Brett Favre started slow, but came alive in the second half, including 2 touchdown passes in the red zone.He had a clear shot for a touchdown to FB William Henderson, but waited and found Franks for the six.Favre always plays well against Chicago, especially in Lambeau.

RB:Ahman Green left with a sprained left knee, but not before amassing 123 total yards. He suffered the injury on a nice 29 yard run.The screen play was effective as well, as he caught 5 balls for 45 yards.

Tony Fisher ran hard in place of Green, finishing with 91 yards and a touchdown on just 17 carries (5.4 ypc.)Late in the game, Green Bay ran it with him three straight times inside the 5 yard line.He was effective in the trenches, and theres a good chance that Ahman Green may be replaced in goal line situations in the future.

WR:Donnie Driver had a so-so performance, finishing with 65 yards, but missing the end zone.He was double-covered all day, and finished with 12 targets. His 42 yard reception was the result of very poor tackling by Chicago

Terry Glenn did not catch a pass until the second half, but made the most of both of his receptions. One was a third down conversion, and the other was a nifty 23 yard over the shoulder catch where he was injured. He returned, however.

TE:Bubba Franks was targeted six times, and was looked to in the red zone.Favre waived off an easy touchdown pass to William Henderson for an even easier one to Franks. He caught all 6 balls thrown to him.Drops were a concern for him coming out of college.

Rush Defense:Playing without Gilbert Brown, the Packers found away to keep Chicagos ground game from producing big numbers, limiting them to just 74 yards. With Thomas out, their primary goal was to strip the ball out of Leon Johnsons hands, which they succeeded at once.

Pass Defense:Tyrone Williams had a spectacular game, finishing with 7 total tackles, 1 INT, and 1 fumble recovery. The Green Bay secondary blanketed the Bear receivers all day, and were willing to give up the short gains.

Special Teams:While they did have the breakdown that led to the score on the fake field goal, the special teams unit played well the rest of the game.Longwell was limited to just 2 field goal attempts due to the strong wind.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Houston Texans

Costly mistakes cost the Texans any chance of beating a Colts team that was not playing well. After going nowhere on the first series, Houston fumbled the next two times it touched the ball. Houston was 2-for-15 on third-down conversions.Houston's only points came when Kris Brown made a 34-yard field goal with 3:51 to go after Troy Walters fumbled a punt at the Indianapolis 21.

After RB Jonathan Wells fumbled early in the game, he was replaced by a very productive James Allen.Allen had 113 of the Texans 165 Offensive yards on the day.

Indianapolis:

The Indianapolis Offense was out of sync, and struggled during the game. Both of the Colts scoring plays in the first quarter came off of Texan fumbles. The Colts finished with only 267 yards in offense. The star of this game was the Colts Defense, which allowed 165 total yards.

RB Edgerrin James carried 20 times for just 65 yards and sat out the final few series after irritating his injured right ankle. Whether its injury or recovery from last years injury, hes clearly not the James of old.

WR Marvin Harrison was his usual excellent self.

Texans Rush Defense Bell had the only forced fumble of the day against Wells.Held the Colts rushing attack to 88 total yards on the ground.Stopped James twice on 3rd and short plays.

Indianapolis Colts

QB: Payton Manning 15 of 28 for 190 yards and a TD.3 Carries for 2 net yards.Mannings low statistics are far more a result of sloppy play from his WRs than the Texans Defense.Ismail, had 2 early drops, and Wayne dropped another easy catch. The entire Colts offense was out of sync on the day.

RB: Edge James 20 Carries for 65 yards.Started the game but is still not running with the authority he once did.Stopped twice on 3rd and short by the Texans Defense.Came out of the game injured and was replaced by Mungro.

James Mungro-4 Carries for 13 yards and a TD.Run for a 2 point conversion failed.Came in for an injured James, but left injured himself (Ankle), and was replaced for the final two series by Ricky Williams.

Ricky Williams-5 Carries for 12 yards.Played the final 2 series after Mungro went out with an ankle injury.

WR: Marvin Harrison-9 Receptions for 101 yards.Typical Harrison game, bright spot in a struggling Colts Offense.

Qadry Ismail 1 Reception for 26 yards.Dropped two Manning Passes early in the game.Manning seemed to lose confidence in Ismail, and did not return to him as a focal point.

Reggie Wayne -3 Receptions for 43 yards.Picked up a much needed 1st on an inside slant on 3rd down.Dropped a catchable pass from Manning early in the game.

TE: Marcus Pollard .1 Reception for 16 yards and a TD.

Colts Pass Defense Dwight Freeney and Josh Williams each sacked Carr.Held Carr to 137 passing yards.Entirely shut out the Texans passing game until 12:20 in the 3rd quarter when Carr completed his first pass.

Colts Rush DefenseHeld the Texans to 65 total rushing yards.Completely stopped Wells on the first drive, forcing a fumble for the turnover.Indianapolis swarmed to the ball and created all kinds of confusion for Houston

KO/P Returner-Troy Walters-Fumbled 3 Return attempts, and mishandled another 2 attempts, but only lost one of them.

New York Jets 20 at Oakland 26

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

New York Jets:

QB Chad Pennington played well despite facing a tough Oakland pass rush. He threw two scoring passes, one to Chrebet and one to fullback Jerald Sowell (pronounced "soul"). He missed an open Santana Moss for a score in the first half. He finished with 265 passing yards and one interception on a desperation pass at the end of the game.

RB Curtis Martin was shut down by the Oakland defensive front. He ran for only 26 yards on 11 carries and added 2 catches for 11 yards. On the Jets' second series of the game it looked like Martin might settle into a good rushing groove when he gained 12 yards on 2 carries but the rushing room disappeared soon after.

WR Santana Moss suffered a sprained ankle on a punt return at the end of the 1st half and did not return. Keep an eye on this injury because if he misses significant time the numbers for the other receivers will increase.

WR Laveranues Coles had huge yardage game with 10 catches for 158 yards. He did not score, though. When Moss got injured the passing game fell on the shoulders of Coles and Chrebet with Coles getting most of the looks and catches.

Oakland Raiders:

QB Rich Gannon continued to carry the load for fantasy owners across the country. He broke the 300-yard barrier again with 342 passing yards and he added a scoring toss to Jerry Rice.

WR Tim Brown needed 4 catches to get to 1000 for his career. He got 3 of them in the first half and added 5 more in the second. He finished with 90 yards but no scores.

WR Jerry Rice had the only scoring catch for the Raiders. He finished with 4 catches for 66 yards.

RB Charlie Garner led the Raiders with 9 catches for 60 yards. He was as active in the passing game as he was in the rushing game. He had 12 carries for 52 yards. That made for a decent rushing/receiving total but he didn't get in the end zone.

The two-headed, short-yardage monster of Crockett and Wheatley combined for 8 carries and 18 yards. Crockett got the 1-yard score. If you're in the unfortunate position of relying on one of them as a starter, this game did not clear the picture up for you at all. hr>
WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

New York Jets

QB: Chad Pennington held up well in the violent environs of the Oakland Coliseum. He completed almost 65% of his passes to 6 different receivers. He was without deep threat receiver Santana Moss for the whole second half but made up the difference with Coles and Chrebet. The confidence Pennington has in Coles was obvious from the beginning where Pennington would throw a pass to a spot and just know that Coles would be there. The TD pass to Sowell came from play action and the score to Chrebet also came in the red zone. He did overthrow a wide-open Moss for a sure score in the first half but that was one of very few miscues for Pennington in this game.

RB: Curtis Martin just could not get on track in this game. He had one or two positive runs early but couldn't get anything going after that. He finished with 11 carries for 26 yards and he also caught 2 passes for 11 more. One negative note, on the 1-yard TD pass, the play-action fake went to Jordan. Martin was on the sideline with the Jets at the Raider 1.

Lamont Jordan was really a non-factor in the game. He had 1 carry for no gain and 3 catches for 24 yards. He was in on the goal line package that resulted in a 1-yards TD pass to Sowell.

WR: Laveranues Coles had a big game with 10 catches for 158 yards. He did not score. He is definitely the preferred target of Chad Pennington and the two have terrific chemistry on the football field. His numbers got a nice bump when Santana Moss left the game at halftime with a sprained ankle.

Wayne Chrebet's numbers also got a boost when Moss didn't play the 2nd half. He finished with 5 catches for 66 yards, including a 13-yard score. He caught balls across the middle and down the sides, sacrificing his body when necessary. He's tough little receiver and a big part of the Jets' passing game. If Moss misses any time with is ankle injury look for Chrebet's numbers to increase.

Santana Moss sprained his ankle late in the 1st half on a punt return and did not get back into the game. Should Moss miss any significant time the other receivers' numbers will increase.

TE: Anthony Becht didn't catch a pass.

NYJ Pass Defense: They sat in a matchup zone all night and Rich Gannon picked them apart for 342 yards. The zone prevented the Raiders from completing any passes downfield but it left the shorter routes open. The Jets did sack Gannon three times.

NYJ Rush Defense: The defensive front of the Jets did a good job keeping Charlie Garner to limited gains. They also had a nice goal line stand in the first half and held the Raiders to a FG.

/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**/**

Oakland Raiders

QB: Rich Gannon continued to pile up yards as he has against every other team this year. He didn't have a completion for more than 26 yards but still finished with 342 passing yards. He picked apart the Jets matchup zone with short passes and marched the Raiders up and down the field. The offense sputtered a bit in the red zone and settled for more FG than TD scoring opportunities.

RB: Charlie Garner was held to just 52 rushing yards on 12 carries. He was active in the passing game and led the team with 9 catches for an additional 60 yards. He didn't break his customary long run and had to settle for smaller gains. He was pulled on the goal line for Zack Crockett and was bumped in short yardage formations by Ty Wheatley.

Zack Crockett got the goal line carries in the game and scored from 1 yard out in the 3rd quarter.

Ty Wheatley had 6 carries for 15 yards.

WR: Tim Brown surpassed the 1000 catch mark for his career in this game. He finished with 8 catches for 90 yards. After a few weeks of being the forgotten man in the Raider receiver corps Brown came back big this week. Gannon said that the 1000-catch mark wouldn't influence whom he threw the ball to but it was obvious to see that he was looking at Brown early and often in this game. We'll see how the catches shake out in the coming weeks.

Jerry Rice got the scoring catch on a skinny post route from the 26-yard line. He got inside position on the defender and split the zone for the score. You keep hearing that he'll have to retire some day but he's playing at such a high level that that day seems very far off.

Jerry Porter suffered from Gannon focusing on Brown's record. He had two catches in the Raiders' first two possessions and didn't have another catch in the game. He's still the future of the Oakland passing game but Monday night was about Tim Brown and the history of the Raider passing game.

TE: Roland Williams and Doug Jolley combined for 7 catches and 90 yards. Jolley, especially, looks like he's becoming a bigger part of the passing game. He has good hands and he's a big target for Gannon.

Oakland Pass Defense: This unit wasn't really tested after they stymied Martin and the Jets in the first half.

Dallas Rush Defense: Pennington was sacked three times but enjoyed decent time in the pocket for most of the game. Charles Woodson didn't look 100% healthy and the Jets exploited that with some success.
