Kansas City 40 at Cleveland 39

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Kansas City Chiefs:

Priest Holmes is good. Seriously, he could be the Marshall Faulk of the AFC. This offense clearly centers around him this season and he's proving he is up to the challenge. Was not pulled at the goal-line for Tony Richardson.

Tony Gonzalez picked up as dominant as he left off even without a preseason

The Kansas City secondary played absolutely dreadfully. They looked confused and were burned badly time after time. Definitely something to consider for future matchups.

Cleveland Browns:

Kelly Holcomb didn't look as good as his stats would indicate. He overthrew receivers several times and often failed to put the ball where the receiver could catch it in stride. His receivers were so wide open is was hard for him not to hit them. Perfect example of where the highlights can be a little misleading.

Jamal White outplayed William Green and looked explosive through the holes while Green looked slow and tentative.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Kansas City Chiefs

QB: Trent Green at times looked mediocre and at times looked impressive. He was not sacked. The highlight of the last play from scrimmage that you've probably all seen by now was the first time he was touched all day. His offensive line did an excellent job to protect him. He threw an interception on the first drive but came back on the next drive and went 4-4 for 75 yards including the touchdown to Tony Gonzalez. All in all, a productive day.

WR: Eddie Kennison had a huge day and looked to be playing hard, getting open, and getting a lot of long patterns that stretched the Cleveland defense. 4 receptions for 120 yards.

WR: Johnny Morton was invisible in the first half and wasn't even targeted for a pass until midway through the 3rd quarter. He caught one pass in the 3rd quarter and disappeared after that only being targeted one other time.

RB: Priest Holmes had a monster day. It is evident that he is the focal point of this offense. He showed explosiveness through the holes and had a number of runs to the outside where he beat the linebackers and turned the quarter for big gains. He showed no signs of slowing due to the heat. As the game went on he got stronger. He had 77 yards rushing in the 4th quarter. The Kansas City offensive line played sporadically, giving him decent holes on some series but not much room to run on others. They also shot themselves in the foot with numerous penalties (including one that negated a 25 yard run by Holmes) but when the game was on the line they played well. He wasn't pulled near the goal line getting TD runs of 5 and 7 yards. He led the team in receptions (6) and is making his case to become the Marshall Faulk of the AFC.

Tony Richardson got some touches but it's clear Holmes is the focal point.

TE: If Tony Gonzalez had any ill-effects of his holdout, it sure didn't show up on the field. He looked dominant as ever getting 5 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. He appeared to be drawing double teams at times and yet still gave Green enough room to get him the ball.

Chiefs' pass defense: Was absolutely atrocious. Cleveland's wide receivers were so far open that it was sometimes difficult to tell which defensive backs were supposed to be covering them. They appeared confused on coverage and had many blown assignments. This group is not ready for the NFL. The pass rush was equally as weak. Kelly Holcomb threw many quick release passes but they put no pressure on him all game. The one play that they did sack him, lead to a fumble.

Chiefs' run defense: Did a good job of containing Green and White. The longest run from scrimmage was 9 yards. The Browns only ran the ball 20 times (compared to 39 passes).

Cleveland Browns

QB: Kelly Holcomb shook off some early bad throws and put together an impressive game from a fantasy standpoint. From a football standpoint, many of his throws were a little to a lot off target. He was rarely rushed or hurried and his wide receivers were wide open all day. When Tim Couch comes back there will be no quarterback controversy.

WR: An absolutely dominant day by the Cleveland wide outs. This group could not only put up some nice fantasy numbers but will make whoever is quarterbacking look good. Quincy Morgan was everywhere on the field and made big plays happen catching 9 balls for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kevin Johnson not only caught 8 passes for 96 yards but threw a 33 yard touchdown to a wide open Quincy Morgan.

Dennis Northcutt caught only one ball but made it count on a 43 yard touchdown reception. He was also wide open on another deep pass that Holcomb overthrew.

RB: The non-emergence of William Green overshadowed a productive day by Jamal White who started and played the majority of the time. Green only averaged 2.1 yards on 8 carries while White averaged 3.5 yards on his 12 touches. White also caught 3 passes for 20 yards and had a nice 34 yard reception on a screen pass called back on a clipping penalty.

TE: Mark Campbell caught 2 passes for 27 yards.

Browns pass defense: This wasn't as bad as the 40 point score would indicate but they clearly lost some of their edge at halftime. There was little or no pass rush to speak of and the secondary couldn't contain Gonzalez and Kennison for very long.

Browns rush defense: Obviously was not very good. It's difficult to say how much of that was Kansas City's dominant offensive line and how much is weakness from the line and line backers of the Browns. This group clearly ran out of gas in the 4th quarter and that is alarming in a home game. They showed no spark and Holmes ran like a man among boys.
