WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Indianapolis Colts:

WR Qadry Ismail is a huge addition to the Colt's offense. Was the key to the scripted out first drive with a few big receptions, and a TD. Caught 2 TDs with a 3rd TD possibility just off his fingers in the End Zone.

QB Peyton Manning looked to be in complete control of the offense once again and appeared as sharp as ever, especially early.

Defensive Tackle James Cannida sprained his right MCL, and was taken off in a cart.

TE Marcus Pollard left the game with a sprained left knee and Bruised left rib. Up until that point, the Colt's attack included many double TE sets, and it was used primarily in the Red Zone. The injury to Pollard forced the Colt's out of this set.

The Colt's Offense never missed a beat in the first half, not needing to punt until the 3rd quarter. The Colt's used the double TE set in a vast majority of plays in the first half and exclusively in the Red Zone, but came away from it after the injury to Pollard. If Pollard is out for an extended period, the Colt's Offense may not run as smoothly.

Jacksonville Jaguars:

Fred Taylor is back. He rushed 24 times for 83 yards, and Stacy Mack (4 carries) didn't cut into his plays. Taylor made all his normal cuts, and ran with power. Key to the rushing attack. The reports of Mack taking over in the Red Zone are greatly exaggerated as Taylor got all the carries inside the 10 and all but 1 inside the 20. Used as a receiver down field in the passing game, and caught two key 3rd down receptions to keep drives alive when the Jaguars were in an Empty Back field formation.

Jimmy Smith is showing no ill effects from the Hold Out. Brunell went to him play after play in the passing attack even though he was double teamed all game.

With the game on the line down by 3 in the final 2 minutes, Brunell went to Bobby Shaw on 4th and 4. Shaw was a big part of the game plan, and seems to have gained the total trust of Brunell. Brunell looked to Shaw on several other crucial downs.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Indianapolis Colts

QB: Payton Manning: Made his 56th consecutive start. Wore Ridell's new Concussion proof Helmet for the game. Was in command of the Offense, hitting WRs in stride, and picking the Jaguar Defense apart at will. Completed 70% of his passes through the 1st half. Fell off some in the second half after Pollard left the game, but still finished with 19 of 31 for 211 yards and 3 Touch Downs. Manning did not throw an Interception all game.

WR: Marvin Harrison: Started slow with two passes in and out of his hands on the first drive. Gained 16 yards on a key 3rd and 7 to keep the drive alive. Did not catch a reception in the 3rd quarter, but pulled in a 3 yard TD to start the 4th quarter. Drew double teams all day finishing with only 4 receptions for 34 yards and a TD.

Qadry Ismail: Was the primary weapon on the first drive as Harrison was double teamed. Brought in a big 34 yard reception, and capped the first drive off with a 6 yard TD reception standing uncovered in the End Zone. Although Ismail was a big part of the attack today, he didn't catch a pass after the first drive until the end of the 3rd quarter. Second TD of the day was caught standing all alone in the back of the End Zone. Had the ball in and out of his fingers in the End Zone for what would have been his 3rd TD. Finished the day with 6 for 84.

Reggie Wayne: Key 3rd down conversion over the middle to keep a drive alive. Huge 27 yard reception on the Colts first play of the second half. Those were his only two receptions of the game. Not looked to in the basic game plan.

RB: Edgerrin James: Started game and never looked back Was the only Colts Running Back with any carries. Looked like the James of old making cut after cut while picking and choosing his holes. Stopped on a dime, and ran back against the grain on a play that the Announcers pointed out was the exact same play and cut back that he was injured on last year. Finished with 26 carries for 99 yards rushing. Was looked to in the passing game, but only caught 2 receptions for 11. James would have walked into the end zone standing up for a TD on a pass in the flat that he bobbled in and out of his hands on 1st down from the 20. It was the second consecutive time in the drive that Manning went to James for a pass on 3rd down. Fumbled only once, but it was lost giving the ball to the Jags on the Colt's own 14. Lead to a Jaguar FG.

Detron Smith: The full back never touched the ball, but was a crushing lead blocker for James all day. Looked like a pro bowler.

TE: Marcus Pollard. Had 3 receptions for 34 yards, with 24 of those yards coming on a perfect play action pass from Manning. Fumbled the ball on the play he was injured on, but had the presence of mind to recover the fumble. Left the game with a sprained left knee and a bruised left rib.

Jermaine Wiggins: Non factor in as an injury replacement for Pollard. 1 reception for 9 yards.

Colts Pass Defense: Less pressure from a Dungy coached team than you would expect. Chad Bradtzke had the only sack of the game for the Colts. Marcus Washington had the only INT of the game for the Colts, but returned it 40 yards for a TD. Indianapolis played cover two Pass Defense on most plays from scrimmage. On short yardage plays, the Colts forced in the Corners.

Colts Rush Defense: Rotated about 7 linemen in and out of the game and in every position. When Dungy was asked about it at the half, he said it was part of his game plan to keep the D fresh this season.

Colts Special Teams: Mike Vanderjagt had a FG blocked. Hit 4 extra points. Return man Detron Smith (Also the new starting Full Back) gained 10 yards on the only returnable Jaguar Kick Off. Punter Hunter Smith kicked high booming kicks with a nicely placed 41 yarder to pin the Jaguars deep. The Colts could have almost put the game away as late in the 4th quarter, when a Hunter Smith punt landed right on top of a Jaguar player and rolled out of bounds at the Jag's 19. The scrambling Colts players just couldn't get to it, and it would have given the Colts 1st and 10 at the 19 late in the game. Holding call on the Colts negated a long KR, pinning the Colt's back inside their own 10. Vanderjagt was short on Kick Offs all day.

Jacksonville Jaguars

QB: Mark Brunell: 22 of 36 for 228 with 2 TDs and an INT. Calm and cool in the pocket with lots of time to throw. Showed great confidence in Smith and Shaw, looking to both in pressure situations. Picked off with 41 seconds left in the first half by Marcus Washington on a pass intended for Taylor. Jags went for it on 4th and 1 from the 8. Brunell dove for the first. Colts weren't expecting the QB sneak, and Brunell could have walked in for the TD standing up. Instead it was a 1st Down from the 6 that Taylor later scored on. Hail Mary to win the game with 3 seconds left failed.

WR: Jimmy Smith: Double covered the whole game, and still ended up with 8 receptions for 104 yards. Was physical as the primary point of attack in the passing game. Brunell showed great confidence in Smith, going to him in many high pressure situations. Triple covered in traffic for an 11 yard gain on 3rd and 2. Had a 14 yard reception brought back on a penalty, but came right back with an 18 yard catch on the next play. Took himself out in the Red Zone for a Breather on one drive. Caught a two point conversion.

Bobby Shaw was a key part of the passing attack, and Brunell showed great confidence in the new WR from Pittsburgh. 3 of his 5 receptions for 48 yards were much needed 3rd down drive sustaining receptions. Big 13 yard reception inside the Colt's 20 on a 3rd down play from an Empty Back Field formation.

Patrick Johnson is the 3rd WR and had a single catch for 18 yards for a TD. Was the target of the Coach's ire on the sideline after a Holding play by Johnson brought back a 9 yard Taylor run.

RB: Fred Taylor had a 9 yard run called back on Holding. Center of the attack, and when he was out, it was because he took himself out for a breather. Mack had several short yardage 3rd and 1 rushes, but contrary to reports that Mack would be the Goal line back, Taylor was in for the Red Zone plays. Split out at WR for a number of Empty Back field formations. Stopped on 3rd and 1 from the 10 leading to a FG. Looked like the Fred Taylor of old with no visual effects lingering from his injury last season. Finished with 24 for 83 and a TD. Caught 4 for 35. Walked into the End Zone standing up for his only TD.

Stacy Mack was in the game for quite a few plays but had only 4 touches for 16 yards. Missed a Hand off assignment on a key 3rd and 1 from the 20. Came in while Taylor took himself out for a breather, but was replaced by Taylor once again in the Red Zone. Not used in the Passing Game. 3 of his 4 carries were on short yardage 3rd and 1 situations.

TE: Pete Mitchell caught an 8 yard TD on 2nd and Goal out of an Empty Back field formation. Finished with 3 receptions for 22 yards.

Jaguar's Pass Defense couldn't get any real pressure on Manning, recording it's first and only sack at the end of the 3rd quarter. Marlon McCree almost picked off a tipped Manning pass for what would have been the 3rd consecutive turn over by the Colt's.

Jaguar's Rush Defense played well stopping James on a number of plays. Huge stop in the final 2 minutes forcing the Colts to punt and keeping the Jaguar chances alive.

Jaguar's Special Teams Haden Epstien had 2 XPs and a 34 yard FG. Was outstanding on Kick Offs with 4 touch backs. Missed a 52 yard attempt low and wide right. PR Damon Gibson fumbled his only attempt of the game giving the Colts the ball back at the 19 which lead to a TD. Caused a tirade from Coughlin on the sideline. Another Colt's punt dropped on a Jaguar defender and rolled out of bounds at the Jag 14 allowing them to dodge a bullet. Elvis Joseph was key to the Jag's field position with 5 KR for 71 yards. Marcus Stroud blocked a Field goal attempt.
