Arizona 24 at Seattle 13

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Arizona Cardinals:

As they did with Charlie Garner last week, the Seahawks allowed a big game to the RB. Thomas Jones' success was mostly due to a porous Seattle run defense. Jones was tentative in hitting the hole. Certainly, it was a huge day, but the defense definitely helped his game.

Jake Plummer was inaccurate and was uncomfortable in the pocket despite very little pressure from the Seattle pass rush for most of the game. However, he looked like a different player on a 13 play 90 yard drive to put the game away in the 4th quarter.

David Boston is the Arizona passing game. Shawn Springs held him to two catches for 24 yards (on 5 targets) through the first half. The reason he didn't get the ball more was that the Arizona coaching staff elected to simply ram the ball down the throat of the Seattle defense.

Seattle Seahawks:

Seattle couldn't finish several drives. Three trips inside the ten yard line resulted in a botched FG, a fumble, and a FG after a first down at the 3 yard line.

The Seattle passing game took gigantic steps forward with the addition of Trent Dilfer in the game. He was accurate and looked down field several times. The knee does not look like it bothered him at all.

The Seattle TE's were given 12 targets on the day. Itula Mili had a TD and Jeremy Stevens was targeted in the endzone 3 times.

The Seattle rush defense is terrible. Their defensive line was consistently blown off the ball and they tackled poorly as a team.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Arizona Cardinals

QB: Jake Plummer: 10-22-107 yards (1 TD, 1 INT). Plummer was unimpressive on the day. He was off target most of the game. In his defense, he appeared to play much better when the game was on the line in the 4th quarter.

RB: Thomas Jones: 24-173 yards (1 TD). Jones was targeted twice in the passing game (2-18 yards). Jones was the beneficiary of a dismal Seattle rush defense. He didn't hit the hole quickly and was running through gapping holes. Hard to down play 173 yards on the ground, but the Seattle defense is really that poor against the run.

WR: David Boston: 4-49 yards. Boston was targeted 9 times. Plummer tried to force several balls to Boston. Shawn Springs did a great job of holding him down.

Frank Sanders: 1-4 yards (1 TD). Sanders was targeted 3 times. This was Sanders first catch of the year.

Martay Jenkins: 1-17 yards. Jenkins was targeted 3 times. His one catch was a big one to keep a drive going on third down. Jenkins turned the tide of the game with a kick return for a TD. Jenkins was given one carry on an end around for 10 yards.

TE: Freddie Jones: 1-10 yards Jones was targeted 3 times.

Pass Defense: Arizona was unable to provide any pressure from the edge. Trent Dilfer was able to stand tall and comfortable in the pocket while surveying the field. Duane Starks was picked on early and often.

Rush Defense: Shaun Alexander was stuffed time and time again. Seattle tried to stick with the run, but the Arizona defense did a great job of controlling the line of scrimmage and keeping Alexander in check.

Special Teams: Martay Jenkins is the hero of this game. He returned kickoff for a TD after Seattle kicked a FG for a 13-10 lead was the difference in the game.

Seattle Seahawks

QB: Trent Dilfer: 29-47-352 yards (1 TD). Dilfer was an instant upgrade over Hasselbeck for Seattle. Dilfer looked poised and delivered the ball with authority. He was able to keep his eyes down field even when there was pressure from the Arizona pass rush (which was rare). The knee injury that sidelined him didn't seem to bother him at all. He could have easily had another TD that was dropped by Jackson.

RB: Shaun Alexander: 17-37 yards. Alexander was targeted 7 times in the passing game (6-46 yards). With 23 touches Alexander showed he is still the focus of the offense, but the offensive line gave him nowhere to go. This is two weeks in a row for Alexander at less than 3 yards per carry. We wrote off week one to not having Trent Dilfer but you can call us worried now.

WR: Darrell Jackson: 10-174 yards. Jackson was targeted 14 times in the game. Add in the two drops Jackson had and this could have been a 200 yard game. One of the drops was on a drag across the field in front of the linebackers that would have been a walk in TD.

Koren Robinson: 5-82 yards. Robinson was targeted 13 times in the game. Robinson was given a carry on an end around (6 yards). Robinson had half the catches and yards, but he was targeted just as much as Jackson. Robinson is being asked to work the middle of the field more and it doesn't look to be to his liking. One catch he made was nullified by defensive penalty on the other side of the field.

TE: Itula Mili: 4-18 yards (1 TD). Mili was targeted 6 times. Mili is holding onto the starting TE spot by a thread. The 1 yard TD occurred on the next play after they tried to get the ball to Stevens in the endzone.

Jeremy Stevens: 2-16 yards. Stevens was targeted 5 times. Of those 5 targets, 3 were in the endzone but none resulted in scores. In his defense, only one ball was catchable (one overthrow and one play that could have easily been called pass interference).

Pass Defense: Shawn Springs was matched up with David Boston during the entire game. He did a great job of jamming him on the line and looks to have regained pro-bowl form. The pass rush was mostly nonexistent.

Rush Defense: Seattle was blown off the ball all game long as Arizona ran the ball at will. This makes two weeks in a row that Seattle could not stop the run. Charlie Garner and Thomas Jones are not the best RBs in the league, but Seattle made them look that way.

Special Teams: Giving up the kickoff return for a TD was the turning point of the game. Seattle seemed to have the game in hand even though the score did not reflect it.
