Jacksonville 23 at Kansas City 16

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Jacksonville Jaguars:

QB Mark Brunell had a great day. He spread the ball around between Fred Taylor, Jimmy Smith, Patrick Johnson, and Kyle Brady.

RB Fred Taylor was stopped early, but had a solid second half, exploding through the holes when they appeared.

TE Kyle Brady has emerged as a big part of the Jacksonville passing game

Free Safety Marlon McCree was a all over the field with 4 Tackles, 1 Assist, 2 Interceptions and multiple passes defensed.

Kansas City Chiefs:

QB Trent Green had a horrible day. His poorly thrown passes and bad decisions cost the Chiefs the game.

RB Priest Holmes ran very strong until Jacksonville stacked the line to stop him.

TE Tony Gonzalez had another touchdown and is still a big part of the Chief's passing game.

The Kansas City passing defense was very poor. There was always an open receiver.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Jacksonville Jaguars

QB: Mark Brunell completed 25 of 36 for 320 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions. The Kansas City defense stacked the line to stop Fred Taylor and challenged Brunell to beat them. He did. Brunell occasionally forced the ball to Jimmy Smith, but on the whole spread the ball around well. A well played game by the veteran.

RB: Fred Taylor carried the ball 20 times for 114 yards, 1 TD, and 1 fumble. He was ineffective on limited carries in the first half as the defense stacked the line to stop him. With Brunell's success loosening the defense, Taylor had a solid 2nd half that included a 63 yard TD run. He was responsible for the only Jacksonville turnover when he lost the ball after bumping his elbow into the back of one of his blockers. He had a tough first half, but when the holes were there, he took advantage of them. Taylor also led the team in receptions with 6 for 45 yards.

WR: Jimmy Smith made 5 catches for 83 yards including a 37 yard TD on a gutsy fourth and 4 call. He was Brunell's first option and often drew double coverage. Brunell tried to force it to him a few times when he was blanketed.

Patrick Johnson is all about YAC (yards after catch). The goal was to get Johnson the ball on short routes and see if he could bust a big play. He caught 4 passes for 97 yards busting one big TD of 79 yards. They also gave him an end around that was stopped for a loss of 9 yards.

Bobby Shaw was a non-factor catching 2 short passes for 8 yards.

TE: Kyle Brady was the second downfield target after Smith. He caught 5 passes for 60 yards and had several others thrown his way (including two dropped passes, one in the end zone). Brady is a big part of the Jacksonville passing game.

Pete Mitchell had a couple of catches on short routes. They were in the flat, safety valve routes, not down field patterns.

Pass Defense: Marlon McCree was the standout with 2 interceptions, 4 Tackles, 1 Assist, and multiple passes defended. He was everywhere. The pass rush wasn't that heavy, but coverage was solid. Some of the success goes to Trent Green's bad play.

Rushing Defense: Danny Clark led the Jaguars with 8 tackles and 2 assists in the effort to stop Priest Holmes. Holmes had many strong runs in the first half, but in the second half, Jacksonville stacked the line and stopped him.

Kansas City Chiefs

QB: Trent Green completed 16 of 31 passes for 199 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs. Green was awful. He missed open targets and hurried throws when he had time. Jacksonville did provide some pressure, but not nearly enough to force this performance. At half time, Jacksonville made adjustments realizing that Green was having a bad day and stacked the line to stop Holmes. Green was unable to take advantage of the open receivers and made many bad throws and bad decisions. It was a poor performance for Trent Green.

RB: Priest Holmes carried the ball 22 times for 84 yards and had 5 catches for 32 yards, but didn't make it into the end zone. Holmes ran almost at will in the first half. Every play was either a handoff to Holmes or a play action pass. The first half drives stalled when the Chiefs tried running multiple passing plays in a row. Holmes was basically shut down in the second half when the Jaguars stacked the line. Holmes ran strong and Trent Green was the only thing holding him back. Side Note: they ran many reverse and end around plays in the first half giving 7 different players at least one carry.

Tony Richardson is just not getting the looks he used to. He had only 1 carry and 1 catch.

WR: Johnnie Morton was open many times and Green just missed him. He finished with 2 catches for 23 yards.

Eddie Kennison looked good on a couple of plays, but Green rarely looked his way. He finished with 2 catches for 30 yards.

Dante Hall is just plain quick and fast. Besides returning both kickoffs and punts, Green looked his way on several plays. They tried to get him the ball in the flat and let his speed create something. They even lined him up in the backfield on one play and gave it to him on a dive play.

TE: Tony Gonzalez was open many times that went unseen by Green. He did have 3 catches for 34 yards including a 12 yard TD catch where Gonzalez had to jump at full extension and land in bounds in the back corner while being sandwiched between two Jaguars. It was a very nice catch.

Pass Defense: No real standout here. Brunell had little trouble finding open receivers on every play. They didn't have a sack, didn't apply that much pressure and left people open all day. Not a good showing.

Rushing Defense: Mike Maslowski led the Chiefs with 8 tackles. In the first half, they stopped Fred Taylor, getting first contact behind the line on most plays. In the second half, they got worn down and left holes open. Taylor had several good runs in the second half finishing with 114 yards and a TD.
