New England 44 at NY Jets 7

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

New England Patriots:

The Patriots won in all aspects of the game.

In the passing game, QB Tom Brady looked sharp and appears to be very comfortable in this offense.

Patriots used 4 and 5 WRs but focused on Troy Brown.

In the rushing game, Antowain Smith accounted for only 15 of the 40 carries by the team, giving way to the other RBs after the game was out of hand.

On defense, the Patriots dominated, getting 5 sacks and two turnovers that were both converted for touchdowns.

New York Jets:

Through the first half, the Jets had completed only 18 offensive plays in 9:59 of possession.

QB Vinny Testeverde did not complete a pass to a wide receiver until the third quarter, and followed it up with an interception. The next series, Pennington started. The defense struggled and allowed 30 points (the other 14 were on defensive turnovers). The announcers made the comments that Testeverde would surely start next week.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

New England Patriots

QB: Brady looked sharp again today, picking apart the Jets defense for 25 of 35 passing and 2 TDs. His play action pass set up several long passes and runs, and he executed several trick plays with ease. Should have another TD that Troy Brown fumbled at the 1.

RB: Antowain Smith was the leading rusher with 15 carries for 65 yards, but he had less than 40% of the team's rushes. Kevin Faulk, Marc Edwards, and special teamer Patrick Pass shared a combined 21 carries. Smith was shaken up when he was pulled down hard in the second quarter, but stayed in the game and ran well. Other things that contributed to Smith's low output were the rain, the fact that it was a blowout, and Kevin Faulk's effectiveness rushing 10 times for 48 yards.

WR: Troy Brown caught 9 passes for 94 yards that, if not for a fumble on the 1 yard line, would have been 9 catches for 95 yards and a TD.

Deion Branch bobbled a pass and had it taken from him for Brady's only interception, but atoned for it later with a 49 yard TD.

David Patten caught a 39 yard bomb on a fake reverse, and continues to be the team's speed receiver.

TE: Cam Cleeland caught a 1 yard TD on a second and goal play action pass.

Pass Defense: The Patriots blanketed the New York wide receivers, allowing only two passes to wide receivers in the first three quarters of the game. Victor Green had a 90 yard INT return for a touchdown against his former team. Tebucky Jones contributed one of the Patriots' five sacks, forcing a fumble which he returned for a TD.

Rush Defense: Totally dominated the Jets. The box score says the Patriots held New York to 9 carries for 32 yards. The reality is that 11 of those yards were from the punter, and 9 from backup QB Pennington. Martin, Jordan, Anderson and Sowell combined for 7 carries for 12 yards, while the Jets tried to play catch-up. This, in addition to the scoreboard, is a big reason why the Jets abandoned the run early even on a rainy day.

New York Jets

QB: Vinny Testeverde could not move the ball upfield through three quarters of action, giving way to Pennington in the 4th quarter. Pennington opened up his first drive with a nice 9 yard run but ended up 3 of 10 passing for only 39 yards with several New England starters resting. Announcers made the comments that he would surely start next week.

RB: Curtis Martin was involved in 6 of the 18 Jets offensive plays in the first quarter, and had only 15 yards to show for it. He came back in the third quarter and rushed once for 5 yards before leaving the game. His ankle appeared fully healed.

Lamont Jordan had only 1 rush for 3 yards, plus 2 receptions for 17 yards. Richie Anderson had 5 catches for 28 yards, working almost entirely in the flats.

WR: The only Jets WRs to make a catch were Santana Moss and Wayne Chrebet, each having 1 reception for 5 and 33 yards, respectively. Enough said.

TE: Anthony Becht had the first catch of the game for 9 yards over the middle, and had his second consecutive game with a touchdown. He appears to be emerging as a possession target.

Pass Defense: The Jets got two turnovers but were unable to get pressure on Brady and registered 0 sacks.

Rush Defense: The Jets let the Patriots rack up over 160 yards on 40 carries.
