Tennessee 13 at Dallas 21

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Tennessee Titans:

Derrick Mason is far and away the Titans # 1 WR. He is clearly McNair's favorite as he was targeted as much as all the other receivers combined.

QB Steve McNair suffered a mild concussion running into an equipment trunk on the sidelines and left the game for a while. He did returned but did not appear as sharp as before the incident.

TE Frank Wycheck may not be the focus as he once was, but he's still a guy McNair has a ton of faith in. 4 catches including a TD.

Dallas Cowboys:

The sky isn't falling for the Cowboy players. This was a gut check game and they responded. QB Quincy Carter was 14 of 24 for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. He was only sacked once. WR Joey Galloway caught 5 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. WR Antonio Bryant caught 3 passes for 87 yards.

The Cowboy Defense is a unit worthy of starting. They played an inspired second half, scoring a defensive touchdown and limiting the Titans to a 52 yard field goal.

RB Emmitt Smith rushed for 59 yards on 18 carries without much room to run.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Tennessee Titans

QB: Steve McNair looked exceptionally good to start the game. He distributed passes to his receivers and looked comfortable in the pocket. In the second quarter, he scrambled to the Cowboy sidelines and ran full speed, headfirst into an equipment trunk. He left the game for a while with a mild concussion and although was able to return did not look at sharp as before he left.

RB: Eddie George's numbers are not impressive but he again looked more like the back of 2000 than 2001. He ran hard but didn't get many open holes, especially in the second half. He only caught three passes and it appeared his main role in the passing game was to stay in and block for McNair.

WR: Derrick Mason looked extremely sharp. He finished the day with 7 catches for 118 yards. He was obviously McNair's favorite target and he routinely had separation between him and the defender, giving McNair room to hit him.

Kevin Dyson was a non-factor catching just 4 balls for 43 yards.

TE: Frank Wycheck caught 4 passes for only 24 yards but did have a touchdown.

Titans' Pass defense: The Titans got good pressure on Carter the first couple series of the game but faded as the game went on. The Cowboys ran a few misdirection plays at them early and it scared them into a more conservative front.

Titans' Rush defense: The Titans shut down Emmitt Smith and company all day. Excluding a 22 yard run by Smith, Dallas only got 45 rushing yards.

Special Teams: Joe Nedney looked strong kicking a 52 yard field goal. The Titans also had a fake punt in the 4th quarter that extended a drive.

Dallas Cowboys

QB: Quincy Carter was 14 of 24 for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. He was only sacked once but early on he had Titans in his face quite often but maintained his composure. He looked great with his fakes and misdirection plays, one of which opened up a TD pass to a wide-open Tony McGee.

RB: Emmitt Smith didn't have much to work with. His run blocking was merely adequate. He did have a nice opening and flashed a bit of the Emmitt of old with a 22 yard scamper but other than that averaged only 2.2 yards per carry.

Troy Hambrick was a complete non-factor in this one getting only 2 carries for 3 yards.

WR: Good news/Bad News with Joey Galloway. The good news is that he had an extremely productive fantasy day with 5 catches for 88 yards and a really nice touchdown grab. He fought through double coverage and positioned himself nicely in the end zone and made a nice catch. The bad news is that he appeared to give up on certain plays. There was a "go pattern" that he slowed down halfway through that could have resulted in another touchdown. That same drive he made a half-hearted effort to come back for a pass and fight Samari Rolle for a near interception. He played poorly on special teams choosing not to catch a punt on the 15 which the Titans' downed at the 4.

Antonio Bryant looked explosive. He caught only 3 passes but for 87 yards and showed speed and strength. Look for the Cowboys to work more plays to him into the system.

Ken-Yon Rambo got some looks from Carter too. He showed an ability to get open and caught 3 passes for 37 yards but was open on a couple of plays that Carter overthrew him.

TE: Tony Mc Gee caught the touchdown pass but wasn't targeted for the rest of the game.

Pass defense: The Cowboys played an inspired second half doing what they needed to in order to get the job done. The interception return that they returned for a touchdown turned the tide of the game.

Rush defense: The Cowboys game plan was to take Eddie George and the running game out. While he averaged nearly 3.5 yards per carry, he didn't break any long runs. Tennessee abandoned the run in the second half when it wasn't producing large chunks of yardage.

Special Teams: Joey Galloway played poorly on special teams choosing not to catch a punt on the 15 which the Titans' downed at the 4. Another that he should have let roll into the end zone he decided to fair catch at the 10.
