Dallas 13 vs. Philadelphia 44

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Dallas Cowboys:

The Cowboy's offense was less than thrilling today. They looked like the team that was beaten by Houston, not the Cowboys of last week.

Jimmy Johnson on Fox called Quincy Carter an "interesting" QB. I'm not sure that's the word I'd use. At the very least, Carter was extremely inconsistent.

The lone Dallas touchdown came on a 100 yard kick-off return by Reggie Swinton. After going up 10-3 in the first quarter, the Cowboys only made one more visit to Philadelphia's red zone.

RB Emmitt Smith was on his way to a nice day with 11 carries for 52 yards. Unfortunately, the Cowboys fell behind quick and Dallas was forced to the air.

Philadelphia Eagles:

QB Donovan McNabb was simply amazing for the second week in a row. He threw to eight different receivers for 287 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Cowboys put extreme pressure on him by blitzing often in the first quarter rushing his throws and sacking him twice. McNabb countered by breaking runs of 26 and 25 yards. From the second quarter on he had all the time in the world.

Philadelphia had plenty of trick plays up their sleeves. James Thrash ran a double reverse for 32 yards. David Akers ran 10 yards on a fake field goal formation. Brian Westbrook threw a 25 yard touchdown to Todd Pinkston on a half back option.

RB Duce Staley got the bulk of the carries. The Eagles are a pass first team and playing any of their running backs is a risky decision.

WR Antonio Freeman broke out with his first 100 yard performance and touchdown as a Philadelphia Eagle.

The defense was strong once again. They allowed no offensive touchdowns for the second week in a row.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Dallas Cowboys

QB: Quincy Carter was 21 for 35 for 201 yards 1 interception, 2 fumbles and no touchdowns. He was never able to get anything going against the Eagle's defense. Extremely inconsistent. Will make a nice throw and follow it with a terrible effort.

RB: Emmitt Smith had a solid showing with 52 yards on the ground and 31 in the air. His numbers would have been more impressive if the Cowboys did not have to abandon the running game. For what it's worth, he broke Walter Payton's record for career carries.

WR: Joey Galloway received most of the looks ending up with 7 receptions for 70 yards. Does seem to be able to get separation and make the most of his speed.

Antonio Bryant had 4 receptions for 35 yards. He had a 24 yard run up the left side that resulted in a fumble.

TE: Tony McGee had 3 receptions for 27 yards. The tight ends did not seem to be an important part of the game plan.

Dallas Pass Defense - Dallas pass defense started off hot. They attacked McNabb hard in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, they cooled off as a result of McNabb remaining poised and making plays. There were no answers for Thrash, Pinkston, and Freeman.

Dallas Rush Defense - The Cowboy rush defense was strong today. Most of the Philadelphia's yardage came on McNabb taking off and trick plays.

Dallas Special Teams - Billy Cundiff was perfect on 2 field goal attempts. Reggie Swinton returned a kick-off for 100 yards, accounting for the only Dallas touchdown of the day.

Philadelphia Eagles

QB: Donovan McNabb is playing the best football of his career right now. He was pressured early on as Philadelphia's line just let blitzing Cowboy's through. He countered this by breaking off two huge runs for over 20 yards apiece. He threw to eight different receivers for 287 yards and three touchdowns. McNabb was also the Eagle's leading rusher for 67 yards and a touchdown.

RB: Duce Staley took most of the carries. He ended up with 11 carries for 41 yards. Clearly, this is not a run first offense. Playing any of the running backs is risky.

Brian Westbrook had 4 carries for no yards. He surprised everyone with a very accurate side arm pass on a half back option for 25 yards to Todd Pinkston for a touchdown.

Dorsey Levens saw very little playing time today. He is just an insurance policy right now.

WR: James Thrash, Todd Pinkston, and Antonio Freeman combined for seventeen receptions, over 200 yards receiving, and 4 touchdowns. They were all extremely involved in today's game plan and made it next to impossible for Dallas to cover all three.

Each WR had at least 5 catches and a TD. Of the three, Freeman seems to be making quick improvements as he adapts to the system and his new teammates.

TE: Chad Lewis had three receptions and a missed pass that would have resulted in a touchdown. He was knocked out of the game for a bit and was replaced by Mike Bartrum.

Philadelphia Pass Defense - Held Carter to 201 yards, no touchdowns, and 1 interception. They played a near perfect game.

Philadelphia Rush Defense - Hard to get a read on them. With the offense scoring so many points, the Cowboy's had to abandon the run early. They are adequate, but not nearly as good as the pass defense.

Philadelphia Special Teams - Allowed Reggie Swinton to return a kick for 100 yards. This is the second time they were scored on in two games. David Akers was perfect on 3 field goal attempts and 5 extra points. He also ran the ball for 10 yards and a diving first down on a fake field goal formation.
