Cleveland 13 at Pittsburgh 16

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Cleveland Browns:

William Green cannot run up the middle. Of his 4 carries into the middle of the line, he came away with a total of 1 yard. All 16 of Green's yards came on the far outsides of the field. He doesn't see running lanes, dances behind the line, and hits the holes after they have collapsed.

Back up Jamel White was able to run with good success against the middle of the line, with over 80 of his 105 yards going up the middle. There's surely egos and all involved with selecting a player in the draft but one has to wonder how much longer Coach Butch Davis will give Green the carries.

Pittsburgh Steelers:

Former XFL star QB Tommy Maddox replaced Kordell Stewart to lead a tying touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter, then drove the Steelers to Peterson's winning 31-yard field goal and a 16-13 victory that may have saved the Steelers' season. After the game, Coach Bill Cowher indicated that Kordell was most likely to start next week. "I'm leaning toward starting Kordell," Cowher said. "If we need a lift, I will go to Tommy."

Explosive WR Antwaan Randel El was used in all aspects of the game. His Passing attempt fell incomplete. He had 2 rushes for 8 yards, and 5 receptions for 51 yards. He can Pass, Rush, Catch, return Kicks, everything. Was the star of the Pittsburgh overtime win, used repeatedly in the winning drive.

Jerome Bettis was ineffective running the ball. He is rumored to be nursing "Hamstring and Butt" injuries. Christian Fuamatu-Ma'afala came in for him and did very little. Amos Zereoue was used as well, and did very little against the Brown's run defense. Fuamatu-Ma'afala was definitely used as the first option after Bettis.

WHAT YOU OUGHT TO KNOW

Cleveland Browns

QB: Tim Couch - 16 of 29 for 144 yards passing with no TDs. Couch was sacked twice, with 2 INTs. One carry for 2 yards rushing. Browns came out passing with just under 65% of their first half plays being pass attempts. Even though Couch was sacked twice, he was under very little pressure from the Steelers' pass rush for the day. Threw a pass to Quincy Morgan inside the end zone where Morgan couldn't get control of the ball before falling out of bounds. Missed another TD opportunity where Kevin Johnson was in the End zone with 2 steps on the defender. Couch just under threw him. On 3rd and 9 from the 47, the Steelers came with a Blitz, forcing Couch to throw an INT to OLB Joey Porter. Couch's other INT was with 3 seconds left in the 1st half on a Hail Mary pass into the End Zone. Picked up a 1st down on a QB sneak on 3rd and 1.

RB: William Green - Listed as the starter for the game. 7 carries for 16 yards, longest from scrimmage was 7 yards. Of Green's 16 rushing yards, 12 of them came on 3 plays early in the first quarter. Rushes of 7, 5, and 3 yards, all to the far outsides of the field. The other 4 runs were up the middle for a total of a single yard.

Jamel White - 16 for 105 yards rushing with a TD. Another 3 receptions for 14 yards. Returned a KO for 11 yards. The bulk of his yards came on a delayed handoff where he ran up the middle for 54 yards before being pushed out of bounds on the 9 yard line. Walked into the end zone untouched from 4 yards out. Showed extra effort for additional yards on every rush and reception.

HB/FB: Aaron Shea - 2 catches for 22 yards. 17 of his yards came on a deep crossing pattern over the middle.

WR: Dennis Northcutt - 4 receptions for 38 yards. Two punt return attempts for a total of a yard. Picked up a key 1st down with a 7 yard gain on 3rd and 6. Picked up another first down on an 11 yard reception on 3rd and 5.

Quincy Morgan - No receptions on the day. Did catch a ball inside the End Zone for what would have been a TD. Couldn't get control of the ball before falling out of bounds. Did however make the catch.

Andre Davis - 2 catches for 36 yards. Returned a KO for 32 yards. Both receptions where on seam routes where he was able to get great separation from the defender.

Kevin Johnson - 3 receptions for 23 yards. Missed an easy TD opportunity where was in the end zone with 2 steps on the defender. Couch just under threw him.

TE: Mark Campbell - 2 catches for 11 yards. Also returned a KO for 14 yards.

Brown's Pass Defense: SS Robert Griffith and Back up MLB Andrea Davis each had INTs. Very little pass rush pressure from the Browns Defense resulting in no Sacks. Starting CB Daylon McCutcheon was assisted off the field, and checked for a concussion on the sideline. He did not return to the game.

Brown's Rush Defense: Did a great job holding the Steelers' rushing attack. Key hold from 1st and goal from the 4. Two Bettis and one Stewart rushes were stopped for no gains. On Another 1st and goal opportunity, Bettis was stopped for no gain resulting in a FG. DE Tyrone Rodgers was taken off the field injured.

Brown's Special Teams - K: Phil Dawson - 2/3 FGs, with an XP. Also handled KOs. Missed the game winning 45 yard FG in overtime.

P: Chris Gardocki - 5 punts averaging 46 yards. 3 of the 5 pinned the Steelers within their own 20.

KOR: 3 returns for the team. One for 14 yards by Starting TE Mark Campbell. WR Andre Davis for 32 yards, and RB Jamel White for 11 yards.

PR: WR Dennis Northcutt fielded two punts. One was a fair catch for no gain, and the other was for a single yard.

Pittsburgh Steelers

QB: Kordell Stewart - 15 of 25 for 143 yards. No TDs and an INT. Added another 30 rushing yards on 7 carries. Stewart started out well, actually looking like he was responding to the challenge against his starting job this week. After that strong start, the wheels started to come off, with Stewart getting progressively worse on each series. Twice stopped at 1st and goal. In the second of the two separate attempts, Bettis missed the TD by inches. It was actually called a TD at first, and then overturned on a replay. Stewart fumbled the snap on the next play. On 4th and 1 from the 24, Stewart ran a QB sneak for the 1st. With 36 seconds left in the first half, Stewart threw back to back incompletions on 2nd and 3rd down in the Red Zone from the 9 yard line. Resulted in a Peterson FG. His INT came on a pass to Ward in the end zone where he was double covered. Stewart tried to force the ball into him. Benched in favor of Tommy Maddox for ineffectiveness. After the game, Coach Bill Cowher indicated that Kordell was most likely to start next week. "I'm leaning toward starting Kordell," Cowher said. "If we need a lift, I will go to Tommy."

Tommy Maddox - 11 of 13 for 122 yards with a TD and an INT. Had two rushing attempts for a total of a yard. Came in for an ineffective Stewart who was benched. One of his two incompletions was an overthrow to a wide open Burress for what would have been 25+ yards. TD to Burress on the Goal line. INT to MLB Andre Davis in overtime. After the game, Coach Bill Cowher indicated that Kordell was most likely to start next week. "I'm leaning toward starting Kordell," Cowher said. "If we need a lift, I will go to Tommy."

RB: Jerome Bettis - 14 carries for 24 yards. Was pulled from game early in the second half. Rumored to be nursing "Hamstring and Butt" injuries. Twice stopped a 1st and goal. In the second of the two separate attempts, Bettis missed the TD by inches. It was actually called a TD at first, and then overturned on a replay. Stewart fumbled the snap on the next play. On 2nd and 1 from the 24, Bettis was stopped for no gain.

Christian Fuamatu-Ma'afala - 5 carries for 20 yards. Came in for an ineffective Bettis, but did very little with the opportunity. Clearly the # 2 option behind Bettis.

Amos Zereoue - 4 rushes for 10 yards, along with a reception for 3 yards. Seemed like an after thought after Fuamatu-Ma'afala and Bettis were ineffective.

WR: Hines Ward - 9 for 104 yards. 28 of his yards came on 3rd and 10 from the Steelers' 36. Picked up another needed 1st down on 3rd and 3. Had an opportunity in the End Zone where Stewart was picked off trying to force the ball to Ward in double coverage.

Plaxico Burress - 7 receptions for 84 yards and a TD. Burress was wide open for what would have been 25+ yards, but Maddox overthrew him. TD came from Maddox on a quick post route. Browns were playing with no Free safety in on Goal Line Defense. Burress beat his defender (who was supposed to be playing tough bump and run) for an easy TD in the end zone.

Antwaan Randle El - Passing attempt fell Incomplete. 2 rushes for 8 yards, and 5 receptions for 51 yards. Explosive. Will Pass, Rush, Catch, return Kicks, everything. Gained a much needed 1st down on an End Around rush on 3rd and 6.

Terrence Mathis - 3 catches for 25 yards.

TE: Mark Bruener - One reception behind the line of scrimmage in the flat for a loss of -2 yards

Pass Defense: CB Chad Scott and OLB Joey Porter each had INTs. DE Aaron Smith got a sack, and Blitzing SS Lee Flowers had another. On 3rd and 9 from the 47, the Steelers came with a Blitz, forcing Couch to throw an INT to OLB Joey Porter. Scott's INT was with 3 seconds left in the first half on a Couch Hail Mary toss up.

Rush Defense: Completely stopped William Green up the middle. Was not as successful against Jamel White who had the bulk of his carries up the middle.

Special Teams: PK Todd Peterson - 3 of 4 FGs with an XP. Alvin McKinley blocks Peterson's game winning FG on 2nd down. The ball didn't pass the line of scrimmage, and was recovered by the Steelers. This allowed Peterson another attempt, and he hit the game winner.

P: Josh Miller - 4 Punts averaging 42 yards, however only one for the punts pinned the Browns inside their own 20.

KOR: Lee Mayes and Randel El combined for 5 returns. Both averaged over 20 yards on returns giving the Steelers great field position all day.

PR: Antwaan Randel El - 4 attempts for a total of 7 yards gained.
